[Staff Spotlight] Get to know stroopwafel

The Dramabeans team is growing, and we thought this would be a nice time to revisit the Staff Spotlight series. It’s a way for Beanies to get to know us a little better as the people behind the posts.

Each of us new minions will get their turn in the spotlight, and though I’d like to hiss and back away into the darkness like an old-timey vampire, I’ll go first!

Explain your username (and/or avatar).

I wish I had an epic story behind my username, but alas, I just really love stroopwafels. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re a Dutch cookie that’s a syrup sandwich. As for my avatar, Kim Tae-ri is one of my favorite actresses.

What is the first drama that you watched (or the first drama that made an impression)?

The first drama to really grab me was Boys Before Flowers. Those curls! Violin Sunbae! It was almost paradise a glorious tangle of energy and chaos and fun. I don’t think I could ever re-watch it now, for various reasons, but it will always have a special place in my heart.

Tell us about a job or two that you’ve had in the past.

I once worked as Korean to English translator.

Have you ever lived a moment that you thought belonged in a drama?

I had a brush with a Sedan of Doom in college. I was about to cross the street when a car ran a red light and zoomed past, missing me by a margin of inches. If a dreamy young man had swept me out of the way, it could have been the start of a youth romance.

What drama genres do you especially like?

I gravitate towards certain genres, like slice-of-life and comedies, but I don’t have any particular one that’s a favorite.

What drama genres do you especially dislike?

Nothing really, I’ll give almost anything at least a try but I tend to give up quickly on anything involving the supernatural.

Is there a drama character you’ve ever strongly identified with, and why?

Go Dok-mi is a character I’ve never let go of, even after all these years. As an introvert, seeing her quiet solitude and struggles with stepping out into the world resonated with me. She also had my dream job and dream winter wardrobe at the time.

What was your major in school?

Sociology and anthropology.

What’s a random skill you have?

I can fold tiny, tiny origami cranes. The smallest ones I’ve ever folded have a 1 cm wingspan.

Favorite non-Korean movie and/or TV show?

Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Westworld, and Hot Fuzz.

Which Hallyu celebrity would you actually want to meet and spend an hour with?

Na PD! I’d love to pick his brain about his editing methods and the behind-the-scenes aspect of pulling together a show.

Your favorite drama has an unholy alliance with your most hated drama and produces a mutant baby drama. Describe the plot.

A variety show PD named Ra Dong-chan and a part-timer are cryogenically frozen together as part of a new variety show. They’re accidentally left frozen for twenty years and when they melt, the first thing they do (after reuniting with their loved ones) is seek out the best medical researchers Korea has to offer. Ra PD documents their healing process and turns it into a hit variety show with his once part-timer, now assistant director. A star documentary director develops an interest in their show and she introduces them to her best friends, a drama writer and a marketing strategist. They decide to join forces to produce a drama that’s based on their frozen tale. It’s critically acclaimed hit and the show’s ice chamber PPL leads to the start of a new freezing trend in Korea. Fin.

Oh hi there @stroopwafel <3 I love that we share the same kinship toward Go Dok-mi. And now I wonder if your Dramabeans editor desk looks anything like hers did... ;)

Oh, a minion who hasn't yet posted a get-to-know-me makes her presence known in a get-to-know-me thread. After I said I was looking forward to more. This is just too easy :)

Hi stroopwafel! I also love stroopwafels (the biscuit) and every time I see your name on articles I have this Pavlovian response of “I should see if they have any of those next time I’m at the supermarket” 😂 ....they’re a specialty item here so they hardly ever do. Life is full of trials 😅

I’d love to spend an hour with Na PD too, love how simple and slice-of-life his variety shows are. Nothing over-the-top, but so heartwarming and therapeutic, least to say entertaining!

I’m glad this is being revived heh, would love to read more about the DB staff :)

1cm wingspan!? That's so impressive! Like many Beanies out there, I'm now in dire need of stroopwafels myself

Your unholy mutant baby drama though... 😂😂😂😂😂😂

(A bunch of beanies did this questionnaire a while back and I always hated that last q. The very thought of mine makes me want to scream and set something on fire)

So, anything since then to change your answer to the last question?

Is there a permalink to your original answer? Just curious...

If I did originally post this myself, I can't find it.
My most hated drama has changed from two years ago, thus the answer to the question has also changed, if only in that the mutant drama is even MORE horrific to think about.
I could just post my answer to this whole questionnaire if you want. Actually I'm bored. Let's do that.

Hum... so your favourite and the most hated dramas are Be Melodramatic and Melting Soflty? Or the opposite ? :p

I never knew stroopwafels existed before @stroopwafel became editor. They're basically a waffle cookie (yum!) sandwich with caramel in the middle (double yum!). After I found out what they were, I found them in the store and about once a month make myself sick by eating too many of them at once. You should try one!

"If a dreamy young man had swept me out of the way, it could have been the start of a youth romance."

In most scenarios involving vehicles of doom, the dreamy young man would probably push you out of the way. Turning his face toward the direction of the vehicle that continues along its course, we would watch in slow motion--perhaps with some dramatic music in the background--as our dreamy young man is struck without mercy. He might still survive and we might get another subplot involving amnesia or cancer.

Unfortunately I had watched TW & JP versions of Boy Over Flowers far too many times to be hooked by the "almost paradise".

Thanks for this, stroopwafel! I made a whole bunch of origami cranes once for I don't know what reason a long time ago, and I still find them randomly around the house occasionally. 🤷‍♀️
