New teaser and stills for KBS Tale of Nokdu with Kim So-hyun, Jang Dong-yoon, Kang Tae-oh

In the run-up to the premiere of KBS’s latest sageuk rom-com Tale of Nokdu, we’re getting a slew of new promos including a new poster, stills, and a video teaser of next week’s premiering episode.

The drama is based on a well-loved webtoon by the same name and takes place in a mysterious widows’ village where the titular character takes refuge, Jeon Nokdu played by Jang Dong-yoon (Dance Sports Girls). Due to his circumstances, he puts on the guise of a woman in order to stay hidden in the village. But, as it turns out, he isn’t the only one there with a secret. Namely Dong Dong-joo, played by Kim So-hyun (Love Alarm), a short-haired gisaeng-in-training who doesn’t want to become a gisaeng.

Of course, complicating their romance is Kang Tae-oh (My First First Love) who is also vying for Dong-joo’s affections. Described as a Joseon chef who knew Dong-joo from childhood, his character of Cha Yul-moo is one of a few new characters that were created for the drama’s adaptation of the webtoon.

In the newly released stills, we get a glimpse of the love triangle to come with both Jang Dong-yoon and Kang Tae-oh offering their hands to Kim So-hyun. Standing in-between them and their horses, Kim is left to decide if or who she wants to ride with. (Maybe one day we’ll see a drama where the girl rides by herself and the two boys ride together?)

Although most of the promo material features the main cast, we finally get to see some of the supporting actors in the new teaser which includes Lee Moon-shik (The Fiery Priest) and Yoon Yoo-sun (Abyss).

The teaser starts with Jang Dong-yoon explaining to a young girl that there’s something he has to do outside of the island that they live on. As the background music becomes louder and more dire, we cut to a wide shot of Jang standing with the girl and Lee Moon-shik on the left side of the screen. From the right, a woman runs in screaming: “Nokdu! There’s an emergency at your house!” The scene quickly changes to Jang Dong-yoon fighting off a group of uniformed men and we see one of them injured and running away. After the fight, Lee Moon-shik fervently whispers to Jang that they should work together to find them. There is a quick intercut of a man following another man through a forest at night before returning to Jang Dong-yoon who is stunned to arrive at a brightly colored village. As he asks why there are only women here, the camera pans around to show the women panicking that there is a man in the village. One woman taps Jang on the shoulder from behind, smiling at him, and he screams as she throws him out.

The music changes to a lighter and twinkly tune and we cut to Jang Dong-yoon disguising himself as a woman. In his new appearance, he approaches Yoon Yoo-sun and desperately asks if she can help him by letting him stay at her gibang (gisaeng house). Cut to a close-up of Yoon as she replies, slightly appalled, “Sorry, what?” The scene quickly transitions to Kim So-hyun who enters through a doorway and is shocked to discover Jang Dong-yoon inside one of the gibang rooms. She pushes Jang away from something and yells casually (in banmal), “What are you doing?” before switching to honorifics as she asks “Why are you in this room?” Hurt and dishevelled, Jang Dong-yoon replies that the head gisaeng (Yoon Yoo-sun) gave him permission to stay in this room. As the two actors glare at each other, the teaser ends with their joint voice-over: “Joseon rom-com Tale of Nokdu premiering September 30.”

Upcoming drama Tale of Nokdu will be airing in just a few days on September 30, and broadcasts Mondays and Tuesdays on KBS.

This drama looks so cute! Can't wait to watch! And a refreshing change to have the man be the one "in disguise" as a lady.

Whoever is doing their make up has made sure it compliments them in the best way. Especially Jang dong-yun looks so pretty as girl without looking heavily made up.

Don't fan shame me, but I don't like Jang Hyuk, I don't like Kim So hyun, I don't like silly rom-coms. But...
Jang Dong-yoon is dang cute as a girl. It might outweigh my dislikes.
So I at least have to try.

she takes warming up to (for me personally. also i'm the same) she's grown up a lot and chosen some cool projects, so i'm excited. romcoms are just exhausting but hopefully ones that aren't painfully dumb and plotless will be fun. cos he is real cute as a girl

I liked her as a child actor.

She's great and extremely talented but transitioning to adult roles isn't easy. She still picks better projects than most people.

Are you seriously saying you didn't like her in School 2015, Page Turner and Bring it On Ghost? All of those are her adult roles not child actor roles! She's an absolute natural at acting not to mention her flawless gravitas in Love Alarm!

I only saw her in Bring It On Ghost and remember there were complaints she was still too young for a kiss.

1

None of the kisses in Bring it on Ghost were real they were just camera angles. How can she be too young for kisses when she has her 1st kiss at 12 with Jin Gu? You should try watching Page Turner and School 2015 neither of them had kiss scenes.

0

it's reasonable that there are complaints about that. she just turned 20, it was filmed three years ago making her 17 and her co-actor 10 years older than her. it makes no sense. i certainly wouldn't allow that for my production (though it is done.) so yea..it's not her fault it's patriarchy tho so

@Linda
No, no real fan of Jang Hyuk would fan shame you. It's ok not to like him. Nothing wrong with that.

I get the feeling from this writer's last sageuk that she tends to be in love with her male characters and neglected her female lead character.
I hope she'll be fair to both.

I probably would be okay with JH being the bad guy - as long as he doesn't overact over the other actors.

I'm drawn to actors who I feel their passion and love for acting however they express it.
Jang Hyuk is one of those.

(I'm having trouble translating my thoughts into English so I hope you'll understand what I'm saying :) ).

I am confused. Wasn't Jang Hyuk in My Country and not this?

3

@moonbean Smacks self on forehead. I guess I am the one confused! I must have been getting My Country and Dokdu mixed up.
Must go back and re-read synopses of both dramas. Oops...

1

@moonbean I was confused as hell with this Jang Hyuk discussion. I kept looking at pictures to see if he is in this drama too!!
Problems of too many dramas premiering :))

2

As a fan of KSH I don't have a problem wether or not anyone likes her. Everyone is entitled their preferences. It would still be great if you joined us all to watch this drama it might surprise you in a good way.

Jang Dong-yoon can rock both looks and still look good. Can't believe the day has come where we get a 16-episode drama about a guy cross-dressing as a woman (and a widow on top of that). One word: pretty

I was thinking they'd be mistaken identity hijinks as well but from one of the teasers it looked like she'll find out early on that she is a he. They better give tons of co-habitation hijinks instead.

1

well it's not exactly like being a gisaeng is a pro-active or autonomous choice so i always love rebels. hopefully it's fun and cute and not offensive and poorly written. also he is super gorgeous in drag (i try not to talk abut looks and get to know the actor/character cos u no but like he should do theater)

Interesting that two sagueks will be competing against each other. I wonder if this will do better in the ratings than Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency. The premise of this show is definitely more intriguing...

I'd be surprised if it doesn't do better. For one it is airing in one of the big three networks. Ratings that would be a success for JTBC (e.g. 3%) would be a failure for KBS. But it also has the better known and well liked actress and a more interesting premise. With no competing shows on MBC and SBS it could really do well in its premiere week. Its only competition is in cable.

The public channel ratings are so poor these days I have no hope. Don't see this doing better but for a change maybe I'll watch a drama without caring about ratings. It's so depressing when most of the dramas I end up watching don't get ratings.

This drama must be uncomfortable for many people in Korea. While apparently they don't have problems with women pretending to be men (i.e. you are beautiful), many will complain with a man pretending to be a woman 🤔

I wonder whether they will complain as much when it's obviously played for comedy and he is not effeminate in any way (hey, maybe that's why they included those initial manly scenes!)

I'm curious too, but it will be hard to find out if one don't know Korean as blogs who translated comments on dramas are dying out because of copyright issues.

I am so excited for this! I haven't been this excited for a drama in a long long time. I hope it is as good as it looks so far and delivers what it promises...

The only thing that bothers me is Kim So-hyun's very obvious extensions. Are all dramas getting sloppier in this regard? Kim So Yeon also sported something very similar in Mother of Mine recently.

Yes they look bad, but I think 1. It goes in line with the theme that she's not cut out to be a prettified gisaeng, and 2. From the trailers she cuts off her hair herself to her cute little bob, so I think we'll only need to see the shag for one episode. (So maybe they also tried to save money there and used Jang Man Wol's rejects lol)

I think the shaggy look only lasts for one episode because I see the Bob cut in most of the screenshots. I prefer the cute Bob

The short hair with bangs are the trademark for the character. It's exactly the same in the webtoon so it has to be there in the live action version otherwise it'll make no sense.

Its no secret how not low key I'm excited for this drama. Kim so-hyun is a dream to watch on screen but I'm excited to see Jang dong-yun cross dressing. He embodies both femininity and masculinity in the promotional material and I can't wait to actually see it. Hopefully the writing won't fail the actors because they have a really good cast.

Kim So Hyun is literally glowing in the poster. I'm so happy for her she found a project that makes her smile like that! She's suffered so much it's only right for her to have good projects now. I'll be cheering for you! Good luck! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

@Nozomi ???? Kim So Hyun has "suffered so much" --?? what are you referring to? I wasn't aware of her having such suffering. To my eyes she has been terrific in her roles and even though some of the dramas were not as popular as they might have been, they were good learning experiences for such a young woman. I've never read any reports of her being ill or having legal or financial troubles. She's always seemed like a happy person to me. Did I miss something in the news about Kim So Hyun?

I don't know if you remember but in 2017 she said she was going through a slump and was extremely unhappy. She said it again recently that in that time period she felt depressed, lost and confused. She was in a bad place emotionally at that time because of the drama and struggles to transition. She overcame it eventually but it affected her deeply. She's a strong girl. 😊

No, I have never heard a single thing about Kim So Hyun being extremely unhappy at all. Quite the opposite. Are you sure you don't have her confused with a similar child actress Kim Yoo Jung (was in Moon that Embraced the Sun) who did have major problems a few years ago. Kim Yoo Jung was even hospitalized.

No she only had some health issues but Sohyun was the one who was extremely unhappy and depressed. All the fans know it you must have missed all the outcry post Ruler in 2017. She said it affected her deeply and its on her wiki page as well if you're confused. She put up with a lot of difficulties and lost her identity as an actress as well. She suffered a lot and has always had a hard time but now she can finally be happy. If you read all her interviews on Soompi, Han Cinema and all the fan translated ones on Twitter you'll find out how much the poor girl has suffered. Her strong will and desire to be an actress is the only reason she has managed to cope with it. Her real smile has come back after a long time.
