Im Soo-hyang gets artsy in new promos for When I Was the Prettiest

New promos have been released for MBC’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama When I Was the Prettiest. An official poster, as well as character stills of Im Soo-hyang (Graceful Family) are part of the latest round of teasers.

The melodrama stars Im Soo-hyang as Oh Ye-ji, a ceramic artist who gets entangled in a dangerous love triangle with two brothers. Although all she had wanted was a normal life with normal dreams, her life becomes a whirlwind when fate brings tragic love to her doorstep instead.

Ji-soo (My First First Love) plays the younger of the brothers, Seo Hwan and Ha Suk-jin (Your House Helper) plays older brother Seo Jin.

In the newly released poster, Im Soo-hyang and Ha Suk-jin are shown sharing an intimate moment — mimicking the famous pottery scene in the American movie, Ghost. Meanwhile, Ji-soo sits morosely on the stair steps next to them. The workshop where they are located is said to be where the ill-fated love triangle begins, which also sparks the breakdown of the two brothers’ relationship.

We get to see more of Im Soo-hyang in the character stills, which feature her working as a high school art teacher. Although she is described as a student teacher and not a full-fledged instructor, it is curious that Ji-soo is wearing a high school uniform in the poster.

I’m a little concerned about the direction of the story, but I’ll wait to see how the show handles everything first. It’s probably not going to be an easy watch, in any case, but it would be nice to have a good melodrama in the watchlist to balance out all the sci-fi and mystery dramas that are coming up in the next few weeks.

Written by Jo Hyun-kyung (Grand Prince, Maids) and directed by PD Oh Kyung-hoon (Thief-nom, Thief-nim), MBC drama When I Was the Prettiest will be premiering next month on August 19.

My thoughts exactly... At the beginning of the article, I was ready to write a comment about Jisoo being another second lead but now that we know that he's underaged? Something's not right about that.... Like tccolb said, this definitely won't be an easy watch...

And she’s a teacher? Yuck.

A question, was similar objections raised at the time of "I can hear your voice?" (I love that show so calling it out is playing a devil's advocate)

I’m sure they were but I can’t tell you one way or the other 😂 To be completely honest with you, I was too enthralled with LJS to care much about the age difference LOL but there were times when I was concerned because it is again a high school/adult relation and it was just weird.

I just keep on reading this whole age gap thing coming up in all the discussions and even the whole adult / high school pairs. (To be honest, the high school kids never seem to be 14 or 16 year old to me which I was when I passed what we call high school and junior college in my country, but then I graduated when I was barely 20 :-D )

I LOVED Park Soo Ha and I bought the whole relationship in that story. And that FL is till date my most favourite in any K-Drama.

So when I keep on reading all these comments, I can not stop asking myself about how I was never uncomfortable with that.

To be fair, I was voting and most of my friends were dating when they were 20 and were treated as legally adults. (Park Soo ha was 20 when he was found after the memory loss episode. )

And as a curious after thought, it seems no one seems to have a problem with childhood love trope.

@jillofalltrades I agree! When I first watched the drama, I didn't think of it as much of an issue and what probably helped was the knowledge that the actors didn't look like they were in high school lol I feel like now people are becoming more aware (straying away) from the child/adult love trope which is why this drama surprised me.

I don't know, I never watched I hear your voice.

I want this drama to go EXACTLY where you're imagining. But it won't. They never do. Except perhaps 'Secret Love Affair' but the heroine eventually wound up being beaten in prison every day over it.

I would have prefered Ha Suk Jin as the ML, I have a weakness for him. For Ji Soo's character age, I guess there will have a jump in time because in the description, he's an architectural designer, not a student.

I thought HSJ was the ML? If Jisoo is an architectural designer and out of school, I'll consider liking his relationship w/ the FL but just in general, the supposed age difference is concerning...

I don't know, but it looks like the name of Jisoo comes first in the descriptions I read. For the age, she's not really a teacher. So she could be like 22 years old and him 18 when they met, it wouldn't be a big difference of age... I don't know, we will have to wait for the 19th August.

House on Wheels viewers are gushing over the (fantasy) prospect of an IU/Yeo Jin-goo love match, nevermind the age difference.

I always want HSJ to be the ML, I share your weakness for him.
The love triangle between two brothers is not something I like, and I'm not really fond of FL, so it will be probably a no for me.

I find Ha Suk-Jin's career interesting. He is a capable actor whose generic good looks enable him to play chaebol, middle and working class equally well and he has a knack for choosing interesting, well-written scripts...which never seem to achieve the ratings success the quality merits.

As for the writer of this drama, I am only familiar with the three projects referenced in the post but boy, does he have a thing about love triangles or what? I realize its a standard dramaland trope, but its really front and center for him.

I loved both GRACEFUL FAMILY and also MY ID IS GANGNAM BEAUTY so I have great faith in Im Soo-hyang to deliver in this one too. Ha Suk-jin was good in YOUR HOUSE HELPER as well.

While the story seems a bit problematic I am reserving judgement and will give it a shot.

I like Im Soo Hyang and Ji Soo.
Isnt Ji Soo the lead for this?
I am icky with the love triangle with the brothers and that school uniform. So may just check out the first two episodes to get a feel for this show.

asdfghjk i burst out laughing when i saw that poster like i’m sorry but wtf LOL

also yikes ji soo wearing that school uniform... but i’m assuming there’s a time skip??? since the plot summary says he’s an architect.

on a lighter note i gotta say; as youthful as he is, ji soo is getting too old to be playing a high school student asdfghjk

I would have liked to see Ha Seokjin as the ML but even if as a second lead, do something interesting! I mean come on dude what is this mess!
Well, these are my pre-drama thoughts.

As for the student-teacher thing, I guess when Ji-soo was a student Ha Seokjin dated her while he nursed a crush in his mind. And after a time jump they meet again.
That brothers' relationship thing, can they really stretch it for 16 eps???

Not really looking forward to this. After seeing 872 love triangle shows, I have just about had my fill.

This reminds me of Japanese drama Majo no Jōken by Nanako Matsushima and Hideaki Takizawa. The 'First Love' song by Utada Hikaru is my forever japanese song.
