Premiere Watch: Run On, Sweet Home

More dramas and new genres on the way! This week we have two very different premieres — a light and pretty romance drama with an aesthetic I’d like to hop right into, and a dark and scary horror drama with an aesthetic out of my deepest nightmares. Take your pick, or heck — pick both! There’s no shortage of new dramas this December, that’s for sure.

Run On

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: With some pretty teasers and dreamy vibes to get us excited, it’s finally time for Run On to premiere! I’m hoping for thoughtful depth, strong characters, and a well-written script — all of which are more than enough to make the relationship between a retired runner and translator go from snooze alert, to a deep, insightful, and catch-your-breath sort of romance story. The drama stars Im Shi-wan and Shin Se-kyung as the main couple, and Kang Tae-oh and Sooyoung in the second lead slots. If Run On can capture the sweet emotions and aesthetic of More Than Friends (JTBC’s most recent romance drama), and add a little more for us to chew on, I know I’ll be a happy camper.

Sweet Home

Time slot: Friday
Broadcaster: Netflix
Genre: Horror
Episode count: 10

Reasons to watch: Netflix is back with their latest original offering after the wonderful weirdness of The School Nurse Files. There’s nothing cute or quirky about Sweet Home, though. Instead, it’s a full-on survival story of the horror/gore genre. We follow a group of humans who are desperate to hold onto their humanity as the people around them turn into horrifying monsters. How far are they willing to go to remain human? Where is the line between human and monster? What I’ve seen of this drama makes me think it’s a little too much creepy violence and gore for my taste, but the cast is so good! Lee Jin-wook, Lee Shi-young, Song Kang, and Lee Do-hyun. If those four names aren’t enough to make you do a double-take, I don’t know what is. Oh wait, maybe the fact that this director is responsible for some other dramas you might have heard of — you know, little dramas like Goblin, Descended from the Sun, and Mr. Sunshine?

I’m so so excited for Run On! All the teasers, posters and behind the scene makings I’ve watched has got me so excited for it, I’m really here for the cute romance between the leads and second leads but hoping we get a thoughtful story along the way with characters to root for..

I’m excited to binge watch Sweet Home as well, especially after watching Alice in Borderland, I need another thriller to watch! I purposely avoided the trailers because I want to go in without knowing much about it.. Hopefully it’ll be really good

Ugh, I want to support the adaptation of Sweet Home but there's a huge difference between seeing this story on paper and seeing it in motion. I probably won't be able to handle it. Anyone considering it should know that it has a pretty great source material to work off of, I'm sure it'll be great!

Meanwhile, nothing will keep me away from Run On.

Ahahaha by that do you mean the serious amounts of violence and gore that will necessarily be involved? If so I'm totally the same--I read all the way through the webtoon and really enjoyed it, but I don't know if I could stomach a live action adaptation. Ahahahaha but it is great source material! I hope it does well. ^^

Bring it on and bring it home. Probably a whole new level of monstrous horror for Kdrama.

I am looking forward to seeing Siwan again in RUN ON having seen him only in the wonderful MISAENG (2014). This will be my first Shin Se-kyung drama. Based on the teasers we may see references to classic films. I wonder what writer-nim has up her/his sleeve?
Availability: RUN ON will be available on Netflix (USA). MISAENG is also available on Netflix (USA).
O/T RUN ON is one of two romantic dramas that I will be watching, The other is Ji Chang-wook's LOVESTRUCK IN THE CITY which will also be available on Netflix (USA) with episode one on 22 Dec. 2020.

Non-romance kdramas from netflix tend to be exemplary and a step above the typical kdrama so I'm 1,000% excited for Sweet Home especially after seeing the trailer.

I'm so over romance kdramas, there's almost always barely any interesting plot for 16 episodes and they are just so boring to me now but I will check out Run On for the Im Siwan and the leads do look great together.

I’m really looking forward to Run On, mostly got the cast. Loved Im Siwan in Misaeng, and I’m also looking forward to the 5-seconds-per-episode of Ryu Abell in this, lol.

As much as I think Run On looks great with beautiful leads, I'm on the fence about this one because Shin Se-kyung is the FL. I think I've seen her in 2 shows already (Six Flying Dragons and Habaek) and I have never been able to warm up to her characters. She possesses ethereal beauty, but something about her reminds me of my feeling I had for Park Min-young in her projects before Weather. I do love Im She-wan in Misaeng though. I'll wait and see the Beanies' comments and trend first before making the decision.

I think I'm in for at least a few episodes to see what I think. I liked Habaek mostly because the sets were gorgeous and this one looks like it's going to be a beautiful too.

Based on the Book of Interpretation between @ndlessjoie and mmmmm: If she says yes it is probably a no for me, and vice versa 😅

On a more serious note, I’ll wait and see your opinions about it.

I used to feel like I was watching Shin Se-kyung acting, not the actual character. But that changed with ROOKIE HISTORIAN. She was great there.

A great comment to make me feel interested in Rookie Historian for the very first time. I must admit that knowing she is in there made me so uninterested in the show - especially the ones revolving around her character.

I second this - I think she's getting better and better with each role. I really liked her in Rookie Historian and, two eps into Run On, I feel like she's building there, too.

@wishfultoki @carlybisek
It could also be that she is getting better at choosing projects that match her acting style. (Or finding directors who know how to maximise her positives/ and down play limitations)

I have not seen a project where she is this relaxed since some of her work in TwDR. She doesn't have to over work to hit the moments and the director & DP have a sharp visual eye that let her play it small. Also, some of those scene transitions - such a joy.

I find the curse of bad project selection stalks so many SK Drama leads.

I'm really excited to watch Lee Do-hyun in another show so soon after 18 Again! Even with a bad haircut.

Sweet Home brings me back to the same conundrum I had about Train to Busan (does my love of all things Gong Yoo outweigh my fear and hatred of zombie movies?): does my love of all things Lee Dohyun outweigh my terror and fear of horror shows?

Siwan is always a hit in non-romance genre but the his picks for romance always tend to be bland. Their bts clips I saw on twt are cute though.

Going to have to check out Run On after all those sweet promos.

On the fence regarding Sweet Home. Not really into horror/gore (though I did love Kingdom), but it's got a solid cast and what looks to be a reasonable episode count.

Run On was so cute. I know some might find it slow but I think the vibe was pretty refreshing!

The perspective is very different. Looking forward to episode 3
