Kim Sung-chul joins Park Eun-bin, Kim Min-jae in SBS’s Do You Like Brahms?

Park Eun-bin, Kim Min-jae, Kim Sung-chul

Kim Sung-chul (Arthdal Chronicles) is coming on board SBS’s upcoming drama, Do You Like Brahms? This drama is about classical music students who are at a turning point in their careers, where their love and dreams are on the line.

Kim Sung-chul’s character is a prodigy cellist who has been on an elite path all his life. His name is Han Hyun-ho, and he has a bright, optimistic personality. He’s simple, with limitless energy and a strong work ethic. If he fails at something once, he’ll try again and again with resolve before accepting that something’s not possible. This ethic applies to both his musical career and his love life.

He fell in love with Park Ji-hyun’s (Rookie Historian Gu Hae-Ryung) character when they first met in middle school. He’s continuously expressed his love for her, and she finally fell for him after entering college. As a result they’ve been together for the past ten years.

In the main loveline, Park Eun-bin (Hot Stove League) plays a character who graduated as a business management major from the top university in Korea. After discovering her passion for the violin, after four tries, she managed to re-enter that same top university as a music student. Now at age 29, she’s confused about her career path going forward. She meets Kim Min-jae’s (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 2) character who is a world-famous pianist on a sabbatical in Korea, and both their trajectories begin to change.

Monday-Tuesday music drama Do You Like Brahms?, written by Ryu Bo-ri and directed by Jo Young-min, will begin airing on August 31 on SBS.

Excited to get more good music from this drama after Hospital Playlist which everyone loved, hopefully.

With Symphony's Romance (Chinese remake of Nodame Cantabile"), Park Min-young's cellist character in "I'll Find You on a Beautiful Day," Hyun Bin as a talented (ex)pianist in "Crash Landing on You " and now this show with my favorite Park Eun-bin, as a classical musician it makes me so happy that classical music is seemingly having its moment in the spotlight.

Oh and Johannes Brahms just happens to be one of my absolute favorite composers! 😊

Park Eun-bin is wonderful and I am a classical music lover, so how can I not watch this? (I have been enjoying some of the new Kpop videos on this site- but we do not seem to get IU on it so I guess I will continue to go to U-tube for my IU fix)

Thank you for the progress report on DO YOU LIKE BRAHMS, @tineybeanie. I've been looking forward to this drama since it was first announced.

Park Eun-bin was terrific in HOT STOVE LEAGUE, so I'm looking forward to her turn as a violinist. It will be fun to see Kim Min-jae, previously an idol trainee in THE BEST HIT, at the piano. Kim Sung-chul playing a cellist? Sounds interesting. I haven't seen PRISON PLAYBOOK, in which he made such a splash, so I'm looking forward his next role after ARTHDAL CHRONICLES.

Park Eun-bin was also good in JUDGE v JUDGE. But I enjoyed her role in STOVE LEAGUE (Yes it should have been HOT STOVE LEAGUE) as well.

Thank you for the recommendation, @ndlessjoie mugyuljoie! I just watched it, and enjoyed it very much. It's charming and very funny. Kim Sung-chul has a lovely singing voice, and nice comic timing. His kid sis stole the show.

It was also a treat to see Lee Sang-yi, who was great as the playboy friend & brother-in-law of Seo Kang-joon in THE 3RD CHARM, and Pil-gu's little league coach in WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS. Thanks again! ;-)

I really like the actors! Park Eun Bin is a gem! I hope we will get a great love story because she's good at it but we were deprived of it during her last dramas ( Jugde vs Judge they ended by holdings hands... what a waste when the actor is Yeo Woo Jin... u_u)

I hope we will get a lot of classical music! I Wanna Hear Your Song was pretty disapointing for that.

I agree with you about JUDGE v JUDGE. The romance was underwhelming, the only real disappointment in that show, which was clearly set up for it. There was none at all in STOVE LEAGUE, but it was a great show anyway.

I think Judge vs Judge had the best love triangle. They were all pretty honest with their feelings respecting each ones' feelings too. But it's like they didn't go to all the way for the love story.

In Ghost Detective, again there was a love story but it was the same. His life-death situation was not helping.

Yeah, between his parents and the fact he didn't get the girl :(

But it was really nice to see him to be a good guy until the end :)

@kurama,
Re: waste of Yeon Woo-jin in JUDGE VS. JUDGE, it was even worse in I WANNA HEAR YOUR SONG -- because Song Jae-rim was squandered, too. Hrmph!

I just realized that I've also seen Park Eun-bin in THE STORY OF THE FIRST KING'S FOUR GODS, MY LOVE PATZZI, and GU AM HEO JOON / HUR JUN, THE ORIGINAL STORY. She has been acting since the age of 6.

Brahms with his unrequited love for Clara Schumann and as the best friend of her husband Robert was part of one of the most famous and tragic love triangles in European music history so maybe this drama will make him (through his music) the second lead! 😆

Ya! I was thinking the same. Can any of the actors actually play the instruments they have been paired with? I hope so. Musical instrument fails are one of the most annoying things about watching dramas. How much does it take to get a coach to at least explain how to hold the instrument?! Argh.

No the real question is, if the actors CAN'T play, is the director clever and on to it enough and the editors good enough that we (but mostly TwoSet) won't be able to tell??? :P :P :P

@pickleddragon,
One of the things I most enjoyed about HOSPITAL PLAYLIST was that the actors were all playing their own instruments, and now have their own real life garage band. Jo Jung-seok is an axe demon.

@sicarius,
Thank you (I think) for mentioning TwoSet Violin. I'm now in traction after watching a couple of their videos and a rejoinder from an aggrieved woodwind player. These guys are hilarious -- as is Ms. Horsch. ;-)

(I just went to check and lo! and behold he has!!!!! Ahhh wonderful. May the Sacrilegious War continue. 😂😂😂)

P.S. why thank you! Alas not yet! Book 7 will hopefully chronicle the Grand Quest of the Hunt for Purple Melona. Given that it took 2 years for the Coconut Duchy to be found though, the book might get quite long ;) (Mr. P has good taste. Ube ice cream is scrumptious)

Going from business to violin performance—that’s a stretch. I’d be too scared I’d starve. But I’ll be watching this for the music and Kim Min-Jae. Sweet boy.

Especially if the story has her only playing the violin a couple years before switching! As a music major myself (viola), it’s completely unrealistic! To get into a top music program requires years and years of training and honing the skill, usually from a very young age. Unless she’s the next Paganini, I’m thinking a bit of writing liberty is gonna be taken here 😆

@ally-le Ally,

That's exactly what I was thinking about the female lead's change of occupation.

Kim Min-jae studied piano and composition in middle school, so he has experience at the keyboard. I expect that he'll do fine. But what of the other actors and their respective instruments? Fingers crossed that the writing holds up and we don't bust a gut from suspending our disbelief.

CRASH LANDING ON YOU did a great job of simulating Hyun Bin tickling the ivories. I had wondered at the time if he were actually playing. Turns out he had a stunt pianist. ;-)

I really have become a fan of Kim Sung-cheol from watching him first in PRISON PLAYBOOK then in ARTHDAL CHRONICLES and last October on the big screen in the film BATTLE OF JANGSARI. In all three he played a somewhat similar character: the young guy who looks out only for No. 1 but then comes around to do what is right.
My favorite role of his was as Ipsaeng in AC. The Eunseom (Song Joong-ki)—Ipsaeng bromance in AC was great.

Kim Sung-cheol has a lovely singing voice.

@pakalanapikake,
Thank you for the mini review. I am in a position to work in a couple of things before the onslaught of crime drama which are lurking close by. Speaking of crime, I really enjoyed CONFESSION (2019). Junho and Yoon Jae-myung made a great team.

Finally saw your comment. Glad to be of service.

I'm so glad you enjoyed CONFESSION. It was one of my top Kdramas of 2019. What a great cast. I'm counting the days until Junho gets back from the service. ;-)

You're absolutely correct -- Junho and Yoo Jae-myung were simply terrific in the twisty CONFESSION. Nam Gi-ae was dandy as the mysterious office manager. I really warmed up to her after initially being turned off by her character in OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN (Park Do-kyung's horrendous Mother From Hell) -- which was really just a testimonial to how great an actress she is. I loved her turn as the Queen in HAECHI.

2

@pakalanapikake,
By my count Junho has about 6 months left of his military commitment so maybe sometime late next year he will be back on the small screen.
As in CONFESSION and WEATHER now in FLOWER OF EVIL Nam Gi-ae is portraying a mother whose relationship with her soon is very important to the story.
