Busy month.
Clumsy mistakes in kitchen resulting in food wastage. It hurts.

Biggest entertainment - results - yup. today's election results.
2019 is such a nice year of election results. These results have revealed the value of face masks these societies wear. Shinny, facepainted but insides are rotten and clearly reflected in these referendums

Happy Friday, Beanies!
Has anybody of you heard of Maladaptive Daydreaming? I came across this term by chance and I’m shook. Is it real?

What are the symptoms of maladaptive daydreaming?

A person who is purported to have maladaptive daydreaming may have one or more symptoms of the disorder, but not necessarily all of them. Common symptoms include:

extremely vivid daydreams with their own characters, settings, plots, and other detailed, story-like features
daydreams triggered by real-life events
difficulty completing everyday tasks
difficulty sleeping at night
an overwhelming desire to continue daydreaming
performing repetitive movements while daydreaming
making facial expressions while daydreaming
whispering and talking while daydreaming
daydreaming for lengthy periods (many minutes to hours)
Experts still aren’t sure what causes maladaptive daydreaming.

Is obsessing over k-dramas considered as MD? 😭

Another answer to what is maladaptive daydreaming.

What is MD, exactly?

An addiction to fantasy. It can come in many forms. Some people daydream about celebrities, whereas others, like me, will base their fantasies almost exclusively on characters they create. They may be more visual, auditory, emotional, sensual, intellectual. They can create extensive fantasy worlds or individual daydreams. Some people have many worlds. Some have varying story lines. I think there’s a spectrum of seriousness among those with the addiction. The one thing that seems to unify us all is the skill it takes to try and live in two worlds at the same time.

When daydreaming was such a part of your life, could you control it at all? How often would you daydream?

If I could control it, then it wouldn’t be maladaptive, would it? I really think it is an addiction. So if we could choose, like an alcoholic could choose, Okay, I’m just going to have one glass of wine today, then they wouldn’t be an alcoholic, now would they? Asking me how often I daydreamed is kind of like asking me how many times I breathed in today. I recently read something that said people daydream 2,000 times a day. That’s normal people. So imagine us? Any chance I had, I’d go and lie down or I’d just get sucked into it, and it was so hard to turn off. It’s like you’ve always got a tailor-made fantasy, soap opera, action film, whatever you want, playing in your head all the time. An alcoholic can run out of booze and money, but you don’t run out of mind. You can’t just tell yourself to stop thinking.

Your timing couldn't have been more perfect. Just a few days before obsession with kdramas, it's characters, stories is exactly what I searched for online. And I am pretty sure I came across this. I have had conversations with characters, had dreams related to them, spoken out loud in my sleep, hell even found myself discussing about it while half asleep. I am definitely weird like that. Just a few weeks ago I had a dream in which some characters from what I watched just before sleeping, had something bad happen to them (in my dream). I started sobbing and my mother and father, as I woke up, came in the room worried and asked me why and I couldn't tell them. I just said it was nothing and that I couldn't remember. Funnier thing but such a coincidence, just a few days before that incident, the fan was on and my mother who sleeps in the same room (and so does my brother who needs the fan on at night) thought I might get cold, so she decided she needed to cover me better with the blanket, I suddenly woke up and saw her and since lights were off I couldn't register her face, I thought she might be a ghost (don't ask) so I screamed my head off. And then she wondered why. Now she is extra worried about me at night and I also happen to have sleep problems.

😭😭 This is a personal attack lol. I'm going with beantown and calling it a creative mind. But I don't know calling it a disorder, makes it a disease that I don't want to have. Is there someone who doesn't have it? I really want to know that there are people who don't daydream this much as stated in the symptoms because all this while I have felt we all do.

Required fields are marked *

But it's nice to know I'm not the only one. Besides, what is fantasy, what is reality?
This year it hasn't been the dreaming (both day and night) about kdramas, but C-dramas. The last 3-4 years it was kdramas.

I know we all daydream to an extent, but with me it’s ... complicated. Does your daydreaming interfere with your daily life? Your work? There’s a line between “hobby” and the need to constantly busy your mind. Or when you prefer talking to “internet” people than people in your real life.

It’s like my mind needs new impulses, new obsessions all the time. Truth to be told - I feel my life is dull when there’s nothing to obsess about. When there’s a period when I’m not obsessing over anything, I feel dull and empty and I’m instinctively searching for something to attach myself to.

When I was opening my restaurant I was obsessed with it - I didn’t need any other impulses. Now that my restaurant is settled and I don’t need to be there all the time and I frankly don’t have to worry about it anymore, it’s like I suddenly need something different to stay occupied.

Are there any psychologists Beanies? Do I need help?

It's one obsession after another - it's been that way my whole life.
Is it obsession or addiction? And why are some people allowed to call obsession "passion"?

Required fields are marked *

I completely understand you. I’ve been like this as long as I remember. I always needed something to occupy my mind since I hated sports or other physical activities. Firstly it was books. I literally read 5 books a week when I was 12. I’m still like this - be it books, fantasy and sci-fi series, crime series, k-dramas, you name it. Anything that has to do with making up stories in my mind - I’ve surely obsessed about it.

7

@cherryinbloom Yes it does interfere. I can't think much other than my obsessions. My mind is always busy thinking about things. Even when I am supposed to do something else my mind is on that obsession. I think I have OCD. Also I am shy in real life and don't say much or share things with people but here on Dramabeans I can easily do that. I have said things here that I would only say to one another person and that's my sister. Even then somethings she doesn't know I have said here and somethings I haven't said that she knows about but I want to share here. Is that weird? For example right now I am trying to sleep but since a lot of thoughts are going through my head I am on my phone and checking it again and again as a way to distract myself.

It’s funny how we can say things here easily while we would never say them to people in real life, right?

I think you have the same restless mind like me. I don’t understand people who say they don’t think about anything at all. How do people do it? How do they clear their minds in order not to think about anything at all??? My mind never goes silent.

The curious thing is I’m not shy at all. I can be talkative and likeable IF I want to. The problem is I don’t want to. I don’t want to talk to new people. I barely chat with people I already know.

3

I totally relate with you. My day dreaming interferes with my career choices. And in all honesty, I have not been able to make it fruitful for me in any way. This makes me think that I acted on a wrong impulse or maybe a disorder. I'm aspiring to be a writer but I'm no way close or might switch professions but the day dreaming works to generate new ideas for me but I think it takes me further away from actually putting it to use. I don't get most of my work done when I start day dreaming from when I open my eyes to the minute I sleep.

4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Not a psychologist, but as a fellow obsessive, I'd say that it sounds like you have a restless mind... Some people are content with their routine, some others need challenges or obsessions (new businesses, sports goals, learning languages, music instruments, hobbies, whatever) to feel that life is fulfilling. Could that be your case? As long as it doesn't interfere with real life family life, work and social interactions, I guess it's ok to obsess... Always found that people interested in stuff, even when I'm not into that specific theme, are the most interesting!

6

Required fields are marked *

But it does interfere with "real life". So what. Obsessions is how I learn new things. My mom always said I only liked things new and different. I'd be obsessed until I learned all about the subject and then it got boring. (Now I'm really good at Trivial Pursuit).
I use obsessions to teach kids, i.e. when they're obsessed with something, that's what I use to interest them in learning to play piano. I once had a kid obsessed with Les Miserables. Every week she'd show me parts of it on her tv, then we'd learn the advanced piece on the piano. It's how she learned.
Her brother was obsessed with Nightmare Before Xmas. That's how he became an advanced pianist.
My daughter was obsessed with Zelda so I bought her the expensive cheat book. That's how she learned to read.
I had a student obsessed with film. He's now a Hollywood Director who's directed several quite famous tv shows.
I'm obsessed with Asian dramas. So now I'm learning Korean and Chinese, studying the culture, language, history.
None of my "real" friends are remotely interested in what I like, but thank goodness for sites like DramaBeans where we can share our obsession with like kind all around the globe.

10

Obsession is a great fuel! For me, what works best is obsessing but within measure, for instance, if I'm not working I schedule other stuff - sports, languages, etc- in order to prevent myself from indulging too much to binge watching... Especially because I need to move, if I stay the whole day indoors I get restless and anxious

4

Required fields are marked *

@cherryinbloom Same. I don't have friends. Even when I was in school I didn't have friends. So I turned to books. I read a lot. Stories and characters, etc are really important to me. I can't live without stories. But I have stopped reading books. It's now just kdramas. Also I too hate sports and physical activities.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

@cherryinbloom I tried you know, to understand. To stop my mind from thinking too much and that used to bug me but now I just except it. And it feels much better now and doesn't bother me as much as it used to anymore. Though there are times when it does bother me.

I am one of those people whose mind is blank all the time, Cherry. Unfortunately, I don't know how and can't teach you. I am just born with it. There were time when I am obsessed with a certain drama/things that I would even dream about them. But usually, that passed by and I am back to my usual self.

I am no psychologist and I can't give you advice on that front, but from what I see, having an active mind is not necessarily a bad thing. You just need to find one thing that can occupy your mind and keep you motivated. 🙂

I'm gonna have do more research on this, but this feels very...accurate? in terms of describing how important daydreaming is to my life. I wouldn't say it causes me distress though. I love daydreaming. I just recognize that I do it too much and in ways that are probably not always healthy. Definitely gonna have to spend time reading up on this.

Happy Friday, everyone! After being rained on for 2 days, it finally turned sunny and hot on the day I had to go to the airport to move on to my next destination. And guess what?! In my next destination, I got rained on too. I guess those "coincidences" and bad luck in kdramas are not a myth. C'est la vie. 🙂😎

Wishing you a better day than mine.

But the important question regarding those rainy locations you've encountered ..... has an oppa with a yellow umbrella appeared? Because in kdramas, it's always a yellow umbrella!

What do you think? No oppa, of course. If he appeared, I would not feel it's a bad luck. And again, I am not the main character sort of girl. So the chances of running into an oppa with yellow umbrella or a soaking wet oppa who removes his shirt are nada. Nill. Zero. 🙁😭

I sort of watched Hot-blooded Youth, but just to pass time. Waiting for the ending to be subbed.
And there's always favorite scenes of Untamed...

Hi Everyone! ..... I hope you are all doing well today! Back on the OT after an absence for a couple of weeks.

I've been more busy than usual as I've had a bit of a health scare with my mom. She suddenly couldn't move after waking up one morning! You can just imagine that a zillion thoughts race through your head of what could possibly be wrong. She can't sleep, she can't sit and she can't walk more than a couple of steps. All this plus severe pain in her back and leg. We think it's super severe case of sciatica caused by who knows what. I raced over to her orthopedic doctor's office to make an appointment only to find out the office is gone. Alarmed, I did some research only to find out that the doctor has passed away!! We're just devastated by the news as he was an excellent doctor. I've been trying to help but it's so terrible to see her in so much pain.

To make things worse, she had a dental issue pop up last week. I tracked down her doctor, who had moved to another city, and made an appointment. However, since the dental appointment, she can now barely open her jaw and has severe neck, throat and head pain. Apparently, being in the dentist's chair with her mouth wide open for hours is the cause of that. As a result of taking care of so many things with her, I've fallen behind on every single drama I've been watching. I'm trying my best to catch up!

Secret Boutique - Finally finished this one and I'm going to miss Jenny Jang. I liked many things about this one, especially getting introduced to actor Kim Jae-young.

Melting Me Softly - I believe I had 4 more episodes left to watch, however, this may be the one I just won't be getting back to any time soon.

Pegasus Market - So I was right about Manager Moon's mom!!

Vagabond - It was an action-packed little adventure, where people didn't realize they were shot until, like, 4 hours later. Who knows what other eye-roll-inducing action they come up with next time.

VIP - I've decided that the letters of the drama title stand for Very Intense Pretending. Apparently this is what several of the characters are doing.

That's all for now. Everyone take care and have a great Friday!

I’m looking forward to Crash Landing On You and Stove League this weekend to fill my empty schedule. Having no dramas to watch is a terrible thing.

High 5 toki! I plan to watch Stove League and Crash Landing too 😆. I hope I actually watch it. I'm finding it hard to commit to watch ongoing dramas now. Huhu

There has been so much promotion the past two weeks for CLOY (including extended trailers) that the show could very well start off as a rom-com based on SYJ's character.

Also looking forward to Stove League.

Hot Stove League. The title is weird, unless they mean that the baseball team is in a bad spot or hot stove?

Oh wait, I looked it up and apparently "hot stove league" is baseball lingo for "off season". Lol. I just revealed I know nothing about baseball.

It's a weird expression. I don't know anything about baseball either, except that it is BIG in Korea. But I read the meaning of this expression in the comments when the show was first announced.

Hi beanies! I'm watching Jugglers finally (for me) and I'm enjoy in it so much, I loved the comedy and I really like the leads and their relationships I think I really like all the characters :-D like a year ago I saw the first episode and I couldn't connect with it, so I'm glad I gave it another chance and I want to know if something like this happened to any of you. Sorry for my english.

It was a fun drama to watch or maybe it’s better to say it was fun to see Choi Daniel in turtleneck for 16 episodes!
I wish I had such an experience because every time I give a second chance to a dropped drama it makes me drop it again😭😂

Dad has been suffering severe pain in his lower back all week, and it brought pandemonium in the household. My mom suffers from many chronic illnesses and a visual handicap, so she needs dad’s assistance whenever she leaves the house. My eyesight is also pretty bad, so dad is the only one with a driver’s license and we are very dependent on him. Picking up my goddaughter at school and doing groceries were quite challenging as a result. Dad has a lot of pain walking around, but fortunately he can still drive. This week he would basically drive me and mom to the entrance of the store or school and I helped my mom as well as I could with finding our groceries or my goddaughter and then carrying everything to the car, because mom cannot lift anything. I have zero arm muscles, so I had my share of exercising this week! ;) I also got up at a decent time and got plenty of fresh air, so I got something out of it as well. The greatest gift, however, was my parent’s gratitude. I am far from ready to run my own household or become a parent, but at least I have been helpful to them this week.

It is a stark contrast with my other family members. Last weekend I found out that I am kicked out of the Christmas gathering this year. Grandfather suffered a thrombosis three years ago and is no longer able to tolerate big crowds like he used to. This would be more understandable if he did not insist on attending every social event on earth to save face, but I guess he knows he does not need to care about that with family. Anyway, aunt tried again to avoid her turn to host and cook for everyone with the excuse that she has no room for 27 people. Except that nobody in the family does, but everybody else bothered to make it work up until now. To make things easier for herself, she has convinced my grandparents, aunts and uncles to send the (great)grandchildren home after the appetizer, since none of them actually attend from beginning to end. The unfair part is that, while their children indeed only show up for the money or do not bother dropping by at all, my sister and I have been refusing other offers our whole lives to be able to make it every year out of respect. My parents called them out on it to defend us, but to no avail. So by the time they are seated around the table I have to go home and amuse and feed myself. Binge-watching and snacks it is then. ;)

Sounds stressful !
Sometimes, staying away, and watching dramas with your favorite drink/snack isn't a bad idea at all.
But I hope your dad will feel better soon !

I certainly do not look down on it, since I know its power as an introvert. :) However, I strongy believe that no one should be alone on those days, except when they choose to be, which was not the case for me and why I am a bit sad. :)

Never underestimate extended families' ability to disappoint and let others down. Sorry to hear about the holiday gathering situation.

Hi Beanies! Hope you're starting a cozy/fun/adventurous (choose your option) weekend! Because I've just realized how little time we have left before next year, I'm looking back and realizing that this has been the toughest year in my life. I've spent most of it getting treated for a major health crisis -I'm fine now!-, but all that crap made me a lot more aware of what's important for me! I'm grabbing happiness wherever I can find it, and that obviously means I'm aware of how precious time with my loved ones is, but it also means that I long for prettiness and fuzzy feelings. And those are what I've found in Dramaland! I'm so happy to have found kdrama, it's been therapeutical for me! a I'm also extra happy for having found DB, where I've found Beanies that share my love for dramas and where the atmosphere is so cozy and welcoming! Gamsahamnida to all of you!

Good morning from a Miami! We’re here to depart on a S.Caribbean cruise tomorrow! I’ve saved when the camellia blooms on my Netflix app, so will be binge watching that on the cruise.

Also going to finish Secret Boutique. Kim Sun Ah is gorgeous and rocking the role!

Anyone watching Cdrama Joy of Life? If so, how is it?

Hello Beanies! It's been a while since I've written in Open Thread.

For my master's thesis, I have to translate parts of a novel that has not been translated yet. We need to ask the original publishing company or the author directly for their authorization to translate even if it's an academic work. After numerous shots at contacting the author and the publisher by mails and phone calls, the publisher finally told me they need to think about it and ask for the author's authorization. Things seemed quite messy since the person in charge is currently sick and won't be back after Christmas holidays. Sooo I am quite stressed because if they refuse, I will have to find an other book and go through the same process.

Since I am stuck in this situation I can't work on my thesis so I am looking for an internship. Either in a German speaking country or in France but I feel a bit overwhelmed because I don't know where to begin. Publishing companies, especially the ones specialized in crime/mystery/thriller novels are my main target and if it doesn't work out, I will go for companies who have ties with environment. Translation agencies would be my last chance just to have a look but that's not the type of environment I aim to work in. Well, studies and future career have been quite worrisome lately. I'm counting on dramas and the holidays to cheer me up.

I'm unusually feeling the Christmas spirit this year because I am preparing Christmas cards to family and friends for the first time in ten years. Craft work is not my strength so it's a bit difficult for me to make decent cards. At least it will stop me from thinking of my studies.

Happy Friday :)
