Lee Sang-yoon and Kim Ah-joong being courted for new SBS drama

Lee Sang-yoon, Kim Ah-joong

One The Woman is an upcoming drama about an amnesiac who ends up switching places with a chaebol daughter-in-law who looks exactly like her. Currently, Kim Ah-joong (Live Up to Your Name) has been reported as the frontrunner for this role. Lee Sang-yoon (VIP) is also being courted as the male lead.

Kim Ah-joong’s character is the only daughter of a mafia leader. She’s also a prosecutor that investigates corruption, bribery, and prostitution. Somehow, she loses her memory and switches places with a quiet daughter-in-law of a chaebol family. Lee Sang-yoon’s character is a chaebol who has never forgotten his first love; according to the reports, it’s not clear whether he is actually her husband or another chaebol in their circle.

In any case, I’d be interested to see this match-up take place. If they both accept it will be the first time they’ve ever worked together. I do hope that Lee Sang-yoon’s character is more like his My Daughter Seo-young persona than his shady VIP or weak Defendant personas. I like his acting, but he does shine better when his female counterpart is also a strong actress. As for Kim Ah-joong, I’ve loved her in comedies (e.g. 200 Pound Beauty), so hopefully the script will lean zany and not too melo.

One The Woman, directed by Choi Young-hoon (High Society, Good Casting) and written by Kim Yoon, will begin airing on SBS sometime in the latter half of next year.

Kim Ah-joong was lovely and her scenes with Kim Nam-gil were heart-fluttering in Live Up to Your Name. I’m not a fan of the potential ML, so I’ll wait for more confirmation from Beanies before considering starting this one.

Yeah same here. I like KAJ, she should have a bigger career tbh. never felt much of an inclination to LSY as an actor. The only thing I like is that he went to SNU, and graduated with a Physics Degree after 10 yrs lol. But yeah, he always gets outshined by his more formidable female stars in terms of the character/acting.

I just know that he had been dating UEE for a while. I guess my dislike for him stemmed from them breaking up; I liked UEE very much in Ojakgyo Brothers and some other projects she was in so. Sorry LSY. 😅

Haha, UEE is doing better now which is good. Yeah they were random at first, but UEE also graduated from a good university. As for LSY, no comment. He's neither here or there for me as an actor lol.

OMG, I just realized she was offered the main FL in Another Oh Hae Young :O And she turned it down, which in hindsight prob. would've propelled her career into new heights. Instead, it made Seo Hyun Jin a star. Shows how turning down a role/project, could be the opportunity for another start to shine/break through big time. Still, though if she did AOHY, she would be a bigger star.

Kim Nam-gil is not only hot/charming/talented, but also really funny and a philanthropist too! I love how much he gives back, and has his own organization to help/give back to kids in arts. I remember he did a film called No Regret before he was well known, and one can see his potential. Him and Son Ye Jin (Rumored) made for a perfect couple, in both wits/talent ah.

He is a very talented man indeed. I know about this philanthropist organisation too. It was a very thoughtful project.

I'm happy that the actors I adore are doing good stuff and doing great whatever they're doing! 😊

Me too! after her chemistry with KNG in deserving of the name I’ve been excitedly waiting for a new drama by her but this is quite disappointing because the plot sounds so old school and messy and I’ve never really been impressed by Lee sang Yoon as an actor but regardless I might watch this just for her.

I have been a big fan of Lee Sang Yoon ever since I got caught up on Liar Game, Second 20's and On the Way to the Airport all within a three month span a number of years ago. But I detested Whisper and VIP and did not think much of About Time. Unfortunately, this looks more like the latter group than the former.

I did recall both leads are from SKY universities with degrees in some pretty difficult disciplines -- brainy cast!

"I did recall both leads are from SKY universities with degrees in some pretty difficult disciplines -- brainy cast!" Yess!! Here for more brainy sexy people lol!!! I feel like Korea for its high stance on higher education, rarely do we see actors graduate from SKY universities. Whereas for British actors, we see so many of them graduate from Oxbridge. Of course, there's a lot of classism involved too.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I get the impression that the more common route for an aspiring actor in Korea is to go straight from high school to a performing arts / media-focused HEI like Seoul Institute of the Arts or Dongguk University. So maybe it's not that many Korean actors aren't good enough for SKY, but that they prefer to start at Dongguk etc asap precisely because they are serious about their chosen profession.

Korea Institute of the Arts is more like the Julliard of Korea. I guess after that Seoul Institute and others follow suit. But generally once actors go through that path, typically they go to theatre/musicals where they get picked up from there. Sungkyunkwan University/Ehwa University are also two great/prestige colleges in Korea. I see a lot of stars graduate from Sungkyunkwan University. Ahn Nae Sang (Yes our fav ahjussi actor!) also graduated from Yonsei, and knew Bong Joon Ho in college!

Yeah, it's interesting b/c Western actors many of them graduate from Ivy League colleges, by either taking a hiatus from acting or before they go into it. Dunno why but it's intriguing to me given the culture there of SKY/academics/celebrity. No wonder Kim Tae Hee is lauded there, she graduated from SNU and is an iconic beauty. Even if her acting isn't up to that level, b/c of those things, I get it. Lee Honey also graduated from SNU too!

Brainy actors+looks+acting is something I really respect, b/c most just rest on their looks. So when I found out a star has went to a top uni/higher education, but is also talented/beautiful, I'm like "Come on, it's so unfair" but in a good way lol. Smart is sexy, y'all!

Heh yes I was pretty surprised when I discovered Ahn Nae-sang read theology at Yonsei. With regard to ahjusshi like him and Bong Joon-ho: again, I'm not sure about this, but the "famous alumni" sections of the SKY universities' Wikipedia entries suggest that SKY grads are a bit more common among the older generations of actors. In contrast, there seem to be hordes of actors in their mid 30s - early 50s who went to the more specialised HEIs like Seoul Institute of the Arts.

Yes actors who are good at other things besides acting tend to impress me no end too, like Tom Hiddleston and his double first from Cambridge. But as you mentioned, it gets problematic when class and money are involved. It's expensive enough to go to Cambridge without the additional expense of RADA.

1

@knewbie I believe it's b/c of the democratization of Korea in the 80s, and that period in Korea in the 50s-70s. Where students were of the politically conscious kind, and SKY was where the thinkers would be.

I keep seeing Seoul Institute being mentioned, when Korea National University of Arts gets referenced more as the top one. Googling, Seoul was formed in 1962, and Korea in 1993.

Lee Je Hoon! Went to Korea University studying Biotechnology before transferring over to Korea's National University of the Arts. Woah! In H-wood, tons of Asian actors went to IVY's in STEM fields as a safety net.

Yeah, I too get highly impressed when actors get high level marks in university esp. a competitive uni in a hard degree. But yes, Ox-bridge actors are so many it's like the pre-req lol to be a British actor. It's like first graduate from Ox-bridge, and then go to RADA/Royal Academy/Drama school after college. I personally find British actors really incredible, due to their Classical/Theatre background. For them it's about the craft rather than the celebrity, which I found in Korea, its more focused on becoming a star than being an actual actor.

But yes, tons of classism involved there too, even worse in the U.K than Korea. As many British actors go to posh schools/boarding schools leaving many of its working class actors a harder path to moving up.

I've heard that ChungAng is also pretty well known for uts theatre department

Yep! A lot of actors/directors have graduated from there! I also see Hanyang University too. Basically, if your university is still in Seoul that's good. It may not be SKY, but it's probably like UCLA/UC like schools in Korea.

Wait Kim Ahjoong also graduated from SKY????

Indeed. Beauty + Brains + Talent. I just can't believe she's not getting better deals than she is now. She's worked with Signal writer on Sign, was in a blockbuster film, and such. K-entertainment sure is one fickle place ://

2

She's amazing in 200-pound Beauty and Punch, which means she is great at both goofy physical comedy and serious drama. She does seem rather underrated.

Ooof!! Punch is STILL one of my favorite legal/thriller. Kim Ahjoong and Kim Raewon BARELY had any romantic scene but their chemistry💜💜💜💜

Also I still can't believe that ending where Kim Raewon's character really couldn't say goodbye before his *d word*

1

@immawish I heard that KRW not winning the Daesang made him sorrow? As in feeling dejected, since a drama that wasn't as good/on par with Punch won.

Yes, I love him in those three dramas that you mentioned. But VIP...man, that was a hard pill to swallow. As much as LSY's character was a douche bag from the beginning , the problem with VIP also lies in the writing of last couple of episodes. Once the affair's secret was out, it was such a letdown from the exciting first half. Let's hope this new drama make LSY's character, one that we can cheer for.

How is Kim Ah-joong's career not as big as expected? I know she had a scandal, but I have heard that she's one of the most beautiful actresses in Korea (from those who have seen her in rl). It's very telling, how someone can have a hit big/hit series/right look, but still not soar. The industry is very fickle. That being said, the PD for this project is "no thanks" for me. Meh, just good to see her back, that's all!

Lol I love how @tineybeanie switched up Defendant and Whisper because it was back to back and I can't even remember which is which lol.

This sounds like a comedy version of that Joo Jihoon and Sooae's drama years ago... What was it...

That was Mask, with Yeon Jung-hoon (currently being passionate in 2 Days 1 Night) as the dodgy brother-in-law.

For me, this sounds like a more prestigious version of the Kim Hyun-joo / Ji Jin-hee weekend drama I Have A Lover.

Yeon Jung-hoo did a lot of romantic roles before pivoting to villain roles. He seems like a soft spoken kind man in rl. Him being on 2d1n was also an interesting choice he made. Altho his whisper voice was a bit annoying in Lie after Lie, not sure he made that choice.

I haven't seen Mask or any of his romantic roles, but I liked him in Vampire Prosecutor and I simply adored him in OCN's Possessed, where he was the very embodiment of evil. Your description of him in Lie after Lie is a bit worrying. I don't think I like him very much in gentle mode, haha.

He was a nice lovely guy in Lie after Lie. But his whisper acting drove me up the wall. At 1st, it didn't bother me. But when he would speak to the FL in a closed off space where it was just them 2, and he's speaking so quietly, I was like ??!. Strange choice on his part lol.

I think him being a dad, he prob. wants nicer roles lol. Since he got type-casted for villain roles in his later career. Meanwhile, his wife Han Ga-in feels semi-retired now...

I am a cops/crime/mystery guy and SBS’s DEFENDANT was one of my favorite dramas of 2017. Ji Sung gave a 5 star performance. DEFENDANT’s ratings were so good that two episodes were added (total 18). Remember when that used to happen? Yes there was talk that episodes were added because the following drama SBS’s WHISPER with Ji Sung’s wife Lee Bo-young needed more preparation time. Who knows.

She turned down this drama :( I heard she's quite beautiful in rl, and she's also talented too. Is she even in the position to keep turning down roles (Oh Hae Young/this one?). I wonder if this will get her blacklisted or something? Sighs. Now Lee Honey is in talks for her role. If this drama hits big, she'll prob. regret turning it down. But alas, I respect her choice for choosing work that she wants to do.
