Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 27-June 2, 2019

It’s been a very eventful week, with plenty of premieres and finales keeping folks glued to their screens. The Monday-Tuesday slot said goodbye to dramas My Fellow Citizens and Special Labor Inspector Jo and said hello to newcomer The Wind Blows. And listed at the bottom, the poor mystery romance Abyss went down to 2.3 percent, its lowest rating yet.

Thursday saw the end of rom-com Her Private Life, which never strayed far from 2.5 percent. The newcomers from last week, Angel’s Last Mission and One Spring Night, beat out Her Private Life‘s finale with 8.4 percent and 6.4 percent respectively. However, of all the things this week, my eyes gravitated towards the much anticipated Arthdal Chronicles. First episode and it’s already got a whopping 6.7 percent. And for a cable show, that’s pretty damn good.

How I wish Nokdu Flower can get out from the 6-7% mark, because it's one of a very well-made drama, but apparently this show seems to suffer the same fate as Haechi. Sigh... Much love for the crew and cast. I hope it won't discourage them.

Hi @gadis. I actually think NOKDU’s rating are decent. At this point half way through its run it has its core audience that is going to ride it out I would think.
O/t. Whoever is responsible for ND’s wiki page has not updated its ratings since episode 12.

There are many things that affects the ratings. Too long for me to make a list.

As a fan of sageuks and Korean history I'm happy that I finally get to see what I'd call a quality sageuk that fits my taste.
I just hope that NOKDU's reputation for quality will be weight over the ratings as not to discourage other production teams from making this kind of sageuks.
I get that it's expensive but it's so worth it.

Dramawiki always update ratings on the same day.

Is Haechi as good as Nokdu ? If it is I really need to watch it.

Personally, it's as good as Nokdu. It's the kind of sageuk where we can actually learn a thing or two because it closely based on real historical figures. Though I have to warn you that unlike Nokdu, Haechi's story mostly revolved around the palace politics and intrigues.

Hi @megane. In my opinion they are both excellent dramas. HAECHI had a fine cast. It was my first Jung Il-woo drama and he was impressive. For me the award for best performance by an actor in HAECHI has to go to character actor Lee Geung-young as Minister Min. He gave an awesome performance. I really enjoyed Go Ara’s performance until her role was affected by an accident on set.
As @gadis notes HAECHI is heavy on palace politics with a slew of characters to remember. You always will have something like that with a sageuk but for me what made watching the initial episodes a challenge was that the final 7 episodes of THE CROWNED CLOWN overlapped the beginning of HAECHI and I found it difficult watching both at the same time.
Bottom line I can recommend all three NF, HAECHI and TCC.

Yeah... I also need to watch the end of The Crowned Clown. I stopped because I needed to watch something light, but i really want to finish it.
8 years ago I was a big fan of Jung Il-woo, but i haven't seen him in anything since this time, so it really makes me curious.
Thank you for your answer !

I haven’t watched Nokudo yet (all free time was spent on the outstanding Nirvana in Fire), but Haechi was excellent.

I see the Arthdal poster on the DB recap list below. I would think a show with this much hype should be recap-worthy ...

It just doesn’t sound interesting to me. But the bad wigs seen in the trailers are pretty darn funny.

I’m super curious about Angel’s ratings next week, since the last few seconds of this week’s episode introduced quite a twist.

I wanna start Arthdal but people are posting so many memes about it, I don’t know if I can take it seriously... 🤣

I haven't been able to take Arthdal seriously(after I found out that Jang Dong Gun has better hair than me) and 1st episode turned out better than I expected.

Me too! I am intrigued. I was expecting him not to be a good man because of the way he treats people and he's kind of obsessive towards our girl. But that drop I didn't expect!

All of your comments about Arthdal make me wary of starting it lol

I'm glad Angel's Last Mission's ratings are good. It's the only drama I'm following at the moment and I'm enjoying it a lot. Hope it's ratings keep rising next week.

I am assuming that Angel's Last Mission got a jump due to roll over audiences. I am not saying that it isn't good, but I am surprised at how high the numbers are right out of the gate.

I think it might also be due to the fact that there's an idol acting in it. Whenever I go to video clips of the drama, all the comments are about L lol

She made a good choice by picking MY GOLDEN LIFE. KBS weekend family dramas has been a sure hit for a long time.
MGL was full of talented and beloved veteran actors like Chun Ho-jin who took home the daesang award.

I think she has more influence in the ratings after MGL having being expose to more viewers.

Idols have really little effect on ratings. They only peddle online comments.

Shin Hye-sun has been a ratings driver since My Golden Life. The k tv viewers love her.

Idols may bring more investors and FCs than ratings which is just as important to the production people.
Shin Hye-sun is the driving force behind the ratings.

Yes but we are talking about ratings here. And Eunjo made an assumption that more comments on L means the idol brought in ratings. I was just pointing out that isn’t the case.

I hate the way idols - or the currently super hot actor - hype up the ratings of mediocre and downright bad dramas. It just encourages more bad dramas. I’m not familiar with anyone in ALM, but after 2 episodes, I dumped it. It’s a silly story that’s been done - and done much better - many, many times. Feels like one of those awful Hallmark romance specials. No thanks.

Sometimes the drama that aired before helps. In this case, it was Doctor Prisoner and the ratings were pretty high.

That is what I am thinking. Historically, idol dramas don't pull the high ratings even though they have a strong fan base, but they were diligent in casting the female lead and it followed a hugely popular drama.

KBS has dominated the wed-thurs slot since Liver or Die in late Feb. And then Dr Prisoner. I expected Angel to lead the pack if the story is interesting. Which i believe it is since a lot are talking about it (I stopped at ep 2). And KBS is promoting Angel non-stop. Angel is like their baby on KBS instagram right now. Haha

I feel bad about abyss, even park bo young can't save the ratings. I always watch her dramas and i think she needs to pick a different role next time. I think viewers are already tired of her dramas with fantasy elements. Bad writing can't be saved by popular actors.

I'm glad that one spring night increased in ratings. The drama might not be for everyone but i am currently obsessed with this drama. I hope it continues to be good.

I'm sad Secret Life of My Secretary's ratings are as low as they are, although I guess I get it. The plot's pretty cliché and overdone at this point, so I'm sure Korean viewers are bored of it. It's hitting (most) of my sweet spots right now, but I can acknowledge it has weak points. (Not that I currently care about them, as I'm getting almost exactly what I want out of the story right now, lol.)
