Hospital Playlist: Episode 5

These five friends promise their patients to do their best, which means working long nights and rushing back to the hospital at odd hours. Despite dealing with life or death situations on a daily basis, doctors and nurses are people just like us. They experience love, heartache, fear, and joy because at the end of the day, even heroes are humans.

EPISODE 5 RECAP

In the emergency room, Jung-won checks a young patient and curses under his breath. He orders Gyu-wool to call the police, suspecting the patient’s father for child abuse, but the father overhears their conversation and runs. Slipping off her shoes, Gyu-wool chases after him.

While Jung-won checks the other twin’s x-rays to prove his hunch, Gyu-wool weaves through the crowded hospital and finds the perfect moment to tackle the father. She successfully brings him down, but he kicks her away and breaks free. Just as he makes his escape, a water jug comes flying towards him. Song-hwa to the rescue!

The police question the father about abusing his children, but he denies the allegations. He challenges the doctors’ assumptions, but Jung-won presents even more evidence of abuse, revealing the other twin’s previous fractures. With that, the police take him away, but the father turns back and sneers at Jung-won, vowing to seek revenge.

Gyu-wool waits expectantly for Jung-won to praise her, but he turns to Joon-hee and compliments her on the x-rays. As for Gyu-wool, Jung-won tells her to get the operating room ready, and she visibly deflates.

Dropping by Jung-won and Joon-wan’s office, Ik-joon rummages through Joon-wan’s sweets drawer as he updates Jung-won about Politician Shim. The politician tried to trick the hospital by switching donors, and both friends scoff at the politician’s audacity.

Ik-joon wonders where Joon-wan is (while munching on his stolen chocolates), and Jung-won tells him that he went out today. They assume that he has another girl, though they doubt the relationship will last longer than three months.

Checking his phone, Jung-won gasps and shows Ik-joon the news about the fake donor working for Seok-hyung’s father. Meanwhile, Seok-hyung leaves the surgery room, and in the hall, he reads about the scandal with a grim expression.

That evening, all five friends meet at a restaurant, and Song-hwa asks about Joon-wan’s home renovations. During the construction period, Joon-wan and Jung-won (who’s freeloading off his friend) are staying at Ik-joon’s place.

Seok-hyung drowns himself in cola instead of alcohol since he’s on call, and points out that his family is like the bean powder (which is a phrase in Korean meaning a messed-up family). Ik-joon doesn’t deny it, and the friends take turns badmouthing Seok-hyung’s father. When it’s Jung-won’s turn, he tells the group that back in college, Seok-hyung’s father asked him to buy a pack of cigarettes without giving him money. (“And he still hasn’t paid me back.”) Hahahaha!

They ask Seok-hyung how his mom is taking the news, and he says that she doesn’t seem to care. Ik-joon says that she should get a divorce like him, and Song-hwa marvels at how they’ve grown so much, being able to discuss such topics with ease.

Ik-joon defends his actions, turning to Seok-hyung for support, but Seok-hyung tells him that divorce is a sin. He admits to feeling guilty towards his ex-wife since she suffered a lot because of him and his family. Without missing a beat, Joon-wan looks at Ik-joon and tells him, “You did good, getting that divorce.” Heh.

Song-hwa tells the others to hurry since they have a lot to do tonight, and after dinner, the friends gather at Seok-hyung’s house for band practice. They play “Deep Night” by Crying Nut, but in the middle of the song, both Seok-hyung and Ik-joon gets calls from their residents. The song lyrics perfectly reflect the remaining trio’s feelings as they sing, “Don’t leave me behind.”

At the hospital, Ik-joon’s patient refuses to accept his daughter’s liver, so Ik-joon promises to make sure his daughter’s surgery will be painless. At the same time, Seok-hyung runs to the treatment room at full speed and is met with a handful of confetti. His department wanted to give him a surprise birthday party, but from his look, it seems their surprise cut a few years off his lifespan.

Also celebrating Seok-hyung’s birthday are the abandoned three friends (it’s so sad but funny), and Seok-hyung’s mom brings them some snacks. She asks Song-hwa if she wants to stay over since it’s late (“Seok-hyung’s room is clean”), and her friends silently mouthed at her to sleepover. Pwahaha!

In contrast with Politician Shim, the liver transplant patient and his wife show much more concern for their daughter (the donor), and unlike the politician’s son, their daughter seems more than willing to donate. When the day arrives, the father cries before entering the operating room, feeling guilty for taking his daughter’s liver.

Meeting with a patient and her doting husband, Seok-hyung tells them that the mother is doing well so they shouldn’t worry. Fond of Seok-hyung and his manners, the wife offers to introduce him to someone if he’s single, and Seok-hyung fumbles for his words before politely turning her down. The husband also has a question and asks if he can sing during the birth, which leaves Seok-hyung at a loss for words.

During surgery, Joon-wan hears from Jae-hak and the others about the new doctor in their department, Dr. Chun. He’s famous for being scary to his patients, and the scene cuts to Dr. Chun living up to his reputation. He dismisses his patient’s questions and ends the meeting within minutes.

Song-hwa meets with her residents, and after Chi-hong goes over a case, she asks them about lunch. Seok-min tells her that Jae-hak is buying them food, but Chi-hong wants lunch with Song-hwa instead (which catches Seon-bin’s eye). Song-hwa agrees to treat him, and though the other residents now change their minds, Song-hwa tells them that they’ve missed their chance.

Ik-joon finishes his portion of the liver transplant successfully, but hearing a commotion from the other room, he pops in to help the fellow in charge of removing the father’s liver. Once things are settled, Ik-joon tells the fellow that Dr. Kwon (a skilled doctor at their hospital) didn’t even get to see a liver during his first solo surgery and lets the younger doctor know that it’s okay to struggle as long as they improve.

Jae-hak drops by the bank, and the teller congratulates him on saving over 100 million won (roughly $82,000). He tells his wife the good news as he goes back to the hospital to treat the others… to street food. Seok-min and Seon-bin sigh at their lunch, and Jae-hak promises to buy them meat next time.

They ask him what he’s doing with his savings, and Jae-hak tells them that they’re leasing a house tomorrow. Seok-min warns him about the recent real estate scams, but Jae-hak ignores his advice. Seon-bin thinks that he should have kept a little for a vacation over the weekend, but the chief residents ask what a “vacation” and “weekend” are.

Jung-won visits his mom who prepares an assortment of vegetables from her garden for lunch. He badgers her to eat a more balanced diet, but Rosa says that she gets all her nutrients and motions towards her box of vitamins.

While they eat, Jung-won mentions his intentions to become a priest, but Rosa gets up from the table to get some sauce. Jung-won tries again, but this time, Rosa shoves food in his mouth to silence him. She tells him not to join because she would be too lonely, and Jung-won drops the topic as he fans his hot mom with some leaves.

Jong-soo and his cousin (the hospital director) drop by Rosa’s house and are tasked with removing the poop from the anchovies. Not following her orders, Jong-soo removes the heads entirely, giggling with the director about their trick, but Rosa catches them red-handed. Jong-soo raises his hand in repentance while the director shifts all the blame onto his cousin. These two are such a riot!

The third guest is Seok-hyung’s mom who came dressed to the nines. Jung-won asks if she wants coffee, but when she asks him why he isn’t married, he twirls around and returns to the kitchen. Rosa comments on her uncomfortable outfit, but Seok-hyung’s mom says that she is dressed comfortably. Rosa’s and the director’s expressions are priceless.

As they eat noodles, Jong-soo asks about mafia game since his grandson wants to play it with him. Jung-won tells him that they can play it today, and Seok-hyung’s mom says that it sounds fun since The Godfather is also fun. She’s hilarious.

Jung-won explains the rules to the group, and the others seem eager to play. Rosa suggests having a prize for the winner, so Jung-won pulls out recital tickets he got from Jong-soo. This prompts another round of questions directed at Jung-won’s love life, so he tells them that he’s in love with the Lord, which earns him a smack from Rosa.

Before they start playing, Jung-won tells them that he’ll choose the mafia at “night” and then the game begins when it’s “morning.” The adults interpret the instructions literally, and Jong-soo makes sure that everyone is free this afternoon. Jung-won’s look of disbelief just makes everything funnier.

Jung-won starts their first round, but when he chooses Rosa as mafia, she announces her identity to the whole group before the game even begins. After these initial hiccups, the group finally plays a real round of mafia, and everyone is busy trying to prove their innocence.

The director questions Jong-soo who says that he isn’t mafia but then changes tactics and claims to be mafia. Rosa wonders how he runs the hospital, and Jong-soo says that the hospital has been doing better since he took charge. He even comments on the free publicity they’ve been getting because of someone’s husband. The shade!

Most of the suspicions land on Rosa, and when it comes time to vote, even Jong-soo is in favor of killing her. Unfortunately, mafia wins, and Jung-won reveals Jong-soo’s true identity as mafia. Rosa smacks his drink in his face and accuses him for always being a weasel since their schooldays. She then wipes his wet clothes, but still mad at him for tricking her, she puts him in a headlock while cleaning his face. Hahaha!

After a day of fun, Seok-hyung’s mom talks with her son over the phone, and to his surprise, she enjoyed her time at Rosa’s house and wants to come next week as well. She tells him that she hasn’t laughed this much since turning old. She thanks Seok-hyung and asks him to pass on her gratitude to Jung-won as well.

Gyu-wool eats with Min-ha and Nurse Han, and they talk about Min-ha’s failed date last weekend. She tells them that she broke up with him because he turned out to be a materialistic jerk, and Nurse Han mentions Min-ha’s wish to have her first kiss on Christmas.

Gyu-wool is surprised that Min-ha hasn’t had her first kiss, either, but Min-ha calls her crazy—she meant her first kiss of the year. She tells the others that she’s planning to confess, but before she shares who her new crush is, she and Nurse Han are called away since the affectionate couple is here to give birth.

Meanwhile, Joon-wan runs to the ER and sighs over a patient who should have come in much sooner. Jae-hak tells him that the patient and his father are living paycheck to paycheck, so they might be worried about the cost. Joon-wan points out the patient’s condition and says that money isn’t the problem right now.

In her office, Song-hwa finds flowers on her desk and looks concerned by their presence. Back in the delivery room, the wife gives birth to a healthy child, and the husband sings a song to commemorate the moment. When he turns to serenade her, the wife whispers to Seok-hyung to stop him, but he just chuckles at the loving couple.

Ik-joon’s liver transplant patient opens his eyes, and the first thing he does is ask how his daughter feels. She tells her father that she’s fine, but he knows that it probably hurt and apologizes. The family cries, and in the corner, Ik-joon turns around to hide his tears behind his face mask. I can’t tell if I’m crying or laughing anymore.

Joon-wan prepares for surgery and goes outside to inform the father who has just arrived. Joon-wan tells him that his son will need a prosthetic valve, and the father grabs his arm, begging him to use the most expensive one they have. Joon-wan grabs the father’s hand and promises to use the best valve in the world.

In her office, Song-hwa suddenly stops working and grabs her chest, looking pained, but pretends nothing happened when her door opens. Ik-joon tells her to go home and then turns off her office lights as he leaves.

Chi-hong drops by next with a cup of coffee and asks if he can stay for a while. Song-hwa tells him to sit and gets right to the point: does he like her? Her bluntness catches him off guard, but Chi-hong admits that he has feelings for her.

He apologizes and tries to explain his sincerity, but Song-hwa cuts him off. She tells him to stop liking her, but Chi-hong says that this isn’t something that he can just stop. After stewing in awkward silence, Chi-hong excuses himself and leaves.

Joon-wan drives Ik-joon who tells him that his sister is staying over for the night. However, a call from Gyu-wool sends Ik-joon back to the hospital, so Joon-wan arrives at Ik-joon’s apartment by himself. Seeing Ik-soon in the kitchen, Joon-wan sneaks up behind her to scare her, but Ik-soon feels his presence and roundhouse kicks him in the face. Joon-wan falls to the floor looking terrified.

As Ik-joon leaves the hospital, he invites Gyu-wool over to his place since Jung-won is staying for a while, but he can’t do today since his sister is here. Gyu-wool asks if his sister is good at martial arts, and Ik-joon brags about her fifteen degrees and specialty kicks.

Having experienced Ik-soon’s fighting skills firsthand, Joon-wan now has a swollen face and a pair of broken glasses. He calls her kicks deadly, and she explains that she thought he was a burglar. (Joon-wan: “What kind of burglar enters using the passcode?” Ik-soon: “A new type of burglar?”)

Ik-joon laughs as he eats his noodles, and Ik-soon “helps” Joon-wan apply medicine by holding up a mirror for him, though she keeps bringing it down as a joke. She suddenly asks her brother if he ever met a celebrity before, since an actress asked about him at her friend’s wedding.

Joon-wan shows her a photo of Go Ara, and Ik-soon says that it’s her. Ik-joon admits that he once dated the actress, but they broke up because they lived in such different worlds. Ik-soon squeals at the new information, expressing her doubts, and Ik-joon complains about her always questioning him: “You wouldn’t even believe me if I said mom and dad are a couple.” Pffft.

Ik-soon wonders where she’s sleeping tonight, and Ik-joon tells her to use Joon-wan’s room. She gasps, “together?” and her brother scolds her for talking nonsense. Joon-wan is sleeping on the sofa today, and Ik-soon looks at him sympathetically. Joon-wan calls her out for being fake, and Ik-soon laughs since she was caught.

Early the next morning, a ringing phone wakes Joon-wan who groggily answers it. Ik-soon forgot her phone and asks Joon-wan to mail it to her base, but he offers to bring it to her, instead. He finds her outside the station eating toast, and when he hands over her phone, she gives him a present: another fake bird.

Ik-soon does have a real gift for him, though, and takes out some chocolates. She pours some of the candy into his hand, but tips the bottle too far as a joke. She does it a second time, and Joon-wan laughs at her antics.

She stops playing around and hands him three pieces, but as Joon-wan takes the chocolate, he holds her hand. She stares at him wide-eyed, and Joon-wan asks if he ever told her that he liked her: “Go out with oppa.” Smooth.

Ik-joon visits a new patient in the VIP ward, and the patient marvels at the nice room, telling them that his daughter is paying for everything. Ik-joon asks the nurse who the daughter, and right behind them, she enters. Go Ara waves at Ik-joon, mentioning how it’s been a while, and he smiles back at her.

Seok-hyung answers a call and is dumbfounded by the caller: it’s his father’s mistress. As he goes out to the hospital garden to meet her, Min-ha sees Seok-hyung in the hall and follows behind him. She stops by the café to order two drinks, but when she steps outside to greet him, she notices him with a lady and throws the drinks away.

The mistress asks Seok-hyung to persuade his mom to divorce his father, but Seok-hyung flat out tells her “no.” She informs him of her pregnancy and then has the gall to mention his mother’s illness. She hopes for both parties to act like adults, and believes Seok-hyung will do the right thing since he’s smart. Once she leaves, Seok-hyung sits in a daze and takes a few deep breaths to keep his emotions under control. (Ugh, she can take his trash father and never come back for all I care.)

Song-hwa meets with a doctor, and from the poster on the wall, she seems to be a breast cancer specialist. The doctor expresses worry about the lump on Song-hwa and suggests a biopsy. Song-hwa agrees to stay since it’ll only take twenty minutes, and after getting dressed, she lays in the dark room by herself. Her shoulders shake slightly as she breathes, and she grips her hands tightly together.

COMMENTS

First things first, I really hope Song-hwa will be okay. The final image of her alone in that room, not as a doctor but as a patient, really brought home the message that doctors are humans, too. When they’re sick, they can get scared and look lost in a hospital just like their patients. While any of the five friends being ill would be terrible, it’s especially disheartening to see Song-hwa like this because she almost seemed impregnable and flawless. However, it’s clear that this incident has shaken her up, and if she does have cancer, I hope she can confide in her friends and find comfort with them as well. So far, the friends have taken a hands-off approach when it comes to family and more personal matters, but this time, I hope they can all rally around Song-hwa if she needs them when the time comes. Granted, all this worrying may be for naught, and there could be another time jump in the next episode that brushes past this incident. However, unlike with the previous incidents (Ik-soon’s injury, Joon-wan’s visit to the base, etc.), I hope the show doesn’t skip through the details with this storyline because it seems cruel to tease the audience with a cancer scare and not provide more information. While I understand the need to cut some things from the plot, this isn’t something you casually drop and not develop further.

Besides the last scene with Song-hwa, the show continues depicting doctors and nurses as regular people who just happen to do extraordinary things for their jobs. They have crushes, hang out with friends, and have older family members who don’t know how to play games. A part of me enjoys the residents and the various crushes they have on their respective doctors, but as depicted in this episode, it’s not always a good thing. Though I felt bad for Chi-hong having his hopes crushed, I understood Song-hwa’s reservations and need to firmly set boundaries at work. Likewise, Gyu-wool’s crush is adorable (because she’s adorable), but I want the show to quickly reveal Jung-won’s opinion of her because that colors how I feel about her actions (and Ik-joon’s meddling). All we know so far is that Jung-won wants to become a priest, and unless the show tells us otherwise, they might unintentionally portray Gyu-wool’s crush as inappropriate if she does make a move. Right now, she hasn’t really done anything, so I’m enjoying her obvious (yet not really obvious) crush on Jung-won because it’s cute and funny. As for Min-ha, she’s growing on me, but I’m dubious about her crush on Seok-hyung. Unlike Chi-hong or Gyu-wool, it’s not immediately evident why she likes Seok-hyung, especially when she was talking poorly about him before. If anything, it would make more sense for Eun-won (the other resident) to have a crush, but I guess that would be too similar to the other residents. In fact, maybe the show wants me to think Min-ha likes Seok-hyung, but her crush is someone else entirely (wouldn’t explain the coffee scene, but maybe she just likes wasting food).

This might just be me, but the show reminds me of old Korean sitcoms (a genre that I loved despite its flaws). The episodes feel like vignettes knit together, and though the story has a linear timeline, you don’t necessarily have to watch every single scene to get the general gist of the show. There’s also an eclectic bunch of characters and their various relationships centered around a main setting with a core premise. For the most part, I really like this tone, and the show sometimes has so many jokes jam-packed within a scene that every line is essentially a punchline. My favorite example this episode was the mafia game which was comedy gold. From the ridiculous image of Jung-won fanning his mom to the last scene of Rosa putting Jong-soo in a headlock, that entire sequence was a riot from start to finish. There were so many jokes in there from the hospital director acting like the youngest of the bunch, to Seok-hyung’s mother getting everything wrong while trying to act elegant, to Jong-soo giggling like a child and acting like a little boy around his best friend. However, what makes the show so good is that even these comedic moments are used for character growth, and the show balances the funny with the emotional so well. At the end of the night, Seok-hyung’s mother tells him that she hasn’t enjoyed herself this much in a long while, and I was both happy for her for finally experiencing joy but also sad that no matter how much Seok-hyung changed to help her, it would have never been enough. That isn’t to say that there aren’t some shortcomings with this format (the quick succession from one character to the next), but overall, I think Hospital Playlist makes it work while adding a more modern sensibility to it. In general, I love the way the show layers emotions within scenes, which often means that I’m laughing then crying then laughing again. A great example of this was when the liver transplant patient was meeting with his family after the surgery, and in the corner, Ik-joon covers his eyes with his face mask so people don’t see him cry. It’s a touching scene (that contrasted nicely with Politician Shim), and I loved Ik-joon’s response to it.

Besides the writing and directing, the acting continues to amaze me and really elevates these characters. From the main friends to the supporting cast, everyone is so perfectly cast in their roles. Yoo Yeon-seok is Jung-won, and captures his multifaceted personality into one cohesive portrayal that makes him feel interesting and lovable rather than one-dimensional. Jeon Mi-do fills the screen with her presence, and simply commands attention as Song-hwa, depicting both her strength and compassion (it’s no wonder why Dr. Bong wants to write a biography about her). Jo Jung-seok is killing it in this role with his comedic timing and general exuberance, making full use of the character’s energy and confidence while not coming across as overbearing. Kim Dae-myung is also wonderful as Seok-hyung, and his acting prowess really showed in the garden scene with the mistress. Though Seok-hyung tries to hide his emotions and remain stoic, you can see the subtle flashes of hurt, surprise, and indignation towards this woman who feels no ounce of remorse. Finally, Jung Kyung-ho makes Joon-wan more swoon-worthy than he has any right to be from the way he carries himself and delivers his lines. In one moment, he’s glaring at Jae-hak for making a mistake, but in another, he has hearts pouring out from his eyes as he confesses his love. That last scene between Joon-wan and Ik-soon was absolutely precious, and I already love them together. Also, in case you didn’t know, Joon-wan’s official character description changed and now mentions Ik-soon in it!

I love watching either the five doctors or patients. But Jo Jung Suk is actually the best when it comes to showing emotions and never failed in making suppressed feelings going out of the box, if he needs to. He is so expressive, and maybe that's why Ik Jun is so likable. If I were Song Hwa, I would fall for Ik Jun (too).

I watched all reply series, and I promised myself not going to watch this writer's project again after my trauma from Reply 88. But knowing that Jo Jung Suk was one of the main characters, I decided to watch the Hospital Playlist lol. Although, in the end, I like the overall story too. But I hope the writer doesn't waste his talent when he is acting falling in love or experience jealousy. I don't think there is an exit once I fall for his charm.

It doesn't matter who ends up with Ik Jun, but my heart flutters when I see JJS's expression in the episode 6 trailer. He seems so serious and sad. I started to speculate, but I don't want to raise my hopes, mainly because the trailer can be so tricky. But it seems, for episode 6, Ik Jun will have more screen time.

That's a cameo done right. I was really surprised! (or I just didn't saw a press release about Go Ara).
I'm having Waikiki flashbacks about Iksun and Junwan. I wonder if Ik-joon will be mad with Junwan.

I doubt IkJoon will be mad at Junwan. I noticed from all the Reply series and Prison Playbook....the characters don't really feel mad or express anger to their close friends/family. The most is the character just distances away, but emotions are not really shown. And then viewers debate about their reactions. Hua3

My guess is he is going to be our surprise reveal, and at the very end we find out the massive love he has been hiding all along.
And if we would have noticed the toe of a shoe peeping out from behind a curtain in a 1-second shot of episode 8 we would have figured it all out long ago.

That's correct! My guess as well that JWon's love story will be the big reveal. He indeed was in love in his 20s (ref. character description) but nobody knows it. Even Ik Jun said he never saw JWon with any girls (ref. Ep3) and JWan questioning him on the subject (ref. ep 2). However, I do believe only SHyeong knows who the girl was (ref. ep 4) because he is also JWon's keeper of secret (ref. ep 1). JWon is a man with many secrets and he keeps them well hidden. Hence, it's no easy feat to suppress his feelings and go for priesthood. In contrast of how well he understands all his friends, family, patients, they don't when it comes to him. The friends only know the obvious, what he is showing them, or what they accidentally came across i.e. his emotional roller coaster, the church application (Ref. ep 3) and him being the son of Yulje Group (Ref. ep 1). JWon likes to do his own thing in his own capacity without others knowing, even his best friends of 20 years. But he is willing to hand over or disclose his pet project to SHwa (ref. ep1).

I am looking forward to the big reveal by end of season 3, if ever! hahahaa

I really like the friendship parts but I'm not really invested in the love stories... JWan and and IJ's sister? It's too sudden and I don't understand why, they have nothing in commun. JWon and Dr Jang's crush? I really want JWon to stop at wanting to become a priest and then I could imagine him in a love relationship. I'm not a fan of Dr Jang, what she said to the poor mother, I was OK she's a good doctor but the robot kind, but then she gossips a lot, does weird things like running in all the hospital barefoot...

Poor Seok-Hyeong, they could celebrate his birthday when he was in hospital and not make him running like that, he missed his own party with his friends...

I really hope Song-Hwa won't wait too long before talking to her friends if she has cancer. I'm sure they will be ready to help her.

I would have prefered the flashbacks before his declaration. He's a 40 years old man, so the old crush on the sister doesn't work for me. The actor already had the same story with Prison Playbook :p

He wasn't single. They said he dated a lot but never more than 3 months. In the beginning, he was dating a girl who loved drink a lot. But this story is too sudden. It's like IJ's divorce. They skipped some parts that are important for me.

3

They are actually skipping ahead a lot so from point A to point B is in unknown timeline....For example, Ik Jun's divorce probsbly took atleast 3 to 6 months to finalize...Ik Sun had msjor accident...I would say it took her good 6 or more months to get back to active duty....so I don't like these jumps but what can we do.

1

if you notice, it is one monthperiod per episode. That's why it feels that the drama has move forward fast, a number of issues like the divorce, have settled. 12 ep = 12 months. 3 seasons = 3 years' worth of story. ^^

0

@miracle23 I know, but it doesn't mean they had to skip how the characters deal with their issue. IJ is a genius who never met difficulties in his life, the divorce would have been his first "failure", so I was hoping to see him dealing with that but nothing. His sister is badly hurt but we don't see him reacting about that.

I am also not really seeing this couple. There is a very limited amount of time the show can spend on developing their relationship, and what we get (besides the terse "go out with oppa") is the sort of teasing that would go on between a brother and sister. I mean, sneaking up on someone and getting kicked in the face? When that sort of thing happens in a rom-com, they spend the next 6 episodes showing how the couple gets from that point to where they are ready for a first kiss. This shorthand romance isn't working for me.

The loveline is not working for me either. I feel it's forced in because it's from the writer/director of the Reply series. The difference is...the Reply series had more background to the relationships. More time to develop characters probably because it has lesser characters than Hospital Playlist. HP is bloated mainly because it's in a hospital. There are many patients, many doctors, many nurses, their family members, extended family, exes etc2. It's ep 5 and I'm having trouble remembering their names, some names sound similar 😅. Even the relationship between doctor and patients are not felt because everything is touch and go.

Songhwa being ill might be the arc needed to push the narrative of the show. I just hope it is not resolved in an instant like IkJoon's divorce, Iksoon's accident etc. Since the show isn't going deep with random patient cases, Songhwa being the patient might change that.

And....I find the characters don't fell 40 despite the age of the actors. It's kinda weird. JKH was like a teen with his sudden realization of his crush on Iksoon. Obgyn doctor shouldn't have met that mitress. Just dismiss her. From my drama experiences, she'll comeback when she's near term and obgyn doctor will save her life and her baby. Or she could die on his table, and dad hates him, but revenge for mum? (Yes..I might have watched too many dramas 🙃)

YES. This sort of ensemble drama worked in the Reply series because the focus was more narrow, and the main group was younger so their conflicts were simpler, easy to show and easy to resolve. The types of issues that 40-somethings deal with: divorce, parental illnesses, crisis of faith, personal illness/possible death, prospects of growing old alone, parenting alone - these all fly by with a smile and a joke. I'm not going to stop watching, it's a pleasant show with fun characters, but it is much lighter and fluffier than I expected or wanted.

They could have just started the story off with IJ ,recently divorced and put in an exposition scene of Jung Wang,Joong Won and Ik Jun doing a quick chat about the circumstances of the divorce. 😉

But she didn't develop it. JWan saved IkSun, JWan went to her camp to have food with her, JWan said he likes her. She needed to develop it before the last part.

JWan was awestruck by Ik Sun during those siblings banters. Camera has focused on his face a number of times. The first is when she fearlessly made that bird joke. She was not afraid or intimidated by him like most people (ref. ep 3 and ep 5). He finds that refreshing. And he fell for it. JWan is definitely proactive when he likes someone, except for Shwa (ref. character description). Probably because he doesn't want to ruin their friendship.

JWan is also ready to commit. He wants to settle down (ref. character description). Hence, we saw/ been informed of how he dated but failed to follow through till marriage. He has yet to find the right girl. On the contrary, Ik Sun is not ready. She dismissed her brother's urge for her to get married (ref. ep. 3), she is in her late 30s i.e. 38 y.o. (ref. character description), she is not ready to date (ref. preview ep. 6 of what Ahn Chi Hong said to Ik Jun) and she values her freedom (ref. the bird symbolises Ik Sun). We were given two scene of her looking stunned with JWan's acts: 1. when he went to the camp and 2. when he confessed. She didn't see these coming.

Writer is developing this lone line. We have yet to see Ik Sun's take of JWan's proposal. It would be interesting if she rejected it and he is not giving up. 7 more episodes to go and 3 seasons. Writer sure does have plenty of time to work on these two :)

@miracle23 Regarding Ik-soon and Joo-wan, I feel like they are a good match. Joon-wan is indeed intimidating for those around him (apart from his 'gang' obviously.) I agree that Joon-wan, indeed, found Ik-soon fascinating because she is so refreshing and not intimidated by his presence. Apart from that, I think it's very likely that he fell for her because she possesses great qualities he doesn't have. For example, she is a leader of the other 300 or so people in her camp. She has gained herself a number of degrees from martial art sports. If there is a woman in the world who can tame him it would be her. I also think he's serious about this relationship because everyone knows how long he has been friends with Ik-joon. He knows that Ik-joon knows about all the relationships he has had in the past, yet he still wants to go out with his beloved sister. If he isn't serious about this relationship, I don't think he would have dared asking the woman out. This man has set his (serious) goal now.

Yeah, seriously, I totally agree with majority of this. So much of the friendship aspects of the drama was super well executed and their dynamic was super investing. The scenes in the previous episodes made me easily melt, like when the gang picked up Song-hwa for dinner and when Jun-wan confronted Song-hwa's ex for cheating on her. I think the group had so much potential for heartwarming buddy moments but the story is so messy with focus and pacing, now they decide to make things even more complicated by trying to inject a love story inside this whole cluster. There was no proper background given about JW & Ik-sun's previous relationship so it was so incredibly difficult to enjoy their romantic moments, there was nothing to sympathize over. It was as if the writing underestimated its audiences and thought, "Hey! You'll enjoy this rushed romantic aspect of the story because our cold and serious character is soft!! You don't need any background regarding it, it's fine!! Look!! Stonecold Boy Soft!! You like that right!! Everyone likes that!!" T____T

Other than that, I'm super disappointed to on how they're handling the main 5's friendship, I thought this drama would be solely about them and their individual storylines and how each of them support each other with their personal conflicts, but I was completely wrong. The writing is not using their Protagonists' dynamic to its fullest potential. Like how Ik-jun's low point episode (His divorce and that heartbreaking operation on a father who was fine just a few minutes ago) was suddenly forgotten on the next? And the group had their suspicions about his state but brushed it off? (We can interpret it in a way they can trust each other to handle their conflicts independently, but this drama surely would've hit so hard if it was focusing on their bond more than themselves as individual characters.) Or how Seok-hyeong's family problems could have been addressed better in that group dinner? So much wasted potential.

I wouldn't Dr. Jang's a bad character. I quite like her and she's funny to me, I'm just sad her character is revolved around a crush, I would've loved to see her grow in her empathy naturally, but one crush and boom!! Her sense of kindness exists and now she can easily do it. I would've loved to see that process. I find her crush thing cute, but I'm definitely not on board of it being reciprocated, the way the writing handles romance is absolutely awful, I'm super sad about it because I seriously had high expectations. T_____T I'd love to see her character be something that can stand alone rather than it being labelled as something for another character. I don't want her to be 'The girl who has a crush' but something along the lines of 'The girl who grew out of her non-empathetic and overworking mindset independently and is building her way up to a more healthy working mindset that will not harm others and herself', something like that.

My whole comment...

Yeah I don't think the show means for us to think Minha's crush is deep. She seems to be the type who doesn't feel peaceful until all the people around her are fitting the nice , familiar boxes she is comfortable with. Hence the initiation of Bong cafe(remember she was the first resident to needle Bong for her professor's details)
She has been seeing SH in a different light since the last two episodes, finally seeing his compassion and care for job thanks to the head nurse's expositions. She may also be feeling guilty about judging the quiet doctor too quickly and harshly. She's a fun loving, open and romantic person so it's easy to see how she may have decided upon SH as her new crush having been burnt because of the young, materialistic partners she has been meeting in the dating scene.
She might bring much needed lightness to SH's life if the story goes that way. I would much rather see him learning to find a balancing act between filial duty Vs living your best life but we'll see how this develops

"Also, in case you didn’t know, Joon-wan’s official character description changed and now mentions Ik-soon in it!"

Ohhhh. This is interesting. I'm sure they added her to avoid the love triangle path among our bffs. Initially I was inclined to think that Joonwan was interested in Songhwa. In this case, I really don't mind the addition since they make a really great couple. His confession was so smooth and swoon-worthy.
The moments that stood out for me this episode (either for being laugh-out-loud funny or emotionally touching) are:
-Ikjun covering his eyes with the mask
-Mafia game all throughout (Reply 1988 feels)
-Iksun's power kick and the subsequent events
-THE smooth "Go out with oppa"
-Jo Jung Seok's singing
I don't know if I like Go Ara's cameo as the ex gf.. i don't think we need it. I'm still on board my Ikjun-Songhwa ship. When she told him not to like her, there was discomfort in her voice like the way she looked withe concern when she got those flowers. I don't think she's ready for another relationship. Add in the stress and pressure of having a breast lump. Sorry Dr. Ahn.

You have a point about JW too. Well, it happens to all of us. We choose a path and sometimes regret it when tough times come. But in reality he loves his work just like his bffs.

The surprise birthday party for obgyn doc, imo was all levels of wrong. I hated that they lied to him about his patient's condition. He rushed to the hospital...only for a birthday party. They're lucky nothing happened on the way to the hospital while he was rushing. It's like those dumb April Fools jokes, when one say he/she is ill. People get concerned and wish him/her well. Then the person reveals it's an April Fool joke, to the ire of many.

I just wished the inappropriateness of the situation was addressed. But like many things in this show, it is taken as a joke. Crying wolf about a patients condition is not a joke.

Yessss..I was raging when they pulled that stunt on him. 1) It's all kinda wrong to use a potential medical emergency to pull him into the party. 2) It's highly inconsiderate given that the staff doesn't know him that well personally and they don't know if they were pulling him from celebrations with his close friends/family.
A cake after his usual rounds/surgery during his normal hours would have sufficed 🙄

Yes! I saw his face with the teary eyes and recognized that those red eyes were not the happy eyes. I think he was somewhat 'enraged' a bit? I'm not sure if I use the right word here, but I so agree that that was so inappropriate.

This scene actually taught me a lesson: sometimes, what you think is good for another person (because it is good for other people), may not be good for him/her. Don't expect people to be grateful for what you've done for them because it might not be what they wanted.

Thank you so much for the written episode update!

I really hope that next episode we get to know what is cooking up in Jeong-Won's head cause they also never revealed his response to Ik-Joon's question about what he thinks about Gyeo-Wool. And also regarding that elevator scene, I think it was pretty obvious to JW when he saw IJ leave immediately leaving GW behind (I mean he came frm the back and could clearly see them). Also the fact that IJ is trying to set these two up desperately tells me that something is up (he is inviting a resident to his place for his bro). Well I maybe completely wrong as the writers love leading us to red herrings.

So far the dudes (Joon-Wan and Chi-Hong) have confessed their feelings just hoping the best for my ladies (Min-Ha and GW).

Also what does it mean that the "official character description changed"? I'm sorry I'm clueless 😅

Thanks @lovepark for the recap.

I am thinking this is a pivotal episode, as potentially, it is the start of the story arc for most, if not all, of the characters in this series. In other dramas, and by now, the main characters would be established, and you would have a sense of where story/series is going. So, although I have liked all of the episodes so far, they just have been ambling along, and I was beginning to feel my excitement for each episode was beginning to wane. However, these may be the story arcs going forward:

1. Joon Wan and Ik Soo.
I sense that Joon Wan has liked Ik Soon for a while, but since she was one of his best friend's sister, he could not just 'have a fling with her'. He would have to be serious about wanting to date her, which I think we got an inkling of when he drove all the way to the base where she was stationed to see her. However, Ik Joon – knowing his friend, and being Ik Soon's big brother – might not be as welcoming of that relationship...

2. Song Hwa and breast cancer (or a similar health situation).
Song Hwa is always capable and on point, and this health situation could be the chink in her armour. Even her rejection of Chi Hong may come back full circle, because it is during such a crisis that one needs all kinds of support, so we may see where that goes.

3. Seok Hyung and the dilemma with his father's the mistress.
I am not sure where this story might go, but in seeing how shell-shocked Seok Hyung was by the conversation, the fact that his mother might be beginning to want her own happiness, and also the fact that he is a Ob/Gyn, there is a lot that can happen there.

4. Ik Joon and the actress (or just him getting his love life back on track after divorce)
Although I love Ik Joon, like Song Hwa, they seem so capable and on point, so I am hoping to see other dimension of him where he might be a clumsy or flustered. We'll see...

5. Jung Wan and his future as a priest
I am not sure if that is the main thrust for that character, since, due to the earlier scene with his brother, Jung Wan deciding to quit medicine happens almost every year. So far, i am not sure if there is anything compelling about the decision this time around.

What do you think?

Oh no! Do stay. You should look beyond the obvious. This writer has a good depth in her writings. Don't go for the obvious, then you will feel lackluster cos it is easily predictable. I haven't watch many dramas due to their recycling tropes. But with this writer it's different. It's like reading a puzzle book. I need to look beyond the surface to understand the context and resolve the mystery. It's so intriguing and joyful so far and she is really a good writer.

Omaygah, Jun-wan is so smooth. Super smooth. I can't blame Ik-sun for freezing right then and there in disbelief. I would too because he is sooo swoonworthy there. Anyway, I like their dynamic. Ik-sun's playfulness balanced Jun-wan's grumpiness nicely. I never thought I would see him that amused while someone is playing around with him. The people in his dept is probably not going to believe it even after they saw it themselves.

As for Song-hwa and Seok-hyeong, sigh... I hope Jeong-won's mom and her group of friends can be a good influence to Seok-hyeong's mom. Maybe it's the kind of support she needed to stop living angrily and finally start finding happiness and contentment in a healthier way. Especially since the young mistress has dropped that bomb on Seok-hyeong today. (Which is also a really suck timing for Min-ah to confess her feeling.) Meanwhile, there's Song-hwa and her unexpected health problem. She is the emotional pillar of this story, and I've been taking her calming and supportive presence for granted. I can't imagine how this will affect everyone else as she struggles with her condition. I hope things get better for her soon.

I’m in love with this Wise x Life saga. The first part (the prison) was brilliant, I hope this second part ends well.

I really like how the relationships in this drama are so natural: the leads as best friends, doctors x nurses, sunbaes x hoobaes, JW x his mom friends -this interaction was so freaking cute. I loved the whole lunch-mafia game scene, it was cute and hilarious, it was the best part of the episode so far. Especially when JW hide behind the ahjussi because he got scared of his mom, lol- etc.
These relationships are funny and they don't feel force. I have watched all the Reply series and Prison Playbook, so I totally get this writer, and I love her. I really get into the friendships, the families dynamics and the needs of every character. And let’s be honest, this drama has great dynamics and is light as hell.

But yeah, I hope they still continue to be friends at least.

SH is his direct superior so it'd be an ethically grey area for her to pursue a relationship with him. Come to think of it, the same applies to SH and Min-ah as well. GW's atleast not directly under JW but then they have their own struggles to deal with

Thoughts:
*JJS is killing as Ik Jun, but then we all knew he would 🙂. If the JW-IS ship actually does set sail(we are yet to see her response to JW) I can't wait for IJ's reactions.
*After that glorious kick,JW sure did recover smoothy and send IS on a trip with his smooth confession . I do understand how many people would feel that this attraction came out of no where. I don't buy that he had a longish crush on her given that he only recognized her due to her scar and uniform in the ER. I can however buy that he has grown to like her liveliness and playfulness during the time of her recovery. But since most of those intercations seemed to have happened off camera, I do get why people are not as invested in this line. There's also the case of IS 's apparent crush on Capt.Ahn. Will JW's smooth talkin' be enough to sway IS away? Guess we'll hav to tune in for EP 6 to find out.
*Jung Wan-GW arc is getting interesting. In the child abuse case, once again GW showed that she might not be the best a human interactions, but she can get down on the ground and get dirty to get the job done. JW's non-response to her brave/stupid act seems very out of character for him. I am beginning to think he does notice her in a different light than others. I love GW-IJ dynamics. Her instant demand to be invited over to his home when she learnt JW is living there and IJ's immediate acquiescence and plotting were hilarious. However, we really do need to see JW's actual thoughts on priesthood to know how far we can actually root for them to succeed.😬
*SH's potential diagnosis is the darkest cloud in the show right now. I liked how direct her and the Cap were when she confronted him. Eagerly waiting to see how the diagnosis would shape their relationship and the core 5 going forward.

I also found Jeong-won's reaction and behavior around Gyeo-wool to be a bit out of character for him. He is naturally warm and very caring, so his coldness towards her is a bit weird. I wonder if he does realize her romantic feelings towards him (besides, Ik-jun isn't the subtlest when it comes to matchmaking these two) and knowingly responded that way. We need to know Jeong-won's thought about this soon. Because his coldness could mean he tried to discourage her from pursuing him further, or it could also mean he is just trying to cover his awkwardness around her knowing her feelings. I hope it's the latter. *crossing fingers*

Reading comments here crystalized my thoughts about Jeong-won and Gyeo-wool. It's indeed true that in Jeong-won's perspective, GW is actually having some kind of love affair with Ik-joon. If we tried to be him, it really looks like that. When Ik-joon drew a heart on the glass door of an elevator, he meant it for GW's heart for Jeong-won. If Jeong-won indeed saw this, he would have thought those two were speaking love language to one another. By this, I'd guess that the unnatural reaction towards GW is the result of him suspecting her to be in an affair with Ik-joon.

Ooohhh I like both of these theories @gadis, @epyc2010 @mmmmm ...JW pretending indifference to let GW down easily/block any interest he might have in that direction Orr JW thinking GW-IJ are having a thing..
The second scenario would obviously be more comical- can't wait for the misunderstandings that may arise if GW does end up a dinner guest at IJ's place. Now that IJ's divorced , any potential moral concerns JW had should be laid to rest but then there's the equally icky fact that IJ is her direct superior.

Ik Jun is my favourite character in the drama. Not only because it is played by JJS but also Ik Jun is quite my type of guy. I really like a man or a girl who is talkative, easy going, fun to be with, broadminded & make their appearance visible & noticeable in a group with their shining, radiant personality.. Besides this world need persons like him especially in these times when most of the world has become negative , impatient to others, egoistic and inconsiderate to others.

Being doc all 5 of them & other side characters doctors are very nice towards their patients. Being a doc ,to be nice with your patients is required, expected & appreciated . But other than that how Ik Jun treats people around him is actually very remarkable. Of all the acts of his kindness , there are a couple of them that stood out to me the most. First when he helped the nurse with the desk so she could finish her meal & fixed the bed for the patient when apparently it was nurse's or some other lower staff duty. I mean I don't think there would be much people who would do that for their subordinate or workers lower than them in hierarchy.

2ndly how he treated the other doc in operation theatre who was unable to stop the blood of the patient. Ik Jun did not impose his self instead asked the other doc if he needed him in the surgery. And then how he lifted the other doc spirit by saying some kind words to him quite contrary to how JunWan treats Doc Do Infront of patients even.

And last but not the least how he became such close & trusted friend with the kitchen aunty in a small amount of time , that she immediately called him in need & how he went in the mess & served. Who would do that? Especially being of his caliber , he really does not have ego & prejudice. For all these events & more he surely earns more of my respect in every passing episode.

While I am at it , I should also mention Dr JeongWon . How is he a daddy long leg & how he treated Dr Jang when she was rude to the mama of the boy . Like in private , did not ruin her self respect by scolding her in front of everyone , It is such a professional way but I don't think many people would do that when nowadays many of us take pleasure in disrespecting others by any means possible. So all in all Dr Ik Jun & Dr JeongWon are much much needed in this world. Their positive energy, the behaviour of letting go others with their mistakes, been humble, is much much desired.

I haven't read all the recap, but I just want to share some thoughts about this episode..

Let's begin with Ik-joon. I also agree with comments here that Ik-joon has proved to be a very warm-hearted person. His light shines through and through, from a cafeteria lady to almost everyone around him. He is a wonderful person, and I truly hope he gets to meet good people in his life.

Joon-wan was my fav character in the last few episodes. I loved him in the OR, but I think his personality is too much for me to handle (Did he ask you to handle him? No!) LoL so I guess I'll leave that role to Ik-soon. To be honest, if I were Ik-joon I would probably be against this relationship. He knows how many girls Joon-was has dated, and everyone lasted no longer than 3 months. He is a difficult person in terms of dating. However, I do feel like (as I mentioned above somewhere) that if there is a person who can tame Joon-wan, that'd probably be Ik-soon. It just seems like she has been made for him! I just hope Joon-wan is serious enough about this relationship because of the possible consequences this may have on this relationship with his friend(s).

Song-hwa. Now, if I can choose a person to be with or probably get married to, I'd choose the male version of Song-hwa. She is that great. I hope she reveals her struggle with her friends because that's what friends are for, but I feel like she won't do that. Her secret will be discovered unintentionally somehow, and all her friends will know about it. They will be there for her. And Dr. Ahn oh my Dr. Ahn! I love how caring he is towards Song-hwa. I know he is inferior to her in terms of rank, but I think he is a good-enough person for her. She is already so great by herself, she just needs someone to take care of her and I feel like Dr.Ahn can be that person. Unlike other comments, I still cling on to the feeling that these two will end up together. I know I might be blind to the facts and to a fault, but that's my feeling. Ik-joon is a wonderful person I have no doubts about that, but for Song-hwa, I'd say I root for Dr.Ahn. Sorry Ik-joon.

Seok-hyung and another doctor who has a crush on him. To be honest, I think Seok-hyung needs a therapy. It does seem like he wasn't like this before those horrible incidents happened. Nowadays, he seems like a walking zomby. He keeps to himself most of the time, and clings to his mother too much. I agree with one above comment that I hope he will find a middle ground between being a good son and having a good life. For another doctor (whose name I am unsure of), I don't like this kind of people in reality. It scares me to see that there are people who so easily judge other people based on their standards, especially when their standards are ..well.. not that good. For me, I hope they'll not have a romantic relationship whatsoever. I'd be nice if Seok-hyung may learn some good lessons from the other doctor, but apart from that, I don't even think he should...

...be that close with her.

Jeong-won. This is one of the most complex doctors of all five. I can't say I know him because he seems to possess, and enjoy possessing many secrets about himself. At this point, I still believe that he wants to be a priest. However, I'm not sure if I'm tricked by the writer-nim as I'm an easily tricked person (please have mercy on me writer-nim.) But what I'm sure is he is a good son to his mother, so I don't think he will actually become a priest without a genuine consent from his mother (and you have to study in Italy to be a priest because of the age limit, whose mother is going to allow that given that her son is already a doctor?)

I know right, I think Jungwon is actually the most mysterious out of the five (instead of Seokhyung). People are free to do whatever they want but Jungwon is... idk, out of this world? Sometimes he just doesn't feel real to me because I don't think there are people like him in this world.
I'm waiting to know whether the Jungwon we know (aka a saint) is how he really is or did the writer purposely trick us

I have to say that I still don't really like Minha. Everything about her just feels so demanding and judgmental (although I love how she doesn't waste her time and dumps that materialistic guy right away.. if that's what really happens since I don't really trust her judgment either). I hope she won't end up with Seokhyung or the show will really give us a chance to love her. For now, she's not likeable at all to me.

Regarding Songhwa, why do I have a feeling that she may really have cancer? Her life seems very perfect and she lives very diligently, this may be a challenge to that.

Jungwon seems adamant in changing professions but I need more explanation on WHY he wants to become a priest. I know it's a calling, and he repeatedly says he wants to quit becoming a doctor a few times, but I just need other types of "confirmation" about how serious he is. And poor Gyuwool still knows nothing :(((((

I love Joonwan and Iksoon soooooo much but it feels way too familiar since Kyungho's character dated his best friend's sister too on Prison Playbook. Waiting for Ikjoon to find out and lose it because up until now he still thinks Chihong is the one interested in his sis (lmao if only he knows CH likes SH)

I love this drama so far. It's a mix of light and emotional. It's strong enough to make you tune in every week but not too strong that you begin demanding for 2 eps a week. It's different from everything I've ever watched, so refreshing to see a medical drama like this!

I agree with all your points, I guess. Regarding Min-ha, I will avoid this type of people at all costs in reality. I can just not be with this type of people, they are too judgmental and will make me feel suffocated to be around. I also feel like Song-hwa is having cancer. Her life is too perfect, and there is nothing such as perfect live in this world.

As a doctor, dealing with COVID-19, this show is one of my guilty pleasures when I get a break, But, they really, really need a better Medical advisor, because there are so, so many protocol mistakes, and they just distract from the story, silly as it is. NO makeup is allowed in OR....the girl with the blue eyeshadows would not be allowed to enter. gloved hands touching all kinds of things they shouldn't touch, including their face....and it goes on and on. Seriously, just get an advisor who can make small changes to make it better. But then again, it is a silly show, with doctors in a band, and all kinds of other roll your eyes stuff. Still fun.

Still, HPL is not the worst medical show I've seen, it's certainly miles better than some of the American ones! A lot of the emotions ring true, especially the medical student scenes T-T It's definitely a nice break from grim reality and reminds me why I chose medicine. Stay safe - we are going to get through this!
