Kim So-hyun, Ji-soo play princess and the fool in upcoming KBS drama

Kim So-hyun (Tale of Nokdu) and Ji-soo (When I Was the Most Beautiful) in a romantic folktale sageuk. What’s not to love? New stills for KBS’s upcoming drama River Where the Moon Rises have been released.

Kim So-hyun plays the beautiful, intelligent, and a little power-hungry Princess Pyeonggang. In this drama adaptation of the folktale, she uses On Dal’s heart to advance her own goals, but in the process, falls in love herself. On Dal, the ever-sacrificing idiot who becomes a respected general, will be played by Ji-soo.

According to previous reports, Kang Haneul (When the Camellia Blooms) will be making an appearance at the beginning of the drama as Ji-soo’s father. His role will be instrumental in developing the arcs of our two characters. Lee Ji-hoon (ill You Have Dinner With Me) will play an elite general for Goguryeo, and Choi Yu-hwa (My Dangerous Wife) will play a person with special skills and hidden secrets.

To be honest costume-wise, Ji-soo looks exactly like his grown-up character from Scarlet Heart: Ryeo which makes sense since they’re pulling from the same Goguryeo era. He’s still rocking the long mane, but I do wish they would have left out that weird baby-Wolverine sideburn-facial hair. At first glance, I thought that Kim So-hyun looked a lot like Jin Se-yeon, but the intensity in her expression is definitely all her own.

Monday-Tuesday KBS drama River Where the Moon Rises, directed by PD Yoon Sang-ho (Saimdang, Light’s Diary) and written by Han Ji-hoon (9.9 Billion Won Woman), is slated to air in early 2021, after New Secret Royal Investigator finishes its run.

Hmm, I can't say I see Ji Soo as malformed and ugly as a donkey but Kim So Hyun as an impetuous, headstrong princess seems like casting gold. But do we really need another (HISTORICAL SPOILER) heartbreaking ending for a Ji Soo character?

Maybe "drama adaptation" = drama license to rewrite the ending.

I have a feeling they might end the drama before the tragic ending. It would be implied but not shown perhaps.

The sibling marriage in Moon Lovers between Wang So and his half sister was very, very, very awkward. Too bad the drama didn't end before that

To be honest, I'm not a fan of his facial hair. I think they are trying to put Jisoo full on character. On Dal is supposed to be ugly and an idiot, so I guess they made him look like that.

As for Kim So hyun, I didn't recognize her at first. She looks so mature!

Wow~ I seriously did not recognize Kim So Hyun!! This drama sorta flew under the radar for me, but they definitely got my attention now with these stills.

The leads look good together. Haven’t seen Ji Soo as the main lead in a show so I’m happy for him and hoping this drama is a good one.

Lee Ji Hoon really has this bad boy demeanor down.

I was thinking kind of the same thing about Lee Ji Hoon, only instead of bad boy I was thinking cold, selfish, self-absorbed villain who's going to make trouble for our heroes. Hmm, sound familiar? He sure does have that look down.

I don't how obsessive his love would be here...but yes his character will definitely want to have Pyeonggang. If anyone was interested, these stills also came with taglines. So LJH/Go Geon's was “I had everything and needed nothing more, but that all changed when I met you.”

For the others:
KSH/Pyeonggang: “I will drive out the greedy and disloyal subjects and become the empress to recover Goguryeo’s lost honor.”
JS/On Dal: “I will drive out the greedy and disloyal subjects and become the empress to recover Goguryeo’s lost honor.”
CYH/Hae Mo Yong: “I’ve found myself gazing at your back turned on me as you face someone else.” (she's referring to Go Geon)

2

LOL oops, JS/On Dal is supposed to be “It’s alright if I’m a fool. I only fight in order to protect someone.”

And then the OTP pic came with “I become someone different when I’m with you”.

Kim so-hyun has completely disappeared into her character I'm very impressed. Reading the comments about the writer I told my self not to have any expectations but then they went and gave us these stills which look amazing and now I'm torn.

I don't know exactly... perhaps I don't like how On-dal is portrayed in the tale? Or perhaps I just think the story is overdone? But either way, I'm still excited for this! I wish it was still called Cut by the Heart - it's a far more memorable title than River Where the Moon Rises, and it set epic expectations for me.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah, Babo Ondal and Fairy/Woodcutter are so embedded in the national zeitgeist and the same basic tropes are threaded through so many books/movies/dramas we enjoy today, I guess the origin story can seem cliched. I just never thought of it that way. I mean, how often do you hear someone say, "That Robin Hood story? Meh."

2

reply

Required fields are marked *

Hahaha, that's true - it's hard to remember sometimes that the original is why we've loved the story, and it's the copies and adaptations that make us tire of the story.

0

But, but, but....the River Where the Moon Rises sounds so poetic and meaningful especially since it's a combo of their names! The 강 from Pyeonggang which means River and then the 달 from On Dal which means Moon. And based on the premise, since Pyeonggang is going to make a general out of On Dal the title is sort of expressing that too...she'll be the river where On Dal can rise? And vice versa, he can be the moon shining over her river?

Required fields are marked *

Oh I didn't know that. Thank you for explaining the title. I already liked it actually. It sounds very poetic and romantic yet heart breaking. Maybe I'm over thinking it. Ha ha

5

Ahaha, well it's not an official explanation but that's how i interpreted the title. Exactly, it lets the title have a deeper meaning since its using same part of their names together to create a new and different meaning.

3

Oh, thank you, I didn't think of that! That makes it much easier to love the title. The point was just there are already so many sageuk titles with the word 'moon' in specifically - Moonlight Drawn by Heart, Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Moon Embracing the Sun...

1

Haha, agreed...the word moon is definitely overused when it comes to sageuk titles. At first, I probably had same reaction as you but then fell in love with it when I realized that the title can work on so many different levels - a play on 2nd syllable of their names, metaphors/analogies for the otp, their relationship and what they mean to each other etc. I heart it.

2

Omg thank you so much for this context

1

I didn't know that. Thank you for sharing your interpretation. It makes the title more meaningful.

1

That intense stare has always been there whenever Kim Sohyun and Sageuk meets but she looks so mature in this one wow. Jisoo and Kim Sohyun managed to bring tears in a two episodes high school drama that barely has any romance, and I think with a revengeful sageuk they would rip my heart apart.
And fingers-crossed for this one because the last time I remember being THIS excited for a sageuk that nothing would go wrong bcs of its leads was when Yoo Seungho and Kim Sohyun met and we all knew how that went down 🤢

Also isn't it interesting that Kim Yoojung ALSO signed up for Sageuk. Oof one of the best two actresses of their age group, doing the best genre they do, can't wait!

I disagree. Both of KSH and KYJ dramas as adults haven't been huge true, but KSH latest dramas such as Nokdu and Love Alarm had more success (and had more love) than Clean and Rookie. Pior to this, KYJ had success with Moonlight in 2016 and KSH with her role in Goblin also in 2016.

I will be there for RIVER and I hope KBS (part of Kocowa for which I pay a subscription) doesn’t give me availability angst or should I say ‘agita’ like it is giving me with ROYAL SECRET AGENT since RSA will only be available outside SK on iQIYI.

Checking today NF is not available on Netflix (USA) .
I am a paid subscriber to OnDemandKorea Plus (of course to avoid commercials) and in 2019 watched NF there. In 2020 the only drama I have watched on ODK is THE GOOD DETECTIVE which is one of my favorites of the year. I wish that ODK would invest more for English subbing.
Then at ODK was the whole JOSEON SURVIVAL mess that was very annoying for JS fans.

I know Kim so-hyun is a great actress but still caught off guard by just how good she is every single time. When I first saw the still cut I thought it was Jang hy-uk because this is the kind of intensity I associate with him but was pleasantly surprised to see it was Kim so-hyun. This character description sounds amazing and very different from anything I've seen her do before. I haven't seen Ji-soo in anything since 2017 but I loved them together in Page Turner and I can already feel their chemistry again. Everyone looks great in these cuts but I'm still going to try and keep my expectations low and hope for the best.

Ah whoops, I guess I was mesmerized by the stills that I overlooked the writer. I watched his most recent drama 9.9 Billion Won Woman and it wasn't great or satisfying in the end. Parts of it was interesting and the lead couple had amazing chemistry, but now I'm gonna lower my expectations with this new project. (This was where I had also seen Lee Ji Hoon play a sleazy, despicable character.)

I'm disappointed every time I hear how bad the writer is because the characters and the premise are amazing and it's unfair that one person could ruin the whole thing. Yea, I mean it's not like it's a guarantee either that it will be good when you have a good writer and good director, sometimes they still turn out bad. So I'm hoping here, the director and writer somehow make magic together and prove us wrong. I'll be glad to be proven wrong.

I'm desperately hoping that the writer just follows the book/source material that the drama is supposed to be based on (not the folktale). I'm crossing my fingers that maybe he'll be better if he has a source material to work with.

Yes, so the production company for this drama (Victory Contents) encouraged people a few months ago to read the book called Princess Pyeonggang by Choi Sa Gyu (the book has 2 parts). Apparently this book took 25 years to complete and it retold the folktale in the perspective that I'm assuming the drama is taking. There aren't any english translations of the book so it's hard to say how faithful the drama is going to be to the source material.

What a cast! I don't know what's like Choi Yu-hwa as an actress is but she is definitely gorgeous in the stills.
"She uses Ondal’s heart to advance her own goals, but in the process, falls in love herself." A dramaland catnip trope for me.
However, I decided to stay calm about this drama and show little enthusiasm for it, because I don't want to get burned again by the dear kdrama writers.
