Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 7-13, 2020

It’s suddenly raining dramas, with three additions to this week’s chart. We now have rom-com True Beauty, office drama Hush, and historical/fantasy/gender-bender (whozits and whatzits galore) drama Mr. Queen. Can you tell which one I’m the most curious about? Others must be curious too, because Mr. Queen premiered to a whopping 8 percent!

The additions from last week haven’t budged much, with Awaken still around 4 percent and Cheat On Me around 5 percent. Meanwhile, dramas Kairos and The Spies Who Loved Me are really trudging towards the finish line. Penthouse and Homemade Love Story are the only out of the Big Three (KBS, SBS, MBC) that are performing well.

I am loving uncanny encounter sooo much! The mentor-mentee relationship between Mo-tak and So-mun is very heartwarming. I am also loving the subtle new romances that are starting with Mo-tak and the female detective. I just love their interactions together. Now that we are going deep into the mystery, lets see how the lives of the counters are connected. Gosh, next week can't come faster?

I find "The Spies Who Loved Me" my drama comfort food, enjoyable little fun. Too bad it's only on iWIYI, so I have to watch on laptop or iPad...

All the comments I've read about Spies have been positive. I didn't check it out because of lack of time and lack of interest in the leads, but I'll have to put it on my to-watch list!

I highly recommend it. I'm genuinely surprised that I'm as into it as I am. I liked the first few eps, then got really hooked. It's both funny and thoughtful.

TSWLM is really good and the ratings are so sad. This will discourage writers from writing anything different. Spies in my opinion, has had a new take on all previous tropes, the story is fresh but the tropes are old but they are recycled ina way that they all seem valid and not outdated.

Over on Soompi, they're reporting that Mr. Queen debuted with the second highest ever ratings for a tvN drama (after Mr. Sunshine).

My heart breaks for Kairos ratings *cries in a corner*

Fighting Kairos! Hopefully the ratings pick up a bit in the final 2 weeks~ I feel for the crew and cast...the reviews and ratings are so different. But people will likely benchmark dramas based on viewer ratings 😔. The same goes to Spies. I mostly see positive reviews but the ratings are low too. Are kviewers just avoiding MBC in general? 🤔🥺

And...congrats to Mr Queen! It got 8% for ep 1~ 🥳

I usually don't care about ratings, but I'm sad Kairos isn't doing better. It's been so good. Spies sounds good too. Honestly, out of the Big 3, I watched and enjoyed more of MBC's dramas but apparently, Koreans did not.

I think MBC has a marketing problem. Their dramas (especially Kairos) tend to get good critical feedback. I really don't think they have lower quality dramas than other channels. You might be able to say it's a genre thing, but Alice got good ratings while also being a time-travel show. You might be able to say it's because they don't have as big of names, but it's become clear lately that you don't need big names to get good ratings (The Uncanny Counter being a current example) and big names don't always equal good ratings. The only thing I can think of is marketing and promotion. Or maybe they need a screeching makjang like Penthouse to put them back in the public conscious? Lol.

They definitely do have a marketing problem coz they had great scripts and production quality this year. For example, they don't promote their dramas locally in the variety shows despite having the best rated shows. But also, I think it's because they completely focused on genre dramas this year and had less of family based dramas. Even dramas like Alice had very average ratings compared to other SBS dramas this year, so considering that it did not exactly do well. Also, MBC's strong point has always been saeguk dramas but I'm not sure why they stopped producing them. And makjangs will probably help them out as well.

Sageuks are super expensive to produce. And it's hard to include PPL in a sageuk unless it's a modern-fusion sageuk.

@katakwasabi But considering that they reduced the number of dramas and the 15 million budget for black sun, they could have gone for a sageuk drama or at least a makjang coz they really need to bounce back in terms of ratings to save their channel.
Because personally I feel that MBC's worst rated drama this year is much better than most of the better rated channels in other channels in terms of both script and production. And I say this after watching a lot of dramas from all channels. So I would like it if they try to improve on their ratings by creating viewer attracting dramas like penthouse or like their older dramas like moon embracing the sun so that the other dramas they produce don't get passed on because they are good.

Another thing is...MBC lacks drama reruns unlike other channels. Knetz complain about this a lot, they say MBC should increase drama reruns like other channels because thats the best way to promote a drama. For example SBS airs Penthouse nearly every hour on 3 different channels, similar to KBS drama reruns. TvN reruns both ep of the week (back to back) nearly every day before the new ep comes out. OCN rerun Uncanny Encounter back to back on several channels daily, in addition to it being on Netflix.

MBC on the hand...has so little drama reruns and limited access. For exp: Kairos ep 13 airs on Monday evening. Ep 13 rerun is on Tuesday morning. Ep 14 airs on Tuesday evening. Ep14 rerun is on the following Monday. The only back to back rerun is on Saturday. No reruns on other days. From my observation, little reruns is applicable to all MBC dramas 🤓.

MBC has made less but quality dramas. My only issue with shows getting less ratings is that it discourages writers to write anything interesting and different. They all know makjang works and we may just keep saying several other forms of Penthouse and not many dramas like Kairos and Spies.

KAIROS fan here although I haven't been commenting on the recaps. The writing and the acting have been superb.
Another drama from 2020 that I really enjoyed and thought was well written and acted but suffered with terrible ratings is YSY's TRAIN (OCN).

The 2 other MBC dramas I watched and enjoyed this year are 365: REPEAT THE YEAR and THE GAME: TOWARDS ZERO. Cops/crime/mystery is my favorite genre. I watched 12 of those dramas this year and liked all of them.

Happy to see something hit the 20% mark even though I will probably never understand the love for dramas like Penthouse.

Sad about Kairos ratings; The Spies Who Loved Me's too even though I haven't watched it yet. Everything I've heard has been good.

Good for Mr. Queen! The Uncanny Counter too. Broke OCN's ratings record in only six episodes!

Yay for both The Uncanny Counter and Mr. Queen!
I love both shows a lot!
As I predicted, The Uncanny Counter is now highest rating drama in OCN history! They deserve it!
And Mr. Queen... OMG it's sooooo good!

Fly Dragon aired last Saturday with its lowest ratings yet (3.9% and 5.0%). It will skip the next three weeks as they try to replace Bae Sung-woo with... Lee Jung-jae. Very laughable to cast a big-shot actor who only agreed to do one drama over the past decade as a mere replacement. Fly Dragon will now end during the last weekend of January.

Get Revenge's decline hastened because of Mr. Queen. Saturday's episode got 2.1% and 2.5%, while Sunday's slid to 1.5% and 2.0%.

The Uncanny Counter's 7.7% rating last Sunday was the highest ever for an OCN drama, breaking the record of Voice Season 2.

BSW is an artist under Artist Company. Lee Jung Jae is Artist Company co-CEO. I personally think it's a firefighting strategy for the company. Plus, LJJ worked with the team in Aide.

I imagine there is probably some kind of penalty included in an actor's contract in case something like this happens. That was my first thought when I read the Lee Jung Jae news.

"The Uncanny Counter" just broke OCN's highest ratings and I understand why. What a show!! 👏👏
The story, visuals, fight choreos, acting, the chemistry between actors..everything's so good. Especially Jo Byung-gyu. For a 24 years old grown man, he plays a very convincing highschooler. His sobs in ep 6 wrecked me..not overly done or weird at all..that was a kid crying and I cried with him..😭😭
I still wish we had recaps though! 🙁

What is it about Penthouse? The story is so melodramatic it is ridiculous. The villain and villainess are SO bad, the Good Mother has catastrophe after catastrophe but rises to the challenge every time. The characters are completely predictable, as is the plot. Everyone is wearing buckets of makeup, and they must spend HOURS with their hairdressers! The children are either nauseatingly cruel and atrocious or angelically heroic. The mad teacher with the Barbie-doll wig is about as convincing in that school as Masaai Tribesman, and yet nobody seems to question him - too busy plotting against the Good Mother. NOBODY is normal. Every child has the voice of a 25-year-old trained opera-singer, and they produce those beautiful vocals without appearing to take a decent breath - it's magic!. The Evil Adultress mother pops into this house to meet her lover, you see them setting off for the (presumably?) bedroom, and they reappear without a hair out of place, or a lipstick smudge, perfect eye make up - I mean, really, surely the man's hair would be just the teeniest bit untidy? BUT I CAN'T STOP WATCHING IT! It is horribly fascinating, and for once there is a good chance that the characters you particularly dislike could get murdered in the next episode. AND I'M PART OF THE 22% WHO ARE WATCHING IT. I'm so ashamed of myself! I could go on, but the English subtitles for the next episode should be up by now so, excuse me if I run away to watch the next episode.............
