Hwang Jung-eum eyes SBS romance with Namgoong Min

Will it be a TV reunion for Hwang Jung-eum (Lucky Romance) and Namgoong Min (Falsify)? They’re both in contention for a new drama titled Handsome Guy and Jung-eum, seven years after they played siblings in the heartwarming weekend drama Can You Hear My Heart.

Namgoong Min’s possible casting was announced a couple weeks ago, and now it’s Hwang Jung-eum who is considering the leading role opposite him. Namgoong Min’s character is named Hoon-nam, which is a groanworthy pun since that also translates to Handsome Guy. Not to be outdone, the character Hwang Jung-eum is up to play is also named Jung-eum. Well, it’ll be easy to keep the names straight in this one, at least.

The two leads have differing stances on love (naturally): He’s thoroughly analyzed theories on love and rejects the idea of romance and dating, while she has made it her life’s goal to marry someone she loves. Her character is a former competitive diver who now works as a couples manager. The plot incorporates a variety of characters who have difficulty dating, and in the process of helping them navigating the tricky waters of modern romance, they also come to understand what real love is.

These are two actors with a lot of personal charisma who can be really charming when they have good chemistry with their co-stars, so I’m looking forward to seeing them fumble their way through modern love. I especially love Namgoong Min in the rom-com genre (he’s just so weird), and I’d like to see Hwang Jung-eum bounce back with a good project after her last was a dud (Lucky Romance, where she played the world’s most frustrating doormat of a heroine), so I’ll be hoping they both confirm the project.

Handsome Guy and Jung-eum will be an SBS drama to follow the upcoming Jang Geun-seok and Han Ye-ri drama Switch, and plans to premiere in May.

Whoa, you seem to have misunderstood me. Like I said, "this is wholly and only my trauma from Lucky Romance talking." It's nothing to do with HJE's acting, lol.

I actually love how HJE portrays zany characters, like the female lead in She Was Pretty. The reason Lucky Romance was a flop wasn't because of HJE's portrayal of the female lead, but simply because of how awfully the female lead (and really, the story overall) was written. I can feel waves of anger and exasperation brewing within me just thinking about it honestly, gah.

But anyway, because that's the last drama I watched HJE in, I still associate her face with the female lead from there.

Hence, stifled screaming. XD

When she cried in "Secret", I cried buckets. This actress is tailor-made for melodramas seriously, I like her best in that genre. I used to be so-so about her but when it's time for good acting, she really delivers. So much so that I barely notice anymore whatever put me off before.

So NGM will be going the PSJ way with HJE?
I really really like NGM but not sure about her. ..hopefully I can grow to like her...but won't it be fun if a love expert is foiled by a superstitious fortune believing woman. ..though I don't want her to carry over her last role. ..ofc she won't. .but what if she does? So confused.

She's a software engineer, notably a very good one, but she would put herself in danger, sleeping with random guy, just to follow prophecy. I enjoy reading horoscope as much as the next ahjumma, and superstition theme actually made me interested with the drama, but this is too much.

I've tried her in two and she's horrible. She has this screechy voice and is too overdramatic for my liking. I also can't see her next to Namgoong Min. Now the question is whether I can watch the show (if only for Namgoong Min) and suffer seeing her over-acting again! *sighhhh*

She needs a very strong director who would put a stop on her screeching, wailing and general overacting. She is not a bad actress per say, but she needs to be restrained a bit more.

HJE is excellent in melo roles and is a very talented actress. But I personally cannot stand her in comedic roles. She overacts so SO bad. It is not entertaining, but annoying. Most dramas she is in she thankfully tends to mellow out, but the first about 6 episodes she horribly overacts.

Yeah, I agree. If not that I was very interested in KMHM's premise, I would have given up by the first 3 episodes with all the screeching and weird faces that was supposed to be funny but were just WTF.

Add that with me being unfamiliar with all the actors involved save for Park Seo Joon from Witch's Romance( he was probably one of the things that kept me going, aside from curiosity at the synopsis), it was quite the test of patience.

Thankfully, I came to love Ji Sung( looked a lot like Lee Byun Hun) and Hwa Jung Eum toned it down and her character was shown to work well with the personalities.

@missjb @gem28
do you know where we can stream this show again?
I haven't renewed any of my subscriptions for this month and I can't find any good .srt file about this drama,

1

@xiaojingyan you can watch it on both dramafever or viki to rewatch.
@gem28, i actually like HJE - KJW pairing since, they are just so sweet to each other. But i find HJE - NGM dynamics on each other is more interesting to explore. I actually tear up watching reminiscene their past scene.

@missjb
Thanks a lot

1

Yes! Yes! And remember that scene where they are sitting on the steps and she covers the lower half of his face and he leans over and kisses her, but because her hand is there, he ends up just kissing her hand. AHHHH! I know her and Joon Ha were great and all, but I always felt soooo bad for Ma Roo oppa. Still the bromance was even better than the romance, so all in all, I loved the drama. Would love to see these two together again, though!!

That drama was so heart warming. And they have good chemistry. Hopefully, the script is solid. Lucky Romance was unlucky for her. Terrible writing for the lead actress, nobody could make that role work and I mean nobody. Also the moment this article was up, I braced myself. Comment section would be flooded with some form of negativity or other. I mean she has a vast body of work and stellar acting career but there are certain people who will keep complaining about her screeching over and over and over again like a broken tape. Unfortunate, I would love it if she says yes. I miss her on screen.

It isn't surprised to see how many people are against this pairing, but I'm up for it. I miss to see Hwang Jung-eum on my screen and rather to see Nam Goong-min paired with the lesser actress, this is an awesome pairing. Hwang Jung-eum is good, and she isn't overact in all roles unless if the role required to do so. I have seen her a lot in between melodrama and romcom. I just hope they will tone down her character, maybe kinda sassy but not too annoying and over the top.

This drama title name ‘Hoon Nam Jung Eum’ comes from ‘Hoon Min Jung Eum’.
‘Eum’ is not commonly used as Korean girls’ name letter. She is Only one actress named ‘Jung eum’. ‘Hoon Min Jung Eum’ is officially? original? Korean letter named by King Sejong.
Actress Hwangjungeum’ parent named their child ‘Hoon’, ‘Min’, ‘Jung-eum’.
So, when first news of this drama casting reviled, I think that, “Others actress can’t take this leading lady role”.
And, this drama script writer set a plan leading actress role for her.
‘Jung-eum’ is very unique & rarely used name.
When “She was pretty” script writer makes drama, She said that, she makes leading lady(HJ) thinking aout ‘Hwangjungeum’.
And This drama is same condition.

I also know that they use Hoon-nam for handsome guys with a real nice personality .

And.... Between all of those wired titles, this is now the most honest hehehe

"Giant" (2010) was her best drama for me. That show was the last epic show of its kind.
When the script and directing is that good then everyone does well including the child and teen actors ( Yeo Jin-goo, Nam Ji-hyun, Kim Soo-hyun).
She has been in some really good dramas like "Golden Time," "Secret" etc.
Her rom.coms were my least favorite. I don't think I've ever finish one.

I hope she'd do some serious drama once in a while.
Hopefully she'd get to work with the husband and wife writer duo Jang Young-cheol and Jung Kyung-soon again or with PD Yu In-sik.

so true. maybe i've seen the serious portrayal of HJE, hence i can say she's a decent actress. my fave would have to be Golden Time for her with LSG. she was overshadowed by the brothers in Giant (which is epic by the way!), but she was good in that also!
she was lovely in CYHMH:) the cast was good in that drama JBS & YYJ!

I agree but the brothers were veteran actors and she just started. I love the 3 siblings from the beginning and the child actors started it off well. They were the heart of the show.
"Giant" is a reminder of the good old days. So many great memories.
Highlight: Jung Bo-suk best villain ever.

"Golden Time" of course was really good. One of the best medical dramas and she did well there with 2 capable PDs.
I've seen "Secrets" so I do like her more in those kind of heavier dramas.
Although I'm not a fan I don't try to avoid her like those sucky ones that keep getting lead roles in sageuks.

I agree, she is better in heavier role. I hope she will be more selective in the future.. Probably choose thriller. Endless Love had so many potentials with her and Jung Kyung-ho but err.. it was dragging. Maybe melodrama makes her extra tired, since she really going all out.

It has been a long time from Giant's days. I miss to see the same kind of drama.

I know Hwang Jung-eum has her detractors, and some of their criticism is warranted, but I like her and when she's on she can deliver emotional points home. As for Namgoong Min, he's taken his career to the point where he surprises us with every new project. It'll be interesting to see what he has in store for us this time.

She just needs a director who'll tell her to reel in it. I personally love HJE so I'll look forward to this if she takes it. Her last couple dramas weren't that great (especially for her character) so hopefully they actually give her a decent character to work with this time.

I think she is a good actor when she is directed well and not screeching, but she does have tendency to go over the top. I do not judge her from the performance in Lucky Romance because that character was just unforgivably written as the naivest most stupidly trusting doormat with not even the smallest grain of sense.

This is a pairing that could either be amazing because they are both actors willing to take chances, or could go horribly awry because they are both actors willing to take chances.

I love her when she plays it soft, gentle and vulnerable, but the "zaniness", hyperness and - as other have put it - screeching and screaming drive me up a wall. I'm hoping that she's toned it down since her time off to have her baby, hoping for an understated performance if she accepts. If not, poor Namgoong Min.

I couldn't get into Lucky Romance, so I'm glad to be able to see her on screen again. Both she and NGM are capable of that quirky atmosphere.

I know HJE is infamous for her screechy performances, but
sometimes, I do wonder if directors pick her sometimes specifically because she can do that screechy, over-the-top performance that they consider good comedy and want in their dramas.

I think she's a pretty good actress during those toned-down moments and in melodramatic moments. I feel like she conveys emotions very well, despite some unfortunate plastic surgery choices. Even when she's over-the-top in the beginning episodes of a drama, I know that she'll get me feeling for her soon enough.

She was amazing in Secret but it's sad that people only remember her by the roles she's done that haven't complimented her real acting skills (such as KMHM and She Was Pretty). The amount of negativity directed at Hwang Jung-eum is disheartening, but not surprising. She must be an easy target because everything, from from the tonality of her voice to how she moves to how she looks, is disparaged. How is it that these people, who profess to pass judgment on HJE as an actress, only do so on the basis of Lucky Romance and 'CYHMH'? It must be only a handful of people watched Secret and Kill Me, Heal Me, because, coupled with Endless Love and She Was Pretty, there would be no doubt that HJE has the requisite emotional and physical range of a good, solid, entertaining, and engaging actor.

Yeah, you'll find complains about her screech, her overactive and lastly her plastic surgery.....the funny thing is all the actors and actresses who are wrinkle free, have good hair, complexion....none of it is all natural. Its just not that obvious. She seems like a favorite punching bag. And she didn't even screech in Lucky Romance, her character was ridiculous, absurd but that has more to do with writing. As for Kill Me, Heal Me, the PD could have told her to tone it down but he never did. I've seen plenty BTS....this woman isn't afraid to look ugly or physical comedy. She does as told, works hard, her costars love her and production crew is fond of her work ethic. So, lets just hate on her based on two dramas forever. If I had done what they do to Ji Sung after seeing Swallow the Sun, I'd have never seen Secret.

The first drama that I saw of her’s was The Secret and I really enjoyed watching her act there. It was actually restraint and very well done. But I do get the concerns of overacting because she did do that in KMHM, so, I’m hoping this drama is more on the lines of The Secret because even NGM tends to go overboard at times with his expressions.

I was tentatively looking forward to Min Namgoong's new drama (I watched him in "Chief Kim" and liked him there), but I guess I should look elsewhere. I've watched Hwang Jung-eum in "She Was Pretty" and in "Kill Me, Heal Me" and she was a major minus for both imo. She was a bit better in the latter than in the former, but in both cases she over-acted a lot and was just kinda unbelievable. She took characters who, on paper, were 3D and flattened them into planar caricatures.
