Drama viewership ratings for the week of Sep. 2-8, 2019
by SailorJumun
As the weeks go by, and the dramas go by, ratings continue to surprise me… in how low they’ve gotten. I think we’ve all figured out by now that online streaming is mostly to blame, but I still find it sad for the cast and crew. I mean, I’m not watching Let Me Hear Your Song, but does it really deserve 2 percent ratings week after week?
I was also surprised to see finales getting relatively low numbers. Wednesday-Thursday shows Justice and Doctor Detective ended with 7 percent and 3.9 percent respectively — on two big networks. As always, cable took the lead, as Class of Lies ended with an impressive 4.8 percent.
Over the weekend, we had medical drama Doctor John, which ended with pretty good numbers, too. Still, considering this was a Ji Sung drama, I was expecting something a little higher. At least one thing went as expected: historical fantasy Arthdal Chronicles returned to finish its run and came out with 6.1 percent.

Song - deserves it.
Melodramatic Devil - not
Trash show with 3% - stings u but still better than that rogue doctor and here we have 2 directors wrecking their brain over a script to make it look good. They r too serious about their projects but you wonder how come these trash script r getting approval at all.

I watch trash dramas. Every now and then I just want to relax and turn off my brain.
Even bad dramas can be hilarious. I finished watching DR JIN just for laughs and it wasn't even a comedy. Consider me weird lol.
When it comes to ratings I do feel bad for really good dramas like "Melodramatic" that is being underappreciated. I hope the low ratings won't scare away PD Lee for good. His last film almost dethrone ROARING CURRENTS, the #1 highest grossing movie of all time.

No listing for Graceful Family. Cable channel MBN must be considered an outlier. The drama got a high of 3.7 for Ep. 5, so it's competitive.

That's pretty impressive for MBN but I don't blame DB for not keeping their ratings on track. MBN/DRAMAX don't do dramas in a regular basis.
I wouldn't say 3.7% is impressive for TVN and JTBC or even OCN because they have been around longer with more subscriptions but for smaller stations its pretty good.

Omomo. Devil's ratings 😱. Devil is the only drama I'm kinda watching out of this batch. I personally find it heavy, slow, confusing and requires me to think hard to relate stuff...which in turn made me zone out while watching. Huhu.
Himnae cast and crew! The acting is good, but the plot might be for a niche audience.

Surprisingly i was on board devil in first few episodes but i started noticing the pattern you mentioned. It does seem somewhat like a chore because there's lots of filler. I'm not upto recent episodes but have ni motivation to continue either.

Interesting how AC gets 6% while HDL always maintains 8% at the same time slot. The 2% must be very selective only for HDL. I am enjoying Graceful Family too, very entertaining with good acting, 3.7 is very impressive for a cable drama.

Hotel Del Luna finished with over 12% and Arthdal, with bigger hype, budget and the same time slot resumes at 6%. I think the ratings might go lower too, as I found yesterday's episode anticlimactic. Would Eunsom get on with his story already? At least something happened for him but he's still a long way away from the hero role we've been waiting for. It's all a little stagnant.

If ARTHDAL just stopped dilly dallying and moved on with the story they might have had better ratings. Still, it’s surprising that they haven’t lost viewers in spite of dragging Part 1 so much and inserting that weird month hiatus before Part 3.

I wonder if the Arthdal hiatus was also to allow some time for new audience to binge watch part1-2 before part 3 starts with hopes that part 3 will get more viewers and higher ratings.

I'm skeptical of such a strategy but I guess with the way Netflix works people might just click on it and then find out they still had to wait for Part 3.
I believe their official reason was that they needed more time to finish editing.

I find this super interesting, because it seems like tracking digital viewership would actually be easier for networks than the old television ratings systems. but maybe there's privacy laws involved?

I can believe the ratings. There's nothing new being recapped here, offered on Viki, Netflix, or my go to streaming site that has piqued my interest.
I've been watching Camping Club on Youtube since Viki, despite reporting for over a month that episodes "coming soon" still don't have any posted. A byproduct of the coverage on AJH's messy marriage fallout is that the comments have me thinking about checking out New Journey to The West.

Be melodramatic deserves better ratings. I am really enjoying it. Doctor John had all the veteran actors pulling out all the stops, but the script sort of fizzled.

Congrats for Class of Lies ! 🎉
It's pretty impressive for a drama without A-list actors 😉

Remember the times when normal stations used to have ratings with 10% dramas and that was considered bad, LOL what in the world is happening where are the good dramas. Dr John was good idk what it did so bad in ratings I was expecting it to be at least 17% considering the lead actor.
Be melodramatic is really good until now very underrated maybe it's just because the cast is not that famous.
I don't get what is the hype to Song Ki but even Jang Dong Dung couldn't make me stand the drama I hope he gets the project he SO deserves soon SK free, I really can't stand the guy, idk how he got free with it and the audience is still giving it 6% to that CG mess

For "Be Melodramatic" is not only because of the famous casts, but it's more on the story. The story is too real; too painful; and too honest.. not everyone can accept that as drama viewers are getting used to watch dramas with chaebol, and some other typical K-drama stuffs.
I personally LOVE "Be Melodramatic". For me, it's just like the adult version of "Age of Youth."
