Double the Yoon Shi-yoon in latest teaser for OCN’s Train

A new video teaser has been released for OCN’s new fantasy mystery Train, featuring lead actor Yoon Shi-yoon (Psychopath Diary).

The story is centered around a serial murder case and an incident that took place one fateful night. A crucial decision was made in that moment and it creates a crossroads between two parallel worlds as a consequence.

Yoon Shi-yoon stars in the drama as police officer Seo Do-won, who is a team lead in the violent crimes unit. Hardworking and dedicated to his job, he puts his whole self into capturing criminals. He does his best to do good deeds and make up for the crimes committed by his father. In the parallel reality, however, he discovers a different version of himself. Although still a police officer, his alternate has chosen a life of corruption and danger due to his father’s crimes.

The new video teaser focuses on Yoon Shi-yoon’s two characters and it starts with a hooded figure standing near train tracks in the rain. We hear Yoon in voice-over, “In this world, there is another me.” There are brief shots showing the different appearances of the same church building in the two worlds before cutting back to Yoon. He speaks to someone off-screen, “Do you not know who I am?”

As a clock ticks loudly in the background, there is a sequence of shots showing the two Yoon Shi-yoon’s in split-screen as they search for clues. On the left side, the scenes are filtered in warm colors. In contrast, the right side is colored in cooler tones.

In the closing shots, each character stands by the same train tracks in their respective worlds. Captions describe the left Yoon as, “the police officer who chose a life of atonement.” The right side reads: “the police officer who chose a path of corruption.” As the video comes to a close, the caption changes to: “Mystery of parallel worlds.” And Yoon repeats it in voice-over, “A mystery of parallel worlds. Train.”

Will parallel worlds be the new dramaland trend? Though it wasn’t a parallel world, Yoon Shi-yoon did an impressive job in Psychopath Diary doubling up on roles as two characters on opposite ends of the personality spectrum so it will be interesting to see how he handles a role that straddles two worlds.

Writing for the drama is Park Ga-yeon and directing will done collaboratively by PDs Lee Seung-hoon and Ryu Seung-jin (Crazy Waiting). OCN’s mystery drama Train is currently set to air next month, in July.

@laurawaterhouse On the other hand, I've tried to give him a chance on everything he's done since, but still when I watch him act I just see that - acting a role, not being that character.

Torn between two reactions: (1) Great, a potentially well-executed parallel world premise which will hopefully cleanse my palate after the hugely disappointing "King: Eternal Monarch" or (2) "King" was so bad I have given up the sub-genre altogether and I wish YSY will make another melo like "Baker King"...

If it makes you feel any better, @wishfultoki, I'll be tuning in despite my exasperation with ever-popular (not!) serial murders. As long as there is no derailment...

There, there.

*pats back*

There's a limit to human endurance, especially when serial killers or parallel universes are involved. I'll give TRAIN a shot and see how it goes. I purposely avoided becoming emotionally invested in TK:EM because I suspected it would be visually pleasing and logically frustrating, and my horse sense saved my bacon.

I'm cautiously optimistic that TRAIN will do a better job of establishing the reasons for the differences between the doubles than YOUR HONOR did for the pair of twins and their obnoxious mother. Hope springs eternal. Or maybe I'm just delusional after all. ;-)

Thank you for the progress report, @tccolb. Based on TEAM BULLDOG's end date of Sun., June 28, per AsianWiki, we can anticipate the premiere on Sat., July 4 @2250 KST. That ought to make for a fun Independence Day for Beanies in the US.

I agree that the latest Kdrama fad seems to be parallel worlds -- with a side of mandatory serial murder. It sounds like a mash-up of COME HERE AND HUG ME and TOMORROW WITH YOU, except that no time travel is involved. The train tracks in the poster remind me of LIFE ON MARS. ;-)

I'll be tuning in for YSY with bells on. Thank you, Stylist-nim, for decent hair for Dong-gu this time around. I hate to say that he looked like a poodle in PSYCHO DIARY.

A cute lovable poodle. PSYCHO DIARY is one of the two "cereal murder" dramas I've managed to finish, along with GIRL WHO SEES SMELLS, neither of which are the gritty kind of OCN drama. I really liked LIFE ON MARS, but I didn't have the guts to keep watching beyond episode 5.

@wishfultoki,
I loved LIFE ON MARS to bits. If TRAIN has a team of cops like the original foursome and their transferee from Seoul, I'll be happy as a clam.
Noh Jong-hyun, who played Corporal Jo Nam-shik in LIFE ON MARS, is currently portraying marketing & sales intern Joo Yoon-soo in KKONDAE INTERN / OLD SCHOOL INTERN. I'm enjoying his performance a lot. Poor dear is probably in the wrong job, but he's lucky to have a job at all, and soldiers on amidst the corporate mayhem and executive malfeasance.

I will of course be with joining you @pakalanapikake for Yoon Shi-yoon’s TRAIN. First off his hair looks great. No PD issue there.
I am starting to get into the groove and enjoy OCN’s TEAM BULLDOG so upon completion I will be sliding to TRAIN. I hope I can keep the parallel universes separate because sometimes in THE KING (which I actually enjoyed) I wasn’t sure where I was.
I love the idea of YSY as a Team Leader but when I went to check out the cast list more in depth to see who might be on his team I found it a bit strange that all the usual sites list only 7 cast members. Lol with 2 universes there will certainly have to be a larger cast than that.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,
I knew you'd check in sooner or later. Fingers crossed that TRAIN is a good drama, and that we don't go nuts trying to figure out which universe we're in. Thankfully, it looks as if TRAIN is going to clue us in with color cues. TK:EM confused me more than once with all those doppelgaengers crossing back and forth through the Dead Zone. For the record, I enjoyed TK:EM, although the ending was kind of flat. Perhaps it would have felt less anticlimactic if it had aired the next day instead of nearly a week after ep. 15.

*shakes fist at preemption that killed the cliffhanger rhythm*

I've noticed that some shows have skimpy cast listings on AsianWiki until literally right before it airs. A recent development has been sorting the characters out by family, company, and other groupings. (Sometimes it doesn't happen for the first couple of episodes.) It makes it much more convenient to recall how they're related. DramaWiki often spells out the relationships in their cast listings.

Dang, DramaWiki's cast info is even skimpier than AsianWiki's.

Hi @pakalanapikake,
1. Re TK: EM you pretty much express my feelings. I just went along with the flow and enjoyed it. Sometimes I wasn't sure what universe I was in probably missed many clues but that's how it was.
Interestingly in regards to "The Kingdom" I just came across this news/maybe society item from 2018. You may have caught it at the time. Only in America:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/12/29/californian-techie-becomes-korean-crown-prince-fairytale-twist/

2. Remember back in 2018 how we were trying to keep track of all the sageuks coming in 2019?
Well next month those of us who love the crime/mystery genre are going to have a full plate. I posted this in the ELEGANT FRIENDS News post of 11 June. FYI:

The cable networks are stacking July with crime dramas. I love it.
From what I can tell they will all be on either Viki or Netflix:
Airing by day of the week:
1. M/T MODEL DETECTIVE/EXEMPLARY DETECTIVE (JTBC) (Netflix);
2. W/T FLOWER OF EVIL (tvN) (Viki);
3. F/S ELEGANT FRIENDS (JTBC) (Netflix); and
4. S/S TRAIN (OCN) (Viki).

Coming in August will be:
FORESTS OF SECRETS 2/STRANGER: SEASON 2 (tvN) (Netflix).

In July I will probably try to follow 3 of the above:
MODEL DETECTIVE, FLOWER OF EVIL and TRAIN.
Then of course in August I will definitely be watching LJH (1984) in FOS 2.
I was hoping to have JCW's BACKSTREET ROOKIE to lighten things up but I have a feeling it will only be available on iQIYI which I do not subscribe to.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,

Yes, I recall that news story about the new next-in-line to the throne of the Yi Dynasty.

Just as 2019 was the Year Of The Sageuk, 2020 is shaping up to be the year of mysteries and cop shows. FLOWER OF EVIL and TRAIN may be the only ones on my radar at this time.

So does Korea have a hair gel called Corruption that they use for these dramas?

@larelle79,

Absolutely! Corruption hair gel, favored by lawyers and white-collar criminals, is one of the styling aids without which Trope #128: Tonsorial Indicator Of Evil / Semaphore Bangs cannot function. Thugs and loansharks seem to prefer Greasy Kid Stuff. ;-)

@chieklet,
If all else fails, we can try to view TRAIN as two separate stories.

Here's hoping that the characters are well drawn and complex, and that they are both engaging. Judge hyung got short shrift in YOUR HONOR. After YSY's turn as Baek Yi-hyun in NOKDU FLOWER, it will be interesting to see just how dark and corrupt officer Seo Do-won's double is, and whether he evokes the least bit of sympathy. I'm a sucker for redemption arcs, and am interested to see if one will come into play. Or will we just be getting a cautionary tale?

I am thinking to watch this and hoping this would be better than the King-PPL Monarch, which the premise was also based on parallel worlds(But we got more PPL info than the rules of the parallel universe in this one.Sigh...)

Perhaps if you haven’t already @krabkrab, since you have PSYCHOPATH DIARY under your belt, you can go back to YOUR HONOR (2018) where YSY had dual roles of twin brothers, one supposedly ‘good’ and one supposedly ‘bad’. YH maybe a closer relation to Train than PD.

Going down memory lane. Before YH my only YSY drama was the sageuk GRAND PRINCE (2018) YSY’s last drama before YH.
During GP’s run @pakalanapikake had made the point, in the DIY hijacked comment thread that we wound up using, that in GP because of his role YSY was suppressing his natural charm.
All I can say is that when the first two episodes of YH aired and I saw YSY’s performance/interpretation of the supposedly ‘bad’ brother I was in shock. I wasn’t the only one.
My only time watching the beginning of a drama where I went into Producer mode. That is like a Producer seeing the rushes of his show for the first time and thinking “What the hell happened, omg”. Part of my problem (and in retrospect it was my problem) was that I did not expect such a contrast which I think is the sign of a good actor. After a little bit of a shaky start YH turned into a fine drama.

I agree with @marcusnyc20 bong-soo that there seem to be some parallels between TRAIN and YOUR HONOR.

If you're into melodrama, you can catch BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS / KING OF BAKING, KIM TAK-GOO with YSY and Joo Won on KBS World on YouTube. Good subtitles, and some great music. YSY sings one of the OSTs.
