[2018 Year in Review] Part 1: The Bean Count

It’s Bean Count time! For those new to our yearend series, the Bean Count is just a fun way to take stock of K-dramas we finished this year and show them some appreciation (or not) using our personal logic. It’s a visual representation of “I know this show isn’t perfect, but I liked it and wanna give it something anyway!”

To get your total beans, count one for each 2018 show you watched in its entirety. If the show is currently airing, you also get one bean if you’re up-to-date on it. Then bestow those beans to whichever show/s you like. This year’s list includes dramas we missed at the tail end of 2017, starting from Jugglers up to Memories of the Alhambra.

It’s always fun to see how ruthless decisive some folks can be when it comes to redistributing their beans. Do you spread them around so everyone gets some love? Do you snatch the other shows’ beans and give ’em all to that one show that touched you? Do you save your beans for an unknown show, hoping the others will give beans to that popular show you also loved?

You can see the results of our collective bean-ing in the charts below. Sort the shows by number of beans, or click/tap on the staff’s name to see how they split their beans. If for some reason you can’t view the charts, there’s a copy of the table here and the pie here.

Tell us in the comments how many beans you’ve collected this year and how you plan to give them away. And stay tuned for the rest of the yearend series. Happy bean-ing!

Looking at the list of dramas I've only manage to watched barely a handful of them till the end.

Tru dat!
I haven't watched a lot of kdrama this year. I tried some Cdrama For a change and I was surprised. I tried AN ORIENTAL ODYSSEY and EVER NIGHT and I liked them both.
I've tried as hard as I can but I can't figure out why I dropped so many Kdramas this year

1

true.. which c dramas did you like this year? I might catch some if I have missed them..

1

@enenen I've tried
1. Untouchable Lovers (54 eps)
2. Consort Meng Comes Across 36 eps (which was a silly satire, but sooo good)
3. Bloody Romance 36
4. Legend of Yunxi 48
5. Story of Yanxi Palace 70
Oh yeah! @rhealee, after getting used to Kdrama 16eps standard, 36-up can be hard to adapt too, but they're well worth it!

1

@ryanglass oh cool! thanks! I actually haven't seen these! Going to check them out! I just finished watching "our glorious time" yesterday (it's a modern one though and 50 eps!) It's based on a book and I like all of this authors novels, 3 of her other novels have been made to drama too :D
Thanks for the addition to my watch list :)

2

@ryanglass also I think I have compensated with the lack of good korean shows to watch with reading translated chinese novels, oh my god I have read so many :D

1

I started watching cdrama this year as well. Although most cdrama has 50++ episodes which is a big no no for me, i found some cdrama that has around 20++ episodes

Nooooo! Please don't leave Ryu Deok-hwan & Co. out in the cold. I'm watching GOD'S QUIZ: REBOOT, too. You're not alone.

I've started rewatching season 1 and plan to plow through the rest of them as season 5 references 4, and possibly others as well. Even about half-way through season 1 there are shifts in interpersonal relations. I want to see how everyone evolves going forward, even if some of the characters are not in the 5th season. In this sense, the franchise is similar to long-running US forensics procedurals such as NCIS or CSI.

You know, @Mary... if you added "I am not a robot" which finished airing January 25th 2018, you should have also added "Prison playbook", which finished airing January 18th 2018.
Just a little remark, because I think it is fair we can vote for it, and it is indeed one of the best dramas in 2018...
I hope it will appear in the next reviews of the year! 🙋

The Guest!!!! I adored it,the cast, the story everything!!!
Now lets continue
So i loved :The Guest,I'm Not A Robot,Woohoo Waikiki,Longing Heart,Hwayugi,Children of a Lesser God(still mad sad there isin't subs for it),What's Wrong with Secretary Kim,Thirty But Seventeen,Come Here and Hug Me,My Ajusshi,Are You Human Too,Thirty But Seventeen,Lovely Horribly. Not gonna include the ones thata re now airing because well they are still runing...

1.The Guest
2.I'n Not a Robot
3. My Ajusshi
4.Woohoo Waikiki
5.Children of a Lesser God

and Mentioning Hwayugi because i'm shallow and i adore fantasy and Lee Seung Gi...

Yes, this is the famous Bean Count started two years ago and perfected by the resident IT @mary. Thanks for your hard work, mary.

I think if this count were to be done by mostly Korean viewers, we'd see a very different distribution. My Ajusshi, INAR, and Stars from the Sky wouldn't receive nearly this much love, and Mr. Sunshine would have been very near or at the very top. Do you agree?

My Ahjusshi - 🍏
Live - 🍏
Hand: The Guest - 🍏
A Poem A Day - ( finished thanks to beanies)
White Christmas - (finished thanks to binge watching)

I’m ecstatic for the number of beans for INAR and My Ajusshi, but super disappointed about Mother’s low count. :(

Let’s see... I finished 7 2018 dramas (an improvement from last year!)—INAR, JBL, Mother, Waikiki, My Ajusshi, APAD, and AYHT—and I give:

Mother: 3
INAR: 2
My Ajusshi: 2

Simply because I think Mother deserves more love than it got!

The first half of this year was extremely strong, but there have sadly been no dramas I have loved since My Ajusshi. There was such a good run from Fall 2017-Spring 2018. What happened?

I only have 10 beans! Last year it was 11. And I thought it was really bad last year...

Still have a lot of catching up to do. And since I'm particularly stingy this year and couldn't finish most of the dramas, here's my measly bean counts:

What's Wrong With Secretary Kim - 2
For pure amusement despite the roundabout plots. And Park Min Young's pretty outfits. And her glorious shiny hair.

I'm Not a Robot - 3
This drama is full of flaws, but so, so delicious. The first drama where I really liked Yoo Seung Ho in, and Chae So Bin is beyond adorable here. Plus, it was so much fun to group-hate Tilda!

Memories of the AlHambra - 4
Too early to say, but I'm giving my last 4 beans solely to Hyun Bin's dimples. Because I'm cheesy like that.

17

7

Okay then. The last bean would also go to Binnie’s dimples. So Memories of the AlHambra, you got 5 beans now!

4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Out of the 5 kdramas I have watched and am watching this year, Memories of the Alhambra, Hundred Million Stars from the Sky and Secretary Kim were really enjoyable.

MoA: 3 beans
100MS: 1 bean
SK: 1 bean

Side note, My Ajusshi has piqued my curiosity, but not sure I will enjoy it. I don't mind a dark show, but no romance, comedy and potentially boring may not be my thing.

Give My Ahjussi a try. There are some moments of levity. It is not a continuous dirge of melancholy, but is so well written, directed, and acted that I wish you wouldn't dismiss it without even giving it a try.

I tried to cover the sharp points of my pitchfork and just nudge you with it. I hope it didn't hurt.

I guess I might give it a try. Is it an addictive show that you would binge watch? Or you watch 1 ep and sit back and reflect?

Goblin first

then in no particular order

Strong Girl Do Bong Soon
I Can Hear Your Voice
Queen In Hyun's Man
Nine Times Nine Travel
My Ajusshi

Required fields are marked *

I wouldn’t say it’s an addictive show. I’m glad that I watched it while it was airing, as it gave me time to digest the episodes. But I’m also not a binge-watcher in general, so I’m probably not the best person to ask...

But I do believe My Ajusshi is a show best enjoyed at a slower pace where you can take your time to enjoy it.

11
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I second what Mindy says. My Ahjussi requires some processing. I too am glad I live-watched it because it gave me a chance to breathe each week, as well as discuss with other Beanies. And I am a binger of the worst kind (seriously, it's a problem). Take your time with it, and enjoy the expertise everyone brought to make this drama. Seriously, it is beautiful, both in the story and visually.

12

My Ahjussi needs to be sipped like a fine, aged wine.

7

Agree what everyone said about taking the time to enjoy it. My Ajusshi is that masterpiece wherein every frame, every facial expression, every detail in a scene (even the set itself) carries so much meaning that if you'd taken the time to analyze it (which I think most of us beanies did), you'd appreciate it even more 😊 Hope you do not close your doors on it. I swear it will be satisfying!

5

I'm gonna disagree with most comments in this thread and advise you not to watch My Ajusshi based on your favorites/plan-to-watch list. Not all shows (no matter how great they are) are for everyone.

I'd rather you watch it when you're in the mood for it, than start it now due to pressure and end up not liking it. It's unfair to you and the show. :)

8

Required fields are marked *

That's solid advice right here!
I couldn't stand that show because of how IU got knocked around the first few eps. I know its not, but it looked too real, it plain was disturbing.

5

thanks for your comment Mary, I always appreciate your comments!

and yeah I'll stick to what I know I want to watch and will probably watch, and then get around to My Ahjussi.

4

After looking at the plan to watch list My Ajusshi is the one I'd pick if we were playing the game "One Of These Things Is Not Like The Other".

2

@JustMe said she is a serial fast forwarder and did not fast forwarded a single minute in My Ajusshi, well, let me tell you: I fast forwarded some parts (I won't tell which, due to No spoilers), but I regretted. After the show finished, I was so smitten, so up lifted and so excited, I had to re watch it over again and not fast forwarded a single minute, on the contrary, I went with @sadie to the fan site and after all this months I am still thinking of this show.
So there you go.

Its were great. Jbl was painful but full of hope and warm as well, not to mention it good scripts that full of life lesson. life on mars was great thanks to the mysteries, talented actors and it humor. One of the best crime drama ive seen. And it is a fantasy drama, im not a fan of fantasy, but this drama just got my attention.

Thank you 😊

Glad you lik elive as well. I cant say enough praise for "live". It is extraordinary drama when it heroes are a bunch of good police that most of the time unseen in society and not getting appreciation enough because of some bad cops. The cases were great, the directing is precise at showing how police works and really not even one scene is unprecious, every scene have it purpose, the romance just enough, and the friendship ... a lot of unfamiliar actors but all of them did great, and every character counts. Oh how i wish it more than 18 episodes, hope for season 2 as well, or maybe just another great drama from writer noo hee kyung (a fan of her). It easily on top of my list. A kind of drama that i'll remember for a very long time.

Whoa! I knew I hadn't watched many dramas this year. No wonder. Looking at the list pickin's were slim. So including the 2 I'm up to date on right now I only watched 10 all the way through. I knew I had dropped more than I had watched. Well, then I'll give my 10 to Mr. Sunshine because by far it was the most ambitious, beautifully filmed, acted and staged. Granted I did not see some of the "beancounters" favorites I actually dropped A Hundred Million Stars by episode 4. I never watched My Ajusshi because the May/December thing leaves me cold. Anyway, that's how terrible my Kdrama year was, I hope I enjoy this year better.

“I never watched My Ajusshi because the May/December thing leaves me cold.“

You’re aware that it’s not a romance, right?

Yes, I gathered as much after it got underway. I'm not a fan of Lee Sun kyun either so I just skipped it. Some Korean things are not good in television format in my opinion. I may go back sometimes months or a year later and watch a drama that I either missed or didn't bother with while it was running. I may do that with a few of these.

I think I should get two beans for completing Rich Man, Poor Woman. That show makes me gassy in more ways than one.

😭 Once in a while, I appreciate a drama that makes me examine my own existence, or how I am wasting it. Rich Man, Poor Woman was that drama for me this year, @egads.

I feel guilty for making you stick to this drama. 😂 We deserve the medal though, plus two big fat beans (one for the rich man, another for the poor woman).
