hey guys, i’m super stressed out right now. i’ve started college apps, and i have a couple other things i’ve been working on for extracurriculars, and my SAT’s at the end of this month. school hasn’t even started, and i know i’m gonna be even more tired then, so i’m pretty scared. i haven’t been able to make plans with anyone either because i’ve been so busy, so the past few weeks have been kinda hard for me. i honestly was just looking for some motivation/advice— just anything to raise my spirits

Hi. If it helps I'm going through something similar. I've started applying to colleges and the uncertainty around what the entrance is going to be like is very tough. I'm not able to make plans with my friends because cases keep on rising in my city and it feels like everyone is doing something productive except me. I just want you to know that you're not alone.

Big, big hugs. I don't have any great motivation/advice but I will tell you one of my favorite quotes from WInnie the Pooh: "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." This seems like a big turning point or chapter in your life and it is perfectly normal to be scared. But maybe a small part of that fear can be excitement and hope -- because wow, you're starting something big and new. I kind of envy that! I'm 40 now but if I were to say anything to my HS self it would be: it's okay, you'll make mistakes, but you'll figure it out eventually -- just take this time to get to know yourself and TRUST yourself, because believe me you will turn out a lot better than you think. Also: take lots of selfies, because your skin is amazing now and you do not need makeup or filters. Take care!

Lol, take lots of selfies. As a 43 year old kbeauty fanatic, this super great advice! But also, start taking care of your skin (sunscreen, sunscreen, hats, etc.) now and you’ll have great skin later! And yes, study hard, stay focused, but do what makes you happy too!

Lol the selfies advice is literally my favorite. As a current student, I also LOVE taking pictures just as a way to relieve stress and remind myself that no matter what I'm doing, it's a memory and an adventure. ...I have a lot of strange picture of me cleaning, cooking, standing in line for tests and doing other random stuff, but I look hilarious in all of them and it's fun :)

Ahhh a fellow rising senior!! I'm in exactly the same place that you are and I understand everything you're going through. When people tell you that college app season is stressful, they were not kidding but I didn't expect it to be this bad haha Yesterday, I found out that my SAT got cancelled and honestly, I'm not even sure if I want to reschedule because it feels like a never-ending cycle of not being able to test. And, my school starts in 2 weeks and there's just a general sense of not be motivated.

But, we got this!! In seven months this is all going to be over and we'll be thriving. It may be a rocky start, but we'll figure out what we need to do and be better off because of it. We'll end up at the right place for us and we'll look back on these months with relief and think about how stupid we were for stressing about this stuff LOL If you need any support or anything, let me know! Feel free to tag me wherever :)

I watched an episode of reply 1994 yesterday in which young adults were dealing with the IMF crisis in 1997. I certainly felt less alone as soon as I realized that while history repeats itself, we can recover and pass on wisdom to the next generations. i fell in love with one of the male leads in 88, but ultimately reply 1988 is my favorite show not because of the romance, but because of how warm that family dynamic is. and 1988 also has the parents of each friend, so while you might have to remember more names, watching the show made me feel like i was part of their neighborhood.

so jealous of you, i wish i could rewatch the reply series for the first time again!

Hi! Not sure how much you'd like advice, but I'm the go-to, level-headed friend when it comes to school stuff. Friends need to know if the newbie prof is good? I tell them where to look. (Hint: You find out what other institutions they've taught at and google that and their name for their most recent RateMyProfessor profile). Friends need help re-matriculating? I tell them who to email. Friends need me to skim their personal statements? Yeah, sure why not? Was not going to do my readings anyway. But if it's in the middle of me binging something, that's a different story.

I'm planning on doing a teaching credential post-grad and to also apply for academic counselor positions.

Also, super quick. I thought the SAT was cancelled or something like that because 1) pandemic 2) it's an unreliable measure of academic aptitude.

Let me know if you'd like more solid advice. Also, I felt the most stressed about filling out FAFSA because big adulting finance words scare me. They still do btw. I have some quick tips regarding FAFSA, too.

But super duper quickly because I have a bias, here's my academic profile.

- Went to a top high school and got a 3.7 GPA.
- Attended community college night classes to get ahead while I was in high school
- Skipped out on the ACT/SAT
- Here's why: If you go to community college and transfer to an institution, they don't care what your SAT score is. They don't ask. Not even UC Berkeley
- I went to community college and transferred within 2 years and now "attend" a 4-year institution. Actually, in CA, there's a program called Transfer Admission Guarantee. Emphasis on 'guarantee.' It means you make an agreement with a University of California school that you'll complete the pre-reqs and GEs, maintain a decent GPA, and then you're pretty much in. I've never heard of a TAG denied.
- I got into UC Berkeley and decided to go to a state school instead. Nothing against Cal. I just wanted to get out of the Bay Area (I'm from San Francisco proper).

I'd be able to help you best if you live in California, for obvious reasons, but the more general college app anxiety, I hope I can assuage with accurate info.

Can't remember if DMing is a thing on DB. It's been a while since I've logged in and actively participated. Feel free to do so, though!

I suddendly have too many new dramas to watch, and all with good subs, good quality, same day airing as Korea, or China....
- Flower of Evil: provided by local streaming provider, 3 hours after airing time with full sub. Keep wondering how this drama will unfold, and what will happen to our main couple...
- Go ahead: same, but a bit tricky with VIP account requirement. At least it airs everyday. It's my no. 1 fav C-drama this year, laugh then cry then laugh each and every episode T_T. Love Papa Li, love the trio's bond, love the girl friendship, and "hate 3 generation females from Ling Xiao's mother side".
- Forest of secrets: Netflix, airing today.
- Was it love: Netflix, dropped, too busy to follow Ae Jeong's choices. She always brought the problem herself...
Anyway, As a 15 years K-drama fans, I've never been blessed like this before, thanks to all drama streaming providers!!!!

Little Boy - 575k - 19 August.

I always attach Open post with a currently broadcasting fiction. Few weeks ago i talked about forex trading and stock market.
Little Boy is a gift that gives too much to those with skills. May was good one and previous week was week of bullion. Gold made new high, Silver touched its previous high. Then baam, such a big fall in a day and continoous fall for 2nd day. 2 days 10% fall and then recovery. What a majestic week was this one for a trader.
I know people who have made 50k-100k in a day and few more hav even made 500k in a week. yeah, an earning which is same as yearly income of many professionals. As said once by me, those who make in Stock Market do good in politics too. Stock Market analysis of human mind is just too awesome to ignore.
I had this opportunity too, i was confident but lacked courage, my optimism didn't matter much. All in all, That was boosted confidence, I still need to train myself more. When you go in, you go in with full force and confidence. A confidence that can't withstand risk is fake.

The taste of money isn't much but the taste of being right is surely delicious.

I have seen people cry over -ve returns.(i couldn't maybe my body conserved water) Yeah. When i started even i used to panic, fast heartbeat, sometimes even hands sweating. That proved, how weak my mind was, Over time it became strong and more strong as i was able to keep business and human emotions distance from each other.
This is why i feel no empathy for those who like to make excuses and never put enough efforts into work.

I appreciate skills. Most do. Region, religion, race, gender and any other classification doesn't matter. What matters most is Profit. Business isn't a charity. If everyone has the same skill set, i.e no one has the vital skills aka this is your low level labur aka unskilled labour. You can exchange it anyday and no one will notice. This is what goes on in entertainment industry which almost everyone is aware of. Bunch of toons of who sell trash in the name of art but the point that matters is - this generates employment, they are earning their livelihood through it and keeping the economy of a nation afloat. They do work hard to earn their income and bring smile on many faces. +ve are materialistic aka fast food aka junk food. -VE is what they can never achieve and they do no respect for.

The only constant is Change - This was said to me by someone in 2015. Such a mature identity. Time Change, Seasons change and so does people and their feelings. Human feelings are fickle and so are humans. As said last week - a human society makes the nation, those who have ever read public policy might remember that specific view. Ideals of society then become ideals of a nation. Ideals are what human beings wish to become, but reality is always different. Ideals change with time and reflect the what society it at present. A nation has character and personality and it absorb human traits from the society itself so putting a nation on pedestal is foolish mistake nationalists make all the time. Talk of ideals is mostly phony and those who claim to espouse it are certainly facemasks. A day's hard labour - push into corner - facing adversity and these phony talkers start to chant dear leader's name. That's why ARTHDAL is such a good show. It shows true human character. spouting ideals is the best way to earn brownie points from society. That's what these leaders do too. That's why there is no difference between these facemasks and dear leader they accuse of this-n-that. No human is perfect and no human can stand the test of ideals. Truth is an ideal cherish by many foolishly including me, but how many of the identities speak truth when Lies are what keep the human world intact and in order.
Talking about ideals of a nation is quite easy conveniently ignoring all of its malice propagated by its populace.
That's why i say trump and its companions all across the world, leading this n that nation are indeed the problems needed for modern human societies. Societies like to ignore hard facts and truths because don't fulfill their materialistic needs. That's why trump and xi type villains you need. They come and destroy the fake calm and the chaos they indulge in brings out the real face of everyone on surface. They deserve the credit for this. And that's one main reason i like them because chaos is what leads to reforms. You think independent institution has just started now to go rogue?
Its always been the issue, just that you are noticing it now, and that's also because you are in pinch and put into corner.
Institutions derive their power from people and if people don't stand for them, and if people like a gullible institution, it becomes one. This behaviour you also see in various fandoms - Fandoms usually indulge in Majoritarianism and fandoms are the voters. Freedom of expression involves freedom to Offend too. You can like/dislike/agree/disagree with someone's view or choices but you don't have the right to use your freedom to curtail someone other's freedom. majoritarianism ofcourse gives fandom the boost but it never serve the society its part of.

Not sure if someone can help with this question I’ve always had:

For terms of endearment in Korean, once enough familiarity has been established, I’ve noticed a lot of times they add an “-ie” at the end of a name. Like: “Taek-ie” in Reply 1988, and “Gun-ie ssi” in Fated to Love You.

- Is “-ie” similar time “-chan” in Japanese?

- Is it mostly limited to family members (or similar level) of familiarity?

- Is it something added to single syllable names because”Taek ssi” or “Gun ssi” sound weird? (It was always “Lee Gun ssi” or “Gun-ie ssi”)

Ok, lastly... in Baby Faced Beauty, the 2nd ML called FL “So Young ssi,” and the ML got jealous because the translation note said this was of addressing someone is usually from a boyfriend. But when the ML also wants her other colleagues to address her with respect, he asks them to call her “Lee So Young ssi.”

- So “ssi” after full name is respectful, but “ssi” after first name only is familiar/intimate?

Thank you in advance for anyone who can help with this. I feel like I miss so many cues in a drama scene because I don’t understand what level of familiarity the cha ta Byers are talking time each other with.

I’m so sorry, lots of typos because of autocorrect:

- is “-ie” similar TO* “-chan” in Japanese?

- Last sentence: “I miss so many cues... because I don’t understand what level of familiarity the CHARACTERS* are talking TO* each other with.”

What interesting questions you have! I've also been doubting something about the language they use in dramas, but I wasn't paying that much attention though I also knew I was missing something. Posting my comment here in case there is any Korean Beanie nearby so I can be notified when your comment got answered.

1. Adding -ie, as example Taek-ie means close friends, can also be used when referring to children. It does work like -chan

2. Her name is Lee So Young, Lee is her family name and Su Young is her given name. Saying Su Young-sshi means more intimate because you address her own name. When you address her with Lee So Young-sshi, it is formal because that's how you address people you aren't close generally, your supervisor or people you respected and you include her full name + family name.

Thanks! I thought “-ssi” was already fairly polite, so I didn’t realize “So Young ssi” is a term of endearment. I guess the next step up would be “So Young-ie” or “So Young ah”?

in Lee Gun’s case, when the first name is monosyllabic, you have to say “Gun-ie ssi” instead of “Gun ssi” then? Taek-ssi or Gun-ssi sounds a little strange

Sorry, another follow up question:

What is the difference between "ie" and "ah" after a name then? Is "ie" used when talking about your loved one to a 3rd party, whereas "ah" is when talking to the loved one directly?

in IOTNBO, the first time Kang-Tae referred to the FL as "Moon-Young ah" in his mind, that was an important moment in the progression of their relationship on his side. Would it have made sense for him to refer to her as "Moon-Young ie"?

1
12
reply

Required fields are marked *

You got the gist of it!
"~ah" after a name is to address the person directly, provided their name has a "final" consonant in the spelling, otherwise it's "~ya". Gun (건) and Taek (택) both have a "final" consonant in the bottom row, so it's "Gun-ah". Otherwise, it would be "~ya", like "Kangtae-ya" or "Jisoo-ya" since Kangtae (강태) and Jisoo (지수) end in a vowel (the ㅜ is a horizontal vowel). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangul#Morpho-syllabic_blocks for a picture. It's not necessarily for loved ones, since it's used in informal speech.

"~ie" can be added to one syllable names instead of using the surname as the first syllable, so you got that right.
More generally, "~ie" is added to a name when referring to that person in the 3rd person, if the name has a final consonant. So it would be "Munyeong-ie did this" but "Kang-tae did this".

"~ssi" is added to preserve a formality, usually with an acquaintance, someone at work, if you don't want to call him oppa, etc. Then, "Mun-yeong ssi" can be used both to address the person directly or in 3rd person, "Mun-yeong ssi did this".

2
9
reply

Required fields are marked *

Mun-yeong (문영) has a final consonant too.

0

Thank you so much!

So “-ie” is either filler for a monosyllabic first name, or it functions like the Japanese “-chan.”

So in Fated to Love You, FL calls ML “Gun-ie ssi.” I assume it’s because it’s an arranged marriage, she doesn’t feel super intimate with him yet, that’s why she calls him “Gun-ie ssi” instead of “Gun -ah”?

So in order to formality to familiarity, would it be:

Lee Gun ssi > Gun-ie ssi > Gun ah ?

0

I’m so sorry, can I pick your brain for another question 😣 I have no one else to ask...

In IOTNBO, at one point the ML yells out the FL’s full name: Ko Mun Young. The FL got mad, but the 2nd FL got jealous.

Is saying the full name, without -ssi, really rude / intimate?

There are so many ways to address a name intimately, I feel like I’m missing the significance of a lot of romantic interactions

0

@myneighbortotoro I think Jang Nara's character may be younger, in which case she wouldn't call him "Gun ah", no matter how intimate they got, and even if she used informal speech for everything else. Her using "Gun-ie ssi" was a small detail that fit her soft-spoken/reserved character, as opposed to "Gun-ie oppa". They were also not well acquainted, but it's not uncommon to call someone "oppa" almost right away, especially in those circumstances. But yes, full name + ssi > first name + ssi > first name + ah. Lee Gun ssi and Gun ie ssi is kind of tricky, depending on whether the person used Lee Gun like a first name.
"-ie" isn't always used for one syllable names though, like Soo, since it sounds awkward out loud. "Taek-ie-ya" and "Taek-ah" have the same level of intimacy, though the same person can alternate between the two depending on the nuance of usage.

1

@myneighbortotoro and no problem!
The full name, without ssi, is commonly used between friends, as long as the age gap makes sense (rude to call someone older by their full name). For instance, when I'm with a friend, we're doing our own thing and I want to get her attention, I call her by her full name, instead of first name + ah.
So 2nd FL got jealous because Ko Mun-yeong is more intimate than Ju-ri ssi. Adding ssi in that situation is kind of like drawing a line, since they're "equals". Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk's dynamic was much more imbalanced.

1

@asterell thank you so much for taking the time to explain all this!

0

Ok, I'm gonna jump in on this and ask as well-- @asterell is the '이' (ie) just them using the 이/가 particle, or is this '이' different? @myneighbortotoro If it's just the particle, then it's less of a term of affection and more just a casual use of something called a secondary subject particle, to show who the subject of the sentence was (hense more used when referring to someone, not used face to face).

PS I've also been told before that 씨 (ssi) can be a bit informal for situations without any familiarity between people talking (like total strangers) and can sound rude (it might've been my intonation though? IDK). It's best to use some sort of official title if you can (teacher, section chief, boss/owner, CEO etc.), you can use
"teacher" or "어르신" (eoreusin) to older people. So from there to Full name + 씨, then first name + 씨, then a host of other things like 군, 양, 아/야 etc. eonni, hyung, noona and oppa also can be combined with

Side note, most all of those endings are called 호칭 "hoching" meaning title? Or something similar. Like a label for them. So you can talk with someone about what sort of "extra label" they'd feel most comfortable with you using for them.

PPS I love your username, MyNeighborTotoro!!

0

Thank you @asterell for the explanations and @myneighbortotoro for the questions. I love the richness and nuances in Korean language. I would love to one day be able to watch drama without subtitle. But my brain hurts just thinking of all the vocabs I have to memorize.

0

@cozybooks I was explaining mostly as a particle! (think u know more than I do).

0

Have you seen Moonlight drawn by clouds/Love in the moonlight? One of the things I liked the most about that sageuk was how the formal and informal were obvious. Especially when Prince Lee called the heroine by her name in the informal, very close, term of endearment, Ra-on-ah. He’s saying “I love you,” and “ I want to be close to you,” just by saying her name—-ahhh, sooooo swoony.

Re all the shows where somebody killed somebody's parent (Train, It's OK to Not Be OK, Chip In, etc)

Confucius said something along the lines of "You shall not live under the same sky as your father's killer", which I think was supposed mean revenge, but I could also spin it as "Don't stop running until you are literally not under any of the same sky".

I watched 4 episodes and it was pretty good, but somehow I wasn’t compelled to keep watching. I didn’t want to rain on beanie’s parade so I kept quiet about two minor things that bothered me. I will answer since you ask...

1) the camera angle showing the actors facing me makes me tired. I want to see them looking at each other, not at me. Nana is totally into her role but it is exhausting to see her making faces directly at me all the time.

2) superficial point, but I’m in the minority that does not like Nana’s hair. It looks like she hasn’t washed it in months. I don’t think dramas need to portray girls who are quirky or unconventional with wear weird or frumpy clothes and hairdos, just to uglify beautiful actresses.

I hope this doesn’t cause anyone offence, because both points are entirely subjective and do not reflect a negative view of the whole drama. I may watch it later to get another bean. 😬

Interesting, I think the unique camera angles are part of what a lot of us love about the show. I've never seen a drams filmed like this before and it's so refreshing to me!

And I love her hair. I don't think it looks dirty or unkempt at all, and it actually looks a lot like my own hair (but much glossier and prettier). It's making me want to grow it out and wear it natural instead of straightening it. Also, she looks like a lion, which totally suits her character!

I hope you find a drama you like soon!

6

The camera angles drove me nuts during the first few episodes (I kept tilting my head to adjust) and I thought the drama was visually very busy. For example, there would be a shot of people with crazy print shirts in front of multi-coloured bookshelves.

Then either it calmed down a bit, or I got used to it, or the story gripped me to the point where it overrode all other considerations (I don't know which one it is) and now I'm loving it.

But yes, after 4 episodes, I had the same opinion as you. Stick with it and you'll easily gain that bean.

3

LOL when DB beans become a serious motivation to finish shows you would otherwise drop...

For the trailer, Do Do Sol SOl La La Sol didn't have a lot of classical music in. I think Do You Like Brahms will be more focused on music.

I agree, I think it's shaping up to be that way... why do you think it is that similar themed dramas always end up battling it out at the same time? Do you think they actually plan it that way on purpose, or would they rather NOT have that happen, yet the stations all want in on the action so they make a drama fast to match it anyway?? I've always wondered...

I've been time-traveling back to 2012 to read recaps of Queen In-hyun's Man, and even commenting a bit. FWIW, I missed the show when it aired because I wasn't on DB at the time, and I was getting my kdramas thru cable tv which didn't carry any TvN. Even after I found out about it and eventually watched it (3 times) it didn't occur to me to check for recaps until this week. Now I have to start another rewatch while the recaps are fresh in my memory. And I have to comment because I'm me, even if it seems like a waste to type comments where hardly anybody goes any more.

I haven't been keeping track of the topics-of-the-day, but all the favorite book/series comments compel me to uh, Chip In.

My all-time favorite series is Terry Pratchett's Discworld books.

Other favorites in a reply to myself (the next best thing to talking to myself?). They probably only serve to show how far my tastes are from the typical Beanie.

In no particular order:

Larry Niven - Known Space, especially Ringworld and the early anthologies.
Patrick O'Brian - Aubrey / Maturin series (currently re-reading)
George MacDonald Fraser - Flashman series (possible next re-read). BTW, he also wrote the screenplays for the James Bond move Octopussy, and the 1973/74 movies Three Musketeers & Four Musketeers.
Bernard Cornwell - Last Kingdom series. Waiting eagerly for the next (and final?) book
Tolkien - didn't like my middle-aged re-read much, but I liked it enough in high school to secure it a permanent place on my list
Douglas Adams - Hitchhikers Guide and Dirk Gently (yes, I'm cheating by combining two series)
John Maddox Roberts - SPQR series. It's amazing how much they know about late Roman Republic intrigues, and it's cool how well some of the books fit in obscure historical details. And there are sicas.
Roger Zelazny - Amber
Tony Hillerman - Leaphorn / Chee

Thanks @lordcobol for reminding me of Tony Hillerman's mysteries. I loved them.
One mystery series I have been reading and enjoying over the last couple of years is Qui Xiaolong's The Inspector Chen mysteries. These mysteries are set in modern Shanghai. The first novel Death of a Red Heroine was published in 2000 and his tenth and most current novel Hold Your Breath, China was published this year.

PS If I was going to list my own favorite books/series, it's probably a bit classic in style, but they're all still fantastic!

-Anything by Terry Pratchett (but the Night Watch and Death novels are my favorites... and Moist VL books, and Unseen Academicals and Monstrous Regiment and--just all of his)
-Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson (CANNOT wait for the 4th Stormlight book this Fall)
-The Legend of Eli Monpress series
-Tolkien
-Anything by A.L Sowards
-the Scarlet Pimpernel books
-The Thief, the Queen of Attolia, the King of Attolia series.

Aaand I think that's mostly it for my favorites. Good stuff! Makes me want to reread ahaha

So college has me stressing out because the pandemic continues to rage here in India. There is a lot of uncertainty and I honestly don't know how I'll handle everything. Watched Before We Get Married and it was a nice change from the rom coms I usually prefer. Also I'm under Jasper Liu's spell and I keep googling pictures of him. His smile can melt stone is all I'm saying. Getting back on track, I really liked the character growth in the show. I've never abused any character as much I've abused Gao Ziyuan. She is the absolute worst.
Haven't watched this week's episodes of Memorials yet. Will start tomorrow. Thinking of dropping Flower of Evil. Already behind on it.
Jasper Liu can smile at me and I will faint on spot. Just saying.

Hello all:

Well, garden is beginning to give little harvests. And in the annals of anthropomorphic gardening: I walk to the front, back, and left side of the house. I tapped the leaves of certain plants or point to them to cheer them on with a "You're doing well" then i go on my way. Then i realize i walked past two cucumber vines without cheering them on. So i rush back, for fear of them feeling rejected, and tap them then tell them they're doing well. Note: i don't go on the right side of the house to cheer on the plants there because i understand that they don't need me to cheer them on everyday. I just have to cheer up the plants in my path because i don't want them thinking i rejected them when they see me passing by without acknowledging them. Yeah, i do this with people and animals as well. Sanity is not my forte..but at least the plants are feeling loved. It is what it is. Just discovered there is such a tasty but fungal thing called Corn Smut and am hoping never to get any on my Mexican corn.

Dramas:
Am so waiting for Stranger 2 to come tomorrow to Netflix.
Flower of Evil: Is it a korean version of Dexter? His dead serial killer dad seems to be following him around. I don't think he kills people normally but maybe he might because he has to but...well maybe...soon....But it would be good if he were the serial killers son and somehow not a murderer. Then it would show that you can be the son of a murderer and not be a murderer. Too much genetic serial killer stories in kdramas. But if he is a serial killer or realizes that he likes serial killing and starts serial killing, i'm still gonna be on his side. Which just goes to show how powerful having goodwill toward an actor is. We all love joongi so we'll accept him killing folks. Hopefully, he will only kill bad people. That's what Dexter did. I do like it though if kdramas don't follow the exact plot of a western drama. Apparently, this is the kdrama season where psychopaths, narcissists, and sociopaths get healed through the power of love. Darn, the goodwill we give to main characters in a story..and to the hottie actor who plays them.

Chip In -- Trying to catch up. This is what Knives Out wishes it had been.

Train -- My drama crack. I guess i was wrong when i hoped time would turn back. Bummer. There must be a way to get both women to have their guy in their respective world.

Cdramas:
I spend a lot of time trying to find certain dramas alas. Crossfire, for one. Now...Sleepless Princess. Sleepless Princess is supposedly about a princess in ancient china whose day changes when she dreams. She has to live with the consequences of her dream when she wakes each day. If she tries to change things, she turns into one of the animals of the chinese zodiac. She has also been married off to a good person whom she isn't interested in and who isn't interested in her. Yeah, they'll fall in love. Typical stuff but yeah, i'm ready for it. I am subscribed to hotpot,...

Thank you. It's great being called adorable at my age. Am aiming for adorable halmoni. The trouble is now i'm learning about all the good properties of weeds that i can't hate them as much as i should. Now i'm talking to the mullein and plantain major. I should rip out the grass but grass is such good ground cover and protects the roots of certain plants like tomato. It keeps the ground from drying out under the hot summer sun. Grass is everywhere in my garden. Hubby planted a flower garden and i planted cucumbers and sunflowers in the middle of a grassy section. Finding cucumbers and muskmelons under the grass is a bit taxing.

I have taught 3 online classes for the total of 7 hours today and that is why I'm sitting in front of my notebook in my room, denying to talk to anyone and just siting silently and typing. I have no voice left and I realized that 7 hours a day is too much. Managing an online class with up to 30 students for almost 3 hours is hard enough. Having 2 of those courses per day plus one more private, online lesson in the evening is simply just too much.

My notebook died the day before yesterday and I got into a small, car accident yesterday. This week has been something.

Anyway, amid these strange global and national situations we're all facing, I'm happy I found DB some years ago. DB keeps me sane, period. Thanks a lot to all the staff, lovely Beanies and the peaceful environment where people comment with respect. Also, thank you Kdramas: You and your quotes (sometimes your wardrobe and oppas keep me sane.)

I feel for you. I'm currently surfing through the comments while I wait for a zoom appointment with a student. I've been walking out to a semi-deserted University three days a week to tutor two students who are struggling with pre-University classes. One has had only a very rare experience of school, having belonged to a travelling Indigenous dance family and the other never went past grade 10, which is what you do when you are 15 her. I've been stressing out about them and when I left the other day I felt a sore throat coming on. One COVID-19 test and a negative result later, I'm good, but still warding off the usual season's flu. My student in the zoom meeting in an hour is a published poet, a young creative Torres Strait Islander student who is struggling to finish her u/g degree. I've read The Hate Race, Wide Sargasso Sea and Beloved in the last week or so, to refresh my memory, so I can talk to her about her essays. I'm also adjusting the citations style of my manuscript for the publisher.

DB is a life/sanity saver. It's so good to read other people's views and so many are perceptive and mind opening. I've been watching Train, Flower of Evil, and I've finished Stranger/FOS1 as a prelude to the next season. I watched Herstory last night. I knew it would be hard to watch and I needed to be in the right mood to see it. It was brilliant. I should do some housework too.

Does anyone know what building was used to film the psychiatrist's clinic in the kdrama repeat 365? I admire its splendor architecture and have always wondered what it really is.

Thirty but nothing: cdrama finished! it was a fun drama, liked the characters, the fashion, and the ending was wrapped up nicely. A bit too nicely. Didn't find the plot believable at times, but I was thoroughly invested in the stories of the three ladies. A recommended watch.

Bad Kids: I have two episodes left of this short suspenseful Cdrama. Since there are only 12 episodes, there are no filler scenes which I appreciate. Thank you to the beanie that brought my attention to this hidden gem.

The story of Ming Lan: I've postponed watching this series as it is 78 episodes long! The beginning was slow but after episode 10, the pacing picks up and I now understand why it is one of the most beloved series. I am now more than half way through and don't want it to end. It is a rewarding watch if you are patient. Very tightly told story, high production values and well developed characters. This is one of those shows where you feel a strong satisfaction when the villains get their comeuppance. It is from the same producer as NIF, so no wonder I love it!

My unfamiliar family: think i have 4 episodes left but just can't seem to get into it. I know many beanies love this series, but I found it boring and depressing. Shelving this for now.

SBS, MBC and KBS recently announced that they will cutting in half the number of dramas to be shown in 2021.

This begs many questions. Will cable channels follow suit? Will the networks put their eggs (resources) in bigger productions (with bigger stars) to gain better ratings and advertisers? Will the quality of dramas suffer? Will we lose the under-the-radar series gems? What will happen to the short series K-drama specials which often deal with a greater variety of story material?

This also means fewer opportunities for lesser-known actors, writers, and producers, which is a huge pity. I fear we're just going to be seeing even more of the same names over and over again.

This is is very sad... But did watch on KBS world a while back about the difference between cable network and public network. Dramas on cable network is payed as whole by the production company. Where public networks pay around half of the production. So no wonder they are even more affected by ratings... SBS-KBS-MBC have got together to launch streaming site Wavve last year for domestic audience. I read the head of wavve said they planed to produce dramas, so I wonder if we gonna see them produce dramas that gonna also air on one of the public networks. We already have the SF8 project. Or maybe we gonna see more like what happened with Backstreet rocky airing on multiple networks. Maybe we gonna see more collaboration like this next year.

2

Required fields are marked *

This could be an opportunity for the networks to put forward higher quality dramas, but it probably won't happen. We might not lose the under-the-radar gems. It seems like the big name actors and writers have been going to cable the last few years while the Big 3 has had quite a few dramas with up and comers and newbie writers. I can see that continuing. Big productions have been a bust for the public networks this year. I wish they'd learn from that.

3

Maybe a lot of writers/PD chooses to work for cable TVs like TvN, JTBC, OCN and Netflix than working with the big 3 that is why they don’t get a lot of good dramas nowadays??? 🤔
Interesting decision...

Isn't it funny how the tables have turned? It used to be that the likes of tvN and JTBC were for the lower-budget dramas with more newbie/lesser-known actors, but for a while now they've been the ones attracting the bigger stars and getting Chungmuro actors to do dramas, with super high production values.

The same thing happened with American television. Cable produced some prestige dramas and movie stars started doing dramas on cable and then streaming.

We have a zillion streaming sites now. I see S. Korea going in that direction.

I see them going the streaming sites route too amd while obviously streaming sites/apps are the future, I wonder if they'll make it as accessible to us like iqiyi or we tv from china. The American options aren't at all available for free but these two and other chinese options have free, vip and vvip offers. I'm not at all against having paid options but having to pay several streaming services is too much.

2

@wapzy I think I just felt premonition-like terrible goosebumps down my arms... I could also see Korea head in that direction, and dread that I might not be able to see as many dramas in the future because of all the various streaming platforms that would require a subscription... *cries silently into the interwebs*

1

I think long term streaming sites are going to have to start bundling (or just eating each other) like pay tv used to - because not enough people will want to support multiple streaming sites. We pay for three currently (+one I leech off my sister) and they’d be the first to go if we needed to make savings.

Dang... that's so sad! My already drama-starved self is already wondering what I'll do next year. LOW single digit shows out there, that are so good!

I thought it was supposed to be the story through Wat's eyes but I didn't see much of that.
I doubt there will be a strong storyline or arc, but i was just happy to see their happy faces. Apparently I developed some affection for these boys from the first series.
It is only 5 eps I think so ill probably watch the whole however it goes.
