Namgoong Min returns to dramaland in tvN’s police mystery Awaken

The first teaser for Awaken (formerly Day and Night) has been revealed. The drama is about a 28-year-old village murder case that has relevance to a present-day case unfolding now. Namgoong Min (Stove League) stars as the extremely capable team leader of a special police detective task force.
In the teaser, Namgoong Min strides down a dark abandoned warehouse with blood dripping from his right hand. His narration plays: “I’ve decided I no longer believe in God…” as a SWAT team surrounds him. Cheekily, he reaches into his jacket pocket, and their weapons go up, trained on him. He takes out a pink lollipop and begins licking with a cocky confidence, and the narration ends: “So whose fault is it for throw me into the world?”
I have so many questions: Who hurt his bloodied hand? Why is Namgoong Min’s character, a policeman, going up against the police SWAT team? What made him think aggravating the SWAT team by taking out a lollipop was a good idea? Hopefully, these will all be answered by the drama later this year.
Originally Han Ye-seul was attached to this project as the female lead, but it looks like Seolhyun (My Country) will be headlining alongside Namgoong Min.
Upcoming Monday-Tuesday tvN drama Awaken will begin airing late November.

I'm glad they didn't pull Seol Hyun's out and reshoot her part.
I've been waiting for this since I heard he was cast after Stove Leauge.
Anything Namgoong Min, I'll watch.
Supporting actors sound great too.

The lollipop bit gives me Chief Kim vibes, which is a great thing, since Namgoong Min shines the most as characters that don't take themselves very seriously. You have piqued my interest, drama.

It looks fun. You forget Lee Chung Ah! She always picks interesting characters. I like this trio of actors.
Their interview was fun to watch, they look confortable together.

She should be the lead imho. I hope this is an ensemble drama with Lee Chung Ah as part of a main trio... Seolhyun is just not on NGM's level.

Hmm. I find Namgoong Min's appeal a bit odd. I love his performances in more darker or dramatic roles but pretty much cannot tolerate him when doing "quirky." This character seems to meld the two?
As a big fan of 20th Century Boy and Girl, I am disappointed I will not see Han Ye-Seul again. Given the considerable differences in age and, ahem, acting styles between her and Seolhyun, I wonder how much they will re-tool the character?

Ditto. Han Ye-Seul's character was tailor made for her. Korean-American character. I don't get her career choices at all. Why turn down a cable series on tvN that is in a genre that does well critically/ratings wise, and with a very accomplished and respected male lead?? Truly mind boggling on her part.

NAm Goong MIn is a great actor and I can watch drama that he is in, he is just underrated but acting wise he is really good!! And all his project is watchable and interesting.

I totally agree with you. Somehow, I think NGM is quite underrated. There are some other actors that I too always wonder why their projects haven’t become a mega hit yet: Some of these include NGM, Ji Sung and Yoo Seung-ho.

Hmm, honestly I don't think he's underrated at all. Maybe by international standards but he hit it bigger way later like by age 37/38 (Western Age). He was always working in bit/2nd ML roles, but Remember gave him a career resurgence again.
He's been nominated by the Baeksang multiple times, and his dramas since Remember with him in the main role from then on, have been huge hits both critically/ratings wise. I think he's well appreciated for his talents in Korea, if any 2nd ML's want to move up career wise, I would check NGM's career and see how its done.

He won a Daesang Award in his drama Good Manager Chief Kim and He won awards in his drama Hot Stove League. He can act whatever role villain, charming, comedic, loveable role etc. He is really great actor

And FYI The Girl Who sees smells first gave him the the limelight because of his Villain role in there and then Remember came in a short while after The girl who sees smells drama cause he shots those two drama in the same year.

AWAKEN has been on my radar and I eagerly await its arrival. As usual I hope there won't be an availability issue.
I love Namgoong Min's voice.
I will date myself. Since I haven't seen CHIEF KIM my first thought in seeing NM with the lollipop was "Who loves ya', baby" himself Theo KOJACK (Telly Savalas):

Namgoong Min has been choosing solid dramas since his career breakthrough in Remember (2015). Not a fan of the FL (MEH). Still can't believe that Han Ye Seul turned down the FL which is a Korean-American. Does she not want to act anymore or what? I know she did a SBS Drama last yr, but I miss her. It's a shame she turned down this role to be on YouTube (She makes a lot of $$) instead. Waste of talent/beauty.
