Kang Haneul, Hyeri up for deserted-island adventure romance Picnic

I had thought this “adventure romantic comedy” drama was dead, but it’s back on the books at MBC, albeit with a new title: Initially called Gaia, the drama now bears the title Picnic and is still courting Kang Haneul (Misaeng) for the lead role, with Hyeri (Entertainer) as his potential co-star.

I’m surprised Kang Haneul is still in contention for the main lead, not that he isn’t worthy of it — it’s that although he’d been offered the role initially when Gaia was first announced, the drama then lost its initial writer, Song Ji-nah of Healer, Legend, and Sandglass, and Kang Haneul also stepped away to work on his other projects. But now Kang is up for the lead again, having wrapped up pre-produced fantasy sageuk drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Goryeo, so maybe it worked to the drama’s advantage that it took all this time to get back into motion.

Picnic is described as a fantasy adventure rom-com that drops (literally) a cast of idols onto an uninhabited island when their flight crash-lands there. They find themselves in a place far from civilization, and thus begins the human adventure rom-com that features “a seemingly impossible love fantasy.” On top of the romance, Picnic will also be a coming-of-age story for its youthful leads, featuring growth and maturation among its cast. Can we also have lots of ridiculous island hijinks, a la Rain in Come Back, Ajusshi?

Why it’s called Picnic, though, I have no idea — the ordeal sounds like it ain’t no picnic, that’s for sure. (Badum-ching.) Kang Haneul’s would-be character is a successful idol with a prickly personality, while Hyeri’s role would be of an ordinary girl who happens to be on the flight. I do prefer Hyeri to the first potential casting that was floated (SNSD’s Yuri), although I admit that I thought twice after Entertainer, which seemed like a big step back after she’d broken through with Answer Me 1988. But at least we know Hyeri has it in her.

The drama, initially hoping for the Monday-Tuesday post-Monster slot in September, is now looking at a 2017 broadcast and will be a Korean-Chinese co-production. It will be directed by Choi Byung-gil of Angry Mom.

I don't think Suzy has improved at all! Hyeri did show some acting potential...but still has a long way to go.
I hope they cast someone talented in acting opposite Kang ha neul

suzy DID improve, but she is no where near being a good actress yet. at this point, i think suzy is a liiiiiiiiiittle bit (huge emphasis there, seriously) of a better actress than hyeri tho.

idk if hyeri showed potential or if DS was just made for her? maybe she just vibed well w/ r1988's director & cast? idk but there was magic there. only thing was, she became pretty underwhelming near the 2nd half of the drama--girl faded into the background. at this point, i'm convinced she's pretty one-dimensional. girl has to prove herself.

Honestly, Suzy has yet to produce anything even close to the level of Hyeri's performance in AM1988, if UF is anything to go by. (and I think it's fair to compare those since both dramas involved roles being specially written/tailored to the idols' range, or what the writers thought that range was).

Hyeri was the weakest of a very good cast in 1988, but even that basically led to a decent, fairly adequate job. I can't say the same for Suzy. Hyeri is far from a good actress but honestly, I've seen far worse.

I think rather than pointing out who's the weakest link, reply was a director's work, from start to finish. It stood out among the lot because the director showed his story through out these characters aka actors.Because of which actors who're comparatively green in the industry was able to show significant amount of development and dedication too.I saw a bts where hyeri was practicing for a crying scene, she was in the mood, and even tried to improvise the act by taking helps from the seniors,it showed how much she was trying. So what I'm trying to say is,when the director is this much dedicated to his job,he tries to motivate the people involved in the job too.Compared to which,I saw scenes in entertainers where either the dialogues in itself were quite poorly written, and the scenes were awkward and pedestrian.I don't gather how those scenes even made it to the final cut. So,not always probably the actors are to blame. On the contrary, suzy is not doing bad in UF,minus the scream of course. But again,I was watching 'a love to kill last night', done by the same writer. And the acting of Rain and shin minah were two times better than both suzy and kwb. They both were quite young at that time,so it's inspiring to see this level of maturity from them.Don't know if being pretty makes it hard for actors to shine out,or whether it automatically makes them vulnerable in the eyes of audience..talking about woo bin yeah. From time to time the actors feel like they're just being themselves not no eul- joon young. But again I don't solely blame them for their scope of work here. But definitely a good mix of actors make all the difference..and I wonder if the newest generation of actors lack there..For better production of the writer, one needs to watch thank you which is quite poignant because the story and execution both made it up to the level, also watch out for jang hyuk and gong hyo jin too.And lol ,sorry for the rant over.

0

@sky - it's interesting you mention A Love To Kill - Rain and Shin Mina were only 23 and 21 respectively, but they had the chemistry and the acting down, despite their relative greenness. And in that case, it was despite the script rather than because of it.

UF, on the other hand, is running on similar tropes but ends up feeling very perfunctory, like there is no depth to any of it. And I don't think the leads are off the hook for this one.

When I say Hyeri was the weakest out of the Answer Me cast, it just speaks to how high the standard was that even with that, she gave a more than adequate performance. And she deserves credit for that - like they say, you can't get blood from a stone and maybe the PD is a miracle worker but even he couldn't have got a decent performance out of nothing.

I see the word "improved" being trotted out a lot when it comes to Suzy's acting, but in five years she hasn't even come close to 'good'.

As I said, if you watched Answer Me 1988, Hyeri actually put in a better performance than anything Suzy has done so far despite her relative lack of ability being constantly accommodated by writers and PDs. Hyeri's still very dependent on the script and PD, and unlike certain other idols, is not a natural actress. But credit must be given where credit is due, and it takes a certain amount of dedication to even 'play yourself' convincingly.

--
Could not have said it better. Hyeri did work harder in reply, and it's sad that people are willing to dismiss her performance when she's only 4 dramas in her basket, and I believe there 'are' rooms for development, given a quality role and director.
Also may be sometimes we judge people a little too strongly, because there are times when certain actors give the vibe like some specific roles were made for them, while other roles fall out.I am still skeptical about suzy, because I've only seen her in UF,but maybe there would be roles where she would prove herself, like uee did with marriage contract. Also age and maturity is another thing to consider. In UF,from time to time, when suzy is working out her aegyo effect,it seems like she does not remember she had some some major pain and hardship to deal with in her previous life events, the disconnection with her character is palpable. So to phrase up,I would rather wait to see her growth, but in the meantime, yes,a better actor/actress could bring life to the story, and we have seen that have happened in past.

0

Suzy is definitely better than Hyeri and so much prettier- I get distracted by Hyeri's teeth

0

'better than Hyeri' how? She acts with her teeth, doesn't seem to know how to close her mouth.

0

tbh I still think Hyeri has potential with the right director + writer like in AM 1988, she can do what fitted maybe...
but Suzy (who surprisingly didn't do much good things with pre produce UF ) make me think if hyeri can do this. ..

I think Reply '88 was an easier role to pull off than UF. In Reply '88, the ensemble cast carried the show, and Hyeri was definitely decent (under the tutelage of a genius director who's known to do wonders) but still slightly green IMHO when compared with all the acting stalwarts in the show.

But Suzy's role in UF, in my mind, is a lot more challenging. The lead character of No Eul is much more emotionally layered and complex than Deok Sun, making Suzy who's anyway an ordinary actor at best, seem even more subpar, if you will.

Having said that, I do feel Suzy's acting is showing improvement, and in a role with a lighter vein, she may be close to if not entirely on par with Hyeri.

0

Im not a fan of either one of them. But i do thk Hyeri is dependent on the pd, the script and the person opposite her in Reply she had good rapport with park bo gum and ryu. She didnt manage that with Ji sung in entertainer.
I still havnt watched UF and i cant really comment. Suffice to say im ok with Woo bin but from the teasers Suzy doesnt pull me in. They look like they are acting when together and not so natural. Just my 2 cents

0

Hyeri did a better job in AM/Reply 1988 than what Suzy has done in anything yet (even "Architecture 101").

Unlike Lee Yeon-hee and Kim Tae-hee who seem like they really have progressed in acting, neither Hyeri (based on "Entertainer") or Suzy (anything she's done since 101) - have really progressed.

At the same time, w/ a superior script and a talented PD (who know how to get the best out of his/her actors) - these 2 can do pretty good work (as seen in AM/Reply 1988 and 101).

Same goes for YEH, who still hasn't been able to live up to, much less surpass, her performance in "Coffee Prince."

Sigh. Count me in with the people who can't relate to her acting. Couldn't hold my interest in 1988 and completely lost me in Entertainer. No discernible chemistry in either show. Granted, people seemed to love her in 1988. But, near as I can tell, she was simply the beneficiary of the show itself being a crack drama.

I just wish she'd hone her acting chops by getting a little real-life experience under her belt and doing second lead roles in quality shows for a while. It's not that I wish anything bad on her; just don't want to see her in a lead role until she's earned it with her acting resume.

That tells you how bad she was! Like YY says below, she just stands around looking confused, with her mouth half open all the time. She really does! My brain wanted to go into auto-shutdown anytime she appeared onscreen just so I didn't have to watch her, which greatly hurt my ability to enjoy the show. So yes, she ruined the drama for me. I'm not criticising vainly, she was genuinely horrible, and I wish more than anyone that she wasn't. Instead, I am left with 16 lost hours of life that I will NEVER. GET. BACK. (as you can see, I couldn't finish it...)

To be fair, the writer and director are also hugely at fault for forcing that intolerable romance when the chemistry was appalling.

I don't know about this one. I love Kang Ha Neul, but my love is not strong enough to stomach another drama with Hyeri. If the drama takes place in the island 90% of the time, it means that she will be talking constantly. Her voice, well, is not my favorite. However, there are some positives:

- No love triangle
- No evil mother-in-laws
- No trucks of doom
- No geniuses
- No chaebols
- No products placement (unless they save products from the wreckage, like Wilson in Castaway)

One potential positive is Kang Ha Neul shirtless, hunting for his meal. Taking showers in a waterfall. Mmmm. If this happens I will watch, ready to fast forward at the first thing that annoys me.

I adore Eunji, but any hope of seeing her in a drama in 2016 is rapidly slipping away. I hope she does one in 2017, and that it's successful - of the three Answer Me leading ladies, she's the most watchable.

I had the same thought when I watched Minah in Gong Shim! How much better would Deuk Soon have been if it was Minah instead?

I never watched Minah before Gong Shim, honestly was reluctant at first. But she was good. Her chemistry with two leading men also great.

I hope Eunji will comeback next year, as early as possible.

You tell me about Eunji -_- but she keeps talking about acting so i'll be hopeful and wait for her comeback, preferably this year. I need her in another rom-com ><

*reunion as main romantic leads, please!

I feel like we need to specify that now, to avoid being threatened with a spectre like the thankfully averted casting reunion of Yoon Doojoon and Kim Seul-gi ...... as siblings.

0

Definitely joining the circle.
And definitely replying the end part of ep 8.

I'm fine even with short drama like Page Turner or Puberty Medley as long as they are the leads, as long as no best friend loves my crush thing. Damn, can I even ask for a kissing scene? That would be too much, right?
Ok. Just them together as the leads. Enough. No more greed.

0

I swear SGG is the first time I have actually wanted to clone the girl so the two boys could have one each of her. She had equally amazing chemistry with them both, even though on a story level, I rooted for Yeol/Yeon-doo harder.

And that ep 8 ending..... Ji-soo gives really swoonworthy hugs. There needs to be a repeat of that if they ever do reunite!

0

yea I'm not even greedy, a special drama with good writing and plot is better than a draggy drama.

yeaaa, I mean i rooted for Y/Y couple since day 1 but then HJ and YD, i mean Jisoo and Eunji started having more interaction and i was like WHATJUSTHAPPENED like you can't do it to me drama!! for once let me ship peacefully!!lol NGL I felt so bad like at ep8-9 when i realized that i'm looking forwards more to HJ/YD scenes. like i knew there's gonna be heartbreak but screw it. lol but yup just blame it all Eunjisoo chemistry, they just fit, the emotions were so point, i can totally see them in a angsty melo drama anyday and it's gonna be the best thing ever.. ah

There's that upcoming adaptation Mermaid prince that have yet a cast and i'm crossing fingers for Eunji to consider it. It's gonna be so different to her previous role which is great and a challenge for her. even though it's rom-com genre.

0

Eunji!!!!! THE idol actress as far as I'm concerned. Have really missed her.

How do main writers pull out from a project? So they aren't the ones who come up with the story idea?
So is it:
1) Someone else comes up with the idea and writers who can work with the idea joins the project
2) Writers come up with the story idea themselves
etc
Could someone clarify?

Javabeans, the drama never lost Song Jina, she was never the writer in the first place. The production company clarified ages ago that she was only the supervisor and the drama was to be written by Kim Bandi (Angry Mom) from start to end.

The drama wasn't rejected by stations either, there was another article months ago that they were purposely pushing the production to next year so they can do pre-production (since there will be overseas shooting).

And Yuri is still attached to the drama, she was offered the second lead from the start, not the main lead.

Is it just me, or does 'successful idol with prickly personality' describe almost all idols in kdramaland ever? I mean yeah, the formula is only there all the time because it works but stilllllllllllllll...

I mean, don't fix it if it ain't broke, but all the same I can't help but also kind of long for the day when we get some idol character who acts like a cold bad boy in front of the press (his manager insists it's good for his rep and drawing in fangirls), but is secretly just some shy, pun-loving dork who snorts when he laughs too hard.

Come on, drama land. I know you want it as much as I do...

The only time I've actually liked the 'successful idol with a prickly personality' was when said idol was female. Specifically, Cindy from Producers.

Why don't they just cast Rain and make this into a sequel for Come Back Ahjussi or something?

On a serious note, I'm not too keen on Hyeri though. Why can't we get someone like Eunji if they really wanted an idol? Or an idol who can act and has a popular fanbase in China?

I ❤ Hyeri so much in reply 1988. She has special energy in her acting and also so logely. Duk Son has become my favorite Kdrama heroine. :))
I'm so happy that she is back in dramaland again. Actually, I still haven't watched entertainer. But judging by her acting in reply 1988, count me in any drama with hyeri.

Forgetting about the casts, I think the plot itself is not strong. Seems like it's going to be full of cliché anyway, with the successful prickly guy and the ordinary girl. I think this would fit more as a webdrama.

Like some beanies above I want Eunji back in dramaland too. Would be thrilled if she reunited with Ji Soo, Kim Bum or Seo In Guk!

I don't even like saying this because I don't want to believe it: I think if Eunji was considered universally pretty by Koreans (UGH Korean beauty standards) she would have a lot more roles and opportunities :(

Which is awful, because she has such a naturalness on screen and so much potential.

The beauty standard is the only reason people like Suzy get lead roles even though they freaking suck at acting. How many bad and flopping dramas do we have to go through before they realise acting talent can't be substituted by pretty looks?

Required fields are marked *

its the same everywhere.

we cheer and celebrate every nano "improvement" in pretty actors acting

while the so called non-pretty, not needing any improvement actors sit jobless.

0

Exactly. The kind of performance Jung Eunji or Kim.Go Eun would get dragged and exiled from the industry for, when it comes from Suzy or Jin Se Yeon etc it gets claimed as evidence of acting talent and them 'deserving' lead roles.

Being 'pretty' gets some insane benefits in any country but korea is way more extreme. Even the great Hollywood beauties had to show some kind of acting talent to keep getting good roles and good projects, here having nothing other than a pretty face and some media play can make you a top star it seems. You don't see a Hollywood version of Suzy keeping on getting lead roles with top actors and writers after 5 years of bad acting....

0

honestly i can't speak about suzy because i have not seen any of other works, so i do not know if her current performance is improvement or same or deterioration

but i am shocked that Eunji is not considered pretty and is hence offered less roles. She is so warm and relatable onscreen. she just feels natural in her roles.

0

It's not about improvement or deterioration, it's just her acting is still so bad even now. Even the 'improved' acting isn't fit for lead roles, her UF acting isn't even as good as Jung Eunji's worst performance.

I also don't understand why Eunji doesn't get more offers for acting when she is so talented but this beauty standard really is stupid.

0

This has been getting me so confused, the Korean beauty standard. Eunji is sometimes gorgeous, sometimes charming, sometimes cute, sometimes shining. In which she appears so charming in my eyes, people still consider her not pretty. My friends told me that yes, based on K-beauty she's considered not pretty.

Even when I have been so long following K-dramaworld, I still cannot understand why beauty has to be the first raport for actress.

I feel like I must be the only person in the world who is super excited about this plot, lmao, it just sounds really fun to me to have a bunch of idols dropped in the middle of an island like a fish out of water. Although Gaia was so much the better name.

I adore Hyeri (and I've thankfully never seen Entertainer), but I admit I'd rather someone else for this, because I can already imagine her in this role and I'm guessing she'll only be serviceable. Is Moon Ga Young of lead age yet? I want to see her in something. And I'm a fan of Kim Bo Ra as well. I really need them to start getting roles like these beyond the golden trifecta of Sohyun, Yoojung and Saeron.

Oh I do like the plot. And I'd love to see Kang Ha-neul in this (if only to finally have him lead something). But I'm also nervous about Hyeri's casting. I won't skip it if she signs on, but I'm still hoping they can find another idol actress to do it.

0

Required fields are marked *

No... Just please, no.

This drama needs to either lose Kang Ha Neul or it needs to lose Hyeri. I know it sounds cliche, but he's too good for her. She needs to take a break from acting and go for more acting classes or something. And if anyone wants to argue that she wasn't in Ji Sung's league either and she starred in a drama with him, I would say that is precisely the point I'm making. Her inadequacies were glaringly obvious in that drama.

First of all plot is weak, overused, painful to watch. I`m not sure who wants to watch jerk idol bullying pitiful plain jane on deserted island till they fall in love. Is that adventuraous part of this drama? Second Hyeri as lead again? Wasn`t Entertainer proof enough that she can`t act. And i`m sorry Hyeri fans and lovers yes i have seen Reply1988 and she was bad in it too. 1st half was bearable but in 2nd we head dead fish expression (minus kiss) most of the time. Tho kiss looked horrid as well with her face looking like shes eating Subway sandwich with closed eyes. And nope she never improved since 2012, was the same in Seonam high school investigators, Hyde Jakyll and me, Tasty Life. I just dont get it why would KHN accept this after Scarlet Heart, Retrial, Dongju, Twenty, Like for Likes. Even if its first lead role he deserves much better. At this point Yuri and Chanyeol are in better postion as cameo appearance. I hope he will decline this offer.

Well, I like her, but Entertainer was just bad to start with and her pairing with Ji Sung did not work (she was good with the other guy). I think these two will be cute together. Though I wish her agency would let her rest and learn more being shoving her into lead roles all the time. But Kang Ha Neul who has never had a lead role is not too good for this... he's also not some outstanding talent either. She was mismatched with someone like Ji Sung, but not this guy.

Honestly, I like Girl's Day but I think Hyeri needs to stop taking the lead roles and take a couple of smaller characters in well-written, well-casted dramas. She was really good for a rookie in Reply, but since then I think the pressure of continuing her streak ruined her acting. There's Minah, who worked her way up from tons of little roles in dramas and then did great with Gong Shim. I don't know, can't we get Eunji or IU next to Kang Haneul? At least let him finally be put in a good drama for once if he's going to be the lead.

I guess talent doesn't count anymore when it comes to casting these idols. I understand that they want to get experience in other fields, but sometimes you have to admit that acting is not your thing, like cooking is not mine. I have a lot of things to say, but I feel disappointed when I see idols who posses mediocre acting skills being cast in good projects along side talented actors. Hyeri's face is expressionless when she acts and she cries like a kid in the supermarket because his mom didn't bought him the toy.

Kang Ha-neul signed, checked.

Song Ji-nah writer returned, checked.
And using my power, I'll bring Jung Eun-ji in, checked.

Ha-neul and Eun-ji once had their hands locking to each other for announcing one award. And I can assure you, they look completely fine--if perfect sounds too subjective for some of you.

Wait, why it sounds more like my dream instead of everyone's?
