A midsummer night’s update

Happy July Beanies!

We’re back to bring you a midsummer night’s update on all things DB. We’ve got video updates, BeanieBox updates, and more — but really, we want to thank you. Your support means we keep Dramabeans up and running. It means everyone has a place to gush about their favorite dramas, share their thoughts and feelings, and interact with other fans over the dramaland minutiae that means everything to drama watchers like us.

Streaming and technical updates
Did you notice it’s missing? Our video player is taking a brief hiatus while we work on improving the user experience, so thanks for all your feedback there!

Some of the updates we’re working on involve the lagging and loading issues, adding an option for premium supporters to opt in/out, and how to stop the video from playing after you’ve closed the video player out (thanks but no thanks, Jay Park!).

We’re also working with our content partners to play full episodes of dramas and variety shows in all markets. Because if you’re anything like me, it’s the full-length shows I want to see! (In fact, I look forward to getting “tricked” into watching more shows than I intended once this part of the player is up and running.)

Premium supporter updates
We’re chugging along and are seeing a slow but steady increase in supporters (check out our nifty chart below)! If you’re willing and able to support us, we have several different amount options for a one-time purchase, as well as annual and monthly options. Your generosity helps us keep the site running (really!).

Number of premium supporters as of June 30, 2020

BeanieBoxes, all the BeanieBoxes
For a limited time, we’re offering a Mystery BeanieBox, which has 14 to 20 snacks and a fun trinket. It may or may not be hand-packed by someone with a mysterious past that can never be spoken of.

We have two new versions of the BeanieBox now as well — the Coffee Lover and the Noodle Lover box. The Coffee Lover BeanieBox ships with 20 to 30 sticks of coffee plus sweet snacks. That’s enough coffee to PPL-along with even The King: Eternal Monarch. For noodle lovers, we have a box named after you: the Noodle Lover BeanieBox. It comes with 2 to 3 cup noodles, 7 to 10 individual ramyun packs and post-meal snacks.

Bonus! If you choose the monthly subscription option, you will receive exclusive Dramabeans swag (you may have spotted it in our banners).

You’re the best, Lee Soon-shin Beanies
I touched on this in the June update, but I’ve been thinking a lot about what this community means to me. Due to COVID-19, I’ve been self-distancing (socially distancing) and being mindful of not meeting up with family and friends. My sense of community and gathering changed completely with the pandemic, and if it wasn’t for this online community (and dramas if I’m being totally honest), I don’t know what my day to day would look like. For me, Dramabeans has given me a place to gather and rest. So, thank you for being here. Dramabeans without the Beanies is just beanless drama, and no one wants that.

If you’d like to tell us what being a part of Dramabeans means to you, pop over and leave us a message. (Should we make this a thing and publish some community posts around the love letter that is Dramabeans? Let us know in the comments!)

Here’s the TL;DR
If you’re able to give financial support, becoming a premium supporter would be a huge help to us. Benefits include an ad-free Dramabeans experience, a virtual supporter badge (you can toggle it on and off), two months of KOCOWA for free, and the eternal gratitude of entire Dramabeans team.

Looking for a different way to help? You can also subscribe to the aforementioned BeanieBox to get your snacks, ramyun, and caffeine fix. (If you’re not located in one of the countries we ship to, help us spread the word!)

Join us on social! You can follow our official Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts and interact with our content directly from there.

May your July be full of joy and fun dramas!

Thanks for the updates! Really appreciate how you guys listen to feedback and do your best to cater to our requests. Dramabeans has been my #1 kdrama fix for about 8 years now and I love being here. It's the only place where I get to gush over my favorite dramas and discuss them with people who are as passionate as I am. Best drama community out there so thank you as well!!

I want to thank you to have removed the mini player of video. It was disturbing for me.

I would like to test to Beanie Box, but I don't live on the right continent...

While many other sites provide discussion forums or threads for currently airing dramas, dramabeans is very unique in the sense that it also provides in-depth reviews and a separate fan wall for squealing. In addition, there are JavaBean's and GirlFriday's list of very subjective ratings and small reviews that I have enjoyed alot. There's also the monthly articles miisivictrix posts regarding PPL or other interesting bits she finds. We have had some very fun ones and I really admire how she can write & analyse basically anything. I love the discussion that follows these write-ups. I also enjoyed the monthly themes that dramabeans started with beanies submitting their write ups. So I would like to suggest that if these monthly themes starts again it will really add to our experience here. I personally looked forward to them alot so my visits here became more regular.
Another thing thing I would like to suggest to the dramabeans team is to add an option on our profiles where we can list and rate all currently watching/watched and plan to watch dramas. We could add little reviews and notes for each drama (like JavaBean's and GirlFriday's) and have an option to make this information private or public. This will also help us beanies keep track of our watch list. I know many beanies visit other sites or do it manually (like on their mobile notes or personal diaries) so if we could all do it on one single site it would be amazing.

I can’t emphasize just how helpful and influential JavaBean’s and GirlFriday’s overall list of drama rankings has been to this reader, particularly when first starting out. It would be so wonderful were it possible to update it and keep it going to reflect dramas released after 2018. I

I still use the recaps when I'm watching or rewatching an older drama.

One of the things I really like about dramabeans is that it feels really personal, so it feels like you’re discussing dramas with friends (even if you’re just lurking).

Firstly, I see the site is now secure with https://. Thank you for that.

And am glad you are getting more supporters and are doing the right thing for better UI!

Wishing DB the best and a very very long life. And this community is the best thing on the internet. Period.

It's wonderful to be able to talk with people from all over the world who love (or love to hate) the same dramas.

Also @db-staff would appreciate it if there's a functional edit button and an option to report a comment, whether on beanie post or recap comments. You can have a box appear after the report option is used to ask what exactly does the reporter find problematic about the comment.

A few times I've just used the tag you used, or for a problematic user name (don't ask) I used the "Contact Us" button at the bottom of the page. The problems were dealt with quickly.
