Hospital Playlist: Episode 7

Bad things happen in life from illness to family troubles, and it can feel like the world is crumbling around you. However, a simple reminder that we’re all flawed humans can be enough to show someone with no hope that beauty still exists. Whether it comes from a close-knit friend group or a random, kind stranger, small acts of kindness can have profound effects on a weary soul.

EPISODE 7 RECAP

Jung-won paces back and forth as he waits for an update on the liver for his patient, but when Gyu-wool calls, she tells him that the liver is too big. After contemplating what to do, he decides to proceed with their plans, anyways.

Ik-joon drops by the GS residences’ office and finds Yoon-bok sleeping at a table by herself. He asks if she wants to see a liver transplant, so she follows him to the operating room. On the way, Ik-joon explains the complications concerning Jung-won’s surgery, and Yoon-bok slips into informal speech to express her shock.

While Jung-won operates on the baby, Gyu-wool arrives with the liver. Clearly out of breath, she explains to Jung-won that the elevators were broken, so she ran walked briskly up the stairs. She waits for Jung-won’s response, but since he remains quiet, Ik-joon praises her instead.

Song-hwa stretches before her surgery, and Chi-hong notifies her that the operating room is ready. While he’s here, she suggests that he lead his first surgery next time, and Chi-hong can barely suppress his smile as he thanks her for the opportunity.

Despite some difficulties, Jung-won successfully completes the transplant and passes along the good news to the patient’s parents. They burst into tears and thank Jung-won for saving their baby. However, when they mention how lucky they are that a brain-dead donor appeared, Jung-won reminds them to be thankful towards the donor because she was the one who saved the patient.

In the OB/GYN department, Min-ha scurries around to check on patients while Eun-won sits and talks with a guardian. When Min-ha catches Eun-won chatting about her personal life, she tells her colleague that they’re busy right now. From the sidelines, Nurse Han comments on the impending showdown between the fox and the bear, though she doesn’t specify who is who. Meanwhile, Eun-won calls Seok-hyung and verifies some orders with him.

Gyu-wool and the medical students wait for Ik-joon to bring their food—he wanted to pick it up so he could chat with the delivery person, hence his tardiness. When he arrives with bags of sandwiches, he tells the others that he invited someone to join them. Gyu-wool tidies her hair, expecting Jung-won to come, but her face falls when Joon-wan enters the room. The lackluster response makes Joon-wan pause at the door, heh.

Joon-wan greets the twins, calling them by the wrong name again, so Yoon-bok corrects him. She mentions how one of his guesses (“Ma-ne and Mo-ne”) are actually their cousins’ names, and Ik-joon asks if they’re twins. It’s Woo-joo’s girlfriend!

The chief residents along with Chi-hong join Dr. Bong in the cafeteria for another session of Bong Salon. Before they begin, Jae-hak asks Chi-hong why he quit the army, and Chi-hong promises to tell them another time.

Gyu-wool and Min-ha join the group—the latter looking a couple of shades darker than usual—and the two friends bicker about Min-ha’s makeup. Seok-min asks how they became friends, so Gyu-wool explains that they’re both ARMY. Old-man Jae-hak interprets them literally: “They’re your juniors, Dr. Ahn Chi-hong!”

Suggesting a change of pace, Dr. Bong offers to talk about his residency, but the entire group gets up to leave. He quickly takes it back, and as soon as he mentions the friends’ love lives, the residents return to their seats eagerly… except Jae-hak who mutters under his breath that he’s not interested. Hahahaha!

According to Dr. Bong, Ik-joon and Joon-wan were popular in college while Seok-hyung barely dated anyone. Even his marriage was arranged and didn’t even last a year, though currently, Seok-hyung is dating…his tv.

As for Song-hwa, she was a CC (campus couple) and has dated a couple of guys but has never wanted to get married. Chi-hong asks if she dated Ik-joon, and Dr. Bong swears that those two are just friends. As for Jung-won, any girl interested in him has to defeat God first. Gyu-wool frowns at that, and Jae-hak misunderstands the situation, assuming that Gyu-wool looks glum because she’s a Buddhist.

Chi-hong studies for his upcoming, lead surgeon operation, so Seok-min offers him some advice. While Song-hwa allows her residents to make one mistake, she will kick you out after the second.

Jae-hak washes up before entering Joon-wan’s operating room, and Dr. Chun appears next to him. He comments on how close Jae-hak is with Joon-wan, and the chief resident brags about how fond Joon-wan is of him. Dr. Chun agrees, saying that Joon-wan talks very highly of him, and Jae-hak blurts out his disbelief.

Seon-bin and Nurse Hwang peek into Chi-hong’s operating room, too nervous to watch from inside. As he performs his first lead surgery, Song-hwa monitors from the side and gives him pointers along the way. In the middle of the surgery, Chi-hong stops operating and grimaces, which Song-hwa notices. The surgery continues, and Chi-hong makes a couple of more mistakes before Song-hwa stops him. She demonstrates what he should have done and takes over for the rest of the surgery.

In Joon-wan’s operating room, he cuts through the vein again and sighs as he looks up at the clock. Though the surgery was predicted to last five hours, already nine hours have passed, leaving the guardians worried.

After the operation is over, Joon-wan meets with the guardians and recounts the surgery from the very beginning. Jae-hak interjects to tell the parents that the surgery was a success, and when Joon-wan gives another long-winded answer, Jae-hak jumps in a second time to reassure the parents.

While snacking in the changing room, Jae-hak nags Joon-wan for being insensitive and urges him to put the guardians at ease first. Overhearing the scolding, Jung-won laughs and agrees with Jae-hak that his friend could be nicer.

Jae-hak compliments Jung-won’s personality, mentioning how he lives up to his nickname “Buddha,” while Joon-wan lives up to his nickname… Before he can say it, Joon-wan glares at him, so he simply says “Buddha’s friend.”

Jung-won asks them about Dr. Chun since they received an anonymous letter implicating Dr. Chun in a bribery scandal. Jung-won says that a lot of the doctors in the cardiothoracic surgery department are linked with this case and asks if Joon-wan is involved as well.

In the hospital director’s office, Dr. Chun denies the accusations, explaining the corporate credit card payments as a mistake by the golf course. The director mentions the expensive membership (200 million won, which is roughly $160,000), but Dr. Chun tells him that his brother owns the course. He casually mentions how Joon-wan spun an outrageous tale, but the director just stares at the rambling doctor with a knowing look.

Seok-min finds Chi-hong in the office, sighing over his failed surgery, and lets him know that Seon-bin didn’t finish her first lead surgery as well. He invites the resident to drinks, but Chi-hong has the night shift and can’t go out even if he wants to join him.

Jung-won asks Joon-wan again if he went golfing with Dr. Chun, and Joon-wan says that he went once. However, he paid for himself since he noticed something odd when the other doctor was paying. Waving asides Jung-won’s worries, Joon-wan mentions how he has other things on his mind at the moment.

As soon as Joon-wan steps out of the office, Jae-hak pesters him about what he did over the weekend, worried that Joon-wan might be involved in the scandal. Joon-wan finally blows up and tells his chief resident to stay out of his business. Jae-hak refuses to relent—though he sounds terrified—and Joon-wan finally tells him that he ate jajangmyun.

Joon-wan meets with Ik-soon to eat jajangmyun again and jokes about the Korean army using the spicy noodles as a secret weapon. Ik-soon warns him not to joke around since people from her base might hear, but Joon-wan doesn’t see the issue since his girlfriend is a high-ranking officer.

He guesses that only the lieutenant general and general are higher than her, and Ik-soon smirks, deducing from his naïve comment that he was exempt from military service. He admits that he was and offers to share his life story, but she declines.

Ik-soon looks down at her bowl and is touched by Joon-wan mixing her noodles for her. He acts as if it’s not a big deal but confesses to only doing it for her. Returning the favor, Ik-soon places a yellow radish in Joon-wan’s bowl. They’re so cute!

Gyu-wool hurries to the hospital because she’s late for breakfast, and once Jae-hak sees her, he comments on how fall has already arrived. Nurse Seonwoo explains to Gyu-wool that the hospital staff determine the season from her clothing: white t-shirt means summer while denim shirt means falls. Jae-hak offers to buy breakfast as a thank you to Gyu-wool for acting as a human calendar and brandishes Joon-wan’s card. Hehehe.

Song-hwa and Chi-hong meet with a patient who has an upcoming, awake surgery. Due to the nature of the operation and the potential for trauma, Song-hwa makes sure that the patient is prepared, but the patient shows apathy towards his situation. He believes his career as a police officer is now over, but Song-hwa tells him not to give up.

Ik-joon furrows his brow as he looks over the charts of a transplant patient. Her numbers suggest that she hasn’t been taking her medication, and when he advises hospitalization, she tells him that she just wants to die. Ik-joon refuses to let her give up on her life and admits her to the hospital for treatment.

After Jung-won examines a patient in the ER, Joon-hee comes up to him and invites him to go to the movies next time as well. Gyu-wool looks alarmed by the news and eavesdrops on Nurse Seonwoo grilling Joon-hee about what happened. Joon-hee brags about eating dinner with Jung-won alone, but when Nurse Seonwoo learns that Joon-hee asked him out, she dismisses any notions of romantic feelings since Jung-won never turns down an invitation.

Joon-wan texts Ik-soon, asking her to send him a photo, and she sends him a picture of her wearing camouflage and screaming. He laughs at the photo, unaware of his surroundings, and freaks out Jung-won flickers the lights to grab his attention.

Avoiding Jung-won’s questions about who he’s texting, Joon-wan asks if he told the others to meet in the parking garage so they can carpool. Jung-won complains about always having to notify the others, but Joon-wan points out that Jung-won probably called everyone already…and he did. Heh.

In the parking garage, someone taps Song-hwa on the shoulder, but she turns the other way and ruins Ik-joon’s joke. She asks if he thinks they’re in Reply 1988, so he points out her old headphones and asks if she’s part of Seoul Claypot. Someone then pulls Ik-joon’s hair, and he immediately stares at the ground and finds Seok-hyung sitting there.

Joon-wan pulls up to the group in his new car (of course, the others mock him for showing off) and drives them to the restaurant. On the ride there, Seok-hyung says that the car smells like perfume, but Ik-joon points out that it also smells like nature which means the new girlfriend probably lives outside the city and works in a job that causes her to sweat. Joon-wan freaks out over Ik-joon’s near-accurate deductions and tries to steer the conversation away from his love life, but the guys keep pestering him for more details

Suddenly, a call from “My Love, Dove (Bidulgi)” pops up on the car’s dashboard, and Joon-wan frantically asks Jung-won to grab his phone and hang up the call. Of course, his friends do the exact opposite, and Ik-joon answers the call.

Luckily for Joon-wan, they arrive at the restaurant, and he manages to pry his phone out of Ik-joon’s hand. While Joon-wan talks with Ik-soon, the friends head inside first, and Ik-joon comments on how he suddenly misses his sister when he never did before. Hah, he totally knows, doesn’t he?

As they eat dinner, the guys advise Seok-hyung to tell his mom about the mistress’s pregnancy, but he still feels conflicted over what to do. While Seok-hyung goes over the options, in the background, Jung-won gets up to grab more water and ends up helping a restaurant worker.

The friends unanimously agree that Seok-hyung’s mom has a right to know, but it isn’t until Song-hwa tells him to inform his mom that he finally relents. The others complain about Seok-hyung never listening to them and wonder why they even bother giving him advice. While they talk, one of the workers approaches their table, asking if anyone would like a freebie, and all five friends raise their hands.

In the morning, Seok-hyung visits Song-hwa’s office and tells her that his mom finally agreed to a divorce after hearing about the pregnancy. As she comforts him, Joon-wan enters the office looking for Seok-hyung—correctly guessing that his friend would be here to inform Song-hwa first. He asks if she saw “him” yet, and tells her that Chairman Yang is in the VIP ward with a fake illness to avoid going to the prosecutor’s office.

Seok-hyung gets up from his seat, and Song-hwa grabs him, assuming that he’s going to confront the chairman. Seok-hyung tells her that he was only leaving to meet his patients, and then turns to Joon-wan, ordering his friend not to treat the chairman.

As Ik-joon makes his rounds, he learns about his noncompliant patient’s story and how she discovered her husband’s infidelity after receiving a liver from him. The nurse is sympathetic to her plight, but Ik-joon says that she’s only hurting herself.

Ik-joon checks up on his patient (cameo by Kim Sun-young) who asks if he’s single since she wants to introduce him to her sister. Ik-joon accepts the compliments but tells her that he’s a married father. The patient calls his wife lucky since he’s her ideal type unlike her husband (cameo by Choi Moo-sung). Before Ik-joon leaves, the husband tries handing him a golden turtle that his son won. Ha!

Seok-hyung’s phone rings during a consultation, and he answers a call from his mom’s worried chauffeur. Elsewhere in the hospital, Seok-hyung’s mom wanders through the halls, peeking into the different restrooms.

Ik-joon visits the noncompliant patient next, and she tells him that she doesn’t want to live with this liver anymore. No matter what Ik-joon or the nurse says, the patient argues that the world may seem kind and beautiful to them but not to her.

After searching multiple restrooms, Seok-hyung’s mom finds a maintenance worker and asks for a favor. Meanwhile, in the VIP ward, Chairman Yang and his mistress eat lobster with gusto. His secretary brings them coffee, and the chairman asks him to tell the “miss” outside to bring him an IV drip (ugh, he’s as terrible as they said).

The secretary motions towards the mistress and explains how “this person” prohibited any hospital staff from entering the room. The mistress scoffs at the secretary’s refusal to properly address her, but the secretary ignores her and leaves. While the mistress whines to the chairman, Seok-hyung’s mom enters the room and pours a bucket of dirty water over the mistress’s head.

Chairman Yang yells at his wife, but she curses him right back for daring to show his face at his son’s hospital. The chairman at least seems surprised by this news, but that doesn’t stop Seok-hyung’s mom from tearing into him. Seok-hyung barges into the room to grab his mom, but she pushes him away to confront the cheating couple.

Just yesterday, she had finally decided to grant them a divorce but seeing their disgusting actions today has made her change her mind. She vows to keep him legally bound to her and tells the mistress to stop dreaming—she’ll always be a cohabitant and nothing more.

During the awake brain surgery, Chi-hong talks with the patient and asks him about his occupation and why he chose it. The patient tells him that he dreamed of being an officer since his childhood but now that dream is dead. Chi-hong assures the patient that he can return to work or find a different career because he did, too.

At twenty-nine, Chi-hong became sick and was forced to quit the military after experiencing paralysis during training. However, he’s living well, now, and tells the patient that he can do the same. For the first time, the patient doesn’t disagree, and before going back to sleep, he tells Chi-hong, “good luck.”

Ik-joon talks with Woo-joo over the phone since he’ll be late tonight, and Woo-joo tells him about the cookies he made—though the last, remaining one is for his girlfriend. Ik-joon stops by his noncompliant patient’s room and persuades her to live once more.

He shares his own story of divorcing a cheating spouse and admits to feeling hurt and embarrassed. Until one day, he realized that he was wasting his time. The patient cries as she hears his words, and Ik-joon tells her to recover because it’s her life. His words finally reach her, and she takes her medicine.

Chi-hong visits Song-hwa in her office and learns that she knew about his illness the day after he messed up his lead surgery. Song-hwa wonders why he kept it a secret, and he tells her that he missed the timing and felt too prideful to confess afterwards when everyone started asking him.

He asks Song-hwa why she didn’t scold him during the surgery when he messed up so many times, and she replies, “I trust you.” She knows how much Chi-hong studies and prepares, so naturally, she assumed that he had his reasons that day.

He wonders why she didn’t buy him drinks, then, but Song-hwa actually went to his office later that day but was too late. Flashing back to that night, Seok-min told Chi-hong that Seon-bin switched shifts with him so he could go out for drinks. She knew that he would need it and was doing him this favor as a friend (making sure to emphasize that she didn’t like Chi-hong).

Gyu-wool waits outside Jung-won’s office, and once he steps out, she asks him to buy her dinner… just the two of them. Jung-won stands there, unable to respond.

In his living room, Seok-hyung listens to music until his phone falls and disconnects his headphones. As he goes to pick it up, he takes off his eye mask and finds his friends making funny faces at him while holding beers and snacks.

The band gets together in the basement and sing “You are Always” by Mono, and the camera zooms in on each friend before changing to another scene. For Song-hwa, we see the police officer patient open his eyes, and Chi-hong informs the patient’s colleagues who are waiting outside the ICU.

For Joon-wan, the scene goes back to his date with Ik-soon, and when he goes in for a hug, she pushes him a little too hard and sends him flying to the ground. Right before he goes, though, he marches up to Ik-soon and pecks her on the lips.

Next is Ik-joon, and the scene changes to Woo-joo who’s sleeping in his bed. On the kitchen table is a cookie for his dad. He’s so adorable! Switching over to the hospital, the Reply 1988 couple share some mango with the noncompliant patient, gesturing at her to stay strong.

As for Seok-hyung, the camera turns to Min-ha who rocks in her bed, wanting to call him but unable to gather the courage. Last is Jung-won, showing Gyu-wool in her bed—hair still wet from her shower—and looking defeated.

At the hospital, Jae-hak greets Joon-wan as he gets on the elevator and tells him about his date plans with his wife. He flinches when Joon-wan reaches over to grab a pen, so Joon-wan tells him that others might misunderstand. He says that he won’t kill him, but Jae-hak argues that he could with his words. When the doors open, Joon-wan realizes that he got on the wrong elevator, so Jae-hak offers to help and pushes the button for him again.

Jae-hak waves to someone in the lobby (probably his wife) and answers a call from his landlord. She asks about this month’s rent, which confuses him since he signed a deposit-based contract. Now the landlord is confused and tells Jae-hak that he signed a monthly rent contract. Uh-oh…

COMMENTS

Having aired half its run, the show continues to be remarkable, and with each episode, I’m falling more in love with these characters. The friendship between the five friends is amazing, and the show never falters when it comes to their relationships. Last week, they rallied around Song-hwa, and this week, they’re at Seok-hyung’s side to help him through his family drama. The restaurant scene was sweet because it was obvious from their dynamic that this wasn’t the first time the three guys gave thoughtful responses to Seok-hyung’s dilemma, only for Seok-hyung to ignore them in favor of Song-hwa’s opinion. Despite knowing that Seok-hyung really only listens to Song-hwa, they still offer him advice even it frustrates them because they care about their friend.

The show also emphasizes how their friendship isn’t one-note. They know how to be serious if the situation calls for it like with Song-hwa’s health issue, but they also know how to have fun and let loose. Each friend is different, and depending on the problem, their approach to helping also differs. In Seok-hyung’s case, rather than words of comfort or intimacy, they bring him beer and rock out. They understand what Seok-hyung needs—maybe even more than he knows himself—and give him that outlet to relieve his stress. It’s also interesting to note how this was one of the rare occasions where all five friends drank together since they mostly stuck to non-alcoholic drinks because of emergency calls. Thus, the fact that they brought beer to Seok-hyung’s house also implied their intentions to be with him that night without any other distractions.

Since most of the characters are adults with well-formed personalities, it’s harder to spot moments of character growth in the show. Most of the time, it’s more about revelation—showing the viewers another side of a character that was always there but hidden. When done well, it adds another dimension to a character’s action and opens up the viewer’s perspective. The creators behind Hospital Playlist have always excelled at this as evident in their previous work (though sometimes it has been their crutch, as well), and this show is no different. Whether it be a supporting character like Chi-hong or a more central character like Joon-wan, we learn more about these characters’ lives throughout the show that both explain and color how we view their actions. The show doesn’t rush to show its viewers every single detail about the characters, and instead, it gives out information in pieces as it fits the narrative.

Though instant gratification has its own charms, the show knows how to build up a story to span episodes, which is what they did with Ik-joon’s divorce. Since the actual process of the divorce happened off-screen, it was left to the viewers to fill in the blanks, and from Ik-joon’s behavior and jokes (e.g., he was a single father before but is now one legally), it seemed like he quickly got over it and was relatively fine with it beyond the initial shock and hurt. However, for the first time, we really hear Ik-joon’s opinion about the divorce and how it affected him, personally. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it took months for the viewers to finally learn anything substantial about his divorce because he probably needed time to process it by himself. The seemingly always confident Ik-joon felt embarrassed and self-conscious because of his cheating spouse, and though he learned his lesson to let go of people who aren’t worth his time, from the tone of his voice when he shared his story, it seems that he’s still healing. Thankfully, he has Woo-joo by his side as well as four awesome friends who constantly remind him that he’s loved.

The two main hospital cases this time were the police officer patient and the noncompliant patient, and in both situations, a doctor shares his story to show support. Both Chi-hong and Ik-joon allow themselves to be vulnerable in front of their patient, and it’s their genuineness in these moments that touches their patient’s closed-off hearts. It’s not just about relating to the patient, but showing them that they are human, too. In contrast, Eun-won shares her personal life with a guardian, but the effect feels different because there’s a lack of sincerity. Her conversation is mostly superficial, which makes it come across as unnecessary, especially when their department was so busy. Nurse Han called the two OB/GYN residents a bear and fox, and it seems safe to say that Eun-won is the fox. What that exactly means going forward in the show, I don’t quite know, but with two bears in the department, hopefully the fox doesn’t run too wild.

I may sound like a broken record, but I ❤️ this show!!

Gyu-wool and Min-ha - Their friendship is so adorable. I love how non judgmental and frank they are with One another.

Oh. Woo-Joo!! My heart melted when I saw that single cookie for his dad. He is such an adorable kid. His girlfriend is lucky :))

Lol. Ik-Joon knows right? You think the sister told her brother before she decided to date Joon-won? Am very curious. Because this show keeps throwing us surprises, all pleasant ones. It would be cliche to expect him to be surprised and upset with his friend that he is dating his sister. So I expect the show to not do this.

Jung-Won : I can sense she is affecting him. He is usually nice to everyone but he has been cold to her. He never appreciates her (during the chase of the criminal nor the liver transport). I am really curious to see how this goes.

Is it Thursday yet!

Right?! Jungwon is weird around Gungwol.

I was waiting for this recap because of the fox-bear analogy. That was really confusing.

The car scene cracks me up every time.

Absolutely! Either he knows that she likes him and hence keeps his distance. Or, he is affected by her and is trying not to encourage his feelings any further.
For someone who has gone to dinner and movie with other interns/nurses, he should not be hesitating. But he is. Am dying to know what is going to happen!!

Ah yes.. The fox/bear. I think Min-Ah is going to have a tough time pursuing the OB/GYN doctor.

Car scene: lmao. I was laughing hard. And Joon-Won's face - priceless.

Honestly the possibility of ik Joon knowing didn't cross my mind until the recap pointed it out but yah it could be..
Also, yes Jung Won is definitely affected by her. From her defeated look, I'm.guessing she'll be rejected and Jung won doesn't reject anyone so there's that.

Ik Joon mentions about how he knows his sister very well. So am guessing they have a good relationship. But he also didn't know his sister had a bad break-up.
The writers leave so many clues. We just have to wait and watch!
Poor puppy- her defeated face will be hard to watch!!

I don't think Ik Joon knows about the relationship yet.He seemed really concerned when Cap Ahn pointed out that Ik Soon is still not over 'that' incident. He was even gonna discuss it with JW. He would definitely have had a heart2heart with JW if he knew he was pursuing a relationship with IS,no?

That’s what we would normally expect. So that’s exactly why I don’t expect that to happen in this show.
May be he did have a talk with his sister about her bad breakup after he learned about it from Captain Ahn. So may be she mentions about dating Joon-wan to her brother.
We never know. With this show we never know.

The one "romance" I want to know about keeps being prolonged. It is incredibly annoying, but in the best way. My love for the writers know no bounds and I don't say much in the comments because they fill the episodes with so much, but it is all so fulfilling and wonderful. I just love this drama. I wish there were more episodes.

Me too. I wish there were more episodes. Knowing that there is a season two makes me wary that my expected OTP won't becoming together yet..but I can wait. This show has made me like a puppy waiting for a snack to be thrown at me. I'm excited for what is to come. I'm not sure if we're talking about the same romance but we share the same sentiment hahaha

They are my OTP as well.. I'm so glad how things work out at the end of season 1. I hope it will continue to blossoms in next seasons. Oh and about the fox.. In eps 4 there's a scene prolonged when she bow to Jeong-won in the operating room. I don't know if it means anything, I just hope she didn't have her eyes on our beloved pediatric surgeon, coz he belongs to Gyeo-ul ^^

Thank you, @lovepark for the episode summary. Aside from the cameos of Reply 1988 cast, the characters in Hospital Playlist do things that were done in Reply 1988. Maybe the writer put this in for a) laughs, b) reminders of how we loved Reply 1988, or c) they're doing it again because they don't have new ideas. Whatever, it's still okay with me. They can have Ryu Jun-yeol come in as Ik-soon's friend or Go Kyung-pyo as a visiting doctor.

Thanks for the recap!
I loved the R1988 references in this episode.

The highlight of the episode for me was the car ride to the restaurant. I especially loved how Jun-wan slipped up and asked for "Oppa's handphone" and how the conversation always becomes fractured into multiple conversations all happening at the same time.

The friends showing up and making silly faces was so great. This and the mafia scene from earlier reminded me that friends act immature and foolish no matter the age.

Dr.Ahn Chi-hong's story was sad in how normal it was. It could happen to anyone. Love the character arcs of Chi-hong, Jae-hak, Seok-min and Min-ha as they deal with their residencies and the professors.

Jung-won going on platonic dates with everyone is lowkey hilarious. No wonder he's low on money, between this and the Daddy-long legs program. Given how quickly he picks up on Jun-wan's crush and Song-hwa's mood, I wonder if this is is his way of avoiding residents. It will be interesting how the professors deal with their residents crushes on them.

Ik-jun's wife and Seok-hyung's dad are despicable.

Looking forward to this week's episode. Can't wait the two more days. Wish they had more episodes.

Even after episode 7, I still can't feel Gyeo Wool x Jeong Won romance even though they are just so many scenes given for its purpose. Both are not yet shown to have any emotional connection or any heart fluttering scene - like Min Ha's and Seok Hyeong's perilla leaves scene - very short, but the electric goes through me as they locked eyes.

Other than their different level of maturity, emotional incompatibility and void of emotional connection, the elephant in the room that needs to be addressed and tackled first before anything romantic between them is Jeong Won's priesthood dream.

He has had that dream for years and nothing is stopping him, not even mom, not even his past love from his 20s and his fame in his 30s (his character's description on the official homepage) - then would it be logical for him to waver just because of her crush on him? The only canon ship with him right now is Jeong Won x the Lord, so that needs to be tackled first before we can move onto his romance.

And if he ever decide to give up the priesthood dream, I don't think it will be because of a mere crush. It must've been by his own realisation that there's something he loves doing more than being a priest ie medicine and his love for his patients, or he is forced to by some unforeseen circumstances.

Once this very big elephant in the room is addressed and tackled first, then maybe we can move onto the next phase of his possible romance.

Not feeling the supposed romance between Gyeo Wool and Jeong Won aside, I am loving the their dynamic as a mentor and an apprentice.

It shows how Gyeo Wool has slowly learned from Jeong Won being being under him. He reprimanded her when she went overboard with the guardian, in private. When doing so, he asked her is that how a 3rd year resident should be talking to a traumatic parent - this prompted her to think of her own wrongs. When she was defensive of her ways, he didn't bother to argue back that she is wrong.

Other than not giving praises when she did nothing commendable, he also let her formulate on her own why he is not happy with her actions - rightly so, she is not a school kid that needs to be guided from A to Z, but an already 3rd year resident who should've had the ability of critical thinking, to reflect on her wrongs and formulate her thinking on her own. This is the same for the abusive parent chase situation - she on her own reflected her miscalculation from before, knowing not to behave as reckless with the liver delivery.

Her being in the GS and the "fathers" who coddled her and treated her like a princess made her not realise how lacking she is as a resident. They didn't mentor her objectively because they just want to be on her good side so that she will assist them. So her being under Jeong Won seems to be a good influence on her growth as a doctor.

Anyhow, I am still hoping the writer will get to convince me and made me fall for JW x GW for the romance part later. I am pretty sure Jeong Won said yes to her request for dinner because she was not mopey or pouty and even kicked her feet at the end of the episode. Such display of kicking reaction and no presence of her usual mopey look, pouts and verge of tears like she always did when it comes to Jeong Won, I'm pretty sure he said yes and they will have their dinner on the weekend.

That's an excellent point on GW's lack of objective mentorship in her own department. JW is a good influence on her professionally .
But what I love about her is how she seems to have taken those lessons to heart without any ego. Yes, she doesn't have the best bedside manners, and isn't ms.warm and fuzzy, but she is always ready to do whatever it takes for the best of her patients. And I think that JW at the very least respects her for her work ethic. Now romance is definitely a murky area but I am so rooting for the girl to atleast get one solid(consentual, ofc) date out of JW.

Her personality of not being so warm to everyone is nothing wrong because that is how she is and so long as it doesn't affect how she carries her job and treat the patients and guardians, then it is all great.

What matters is how she is on the job - she didn't only lack bedside manners, she was also slow on the uptakes, slow to perceive and connecting dots, a bit reckless and often make miscalculations. She is actually not always ready to do the best of the patient - she told Jeong Won to just give up when the size of the liver is big. But I am glad she is slowly improving in all of those.

Jeong Won is warming up to her as compared to previously where he didn't think her style of work matches him. Maybe later as she improves more and more professionally, only then she will earn Jeong Won's respect and he'll not hold back with the praises she would deserve.

Nice to see that I’m not the only one who thinks this way! Up till now I feel like the purpose of having Jungwon-Kyuwool line is to show how Kyuwool would grow to become a better doctor. Right from the first Jungwon-Kyuwool scene, what’s obvious to me is that the writer wanted to highlight this and uses Joonhee as a contrast.

If anyone also realised, the writer/ director made the effort to replicate Jungwon’s emergency scene with Kyuwool vs Joonhee right from the time Jungwon parked his car and they made him wear exactly the same outfit (even more contrast that both happened on the same day) in episode 3, and on the child-abuse case in episode 5 they presented us with twin patients, one handled by Joonhee (who did everything correctly without being told by the professors) and the other one handled by Kyuwool (who didn’t act on Jungwon’s instructions and did all the wrong thing instead).

On the “romance” part, I’m not sure if Kyuwool’s crush on Jungwon would fall under the romance category. At least until now. What I see is Kyuwool totally fan-girling Jungwon, probably just like how she idolises BTS (now that we know she’s an ARMY, haha). In the scene we first knew that Kyuwool likes someone, she declared that she’s happy just to see his photos.

She collected photos and informations on Jungwon from Ikjoon and Dr Bong and that’s pretty much it. Yes, she said she has changed, that she now communicates nicely to the patients’ guardians and she didn’t anyhow run while carrying on her duty. But why does it feel like she changed her behaviour to look good before Jungwon?! Because she self-explained that while Jungwon didn’t even ask or doubt her anything? Hhhm.

Her latest move on asking Jungwon to a one-to-one weekend dinner also felt rather meaningless to me. It’s like now she knows that Jungwon does some sort of fan-service to anyone who requested it, so here we go, I can’t miss this I’m gonna ask him now. It kinda lacks something..

We weren’t shown why Chihong likes Songhwa, same like how we weren’t told why Kyuwool likes Jungwon (she already likes him even before we were shown the first Jungwon-Kyuwool scene - In episode 2 at the end of the battle between professors to get Kyuwool’s favour, Ikjoon already said to her if he should call Jungwon to come).

Chihong’s actions clearly speak for his heart. He came to the camping ground on a rainy day, he gave Songhwa a new pair of shoes, or even just by bringing her favourite drink, coffee. Everything kinda shows his care for her, that he observes her and he knows what she likes or needs and he tries to be involved in things that she likes. Not sure if I missed anything, but so far what I saw was just Kyuwool trying hard to quench her own thirst on Jungwon. No real care, admiration or whatsoever given to Jungwon.

Nothing clicks yet and I’m still waiting how the writer brings out the romance story for Jungwon, if there’s any.

I don't think she likes him before ep. 2 - I think that line was said as a prelude to what would happen later. But then the possibility of it is also there.

But yes to the Gyeo Wool and Jun Hui contrast so I also think they intended to make GW has her growth as a doctor under Jeong Won from the establishment of their pairing. A pairing intended for her professional growth, not necessarily romantic.

She is a fangirl of Jeong Won and she idolises him, she definitely did. Like you said, the way she carry her crush is also like how fans fangirl over their idols - saving photos, snoop for information from sources/reporters (? Ik Jun and Dr
Bong 😂), wanting praises, validation and recognisation from their idols, getting a snack fanservice is enough to make them stunned, a single ^^ smiley text would make them jump over the moon and thinking their idols love them. It's fangirling behaviour to the t. Here it establishes her maturity level with regards to her crush. She is easily affected even from the smallest thing when it comes to JW, like how a fangirl would.

It's different from the way Chi Hong acting with his crush (as how you put it so well above and I agree) and also Min Ha. Min Ha is always shown to be next to Seok Hyeong when he imparts his wisdom and warmth to the patients and we see her expressions every time Seok Hyeong being awesome. She fell for his brilliant wisdom and warmth. And she, like Chi Hong, also made proactive moves to establish emotional connection with him - chatting and having meal together, ask him things she is curious about and that powerful holding down the perilla leaves move 😂

Whereas GW are void of all those things Chi Hong and Min Ha did. I would be seriously puzzled if they're established as a romantic couple faster than Chi Hong and Min Ha, especially when his priesthood matter not yet resolved and that right now there is no emotional connection established between them. At all.

I hope the writer will make it logical and convince me. But I am not putting much hope for that. Lol.

I have been an avid reader of this site for years and have been trying to register for ages but only just got the format for registration (thank you Father). I am so excited to FINALLY be able to comment on my favorite shows ☺️

I was in a drama slump before coming across Hospital Playlist and now adore it completely,oh how i wish it was two episodes per week but one's gotta make do with what one's got. Every new episode becomes my favorite and this is no exception, plus it made me like Min Ha more than i thought i could. The scene where she was doing her job while the other doctor just sat there and made unnecessary conversation with the patient annoyed me so much,i was proud of her when she called her attention to the work needed to be done.

At this point,i have given up on the romance and will make do with Ik Soon and Joon Wan. Gyeo-Ul my darling, you will be alright.

Welcome @yemyem. 💯 agree with you on the show.
The other ob-gyn doc(I'm assuming she's the fox) drove me nuts as well. And then the guardian's judgemental/petty "you must be busy" line to poor Dr. Min ah who was only just trying to get her colleague to do her job ..argghh.. the show has shown us many times the optics/bedside manners of the doc doesn't necessarily mean that they are better at their job. We saw it in the showy professor in the first EPs who was all honey dripping in front of the patients but would endanger the life of a patient just for the sake keeping face. Although the fox Doc's infraction isn't as severe, it is a good reminder of how you shouldn't let complacency/need for approval or love get in the way of duty.it's a lesson that many of us need to be reminded of periodically.

This series is the highlight of my quarantine life. Every week i look forward to the new episode.
As expected from the Reply Series Pd and writer team they are doing a fabulous job. I am in love with the characters . Their friendship is really precious and nostalgic.
Ik joons revelation of him being ashamed and then coming to terms with it that he is just wasting time will be relatable to so many

Jun wan and Ik soon are so adorable. But they became a couple very early , hopefully nothing happens to them. We still don't know about ik soons past

Feeling like song hwa relationship will not have any definite progress in this season. They will just hint at it nd probably leave with a big cliffhanger.

Totally shipping Jung Won and Gyu Wool. Unless the writer gives a twist and makes him gay , i think it will sail but nothing can be said from this writer.

And plz dont make Jae Hak Suffer. He worked so hard to save the money and get a house.

Regarding Jun Wan and Ik soon, yupp years of drama watching have made be suspicious of couples getting together very early on. Let's hope no matter what, they remain together throughout the seasons!

The fox and bear is actually an analogy in popular Korean culture. It describes two different types of women, usually in the context of pursuing men. The fox is cunning: they are good at flirting but they are less genuine with people. The bear is diligent: they spend a lot of effort trying to do things for that one guy that they are attracted to. In this context, it accurately describes Eunwon and Minha, both when it comes to them trying to get Seokhyung's attention and how they brwork as well.

Thanks for the recap @lovepark. This show just keep getting better and better♥️
There were soo many good moments last week.
*The highlight has got to be THE car scene: JW's slightly indulgent tone while talking to Song Hwa Vs full-volume yelling at the other 3 dumbos is just soo epic.
Speaking of dumbos, the backseat glaring and their shocked silent mouthing of "oppa" when JW slipped up.😘
Also can we somehow make Jung won referring to Joon wan as "ahh, oppa" in that slightly nauseating tone a regular thing, writernim??
Ik Jun's phone manners are impeccable while talking to his friend's supposed GF. Seok Hyung's agitated questions on how they met and him faithfully relaying the fresh goss that JW seems to have a gf to his unsuspecting omma, named Bi Dulgi..bi as in Rain?? 😂😂😂
But the icing was how little song hwa cared about all of these shenanigans..poor girls was just annoyed that she didn't get to play their practice song 👏👏👏

Other faves:
*Woo Ju saving the last cookie for his appa 😭 and that would mean so much more that night to IJ as he has just relived his divorce trauma to help a patient out of her life rut.
*My appreciation for Cap. Ahn just shot up after hearing about his survival and endurance. I also adore how easily SH and him interact despite having had the 'feelings talk'. She is a great teacher and he is a worthy student. I almost don't want those pesky feelings to spring up between them. Btw I liked how perceptive he is , he seems to have sensed the special connection IJ and SH have.the moment he heard SH was campus couple,he nodded his head understandingly and stated it was obviously with IJ.
*GW and Min ah are ARMY.😁 Y am I not surprised .
*Return of the twins: I really enjoy having these two around as stand ins for us viewers. The girl already seen to have her heart set on joining romantic Dr.Ik Jun. I guess Joon won can have the PBG look alike boy twin?
*I loorved JW's frozen reaction to GW's violent disappointment of him not being Jung won. Don't take it to heart,JW..there are many of us who would whoop of joy if you ever walked in to our places at lunch(or bfast ,or dinner, you know what .any time that works for you is fine♥️)
*My heart is breaking for Jae-hak. Please don't let their hard earned money be lost to a con artist, show 😧

This is the first time I teared up while the band was playing. All those precious relationships (Woo-joo's cookies for her dad!! Who wouldn't cry watching that? Ik-joon is one lucky guy.) and all those kindness you got from the most unexpected people (that Reply 1988 cameo was perfect). This eps made my heart full, and I couldn't be happier.

Just like what @lovepark said last week, this writer-director team is the best at drawing out moments and turned it around on its head to punch us in the gut. Chi-hong's backstory was a perfect example of that. We've seen it being the topic of interest and many speculations between his colleagues and superior. We've seen him laughingly waved it away as something inconsequential. Then come that operation scene this eps. His unexpected confession in front of everyone and the parallel he drew to cheer his patient up was very well done. I love the way Song-hwa calmly and half-jokingly redirected everyone's attention and mood before it turned too sappy. Her frank and empathetic conversation with Chi-hong afterwards was just the right scene to keep me shipping for this potential couple. Or am I too naive for wanting that??

On the other hand, we have another unexpected resident-professor dynamic between Jae-hak and Jun-wan. Isn't it amazing that someone as heodang and a bit brazen as Jae-hak actually became Junwan's favorite resident? Just look at how he could mock-scold his legendary satan-like professor without the said professor going to blow up at him. Heh. Jun-wan is a secret marshmallow inside and Jae-hak is probably one of the few people outside Jun-wan's close friends who understand that.

To say this is a wonderful show would be saying the obvious. But I wanted to add that what makes this show special is that it is in fact going nowhere, and it's a great even with this lack of direction. I'm not a big fan of any of the actors, didn't especially love the Reply series, and certainly don't like medical dramas. Despite all this, I find myself eagerly waiting for Thursday evenings.

Many ships are sailing, and of course, I have my preference (which is not anywhere near the top 5 ships even!), but that is not the focus of my attention. I just find myself wanting to have that weekly glimpse into the lives of these five friends and their satellites and extended families and friends.

They seem more real than a lot of the characters in other dramas, and their friendship resonates with my own little group of university friends, as it probably does with yours too. There's the wise one, the cool one, the dorky one, the quirky one, the quiet one.... A strange chemistry binds friends together in real life. And this show has figured out that formula just right. Maybe this is what makes it such a compelling watch.

I'm dreading the prospect of this first season ending in 4 episodes, but am also relieved to know they'll be returning sometime again, although I will probably have killed the replay button with the countless reruns of the first 12 eps I will have watched by then!

I work in a hospital and I see patients and their families showing kindness and love to other patients all the time. It's one of my favorite things about my job. I'm glad this show is showing that too. Those little actions, such as sharing food can have a big impact on someone who is struggling. It's what makes this drama feel very human and real to me.

I never posted any comment on the internet but i'll make exemption for this show. Words cannot describe how much i love it. They don't need some complicated plot to draw the viewers in and i think that is the charm of this drama. My favourite character would be our dr gyeoul. Even though i saw that some people don't like her due to her coldness but nobody's perfect. I don't agree when some said that she change just to look good in front of jeong won. Despite her cold and indifferent personality we can see her passion and hard work in being a dr. Like in earlier eps on how she pick up the maggots with bare hand while the other dr is disgusted. This shows that she is hard working way before she started to like jeong won. Yes dr bae jun hui is great in handling the patient but you must not forget that she is an ER fellow while gyeoul is just a third year general surgery resident. She still lack of experience to compare with dr bae jun hui. For the comment pointing out that said why did she felt the need to explain herself to jeong won when he didn't said anything, it is to show on how she learned from her mistake and improve. For the romance part, everyone can relate with her having a crush on a nice, handsome and somewhat rich superior but for they to start dating i dont even know if its possible cause jeong won had his own dilemma to deal with before he can start to think about love. But if they do end up together i am looking forward on how they work out the relationship cause their personality is like a complete opposite of each other. This gyeoulxjeongwon ship is quite popular now and like other people said most popular ship won't end up together in shin pd drama but we haven't reached the end yet so we let just see how this drama is going.

I immediately noticed that later when the other OB resident was on the phone with Seok Hyung, she was repeating the management plans Min Ha has already made for the patient. So basically she was taking credit for MinHa’s work, which as a fellow resident, is actually so annoying and real. This show really fleshes out the different types of people within the hospital. From the new head NS who took credit for Song Hwa’s surgery, this OB, and the many doctors who all communicate and work differently.

Started this journey for JJS and JKH (and PD Shin) but have stayed for the entire kit caboodle. It's a constant miracle that this show manages to be funny, witty, heartwarming and weepy all in a single episode. Love it to death.

Because I have been a fan of Dr Winter Maggot from the start, I adopted the Winter Garden dynamic very early on. It occurred to me right from the start that the show was doing something interesting with this unlikely pairing. It's a story that the show really wanted to tell although it wasn't always entirely clear to me what it was trying to do with it. But nothing that I saw ever deterred me from having hopes for this pairing. On some level it's not an easy pairing to sell, I don't think but judging from its popularity, perhaps the writer has exceeded herself. From a writing perspective it is a challenge: A socially amicable pediatrician with priestly aspirations and a socially awkward resident with a penchant for unwholesome carbs. A slowburn is to be expected. If it does set sail, I will be on board with bells on.

Even though Jeong-won has priestly aspirations , I remain largely unconvinced that he will end up the way of his older siblings. The priesthood is his dream, we're told... his holy grail perhaps... but from everything I've seen, his true passion is medicine. His wiser oldest brother knows that too which is why he consistently discourages him from pursuing this path.

My perspective regarding JW is different. The question that nags me constantly is why he hasn't done anything seriously with the priesthood issue in the past 20 years. But suddenly after a startling encounter with a certain Dr Long Winter picking off maggots, he kicks start the process and the paperwork. Was there something about that event that shook his complacency? Something changed in him that day. The timing is interesting.

Another point. Everyone assumes that a woman crushing on JW is in competition with God. What if there is no "competition" or "rivalry"? Why has no one, including JW seen this as a challenge to his own sense of certainty about where his future is headed? Why can't it be God saying to JW that the priesthood isn't for him? I certainly think the implications are possible.

From my perspective, the priesthood for JW is about family and his identification with his siblings. But really his heart in is medicine and there's really nothing wrong about that. Besides he already has another family... his best friends and there's no reason why he can't make another one of his own with someone he likes. ;)

Not only does God work in mysterious ways, Mom knows her kid, perhaps better than he knows himself -- which is why she's kicking up such a fuss at him. I just got a hilarious vision of the rest of the family making novenas and wearing out their rosaries praying for his enlightenment. LOL!

You raise excellent points about why he's been dragging his feet for so long if he really is so gung-ho for the priesthood. The timing of his renewed interest in it is indeed suspicious.

He has planned to quit as a doctor and kickstarted the paperwork for priesthood way earlier than that. The recommendation letter was dated 3rd March 2019, and that was before ep. 1 timeline (since ep. 1 started around mid March 2019) - so he already kickstarted the procedure way before March 2019. He already called Song Hwa to pass over the Daddy Long Legs program in ep. 1 but it was probably halted because of his father's passing.

The picking off maggots incident happened in late April 2019.

In episode 1, there was a March calendar hanging on the wall of Song Hwa's consultation room. While the start of episode 1 was not dated specifically, but the first specific date - March 14, 2019 was first seen when Song Hwa received the text message dated so, informing the death of Jeong Won's father as he did not make it from the surgery. So episode 1 began around mid March or just a few days before that.

I'll have to rejig one or two assumptions but it doesn't change what I think overall about the WinterGarden dynamic.

I love this show so much, the thought of having many seasons gives me a certain kind of comfort.

But why is everyone calling Yeon Seok's character "Andrea"?

I hate how sly eun won is.she is basically repeating the order that been given by min ha to the nurse to suk hyung (make it as if that is her suggestion) to make good impression.ergghh I hate leeching off collegue (I experienced facing one before).I hope min ha can stay strong.I love her!she is direct and straightforward, and really responsible despite how she appears.
So far I love how they fleshed out supporting characters in this drama.the five friends are of course the highlight of the show, and so far I am waiting patiently for the backstory of each characters, but I seriously don't care who ended up with who because I just love their friendship. (Well...maybe I do hope jung won will eventually end up with gyeo ul).

I don't think Dad was surprised that he was at the hospital his son worked at, as that is par for the course with him, he was surprised to learn about the pregnancy.

And with the way she was taking down that lobster with him, I wonder.

Thanks for the recap! How old is SunYoung's daughter Jin-Joo in Reply 1988? If she was born in 1983 or 1984, she would be 37 or 36 in 2020 so old enough to date Darth Vader Daddy?

Are the 5 Hospital Playlist doctors age 40 in Korean years or in international age? If so, it means they were born in either 1980 (Korean age) or 1981 (international age)?

So the 5 doctors would be the exact same age as the main characters in Reply 1997 who must have been born in either 1980/1981 (korean age/international age?

Just trying to figure out the timelines!
