Drama viewership ratings for the week of June 29-July 5, 2020

Moving into July, we have a few shows wrapping up and a good few just getting started. Unfortunately, the shows that wrapped stumbled their way to the finish line, with Sweet Munchies at an all time low of 0.4 percent and Oh My Baby at 2.0 percent. At least with Oh My Baby, it saw a rise after weeks around the 1.0 percent mark.

On Wednesday, we had our lone premiere this week, Memorials. The drama’s ratings came in low, but they were higher than the ratings for its predecessor Soul Repairer’s finale. Old School Intern, which was the best performing show in this timeslot, finished with 6.2 percent on Wednesday, leaving Thursday’s section looking pretty empty.

Over the weekend, Backstreet Rookie and It’s Okay both saw a slight dip in numbers. Even so, the dramas are still hanging in there. For their sake, and the dramas before them, I can only hope that the power of online streaming is saving them.

I know right! Is it because of netflix, i wonder?

Doubt it because Crash Landing on You, Itaewon Class, and Hospital Playlist were on Netflix, yet they are in the top 10 highest-rated cable dramas.

Nope, not because of Netflix but because people want to see real stories these days, with strong plots and good entertainment. They dont have time for gimmicks anymore in Kdramas. There is a reason weekend dramas and Cable are doing well because they at least try to offer something different to the public. You know it's bad when big networks like SBS are getting 4% ratings and cable networks are getting 5% the same night. Cable people actually pay to get the channel, SBS is a public free network yet...I dont know what the heck is happening to these networks but they need to figure it out quick. If it wasnt for CLOY this year internationally there would be no interest for Kdramas anymore.

Some Netflix shows are heavily or 50/50 catered to the international viewers therefore loses it's wholesome Koreaness.
I'm enjoying IOTNBO for example but some Korean viewers might not be drawn to all of these foreign fairy tales etc.I wish Netflix's translations were true to it's Korean root like how viki fansub used to do it.
That's my 2 cents.

Who does KBS plan to give awards to this year? Will they be able to hold an awards ceremony?

The early returns for MEMORIALS/INTO THE RING/THE BALLOT on Saturday’s WWW were quite favorable. I really enjoyed the first two episodes and I generally avoid dramas in overt political settings.
I predict the ratings for (henceforth for me) INTO THE RING WILL rise as the word gets out and these ratings for episodes 1and 2 will be the series’ low.

Oh really? Did the re-runs get better ratings?

I think this show has Fight My Way/Inspector Labor Jo/Chief Kim vibes. As in both underdog stories that could gain more audiences through word of mouth. As I recall, both those shows started off with single digit ratings (4-6%) and then ended up getting double or double digit ratings at the end. I hope that's the case here.

None of the show deserve even this number of customers
Maybe local audience trying to change their image and portray they aren't as much dumb as Korean writers and production houses think they are.
So far broadcasters and production houses have shown no remorse or an attempt do some introspection. Better these houses bleed and bleed profusely forcing industry to take not and bring the much needed reforms.

Perhaps in future, they are not all over heads against rating anymore. More likely coveting spot in bigger player like Netflix, or perhaps Amazon/ AppleTV which have higher subscriber. I always noticed typical family drama have quite high audience when aired during weekend. Good luck Knetz.

Korean dramas should be made for Koreans first so local ratings should matter.
I don't like how this industry is changing and catering to international tastes more.
JTBC please don't change.

Yes, rating does matter. But they fell out so much behind at good drama. Nowadays, it is so hard to see drama that can hit 20 to 30% at their average especially major TV stations. I do understand cable network TV drama is privilage to those who subscribe it, but nonetheless it is frustrating on how Knetz showing their interest on such many good drama.
Well, catering international taste is something major script writer and PD should thinks nowadays as we always give so many constructive ideas by having discussion and bantering (eg: dramabeans platform). Not all changing are bad, just a different POV would give a nice touch and pique various group of viewers around the world.
My 2cents thought ✌

I don't know.. but amidst this pandemic thing and a lot of tragic news I want something I can relate to which is not overly dramatic. Things are already bad as they are, so my preferences during this time are something extremely fantasy (like our beloved? King) or something mundane as a family life skillfully portrayed by a good writer and good cast (like My Unfamiliar Family). It's Okay seems so pretty, but it seems depressing. Many people are already depressed, so I just want to avoid watching something directly about the issue.

The numbers for all shows are quite low. I guess many people turn to online streaming platforms now. They have a number of movies/ shows/ to choose from, so people don't have to watch the airing shows. They can just wait until those finished, read the reviews, and decide for themselves whether they want to watch them/ which one they want to watch.

When I'm depressed, I have to watch something depressing. I can't watch fluff because I can't get into it. I need something dark to make me cry my eyes out. Knetz' main complaint about It's Okay to Not Be Okay is they can't connect to Seo Ye-ji's character, but I don't need to connect to her because I connect to him. Moon Kang-tae is me. Pretending to be okay when he's not, forcing himself to smile when he's not happy, keeping everything bottled up inside, and just going through the motions of life. He is so relatable, so I root for his happiness. Besides, it's not all sad. There are comedy moments.

Yeah she reminds me of Villanelle from Killing Eve. She's a gray character, but I think that's what makes for more interesting/compelling characters. Plus the audience's guide is Kim Soo Hyun's character. I mean Hyena also had a badass 'unlikable' female character and people loved her. I think showing different spectrums of female personalities across the board is a great thing for K-dramas imo.

I don't care if I can connect to her or any other character, I just want to be entertained.

It's not that depressing, yeah the characters have hardships but so do most characters in kdramas, it's a very common plot device. It's actually quite funny and has some loving moments. I personally think the humour is even better than that of Backstreet Rookie and that is a comedy drama. I think people should give it a chance. Because they might not like Ko Moon Young as a character yet. But she is a very complex character with layers to her, and she is more likable the more you know her. It's refreshing to see a female character that is so different from the norm she even displays a lot of tropes that are usually reserved for male characters. It's Okay Not To Be Okay might genuinely end up being my favourite drama of 2020, it's just so well done and unique.

Interesting. The ratings are quite similar across the board except for the usual KBS weekender slot. I still think listing only primetime dramas rating does not show the whole picture of what the general public in Korea watches. There are so many shows. I can't recall all shows but I know 3MAD is still going super strong on Friday nights, the ratings for 3MAD was >11% this week. And there's a new variety show on Saturdays 9pm, and the latest ep got >5% ratings. But it's good to also note that probably even variety shows are available on multiple platforms just like kdramas 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Anyways...I'm only watching BR out of the current drama batch. I'm glad to see the ratings are okay for current ratings standards. It has cringe and also absurd moments but the main characters (Saetbyul, Yeon Joo, Daehyun) feel like normal people trying their best. Their struggles feel common and their inner turmoil is quite easy to understand.

ps: Kim Min Gyu gave me severe cameo syndrome! He and his dimples need their own romcom 😆.

Here's to hoping our next round of dramas gets better ratings, things look pretty dismal right now... but there are a lot I'm looking forward to! Flower of Evil, Graceful Friends, Stranger 2, Model Detective to name a few! :)

I am not sure why MY UNFAMILIAR FAMILY is not doing even better.

BACKSTRET ROOKIE deserves its ratings as a genuine comedy and so does ONCE AGAIN.

I feel so bad for OH MY BABY. It deserved much better than this.

I sometimes wonder if my moods are reflected in Korean ratings :-D

The reason I am not watching Psycho is because it disturbs me a little. I am in the mood to watch simple things. I want simple romance, tsundere romance that is not connected to anything real. I want a swash buckling hero, a strong female character with all positive characters with perhaps some negative characters that quickly are defeated. I am looking for a fairytale right now.

That is also the reason, I am unable to enjoy any ongoing dramas. Something or the other reminds me of something I have encountered closely and being not treated the way it should.

That is why, I guess, I will be fine with some drama that gives me a very handsome guy and very beautiful girl and a handsome second lead and some torrid romance with idiotic rich parents they can stand upto.... My taste in my entertainment has gone down.

I just want to laugh or giggle and feel joyful.

That is why I enjoyed MPUB. It really entertained me.

None of the current dramas are doing it yet.

With the general lower viewership across, I wonder what other programs are on the airwaves in Korea.
2019 was a great year for Kdrama. I remember I had a hard time to pick which ones to watch (so many great ones). I cannot say the same for 2020. Please post the kdrama line up for the 2nd half of 2020. At least I will try to find something to look forward to.
