Drama viewership ratings for the week of Aug. 10-16, 2020

We’re moving into the next season of dramas, and it’s already looking quite promising. And judging by the chart, it seems like everyone’s in the mood for a thriller or crime drama. Still, I hope a good rom-com comes around and snatches hearts; the poor genre’s been struggling lately.

Speaking of which, crime drama The Good Detective continued its steady climb, reaching an all-time high of 6.8 percent, while rom-com Men Are Men struggled to reach even 4 percent. We saw something similar in the next timeslot, with Flower of Evil staying strong and the others barely keeping up.

Other than Once Again, which has been the top weekend show, the weekend is chock full of thrillers. We’ve got Graceful Friends, we’ve got Train — and now, we’ve also got the return of Forest of Secrets. Viewers must’ve really missed the latter, because season 2 premiered to 7.6 percent. Wow, just wow.

So happy for Forest of Secrets 2. I was really looking forward to season 2 because the last season was fantastic in terms of story, acting and cinematography and from the ratings looks like many people were looking forward to it as well. And it didn't disappoint , season 2 started like its predecessor without any bang but slowly building up the story and mystery but now with the added advantage of full fledged character. I still hope we get a more behind the stories of the main characters esp Detective Yeo Jin because to be honest we dont know anything about , just she is the most normal character with pure heart but yet a very intelligent and capable detective who can go toes with the intelligent character and probably the only person who Hwang Si Mok can trust

Its good rating for a pretty weak 1st episode. Its start so hype lead it but if doesn't come out of its own image then it might suffer. Not easy to stand against the swedish dramas. bar is high

Information are wrong though, e.g. Memorial ep 14, 2.4% (first part) and 3.1% (second part) so the episode average rating is 2.8%, for ep 13- 2.3%(first part) and 3% (second part) so the episode average rating was 2.7%.

What were the ratings for the MBC rom-com "Lonely Enough to Love" that premiered on Tuesday? I'm guessing they weren't good...the first episode was so cheesy.

I hope Flower of Evil's ratings will rise. 🙏

Impressed by FOS2's first rating! Wow.

Interesting how many crime/thriller shows are airing right now and how some of them doing better than rom-coms. Rom-coms usually get all the hype and enthusiasm.

Right? There are so many crime/thriller shows its like jeez Louise lol. Not hating but I fear it will go the way of rom-coms as in get tired, stale, and boring fast and I'm kinda feeling a bit burnt out on them...

But at the same time, the current rom-coms lack that extra something to make it pop. Only blockbuster rom-coms have done well in the last few years, and they come every few years: Goblin, DOTS, and CLOY.

I think Koreans are tiring of the old tropes in rom-com-melos, and crime/thriller is more engaging, especially a good “who done it,” which is why I think shows like Camellia Blooms did well, because of the mystery underneath the love story.

As per usual in the world of streaming service, FoS won't be grazing my region anytime soon, so I'll wait for the beanies' opinions on it. It took a couple of episodes of season one to awaken my interest, crime isn't normally my cup of tea. The exception is Midsummer Murders, I grew up with John Barnaby.

Yay for Flower of Evil, loving that show!

I've watched every episode of Midsomer Murders, and of Morse. Don't like Endeavor all that much.

2020 has been a great year for crime...........dramas. If the quality continues this may well be “The Great Crime Drama Year of 2020).
(As a sageuk fan I call 2019 “The Great Sageuk Year of 2019”).

All three of my current crime dramas have been excellent: THE GOOD DETECTIVE, TRAIN and FLOWER OF EVIL. TRAIN has finished and I will begin FOREST OF SECRETS 2.
I will reiterate a comment from 3 weeks ago. I am baffled why TRAIN’s ratings were so poor. Thank you Yoon Shi-yoon for a terrific performance.

I think OCN is on a general demise along with KBS.

Man what happened? A few years ago, they had shows hit 5-7% range easily, now its 1%. OCN is owned by CJ E&M which also owns tvN. A lot of channels (both cable and public) have done poorly this year and on worth. Many Koreans don't view television on screen anymore, but through other technological means.

True but World of the Married still managed 27% in ratings and Crash Landing managed 21% so some people must still be watching tv.

Even though both OCN and tvN are owned by the same company, tvN has a lot stronger than OCN. tvN started in 2006 vs. OCN in the mid 90s, tvN has a very impressive international reached in Asia due to tvN Asia. They also get recognition with popular shows from tvN brought by International Streaming giant Netflix. OCN, though had a very strong past, is a movie channel on basic cable that shows movies a few years old with some new programs in the evenings. That doesn't give people the image to boost they ratings at all. It's sad that some of their shows, such as Train, are pretty good and deserve a much better recognition.

Exactly! OCN is also a lot more niche in its target audience. 95% of their dramas are thrillers. They tried branching out with romcoms but they tended to be, for lack of a better word, crapfests. Thrillers can be popular, but if you only produce thrillers your regular audience will probably only be regular thriller viewers. You won't get the more mainstream exposure that, say, Forest of Secrets gets on tvN.

I don't think OCN having a smaller target audience is a bad thing! They are very good at what they do. They have lots of solid thrillers and attract top-notch talent to their shows. But it does explain their smaller viewer base.

mindy, ratings means less these days with streaming getting more and more popular. Yet the ratings still provide some values to the streaming service subscribers like me, to help pick the shows to watch. I check the description, the cast, the ratings, the fan's comment, etc. There are way too many good Kdramas (even the not so good one are way better than the shows in US) and I don't have time. :)

I’m wondering why the rating of Stranger ep2 dropped so much from that of ep1...

Since the first ep ratings were quite a bit higher than the ratings for season 1, I'm guessing people who heard about the show and how good it was but maybe didn't watch season 1 decided to give season 2 a shot and found it either wasn't their thing or decided they shouldn't just jump in without seeing season 1 first.
