Convenience store mayhem in SBS rom-com Backstreet Rookie

With the premiere just a few weeks away, new promo has been released for SBS drama Backstreet Rookie (formerly Convenience Store Saet-byul), including new stills and a video teaser.

The rom-com stars Ji Chang-wook (Melting Me Softly) as a dorky store manager who works at a 24-hour convenience store. Although the long hours are tiring, his life is relatively peaceful. But everything becomes topsy-turvy when the peppy and quirky Kim Yoo-jung (Clean With Passion for Now) starts working with him at the store as the new part-timer.

The newly released stills feature Kim Yoo-jung, who was interviewed on why she was drawn to her character in Backstreet Rookie. She explained that her character is very clear about what she likes and doesn’t likes, has a fiery personality, and works hard to improve herself and do her best. Kim Yoo-jung also spoke about how much fun she’s been having while shooting. The role requires a lot of physicality and she enrolled in action school for the first time in her career to help prepare for the scenes.

The teaser features both lead actors and begins with several neon text screens that announce: “Finally,” “June 19 at 10 p.m.,” and “24-hours non-stop / Comedy house / Open.” We get a peek at Kim Yoo-jung and Ji Chang-wook’s fateful first meeting and Kim asks, “I can start working tomorrow, right?” In a sequence of shots, we are shown what transpires afterwards.

A customer throws money on the counter and Kim Yoo-jung tries to get his attention. Cut to Ji Chang-wook bowing apologetically at a police station while an upset Kim sits with her back turned. We hear the phone call Ji received in voice-over, “Jung Saet-byul got into an argument with a customer and she is now at the police station.” In another scene, a police officer reprimands Kim Yoo-jung and Ji Chang-wook at the convenience store, “How could you sell cigarettes to someone underage?” All the while, Kim and Ji look at each other in surprise.

It cuts to a distressed Ji Chang-wook watching Kim Yoo-jung through the convenience store’s glass doors. He thinks, “I should have fired her once and for all. She’s like an exploding bomb.” And we see Ji with Kim as well as two other girls, tipsy with alcohol, and dancing in the streets. Captions appear, questioning their relationship: ” Unforeseable romance?” And the teaser comes to a close with Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung getting up excitedly in a hug and the two share a charged moment.

Writing for the drama is Sohn Geun-joo and directing will be helmed by PD Lee Myung-woo (The Fiery Priest).

Airing Fridays and Saturdays on SBS, Backstreet Rookie is currently set to premiere on June 19 following The King: Eternal Monarch.

This is the most anticopated romantic comedy of the Year.
The Leads chemistry is very evident. Actually, Im already shipping them I hope that they date in real life.. I cant see the "age gap" Ji chang wook looks very young- same age with Kim Yoo Jung.
This drama will be a ratings Hit. another hit for SBS.

12 years seem too much of an age gap, esp given she's only 20 years old. seriously, people, that's gross. he looks like her samchon. if he were a woman and she a man, all headlines would be about the age gap and it would be a huge deal. the hypocrisy is astounding.

I know this is random, but I get so sad whenever dramabeans adopts the English title of a drama instead of keeping a translation of the Korean one. It's not really "formerly Convenience Store Saet-Byul", the drama is still called that. It's just that some executive has decided that the Englisch speaking world needs a more natural Englisch sounding title, a thought, which I firmly reject. I like the original names, I wish, this site would just keep them.

I agree that sometimes the Korean titles are better (and sometimes not--see Psycho But It's Okay vs It's Okay to Not Be Okay) but using the "official" English titles makes it easier to find content about the drama, so I totally understand why they choose to do it.

This English title doesn't make much sense though you're right, lol.

hope there wouldnt be so much kissing scenes. that would be ewwwww. Just like in Clean with passion. i think Yoo jung at the age of 20 has the most kissing scenes in her drama. i hope they will not take advantage of her.

what are her parents doing? she should be in a university just like Kim so hyun.

@xina8,
As of today BR is not on Viki’s “Coming Soon” list but interestingly JCW’s EMPRESS KI (2013/14) is on the list.
All part of the strange world of kdrama availability.

1

I am beginning to wonder if SBS’s BACKSTREET ROOKIE will only be available subbed on iQIYI like MBC’S DINNER MATE.
MBC along with SBS and KBS created Kocowa. DINNER MATE is not available on Kocowa.
The wiki page for BR says “It is an iQIYI original series...”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backstreet_Rookie
I am sure I won’t be watching BR if it is only available on iQYI.

I have enough with the age gap on Clean With Passion for Now and now this?!! Seriously, she's 20 years old and there's bunch of younger amazing actor there. I don't mind she paired with Bo Gum again or Jin Goo again. All the kisses in Clean With Passion for Now makes me cringe and thinking about the age, my heart is not ready for what will happen in here.

This is one true pairing for me! I’m so happy that the director makes this pair come true. JCW and KYJ are so visually compatible. They are great in acting! They look so gorgeous, and both have beautiful eyes and smile. I truly can’t expect more than that! The chemistry of the 2 main leads is very important, and I’ve found that their chemistry is overflowing in the poster making video. This is my honest thinking because I didn’t have the same feeling for JCW’s female partners in some of his past few projects, so this drama is very promising and exciting to me! JCW doesn’t look too old; he looks pure, cute, fresh and innocent enough to pair with the young KYJ. Probably watching some short teasers couldn’t give you a lot of impression now, but the teasers don’t really represent the quality of a whole drama. It’s too early to judge a book by its cover. Be positive, open-minded for whatever that is coming. There are some negative comments here about this pairing, and you have the freedom of speech to express your real thoughts. However, don’t make yourself look like an anti-fan by heavy bashing words, araso? There are some projects, people, actor or actress, singers that I don’t like, but I always keep it to myself all the negative thoughts about them, and I’ve never posted my bad thoughts about someone or something in public social media to drag them down. I only do constructive criticism to make the world better ;) . Success of a drama sometimes depends on luck. I can only wish my beloved actor and actress the best of luck now! The webtoon is popular because it’s interesting and has good story. If you’re curious, you can look it up and read “She’s too much for me” manhwa (it’s the English title they translated). Maybe you will it interesting too. :)

The PD is definitely a plus point but everything else is very dated looking. Also, neither Yoo Jung nor JCW lately have struck gold with their choice...I hope this turns out different than those. I will definitely check it out on first week and see if its worth keeping up with.

Suddenly I have had a thought: Wookie wants to do comedy. That's why he has chosen these projects: melty and this one. He honestly thinks he can do comedy, he has at least to try....
Now the result: will be solidified here.
If this is a second Melty, boy you can give up and come back to make action and thrillers and very serious dramas where your characters are even tragic.
That's it!!! 🤔

But I am afraid this one won't be good 😩

Did you see SP? His comedy was good in that. Plus, in Empress Ki he was comedic in the beginning.

But generally speaking, comedy requires minuet attention to expressions, etc. But like other forms of acting, it can harnessed over time (for most).

I really want Wookie to do intense dramas.

To the people complaining about the age gap, who's forcing you to watch the drama?! If you don't like it, stop following these threads. If you do watch it, then you're just a hypocrite. Lol. Btw, there have been many actresses who have paired with and even dated older guys in real life, such as IU. I bet if Kim Yoo Jung was 30 and Ji Chang Wook was 42, people wouldn't say shit. Get over yourselves! These actors don't live for you and their choices certainly have nothing to do with your preferences. They're both PROFESSIONAL actors who have been in the industry for a long time, and at the end of the day, they're only acting. If it bothers you that much, don't watch it! Lol. Go find a drama where both the actors are exactly the same age so you can get off on that instead. That's all, byeee! :)
