Casting news for beauty-oriented rom-com People With Flaws

Oh Yeon-seo, Ahn Jae-hyun

MBC’s upcoming rom-com, People With Flaws, is rounding out its cast. The show will feature Ahn Jae-hyun (Beauty Inside) as a flower boy obsessed with good looks and Oh Yeon-seo (Hwayugi) as someone who hates handsome people. Joining Ahn Jae-hyun and Oh Yeon-seo as part of the supporting cast are: Kim Seul-gi (Lookout), Goo-won (Introducing Father, Discovery of Love), and Heo Jung-min (Top Star Yoo-baek).

Kim Seul-gi plays a Korean language teacher who is Oh Yeon-seo’s character’s best friend. She uses at least 70% of her salary on luxury items and beauty treatments that “help her maintain her dignity and class,” and she thinks that wanting a handsome and capable spouse is just a woman’s natural inclination.

On the other hand, Goo-won plays a health teacher who is Ahn Jae-hyun’s character’s younger cousin. He has a one-sided crush on Oh Yeon-seo’s character which unwittingly leads him into a love triangle with his cousin as his rival.

Finally, Heo Jung-min plays an entertainment agency CEO and Ahn Jae-hyun’s character’s best friend. Being burnt out by the fakeness in his industry, he comes to admire and fall for the straightforward honest emotions displayed by Kim Seul-gi’s character.

Well, Heo Jung-min and Kim Seul-gi together obviously means comic gold, so I’m definitely checking this one out! MBC Wednesday-Thursday drama People With Flaws, directed by Oh Jin-seok (Yong-pal) and written by Ahn Shin-yoo, will begin airing in November of this year.

So the obsessed with looks flower boy is going to fall in love with the very beautiful woman. And the very beautiful woman hates handsome people?

Yes, maybe the writers believe it would be too much for koreans if the flower boy could fall for the average girl.

Maybe they will surprise us and mix it all up.

That character description reminds me about something that I saw about Kim Young-kwang. It was a few years ago but he had said he only likes pretty people.

I hate when they try to pretend drop-dead gorgeous people are ugly. It's kind of annoying. Actually it is Very annoying

I still remember watching Kim Sam-soon and being shocked when everyone called her fat and/or ugly. Wha...

I felt the same when watching that. No way is she ugly or fat. I would love to be her size in that show, lol.

Exactly!!

I read on Soompi that Oh Yeonseo's character hates beautiful men precisely because of the annoyance that comes with having three handsome brothers. She probably acted as the mail carrier between her bros and their suitors.

Probably ^-^, watching for Oh Yeon Seo. She was wonderful in Unexpected You (new actress award), Shine or Go Crazy, Please Come Back Mister (Excellent Actress Award), Jang-Bo-Ri (believe she won the 2 top Outstanding Actress 4 that role) and Take-off 2 w/ Kim Seul-Gi. The Hong sisters screwed/sabotaged her in Hwayugi. Fingers crossed this will be good.

The premise does nothing for me, but Kim Seul-gi is in it. So it looks like I'll have to add this one to the watch list.

Hmm, i don't know yet! The female lead is great isln wacky roles (she did well in please come back mister) bit was the sole reason why I dropped Hwayugi. I will wait for the reviews. Kim suel gi is love on the other hand.

HAHAH, I know also both of the other actors, I have seen both of them in many roles and I like them a lot but if the premise is meh and the lead actors not great, nothing can be saved by supporting cast for me... as in Hwayugi...it wasted all of its stellar cast with this female lead....

I did like Oh Yeon-seo very much in Come Back Ajusshi but found her very pretty but bland in everything since.

She played the straight man in Hwayugi. Getting the straight man right is a lot harder than people think. There is a reason the old comedy duos would split the take 60/40, with the straight man taking 60% and the funny man taking 40%. Getting the straight man right is tricky, and absolutely essential. If it's not done right, the funny man falls flat. The straight man is the one who makes the show work. And yet, everyone thinks of the funny man first, because they are more showy.

And now I'm debating whether everyone found Oh Yeon-so bland in Hwayugi because she was the straight man, or if she is just crap at playing the straight man and should stick to funny man parts.

There were a lot of scenes in which she was plain bad at acting in hwayugi. Her character was complex and as she could see ghosts which scared her and she could still use them to her benefits. So for me her character was not of straight person but she lacked total charisma for a person who could stand her own ghosts and be cool. I have seen this problem with a lot of actors, they can mimic the character but are not the character and give all wrong expressions at the wrong place and then the rest of the cast is plain flawless and they look totally mis cast and mis fit.

I only accepted her in Shine or Go Crazy. She's pretty and cute yet boring in many ways.

The female lead does nothing for me—she was horribly one-note in Hwayugi. But Kim Sul-Gi is ❤️❤️❤️.

I think it's very telling that everyone is excited about Kim Seul-gi, while basically silent about the leads, both of whom are likely to be overshadowed by the talent of the supporting cast.

I would like to agree with almost everybody here. I kinda hate vain dramas focused on looks, I couldn't watch "she was pretty" because of that...
Kim Seul-gi doesn't look like typical average diva, but she is pretty for me, pretty enough, even very beautiful. Give her a nice and authentic personality and I am sold.
But I am expecting too much, I suppose. Even when she is here, I am not sure I want to watch this show... sadly.

I don't understand how they chose their casting (after Taecyeon and Lee Yun Hee). Ahn Jae Hyun's acting is not good enough for a first lead role and Oh Yeon Seo was pretty disapointing in A Korean Odyssey (before they screw up the story).

If the channels started to choose good casting, it will help the ratings.
Kim Seul Gi should choose better her projet! She is a good actress.

Hey, if Cha Eun Woo can be a lead then anybody else can be one too, I'm afraid that in case of actors like Kim Seul Gi it's not matter of choice but what it's given to her.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought OYS had a lot of decent acting credits before Hwayugi? I also think it's unfair to blame her for that since it's not exactly as if that character was written well.

Personaly, there is only one drama I liked her, it was Please Come Back, Mister.

The movie Cheese in the Trap was so disapointing too. And we know it's not the character because KGE was really great.

I honestly haven't seen her in anything else, just that I read lots about how people "expected so much more of her" for Hwayugi because of something else she'd done.

Hwayugi's end was bad and we agree it's not the fault of the actors.

But I found her pretty bland when the others were really great like zombie girl, the brother-sister, our dog and pig supernatural creatures, etc.

Thanks for the casting news, @tineybeanie.

I've been a fan of Heo Jung-min since seeing him in SHINE OR GO CRAZY and HYANG DAN. He was a hoot in OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN, and bonkers in TOP STAR YOO BAEK. He slays me when he goes into "the devil made me do it" mode.

Kim Seul-gi is one of my faves. She was great in SPLISH SPLASH LOVE, DISCOVERY OF LOVE, and LOOKOUT. It's high time she got to play first lead, doggone it.

I fully expect they will steal the show out from under the nominal leads. Oh Yeon-seo was in SHINE OR GO CRAZY in cahoots with Jang Hyuk, and had more pizzazz than in HWAYUGI. I was surprised to realize that the first show I saw with Ahn Jae-hyun was the SBS drama special SNOW LOTUS FLOWER / LUCID DREAM on Netflix. He nicely played a Joseon swordsman.

Oh, so this is a SHINE OR GO CRAZY reunion of sorts! (Now for that Jang Hyuk or Honey Lee cameo).

I do think that was my favourite Oh Yeon Seo role, but I’ve only seen her in that and MY SASSY (JOSEON) GIRL... which was pretty bland for a show with “sassy” in its title.

@wishfultoki,
I didn't realize that it was Oh Yeon-seo who had played the erstwhile princess of Later Balhae in SHINE OR GO CRAZY, I just knew that she did a good job as So-so's merchant sidekick and drinking buddy. Heo Jung-min played her useless brother who incurred a huge gambling debt to a Yuan general. He basically promised to marry off his sister to the old warrior as payment of the debt, and she fibbed that she was awaiting the arrival of her bethrothed from Goryeo. HJM played the role in such a way that I didn't hate him, but rather saw him as a whining loser/rascal of a kid brother, IIRC. (It would be interesting to see if he could ever pull off a truly evil villain.)

If memory serves, OYS was saddled with a long-suffering, sacrificial character in HWAYUGI. She and her fate were not a lot of fun, so I couldn't fault the actress for being less than the life of the party. But she did exhibit touching empathy for the ghosts and spirits, and other people in general.

Both OYS and Joo Won got the short end of the stick in MY SASSY [JOSEON] GIRL. I remember receiving a severe case of whiplash in the opening episodes as she carried on like a drunken sailor on a three-day bender. Similar scenes in the original movie MY SASSY GIRL also gave me whiplash -- until I came to understand why Jianna Jun's character, The Girl, drank to oblivion. In reading reviews, I also learned what a groundbreaking film it was for its time -- precisely because The Girl did not behave in the prescribed ladylike fashion. Between all her barfing and beating up Cha Tae-hyun, I was severely tempted to pack it in. But I kept watching, and eventually the twist unfolded, and I loved it.

Alas, MS[J]G was not that great. The high points were Imperial pug Sir Doggy, who was a scene-stealer until he went the way of most companion animals in Kdramas (out of sight, out of mind) -- and Joo Won cutting a fine figure in hanbok. I hated the machinations by his social-climbing mother and bratty little sister to get him married off. Here's hoping to see him in a proper sageuk since he mustered out of the service in February. Or might he have a musical up his sleeve? Whatever. Here's hoping that his drama comeback is every bit as satisfying as Jung Il-woo's triumphal return in HAECHI.

Sorry I got over excited for a second there.
- I'm very tired of Seul Gi being typecast as "unpretty" second leads. *HUMPH*

- And I just got smad again that Seul Gi hasn't been a lead since Splash Splash Love and that Splash Splash Love was only 2 hrs long. *SIGH*.

- The premise sounds... questionable. *WHY*

-I think people hate OYS for Hwayugi too much. I personally blame the writing and directing not her acting for that character (who ofc I never hated as much as everyone else did) *SHRUGS*

- I wanna watch Seul Gi but she'd literally be the only reason I would watch this... *CRIES*

I think Ahn Jaehyun can pull off this role if it asks him to be over-the-top, rather than being cold, the same with Oh Yeonseo. I much enjoyed his comedy performances, such as in "You've Been Surrounded" and "My Love from the Star".
Another reason I'm okay with his casting is his character's background: he is someone who was teased for his looks, which is why he is overly-concerned about his looks. And I think it resonates with Ahn Jaehyun's real-life story of being remarked on his appearance: he once said in Happy Together that when he first got in the modeling gig, an academy (probably a modeling school that also acts as an agency) refused to sign him up because he was ugly and asked him to get eye surgery, though he had won a modeling competition. I saw a photo of him from that time and while he looked the same, I could say that hair and make-up could make a big difference.
