Drama viewership ratings for the week of Nov. 5-11, 2018

Well, I’d say that the beginning of November is showing some promise. Romance dramas Fox Bride Star and Beauty Inside are still doing pretty well for themselves, their numbers rounding out near the top. The newest tvN drama Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter premiered with 5.6 percent, though the second episode went down to 5.0 percent. We’ll see what viewers really think of this drama’s fairy tale come to life in the coming weeks, I’m sure.

The fantasy office drama Happy to Die premiered Wednesday, and it looks like this particular time slot can’t catch a break. Though the first episode brought in more viewers than its predecessor’s finale, the next few episodes then lost some viewers. Weekend drama Player ended its 14 episode run, having decent numbers all the way through. The Third Charm will soon follow suit and will air its finale next week.

I've always been curious with ratings. What does the number mean? If a drama has 5% ratings, is that 5% of Korean households are watching the show?

And I remember the days when getting 1% rating on a cable drama was very good. Now cable shows pull similar but slightly lower numbers.

IIRC, 5% ratings just means 5% of households registered with the rating agency watched the show (I’m guessing that the registering is through the TV box that provides the access to content). Ratings these days have taken a huge dip in accuracy though due to the influx of online streaming and whatnot.

As for your second question, it used to be that 1% defined success for cable shows ... back then when cable was still in its developmental stages. Nowadays, I believe that number would be somewhere around at least 5% to qualify as a ratings success. I wouldn’t compare the mainstream and cable ratings though since they’re most likely measured through different methods.

I think it is more that for cable stations one has to pay. Thus lower watching population.

what about shows on free-to-air channels like KBS, MBC and SBS? As long as a household has a tv they would be registered with that rating agency?

No it's not like that. The rating agencies chooses households at random. But they try to make the proportion equal between single househols, families, etc. They have atmost 10000 or so in their sample size. These ratings are meant for advertisers to draw conclusions from. However even advertisers know that these ratings are indicative of very little because a large part of the population is shifting online or recording it and watching at their own time. So they use online buzz to determine which show is worth and which show is not.bits complex

i wonder what the online buzz is for 100MSFTS is

I'm not an expert, but it's basically an estimate of how much the show is watched (based on a representative sample of tv households with a special box to note what and when was watched).

As a former statistician, I would like to stress that it is still an estimate and actually should be given with a confidence interval to give a better information (but nobody does it with Tv ratings 🙂 ). For example if we see rating 5.9%, it means that the actual rating (= based on ALL tv households in Korea, if we were able to measure it) is with 0.95 probability somewhere between 5.6% and 6.2% (I'm making up the numbers for illustration). That also means if you have a show with rating 5.9% and another one with 5.7%, one shouldn't claim that one is winning over the other as the confidence intervals might overlap. It's more like those two shows are in the same range.

BTW, the fact that it is only an estimate can be seen on the different numbers published by TNmS Media Korea and by AGB Nielsen Korea.

...and the drama with the highest rating during the working days is the daily makjang It's My Life (Get Out of the Way, Fate)... range 14.7-17.8%... what's nearly twice as much as the most popular standard drama... why? Easy watch by dinner?

the demographic is different. daily makjang is targeted towards above 40 and air during dinner around 7-8. Standard drama air at 10 and is targeted towards office workers and students.

Interesting. That's not considered part of "prime time" in Korea? And do most networks broadcast similar shows at that time?

I love all Monday-Tuesday shows in main broadcasters. And the Mon-Tues ones in the cable channels are in my to-watch-if-I-had-48-hours-a-day list. I wish they had higher ratings in general. T___T

It seems like military scandals for men really break ratings. Chicago Typewriter had pretty dismal ratings for such a great drama, and there was talk that it was because of the rumors during filming that Yoo Ah-in wasn't going to serve. The same thing seems to be happening to SIG and 100MSFTS. I'm just grateful to tvN for giving talented actors like YAI and SIG the opportunity to still work on projects despite their "bad" reputation. I understand that it's problematic for actors to avoid service because of health issues but still continue to film, but if a drama is good, it should deserve more recognition.

yeah i really love SIG and JSM in 100MSFTS too! not just their acting but also the way the drama is shot and written. so disappointing that the show is not getting better ratings.

is Terius really that good? i didnt get past the first episode. it was a bit too slapstick for me.

Honestly, I didn't get past the 5th episode of Terrius, but only because I felt like the plot wasn't really going anywhere. If you read the comments on the recaps, beanies seem to be enjoying the lighthearted feel of the drama, but the plot drags sometimes. I assume the ratings are good because Terrius is a really good casual watch.

I just started watching Channel A's TWELVE NIGHTS which airs one episode a week on Friday's at 11pm. The ratings for the first 5 episodes that have aired range from a high of 0.608% (episode 2) to 0.212% (episode 4).
I enjoyed the first 2 episodes and plan to stay with it. It is available subbed in Viki.

Its a ratings graveyard. No one seems to be watching prime time shows anymore and public tv is basically dead at this point. Their dramas have been the worst of the lot this year.
