Romance Is a Bonus Book teases with ASMR clip

A new teaser clip has been released for upcoming tvN rom-com, Romance Is a Bonus Book. Noona-killer Lee Jong-seok (While You Were Sleeping) stars as “a Korean idol of the cultural arts,” a prodigy and genius writer who becomes the youngest ever editor-in-chief of his publishing company.

Lee Jong-seok’s character has been on the star track ever since his student days. Although he’s cold and precise when it comes to work, he’s warm when it comes to his personal relationships, with extremely good looks to boot! Opposite Lee Jong-seok, Lee Na-young (Runaway Plan B) plays a washed-up ajhumma, who was once also a rising star in the copywriting community.

Having won prestigious writing contests during her university days, Lee Na-young’s true resume shows her to be overqualified for many entry-level positions, and she’s unable to find a job. At the end of her rope, she decides to pretend she’s a high school dropout to get at least a temp job at Lee Jong-seok’s company.

To be honest, the plot was kinda meh for me, but I absolutely love books and the new ASMR-style teaser has got me hyped for this drama. It shows each step of the handmade book-binding process, which is somehow extremely mesmerizing. On a fresh page, text reads “There was a special incident that day. And a very special person was met,” and subsequently Lee Jong-seok narrates, “That was the way our new chapter began.”

Directed by Life on Mars and Good Wife’s Lee Jung-hyo, tvN Saturday-Sunday drama Romance Is a Bonus Book will begin airing on January 26.

Welcome back, Genius Lee Jong Suk! I did enjoy you as hapless Jung Jae Chan in While You Were Sleeping but I gotta admit, no one does maybe-he's-born-with-it geeeeenius like you do good sir.

Can we actually call him a genius tho? Kdramas love that term but just coz this guy is really good at his work doesnt make him a genius. It is streching the definition. Now if he had a superpower like knowing which book will be a bestseller, then he could have been one

Does anyone know if any of the top 3 places (Viki, Kocowa or Netflix) has picked up licensing for this show?

Now I am dreaming of Go Kyung-pyo dressing Yoo Ah-in with nothing but books (I am greedy that way.)
It is not far fetched!! I am sure I have seen a tailored made suit using books in one of those Project Runway challenges.

So, re: writing, something silly I did New Year’s Eve (I couldn’t party because I was working, but I also ended up with a boring assignment), was write out a holiday short story about my imaginary Errand Boy Coco. I think I’m turning into one of the webtoon writers in dramas who have alter egos in their stories.

I need a book making hermit asap, we will wed and return to his mountain where we will create books togethers, from writing to binding. #ideallife

Ooooh that's cute. And don't worry I do the same thing,
I have several stories that started out as real life me alter egos and then mutated into their own stories hahaha. And Sicarius is actually the title of one my three main writing projects. That's why it's my online moniker heh. My profile picture is a chibi the main character hehe.

Is that gonna be who Errand Boy Coco ends up with... hahaha

Well, if you read any of my Errand Boy gif stories from last year, you would have met EB Coco, whose story I’ve been continuing without the kdrama cliches as a murder mystery set in Chicago (write about the places you know hehe), and she had a work place love interest (called Suited Minion) that in my NYE story showed up at her doorstep to make her ddeokbokki. #fantasy #fanfictionofmyownfiction

Oh, wait, who were you suggesting she end up with? Mountain bookmaker or Sic? 😂

3

Also tell me more about your writing projects. I have two main ones I keep writing more of, (I guess 3 with Coco now) and then the different short stories I get into. :P

2

I did read those!!!! They were crazy! hahaha
Oooh errand boy murder mystery ... I'm already intrigued.
He turned up on NYE to make her food?! Goals.
I was suggesting she end up with the Mountain Bookmaker hahaha (not Sic, she has no love interests lol), but her Suited Minion also sounds pretty cool.

My writing projects. Oh bleeping heck. Alright then, one moment...

4

I have... a lot of writing projects. As my 95 plus pinterest boards will attest to. I've been writing stories in my head since I was about 7, and some turn into actual projects and some are just distraction and processing mechanisms.

I think I have about 6 main projects, and then at least 10 lesser projects which don't get as much attention, and ENDLESS ideas. I even have drafts for several kdramas lol.

Of the main 6 though-
1 is a book of illustrated poems all centered round one mythos.
1 is actually a screenplay for a TV show I would like to make one day, that might end up being a graphic novel before a tv show since the likelihood of me learning to draw GN people is higher than me magically getting sponsored to make a TV show...
And the other 4 are novels/series ideas.
2 are at the moment trilogies. 1 is like... a whole range of novels planned for the one world and history and 1, the one that has the most written of it, that is actually technically at 1/2-2/3rds of the first draft of a manuscript may end up being a duology or else just a standalone depending on how long it is.

The Sicarius story is one of the trilogies, although it started as a poem, then a short story, and has a full movie script written for it too, although it's pretty terrible and a lot has changed since I had to write that...

4

Hehe Sic, maybe I’ll write another fanfic of Coco’s story where a Mountain Bookbinder woos her and we get a good old fashioned love triangle (except I nearly didn’t have any love interest for Coco and still am on the fence about one but I was feeling wishy washy on NYE and caved by writing a romantic food scene)

2

Wow seriously impressed that you have been able to keep up with all of those stories ~ most of my stuff is hand written, it’s easier for me to write with pen and paper somehow, but transcribing makes me understand why successful writers get assistants for that chore 😅

Reading over old stuff can be... interesting lol. Like, in your head these stories appear so wonderfully full and vivid, but fall flat in the actual writing (I haven’t read any of your writing, just my own frustrations).

It’s always so much fun making up new plots and characters! One thing I’m debating is adding Coco to a larger storyverse I’ve been working on, like, keep her stand alone stories but add her character as a resource to the detective team I’m trying to develop.

(My main goal is to have a mystery novel published, because I enjoy my fantasy but I know some of it is quite cheesy and I keep changing parts of the mythos)

2

@hotcocoagirl
I haven't been busy doing anything interesting and it took me two days to reply to this... -__-

Sometimes you just have to write cute things. Also I'm not usually the biggest fan of love triangles but I trust you to be able to do it well! Maybe have the Mountain Bookmaker as a brief respite whilst Coco figures out her true feelings kekeke

I don't know if "kept up" is the right word; nothing is finished and most of it is in my head but thanks?
Although I too use mixed media. Most is typed, but there is one character where I can write in his voice better if I write by hand.

Reading old stuff IS intersting! It's a mixture of OH GOSH THE MISTAKES and "wait did I really write this?". The script for Sicarius was for scriptwriting course I did, and I wrote it in like a week, so it's mostly terrible, and reading through it again is cringe worthy but then there'll be the odd idea that's like, oh okay yeah that was good. pfft.

Oooh interesting! What's that bigger story verse about?

4

I’m going to say that I decided to wait to reply to make you feel better 😅

Chingu we are really such kindred spirits, I was nodding at everything you said about stories in your head and mixed media, and reading old stuff. A lot is crap, a bunch is “I can see what I was trying to do there” and some is, wow, I was depressed AND creative at that time. 😜

I have three big stories with many rabbit trails and secondary plots I daydream about, but this bigger storyverse is related to my dream of creating a great detective for a series of detective novels. A lot of it is still percolating in my head with scraps of paper covered in notes and scenes. Coco would join as the introverted reporter character hehe ~

Honestly, I have a hard time watching him be a romantic lead in dramas ever since Three Meals a Day, when he was hanging all over Yoon Kyun-sang and saying his name over, and over, and over...

I normally don't consider an actor's personal life when watching them on screen, but I feel like he's a little brother now. And watching your little brother romance some lady friend is just...I can't. I can't!!! Lol!!!

I feel the same way whenever I see Yoon Kyun-sang in any role where he's supposed to be tough. I've seen you kiss your cats, dude.

Three Meals a Day...watch at your own risk (it's so fun, though).

lmao ikr both of them are years older than me so I don't see them as little brothers or anything, but watching that show does make it harder to take them seriously now lol. I've read a handful of magazine interviews from LJS as well so it's even harder to separate the characters from his image (he's kinda eccentric) but well, that's the challenge of being an actor, he must prove himself.

I'm mostly kidding...have you seen the new three episode one with LJS? SO FREAKING GOOD. He's always nice to watch, though I find him a bit overrated as an actor. His being eccentric is kind of my favorite thing about him, to be honest. :D And YKS...I have to admit that I think he's one of my favorite actors right now. Of course, my list isn't exactly short (hah!), but he's near the top for me. His earlier work isn't as good, but his performances in Rebel and Six Flying Dragons are exceptional. In Rebel, Kim Ji-seok was the one that really stole the show, but YKS held his own against that powerhouse performance, playing a much more demanding lead part, so that's pretty impressive for a guy with his resume. I've watched a bit of the new rom-com he's in, and it's cute and funny. The nice thing is that even though he's requisitely playing cute and funny in it, his performance in it is also surprisingly nuanced. I REALLY hope to see him cast in better roles in the future.

I have faith that LJS only chooses scripts with at least something substantial and/or unorthodox to say, even if some of them may fall apart at some point in the story (and it's not his fault by any means, in fact I give it to him for sticking to his gun every time, a drama that is all fluffs is the last thing I want to see my favs in). With this one, given that the topic at hand being about books, I'm automatically in! But I must say that as an aspiring writer, I'm not very fond of the idea of a genius writer who has everything working in his favor through sheer born-talents-and-good-looks (I love you Jongsuk but for your own good refrain from taking genius roles from now on please).
