First look at Suzy, Lee Seung-gi’s blockbuster action thriller Vagabond

Anyone else wishing they owned those yellow-tinted sunglasses? It’s been six months since reports first announced that Lee Seung-gi (Hwayugi) and Suzy (While You Were Sleeping) would be reuniting in the upcoming blockbuster Vagabond, and now we finally have our first (very) brief look at what we can expect of the action thriller.

Vagabond revolves around a man somehow connected to a passenger airplane crash, who seeks to uncover government corruption that he discovered through a buried secret. I’m assuming that man is Lee Seung-gi’s character, a stuntman, and will be aided by Suzy’s black ops agent, who joined the government to follow in her dad’s footsteps after he died during a mission as an elite Marine.

I’m having a little bit of trouble taking Suzy in her role seriously, even if she may look the part in the released stills. But I’m trying not to let that faze me, especially since the director and writers have some experience with strong, likeable female leads: PD Yoo In-sik’s most recent works include Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim and the two Mrs. Cop seasons, while writers Jang Young-chul and Jung Kyung-soon (who are a married couple), penned Empress Ki. The rest of the cast looks promising too, with Shin Sung-rok (An Empress’s Dignity), Jung Man-sik (Bad Papa), Baek Yoon-sik (Myungdang), Moon Sung-geun (Boyfriend), and Lee Kyung-young (Room No. 9).

I’m also a sucker for action thrillers (done well, of course), so I’m hoping the reportedly massive budget of 25 billion won will be put to good use. And the producers have some time to iron out any issues, since Vagabond is being planned as a completely pre-produced drama. While the show doesn’t have a Korean broadcaster just yet, it has already secured a international distributor in Sony Pictures.

Vagabond is planning to air sometime next year.

So Suzy, at a 110 pound when wet, is playing a special ops agent.

No. I will still say no through my laughter.

I wonder if it's not just physical weight that Suzy lacks, but emotional weight. Because, put Ha Ji Won (who is also small) in that same role and I'm like, "Yeah, I buy it."

Lol, to be honest I definitely get why a lot of people would snort at the concept of a tiny special agent, but as best friend to a petite and proud black-belt who hasn't grown a cm since we were 14, I feel obligated to object that size doesn't always signify strength!

That said, if she pulls off the role well, and the writing is good, I can see her looks adding more dimension to the character's personality/history, as well as creating the potential for a lot of fun scenarios. I feel like any special agent would find having an often-overlooked-and-underestimated exterior both super convenient and terribly frustrating.

But actually suzy not really petite right? If im not wrong, she is about 170 something, she is quite tall as an asian woman.

It depends on the part of Asia tbh, but I’m pretty sure her height (167cm according to asian wiki) is just a bit above average in Korea.

That said tho, tbh I meant ‘tiny special agent’ as in compared to the other hulking, muscle-bound secret agents.

oh no.. she is fairly tall.. check old variety's no heels and she is almost jung hwa's height.. so i'd guess she si 5'6 atleast (tall by asian stnds)

"having an often-overlooked-and-underestimated exterior both super convenient ".

What?. She is extremately pretty, actually, the only way I can see this working is if they use her appeal like on "Mad dog", where Ryu Hwa Young played an athletic, sexy, badass member of the team.
She was 100% believable.
(God, how I miss Ha Ri/Min Joon chemistry, ....)

Oh nah, I didn’t mean to imply Suzy’s plain at all lol. (Honestly I don’t think any actress in kdrama I’ve ever seen could qualify as plain.) I meant that sentence in a security sense.

Like, if you’ve got bad guys scanning their surroundings for agents, they’re likely to overlook a woman, especially one who doesn’t seem to have much muslce on her. And even if said woman challenges them mid-operation, they’re gonna underestimate her based on her frame and not think she can actually cause any harm. Hence, an often overlooked and underestimated exterior of a special agent.

It's not so much in the size as to the ability of an actor or actress to execute choreographed martial arts or fighting moves smoothly and believably. If you remember Han Ye Ri's butt-kicking, sword-wielding role in Six flying Dragons, you'll know what I mean. She had the elegance and poise, and that was what made her scenes beautiful to watch. Suzy, on the other hand, may be cute; but as she displayed in the Gu Family Book, she lacked that crucial element of gracefulness in her fighting scenes. It may have been due to poor directing; but I still think she had an awkward gait to her movements. Just my thoughts, sorry

I agree about your Gu Family Book assesment, but that was on 2013, maybe she trained for months...
Nevertheless, I believe Gina Carano on this tipe of roles, she has a "I'll grapple you and climb a wall behind you to break your neck on a 360º flip" kind of attitude and that is hard to see on Suzy.

Although I agree with you about the 5 year difference may help her improve; the thing about what makes one person more watchable than others is the "charisma" and how they carry themselves. Like dancing, one could train to memorize steps but in the end it's still about the fluidity, charisma and "presence". Like when you watch a good dancer dancing and you couldn't take your eyes off her. Not everyone has this.

Duuuude... I'm the worst dancer ever even with lessons.
That is painfully accurate. ;-D

For me, it's not her stature, but that she still looks very young. Her baby face makes me question whether she would be old enough to have earned the position to be a black ops agent.

Yes on her looking young. She already looks like she is playing dress up just from those stills.

If it was a dude who looking like he can't even drop whiskers let alone a beard and who looks like the wind could knock him off his feet at any given moment playing this role, I would say the same thing.

If Lee Min Ho can get cast in City Hunter then Suzy can do this.

Suzy's a second degree black belt and her father is a taekwondo instructor. Despite her delicate looks, she's always been known as tough (not girly) due to her upbringing. If you search "Suzy strong maknae" on YouTube, you'll find compilations of her past appearances on Invincible Youth and Running Man where she shows how athletic she is. She even broke some boards with her fist on a show with IU once, and won many wrestling matches with other female idols. Not to mention, she's been training very hard for months for this role. Lee Seung Gi praised her and said that she's like Lara Croft. Even if Suzy lacks in the acting department, one can't deny her hard work and dedication.

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen a 5 foot 2 character on a K-drama flip and subdue a bad guy. You should be used to the concept by now.

Her body weight/structure is not the problem. Her dead eyes are.

I’m so excited, it’s about time we got the first look! Suzy improves in WYWS and I liked her spunky character so hoping that this one is also tough and witty to an extent ( she is an agent after all) also the chemistry between LSG and her is definitely there so I’m looking forward to this one. Also curious as to what they did that requires such a huge budget lol

I will watch so long as it doesn't turn out like city hunter and IRIS, where the girl is rendered useless despite all her training and is saved by the man. SIGH, one of my biggest pet peeves.

Beanie Synopsis: Kang-Chi is still looking for the Gu Family Book in modern-day Korea, where he is simply known as "Vagabond". The book has been kept as a government secret for centuries, but now political factions are racing to find it and rule the world (hence the corruption). While working as a stuntman with Truck of Doom and Cliff of Non-Doom he crosses paths with a mysterious black ops agent under a peach tree.

So our Kang Chi is finally reuniting with the reincarnation of Yeo Wool!!!
Also omg I actually have a pair of yellow tinted sunglasses which was an impulse buy a couple years ago haha
also I actually love pre-produced dramas. (been burned one time too many by dramas that have changed direction mid-drama due to one reason or another)

This already sounds great! 2019 is adding more and more dramas that I can't wait to watch!

She played 4 times a lead roles in a drama since 2011 and she is still not so good. She's lucky, twice it was in a preproducted dramas. She lacks of nicety in her acting.

This sounds very much like a similar show from a while back. Cannot recall the name, but it was about an airplane crash coverup that sounds very similar. All I can recall for sure is that it was full of plotholes.

Suzy is to acting what Kendall Jenner is to modelling - terrible at facial expressions but getting jobs based on popularity, and bearable as long as the production/writer goes out of their way to accommodate her skill levels (in Kendall's case by putting a bag over her head, blurring her face or not showing it, in Suzy's case by writing a character that isn't too complex for her skill level and doesn't need much emoting).

They certainly hyping this one a lot, let's see how it does.
