Happy Friday!

Just finished watching the Thai drama “Cheewit Puer Kah Huajai Puer Tur”/“My Life is to Kill, My Love is for You”. Overall, it was a very enjoyable drama with its anti-hero hit man lead and its sweet, strong heroine. No noble idiocy and no petty breakups. As an added bonus, the second female lead wasn’t OTT crazy or screechy (rare for a Thai drama) but then the second male lead did make up for her lack of craziness. The drama moved at a good pace with no draggy episodes. Given the nature of the plot, the drama does have a lot of killings and most of the supporting characters are bad guys. However, the drama does have a really great OTP that makes watching it worthwhile.

Now just need to catch up on this week's episodes of 100 Days My Prince and Terius Behind Me.

Most of them are oldies 90's and early 00's but they are really good. I found that I like older JDramas better than the newer ones in general.
Pride
Orange Days
Long Vacation
Virgin Road
Q10
Tatta Hitotsu no Koi
Buzzer Beat
Beautiful Life
Over Time (although it has a frustrating ending, so maybe skip the last 15 min.)

I am currently obsessed with Bungaku Shojo (Literary Virgin or Book Girl). Two episodes are subbed and I keep rewatching them (under 30 min epi) while waiting for the next.
The story is about a junior editor who up to this point has experienced her deepest emotions through reading. She gets assigned an jaded established author of mystery suspense who has a reputation as a ladies man. She is eager to collaborate and despite the decline in quality of his novels, believes he can write a moving story. Years ago, his debut novel had a profound affect on her and she considers the protaganist her “first love”.
The main characters are well cast. The lead female is likable with a believable passion for books. She looks plain and then 30 seconds later, beautiful. The lead male, who I only recall from a supporting role in Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, has a casual playfulness to his womanizing that prevents it from being a defect. He is emotionally closed off, but not it the usual tortured, angsty way.
It does have some of the exaggerated manga moments, but think of them as expressions of internal thought rather than realistic portrayals of behavior.
I think it is an on-going light novel series, so the ending with probably be the partly open-ended one common to Japanese dramas. It is definitely in the shoujo category if you need a break from antsy or disrupting dramas.

Happy OT!

I was trying very hard to get out of the current drama slump. Some beanies wrote that Matrimonial Chaos is a good watch so I gave it a try. Bae Doona is great as usual but the show didn't really get to me. It did however made me recall a recent show about marital woes - Familiar Wife. I tried and binge through 4 eps since last night. I'm officially hooked.

As someone who's been married for more than 20 years, I can relate to the issues that Woo Jin and Joo Hyuk encountered. Hearing all kinds of marital problems over the years, ranging from mild to really bad has perhaps made me less critical of the two characters especially Joo Hyuk. In short, marriage needs a lot of work because there's so many things or factors other than love.

I never thought it was only JH fault that their marriage ended up like that. Anyway, it was a pleasant watch till the end but it didn’t affect me the way Go Back Couple did. GBC remains my favourite drama about a divorced couple getting back together.

Required fields are marked *

GBC was definitely a better drama but as @outofthisworld said FW's marital problems were much more relatable to us long-time married viewers. Whereas in GBC the strife reason reveal ended up sounding just as childish spite and ungratefulness from the wife. I love that drama to pieces and have rewatched it many times but everytime that reveal makes my blood boil. The "problems" and the "reactions" were much more relatable and true-to-life in FW, but for the rest it remained a simple pleasant watch. Not much memorable.

@midnight I too found the problems in FW more relatable. Marriages seldom break down due to a single event or reason. Often, it's the small things which adds up and how it eats into a person.

Required fields are marked *

I just started ep 5 of Familiar Wife so I guess it's too early to rate it against Go Back Couple which is a favorite of mine. However, I can kind of imagine why GBC might be more enjoyable or have the ability to tug at one's heartstrings.

Hi Beanies,
My week's highlights :
- "dust dust dust" cuteness overload in Where Dust Robot ships the OTP 🤗
- meanwhile "tang tang tang tang tang tang tang tang" in new journey to the ghost variety show 🤣🤣🤣
- stumbled upon threehundred tvN show YT videos, mind blown by Wheesung and his fans performances 😲 👍, desperately wishing this show could have more ep and see all my bands and solo artists in it !

side note : Lee Je Hoon's English caught me off guard, wow 😍.

My secret Terrius is growing on me. It is nothing memorable but a good, light watch. It has still managed to be engaging.

Matrimonial Chaos/The Best Divorce - No idea about this. I will give it a few episodes. Thos drama instantly reminded me why I dislike divorce based/adultery shows. The way they make one partner a cheater from the beginning to justify it. That isn't the case with the main couple in this show at least. I was also reminded of This Week My Wife will have an affair. The reason why I really liked it was at least their partners weren't already cheating and were loyal to their spouses.
How is Dae Jang Geum is watching?

Hi Everyone! ....... I hope you are all doing well today.

It's been a bounty of dramas! I hope Beanies have found a few new favorites!

The Ghost Detective - Lee Ji-ah continues to impress as the woman-child killer with a lollipop ---- she's scary, dangerous and unpredictable all at once.

My Secret Terrius - This is certainly turning into the fun watch of every week! Everyone is hilarious, including the CEO villain!

Let Me Introduce Her - I knew the female lead's mom was wishy-washy when I first saw her, but the minute it was revealed that years ago she knew her daughter was the victim of domestic violence and she nevertheless advised her daughter to put with it, I was done with her! I don't even know how her daughter can still be on speaking terms with her.

Matrimonial Chaos - Very good show. It's only been two episodes and already you feel the moments of uncertainty and doubt felt by the individuals in this. I think this show will certainly ask a lot of important questions.

Player - It makes sense that Ha-ri and Prosecutor Jang are working together. They both got tired of losing to the bad guys and it looks like both came to the conclusion, although at different times it seems, that the law as it's written doesn't work as it should.

Room No. 9 - If we can get over the fact that unplugged medical equipment is able to hold "supernatural powers", and that a person with no legal training, who has been in prison for 34 years, can somehow find out how to navigate the legal world as a lawyer ...... then I think we'll be in for quite a ride!

That's all for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

Disclaimer: I work in a tiny European country and not in the US.

The reason for the above is that law here changes on a frequent
frequent basis and what you studied in school is often no longer relevant.

Which is why for almost every case we must start researching from scratch to make sure we dont miss anything.

Hence the Google skills.

What’s your opinion on plastic surgery, Beanies? Do you condemn those who undergo PS or you don’t care?

I remember commenting on another website that I was surprised Park Min Young wasn’t listed between 20 most beautiful k-actress because I always found her pretty. I was immediately attacked that PMY is all fake and that South Koreans will never accept her between their goddesses 😀

For a country where PS is so common, they surely have double standards.

I have nothing against plastic surgery. I just feel sorry for those who get addicted to it or have a botch job.

Recently while watching Im Soo Hyang in My ID Is Gangnam Beauty, I wondered if she had some plastic surgery done. I hazard a guess that she did a nose job and a terrible one at that. I saw some of her earlier photos and couldn't fathom what she needed to correct. Whatever her reasons were, I just felt sad for her that it wasn't a case for the better.

5

Required fields are marked *

I don't have anything against plastic surgery either if it makes the person truly happy. Where I have an issue with is if it is forced to please someone else. I still remember this scene in Grey Anatomy where a woman comes in for a boob job with her boyfriend and every time the doctor asks a question (about the size, shape, whatnot), her boyfriend would answer for her and she would just kind of nod.

in the end, the doctor realized she was doing it not for her but her boyfriend and decided not to go through with it.

I wanted to this my topic today in the main comment. Objectively i have no problems with Plastic surgery. But, i won't go through any of these procedures. I consider Makeup from light to heavy also mild version of PS as main purpose is to achieve something more acceptable.

Mixed feelings. It's there choice, but I have the feeling that the bigger issue is not looks, but low self esteem. Gangnam Beauty pointed that out pretty clearly. Year or so ago ran across a survey done in South Korea where 100 or so university students were shown before and after photos of a bunch of non-celebrities. 75% said they looked better BEFORE the surgery.

Hello everybody. Please excuse me if there is a proper place to introduce myself around here and I can't find it. I came to this site desperate to find out more about "Black".
Netflix recommended Black to me seemingly at random, having not previously really been aware of K-Drama, and certainly not how much of it is on Netflix. I like thrillers and police shows, either American, British (where I'm from) or alot of the subtitled Scandi-Noir shows like The Bridge, but I also have watched Korean movies by directors like Park Chan-Wook, and used to really watch a lot of Hong Kong action cinema. Black sounded like something I would like, and also a little different, with the blurb mentioning these grim reapers and a sample of reviews mentioning how the story drags you in. My oh my does it drag you in. I sat down to watch the first episode and was baffled, amazed, annoyed, and lots of other emotions too, and emerged 90 minutes later wondering what the hell I'd just watched. I liked it though. The first twist intrigued me, and I fell in love with Ha-ram. I read more about K-drama - I read how the shows are formed as a single piece and that they take their time to get going and often don't set things up at the start of the show (like western TV does). By episode 4 I realised that even though I was watching the show closely I felt like I might be missing little details. You guys will already know that you have to really pay attention as sometimes little nuggets of story pass you by as they aren't really telegraphed to the audience, at least not in the way they would be in a western TV show. So I went searching (I thought pointlessly, as most Google searches thought I was looking for Black Mirror or some other western show) for a synopis/recap to just help me make sense and digest this crazy show that I'm watching. And what did I find? Drama Beans fantastic episode recaps, beautifully written and with well-chosen screen caps to remind me of that part of the episode. Thank you so much for this site existing!!
So now I'm thoroughly addicted. I've seen behind the K-drama curtain and found a not-so hidden community of addicts that I didn't know existed. I would be interested if you guys have any recommendations for shows I need to catch up on and would like. I have put Man to Man, Bad Guys and Iris on my watchlist, but not only thrillers and have put Something in the Rain on there also as I wanted to sample the sweet side of K-Dramas too. Thank you for listening to me ramble on. I hope to get to know more about you all and this new (to me) K-drama world!

Welcome to our little and dynamic fandom!! It's always interesting to learn how people are introduced to KDramas which lead them to this website, where we watch dramas happily ever after 😁. I enjoyed Black as well; it unexpectingly grew on me, although I was disappointed by the ending. If you liked this writer, you could give a try to her/his previous drama: 14 days, god's gift. (Sadly not available on netflix I believe). Man to man was funny but many people were left disappointed by Something in the Rain, so proceed with caution. On netflix, I would advise you the following: Wise Prison Life (=Prison playbook), Stranger (=Forest of Secrets), and maybe Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (if your are open to wacky comedy). Have fun!

I sat down to watch the first episode and was baffled, amazed, annoyed, and lots of other emotions too, and emerged 90 minutes later wondering what the hell I'd just watched. I liked it though.

And this, dear friend, is how all of us fell into the black hole that is the kdrama world. I came here wanting to know more about a certain drama too--2 years ago, and the rest is on the open thread and Dramabeans. Be sure to check out the Beanie fan walls to really see some entertainment. And you can introduce yourself on your own fan wall as well! *Rolls out welcome mat!*

As for dramas, Netflix is getting more and more content and new dramas too. I would echo "Stranger" (aka Forest of Secrets) for thriller, mystery, "Live" for a police drama that is really a character study, "Prison Playbook" for the opposite side of the law, but also a character study, "Life" a medical drama and largely character-driven written by the same writer as Stranger (do you see a kdrama pattern here?). I like character-driven shows. I'm also watching Hyori's Bed and Breakfast (reality) on Netflix too! And if you want to go find content elsewhere, VIKI and Dramafever are the legal go-to sites where you can find lots of free and paid content, to your heart's desire. Also, k-movies and other Asian entertainment are found there. I always forget Amazon Prime content, but I go there too for k-movies. For "Something in the Rain" I would watch the first 8 or so episodes, and then read the recaps for the rest and watch the last episode. Just some sage advice. I was in-love with this one, but it went off the rails, which happens frequently, but makes it that much more entertaining as well. Have a great time here!

Kdramas through amazon prime are actually from DramaFever, but it does have its own kmovie content. I saw my first kmovie, “ The Beauty Inside,” on Amazon and loved it. “The Man From Nowhere” with Won Bin, was second, “My Sassy Girl,” “Coin Locker Girl,” “ Monster” with Lee Min Ki, and “The Royal Tailor” are all there, along with “The Handmaiden.” Some of these are gritty and very adult, but worth your time if you are looking for lovely Koreans with amazing acting. Welcome to kdramaland!
As others said, you're so lucky to start only now: there's nothing like the feels of excitation of discovering a complete new world of never seen stories!

To follow your ask for recommendations on netflix:

The must watch/masterpieces (on the same level as western countries shows): they are the best kdrama ever made
-Misaeng
-Stranger
- Not on Netflix (yet but it's been announced to come in 2019) and a absolute must see: Signal

Excellent drama very well done and intense watch: they're not without flaws in term of character development or pace but still very addictive
-Life (same team as Stranger)
- Live
- Mr Sunshine
- Argon
- Listen to Love (other title this week my wife will have an affair)

i would suggest to replace Something in the Rain which got mixed reviews with Age of Youth: it's a slice of life about 4 girls who share a house. The main characters are very endearing and their friendship is a pure treat.

If you have time left, there's too few japanese drama that are excellent:
- Erased
- Million Yen Women

I recommend you to browse the site: there's ton of quick reviews to give you an idea about what to watch (lot of them are not on legal plateforms but still easy to find...)

Welcome to DB, @charlie! I discovery of DB echoes yours. After getting intrigued by a show (Live Up To Your Name, Dr. Heo!, which I still enthusiastically recommend), I went looking for reviews and fell into this Wonderland.

Three recommendations:

1. Add "Splish Splash Love" to your list. If you like a little bit of sweet, I regard it as essential viewing. It's just over 2 hours in total. I happen to love time-slip stories so this is right up my alley. The leads are charming and it's funny with just the right touch of bittersweet.

(2) Track your dramas onmydramalist.

(3) You'll also find that DB recaps are a wonderful way to skip-binge old dramas. I will sometimes watch just the first couple episodes to get a sense of the characters and then read the remaining recaps—with occasional dips into the juicy bits.

A film so well done, but one that due to the subject matter I had to stop halfway through and cannot bring myself to finish. That it spurred actual change to the laws in South Korea is a testament the commitment of everyone involved in the film, and especially Gong Yoo for pushing it to be made.

2

I am well aware of “Silenced” and the subject matter, which is why I haven’t seen it and likely never will. I’ll proud of Gong Yoo for tackling such a heavy issue and sparking real polical change though.

2

@egads @ally-le
I know that the topic is atrocious, but I really commend the director and the whole team for treating the matter with fineness and sensitivity. It might be my favorite Goong Yoo role, because I've never seen him as vulnerable as in this movie, and I know it is a project he really took to heart.

DB gave me explained to me the stuff I missed and gave me deeper insights on the drama.

While watching, a little voice is always nagging at me that I'm missing something then I read the DB recaps and I know I missed something. LOL! If you like history, Netflix has Mr. Sunshine. It drags a bit in the middle but I was interested in the setting that the writer presents the story in. We were taught very little about this part of the world so the story seems fresh and the production is beautiful. Check it out.
If you want something light, Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is fluffy and sweet. It's set in historical Joseon so that means traditional costumes but it's fusiony enough to keep the watching fun. Again, the shots, the costumes, the cast... are all beautiful too.
For a modern sweet show, check out Weightlifting Fairy: Kim Bok Joo. It has so much heart. My teens and I love it. That should tell you something.
For something cringy, Come and Hug Me did it. It's not gory and didn't have ghosts or anything. It just made the hairs on my arms stand up.
W-2 Worlds has an interesting story line too. Our lady in the real world gets to cross over into the comic world to get tangled up with a swoony lead character that her dad created. It's cool.
I've only ventured out into one Taiwanese drama titled "In a good way". it's super sweet. Very nostalgic and sweet and will take you back to your school years. I take take that back. Also watched Love Cuisine. It was entertaining but I'm not craving to rewatch it.

Greetings, @charlie K-Charlie!

Welcome to DramaBeans. You've come to the right place. I'm not sure what happened, but I got kind of carried away when I started writing some notes for you. What the heck. Proceed at your own risk. ;-)

I got hooked on Kdramas on HULU in 2013 or so, and watched only costume dramas (sageuks) for the first couple of years. Eventually I got around to contemporary shows. By all means, check out the DB recaps. Reading them has made a huge difference for me as I do not speak Korean, and I feel that I miss a lot even with good subtitles. The cultural, historical, and linguistic background provided by the DB recappers and live-watching viewers in the comment threads are just what the doctor ordered. Plus it's wonderful to have buddies with whom to hash over plots, character arcs, etc.

Be sure to check out the weekend feature “What We're Watching” for more recommendations. Here's my rundown of the currently-airing shows (*preceded with asterisk) I'm watching and can recommend, along with selected older productions.

BLACK was a great show until the last two episodes, IMHO. For Song Seung-heon in the title role, it was his best outing to date. SSH was the male lead in my first Kdrama, the Joseon time-travel medical sageuk DR. JIN. Read the recaps to fully appreciate how epic his performance in BLACK was.

*THE PLAYER – Song Seung-heon is again on a roll in this heist caper reminiscent of LEVERAGE. I am so glad to see him in his element. In true Kdrama fashion, there's more to this show than car chases and fistfights with gangsters. The team's individual back stories have yet to be revealed.

CHIEF KIM – Namgoong Min plays a gangland accountant and money manager renowned for his inspired bookkeeping that thwarts prosecutors' investigations every time. He gets recruited to ferret out corporate financial malfeasance, in the process crossing paths with a former prosecutor (Lee Jun-ho) he refers to as “Gluttonous Psychopath” who has sold out and gone over to the dark side. Their adversarial relationship leads the latter to a change of heart, hilarious bromance, and successful prosecution of a chaebol crook.

JUST BETWEEN LOVERS – Lee Jun-ho was so good in CHIEF KIM that I had to check out this gorgeously bleak but uplifting character study of two people whose lives were drastically altered by a case of faulty construction based on the same real-life 1995 shopping center collapse as the one in BLACK. Excellent and moving.

Part 2 of 4

LOOKOUT – One man's campaign to use the law to avenge his father's false imprisonment by a corrupt prosecutor. A memorable team of collaborators. Plot went ballistic in the last couple of episodes, but it was a great ride up til then. Kim Young-kwang is dynamite as the antihero. Shin Dong-wook is dandy in his long-awaited comeback as the lead's priest stepbrother.

*DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING – The ever-charming Shin Dong-wook continues his comeback in what appears to be a contemporary family drama mashed up with LET'S EAT and sageuk JEWEL IN THE PALACE. He and his younger twin siblings are descendants of the great Joseon chef and physician. Rom-com is finally in the air minus the strictures of his Roman collar in LOOKOUT. He was terrific in the romantic comedy SOULMATE (2006). Alas, I'm put off by the clueless shot put champ who is the leading lady in this show, as well as the bratty kid sister. (I'm probably sensitized to bratty kid sisters owing to the obnoxious one in *THE THIRD CHARM and another in recent weekend family drama MARRY ME NOW?, who was less heinous.) Good news: the food pron is terrific. This drama may just be the remedy for the gnawing hunger I've had since LET'S EAT 3 was truncated by Yoon Doo-joon's sudden enlistment.

SIGNAL – Simply epic. Terrific music.

MAWANG / THE LUCIFER / THE DEVIL (2007) – Top-notch revenge drama available free of charge with excellent subtitles on the KBS World TV channel on YouTube. Highly recommended for its excellent cast, gripping performances, and engaging study of the consequences of bullying. Terrific cinematography, symbolism, and great music.

MAD DOG – Insurance fraud investigation has never been so addictive. But that's just scratching the surface. Underdogs vs. airline chaebols. Woo Do-hwan makes a splash as a German adoptee who returns to Korea to clear his brother's name of pilot error.

LIFE ON MARS – I haven't seen the original. The Korean adaptation is addictively engaging, with a dandy cast of memorable characters. Epic, suspenseful, soulful, and mind-blowing in the best possible way.

TWO WEEKS – Terrific contemporary suspense drama starring Lee Joon-gi. He's in his element in this one. See also his dandy spy thriller TIME BETWEEN DOG AND WOLF. His recent LAWLESS ATTORNEY was another good, gritty ride. The fantasy sageuk ARANG AND THE MAGISTRATE is one of my all-time faves with LJG in the title role. He does all his own stunts and sword fighting. The film that launched his career into the stratosphere in 2005, THE KING AND THE CLOWN, is totally epic. The monarch in the movie is Yeonsangun, who was movingly depicted in very different ways in two excellent sageuks in 2017: REBEL: THIEF WHO STOLE THE PEOPLE, and SEVEN DAY QUEEN.

Part 3 of 4

LIVE (not to be confused with LIFE) – An engaging and moving slice-of-life treatment of the day-to-day lives of people who become police officers. Great performances, memorable characters. Fantastic cast. NOT a police procedural, but more a social study of Hell Joseon and its inmates. Terrific music.

QUEEN IN-HYUN'S MAN – A time-traveling Joseon scholar ends up on the set of a sageuk being filmed in Seoul. Ji Hyun-woo is the bee's knees in the title role.

ROMANTIC DOCTOR, TEACHER KIMSubstitute "idealistic" for "romantic" and it might make more sense. Not your usual hospital drama. Terrific ensemble cast and memorable characters who linger long after the curtain falls. Young physicians practice medicine in an emergency room in the boondocks under the leadership of an enigmatic virtuoso surgeon. Even the minor characters in this show – and the actors who portray them – are excellent. Top-notch attention to medical practices and details. Great music.

BEAUTIFUL MINDCharacter study of a neurosurgeon whose own surgical brain injury prevents him from feeling emotion. Like RDTK, not your usual hospital drama. Jang Hyuk's eye acting in the title role is simply terrific. He is equally great in action shows and does his own stunts and sword fighting, neither of which he does in this role. CHUNO / THE SLAVE HUNTERS is epic. He plays underdogs like nobody's business. He's currently starring in the oddly-named *BAD PAPA.

*BAD PAPA – Tale of a blacklisted boxer who turns to MMA fighting to make a comeback after losing his job as a detective. But not until after he is turned down as a participant in a clinical drug trial.

VOICE – A police officer with bat-like hearing is brought in to establish a quick-response team to find missing persons, and in the process stumbles across numerous serial killers, including one whose modus operandi matches that of her own father's murderer. Jang Hyuk stars as the bereaved violent crimes detective tasked with responding to the Golden Time Team's alerts. Kim Jae-wook takes an epic walk on the dark side in this cat-and-mouse game. (He is presently appearing as an exorcist in *THE GUEST.) Not for the faint of heart.

*THE GUEST – Currently-airing cable thriller about a psychic, a priest, and a cop whose families and young lives had been totally disrupted by demonic possession. The malign spirit is still at it 20 years later. Show is gripping, but has not scared me out of my skin or given me nightmares. Top notch. It's a treat to see Kim Dong-wook of COFFEE PRINCE back on TV along with Kim Jae-wook (VOICE) and Jung Eun-chae as the detective. What a team.

Part 4 of 4

COME HERE AND HUG ME – If you're into psychopathic serial killers, this may be the show for you. Actually, it is much more a character study of people whose lives have been turned upside down by sociopathic predators, and how they adapt and manage to carry on in the face of tragedy and resulting social stigma. The OST is an integral part of this show. Redemption and the resilience of the human spirit are a couple of the uplifting themes that are explored. Reminiscent of JUST BETWEEN LOVERS in its starkness.

*100 DAYS MY PRINCE is a sweet little sageuk with hidden identities, political intrigue, and an amnesiac crown prince out of water who is hoist by his own edict. Great fun, and very touching. Gorgeous cinematography. Do Kyung-soo plays Seja with endearing deadpan gravitas and great timing. Nam Ji-hyun deftly portrays his resourceful long-lost childhood sweetheart.

*THE BEAUTY INSIDE – I loved the film to bits, and was initially skeptical as to how it could be implemented as a drama. It's only a few episodes in so far, and I'm still getting a feel for it, but it looks promising. Leading lady Seo Hyun-jin is one of my favorite actresses, having made her acquaintance in my gateway sageuk, the heart-warming daily drama THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK HYANG when it was airing on HULU in 2013-14. Lee Min-ki plays the male lead, who has prosopagnosia (face blindness), which has become a trendy Kdrama malady of late.

*TERIUS BEHIND ME / MY SECRET TERRIUSKINDERGARTEN COP meets THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. I wasn't planning to watch it, but it has turned out to be a nice spoof of the spy genre, along the lines of MAN TO MAN, but I think overall better, although the latter definitely has its moments – and Dark Death's inimitable derring-do and bromance.

*THE THIRD CHARMAn arrested-adolescence coming-of-age drama rolled up in a murder mystery, as far as I can tell. I didn't plan to watch this one, either, but took the plunge because of the leading man's epic dual performance as a robot and its human namesake who at various times impersonate each other, so it's really 4 roles in one. (Much like Yang Se-jong's utterly stunning turn as a pair of clones, their donor, and one clone impersonating the other in DUEL. He was fabulous, and also did a great job in the recent rom-com, THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN / STILL SEVENTEEN.)

*ROOM NO. 9SIGNAL with a defibrillator instead of a walky-talky. Two powerhouse female leads as a murderess on death row for 34 years and the arrogant attorney who sabotages her parole hearing. A first-aid mishap results in a body swap. You can guess how the attorney reacts. All set against the background of a powerful law firm and chaebol family politics.

You're most welcome, @charlie K-Charlie. The variety of Kdrama is truly amazing. I dug through the DB ratings to see what appealed to me. I also peruse AsianWiki.com and DramaWiki. Or watch dramas by actors I like. Do take a look at the DB casting news reports. You'll see that the writer and director are often far more important factors than the cast when it comes to satisfying dramas. It's really awful to watch your faves gallantly doing their best in a badly-written or poorly-directed fiasco. Beanie comments are often illuminating and helpful.

Enjoy your Kdrama viewing. ;-)

k-Charlie, you must be a bit overwhelmed with all the recommendations...lols. Probably it would help if you write it down on the note app. Maybe you can go through the list by checking the trailer (usually they have it on youtube), or read the comments (I usually go to mydramalist or soompi), and pick which one that catch your attention the most. Sometimes I go to soompi and see which drama thread has the most pages. Something must be good going on. Good luck :)

Just to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you for being so lovely and welcoming me into this huge crazy world.
Sadly, I live in the UK and DramaFever's premium content is closed off to me at the moment - which I hope will change. I still have a ton of K-Dramas on Netflix to watch.

I finished Black - what a ride. I enjoyed it (and the recaps) right up until the very end. I didn't really feel the last 2 episodes were lacking, and the writer certainly kept tying things into earlier events in the show, which was satisfying. It is difficult for mystery thrillers to NOT be anticlimactic, and I think Black succeeded by and large. I loved the twist with Leo - and talking of Leo, the very ending had me crying (even with the iffy makeup), thinking of how he kept his promise to Black, about how Ha-ram still led her life helping people, and how she finally got to remember him.

I started Strong Girl Bong Soon and Something in the Rain last night. I thought I would try two shows at different ends of the spectrum. Strong Girl had me laughing out loud and Park Bo Young is amazing. I love Park Hyung Shik as her boss too. And then Something in the Rain made me very emotional. I thought Sun Ye Jin and Jung Hae In were brilliant together. Oohh god I'm so drained after the weekend.

I’m glad you found a couple more to quench your thirst. Don’t gulp too quickly though, I’d echo the advice above to develop that discerning palate. However, if you’re interested in kdrama-watching advanced mode practices: 1) get a good vpn and you can open content in other countries, and 2) pair this with a good ad blocker or two and you can enjoy dramas on shadier sites (if you can’t find them on the legal ones—looks like THE GUEST may be an example). And one last recommendation from me: COFFEE PRINCE! You’ll have to watch it on DramaFever but it is free in the US. I inhaled this in 4 evenings watching from 10-2 am. In my opinion, it’s the best Kdrama that addresses the angst of same sex attraction by a man who considers himself straight. And then finding out the man he loves is actually a woman. It’s something that surprised me but Gong Yoo (there’s that name again) is quite amazing in this and you’ll be certain to become his fan afterwards. Happy watching!

So glad to catch OT early this week because I wanted to recommend a Chinese Drama that's flying under the radar. It's called "Suddenly, This Summer". It's about a couple's journey through high school, university and 10 yrs after. The male lead was in "Guardian", which I heard was a huge hit in China. Watch for the friendships and realistic story line and great chemistry among the cast. Plus, it's only 30, yes, 30, eps, with no dubbing nor evil second leads. Highly recommended!

OT week 87! It was a much better week this week! And fall is here with its crisp days here in the middle of America! Which is my favorite time of year. We actually play more golf in the fall because it’s so much nicer and cooler. Is there something you all do more when the weather is cooler? We are going to visit my sister-in-law again this weekend because the kids and husband have the rest of today off. We were just there last week as well, but this time we’re doing an overnight trip, football game excursion. And I will resume my role as the doting aunt to her cuter-than-cute three children!

Otherwise, this week I continued my less harried, less stressful, k-content watching with “Dancing High” where Hoya and Gikwang’s teams were at the top of the leader boards after finding themselves at the bottom last week. They worked hard to get there, with Hoya’s team getting 99/100 points, amazing! They danced to the Greatest Showman, and it was like watching the movie, just incredible. And Gikwang just exudes strength and sexiness in his dancing, nothing more to say there.

I also caught a few minutes of BTLIOF with the Rabb.it watchers and @mindy. I’d forgotten how good this show was. LMK’s subtle expressions at the beginning of this were on-point. He’s really very talented, I have to say. I’m not watching his current drama, just following the recaps, but this week, where @greenfields and @snarkyjellyfish taught me a few things in the recap! This is what makes DB the most unique recap site in the world.

And, for some reason, I watched Hyori’s Homestay (Bed and Breakfast), season 2, ep 5, on Netflix. Mainly to see Park Bo Gum, but I ended up enjoying the slow pace of it and the calmness that filters through the screen when I watch it. Snow is so pretty. Yoon-a is also so pretty in her natural state. So is Park Bo Gum for that matter.

And I keep forgetting to mention that I watched the second episode of Baumdog Revenge Club (Avengers Social Club) 2 weeks ago with my kdrama club. More details here: https://freethekimchi.wordpress.com/2018/10/06/avengers-social-club-episode-2/. We are still enjoying this tale of three scorned women.

And this week at the homestead:

Husband: Bogummy came around today.

Me: *Be cool, be cool! Only I call him that, and the rest of the family rolls their eyes, but you’re calling the stray cat Bogummy!* [Background: my husband started feeding a stray black cat this past summer, and I named him Bogummy, but everyone else calls him Shadow.]

Husband: He thinks he can have food whenever he wants. He loves to eat.

Me: *The real person PBG loves to eat too, as evidenced by his interview on Hyori’s Homestay! But if I tell you all these things about this random person that no one cares about you all will just think I’m obsessed and that I need therapy.*

Husband: So if you see him come up to the porch, make sure you tell me since I probably already fed him earlier.

Me:...

Well, things have been going in brighter way for me since my last comment in Open Thread. I changed my lifestyle in a more active way, like participating in a Ted event. I got some time to explore on photography with my camera. Dramas became a part of my daily life again after wandering on the internet for a year. I've watched The Third Charm, unfortunately, i was only able to watch ep 1&2 because it became too predictable. Sweet but not attractive enough. On the brighter side, i rewatched the whole season of Youth Over Flowers, Iceland edition which is the all time favorite for me. So, that's all, happy weekend everybody.
