Shin Mina, Kim Sun-ho courted for new tvN drama Mr. Hong

Shin Mina, Kim Sun-ho

It looks like Kim Sun-ho’s career has really sky-rocketed after his recent role in Start-up, as he’s been offered the lead for Mr. Hong alongside dramaland star Shin Mina (Chief of Staff). According to the latest reports, both actors are positively reviewing the script for this upcoming drama.

The project is a drama remake of a 2004 rom-com film Mr. Handy, Mr. Hong, which starred Uhm Jung-hwa (You Are Too Much, Witch’s Romance) and the late Kim Joo-hyuk (Argon). For the remake, Kim Sun-ho has been offered the titular part of Mr. Hong, an unemployed man who is good at everything. Shin Mina has been offered the role of the practical, perfectionist dentist that eventually falls in love with him. It’s set in a small seaside village, and it’s supposed to be a warm, humanistic healing romance.

Although tvN has picked up Mr. Hong for its network, the time slot is currently being negotiated. It sounds like a typical rom-com, but with the right casting and script, it could go from ordinary to extraordinary so I’m looking forward to how things turn out.

Speaking of, I do adore KSH. But I keep hearing reports of him getting a nose job or comments about it. And honestly I sorta see it compared to his old videos, again it's not a big deal. But it does make me wonder lol 🤣.

1

hi @soulsearch12,

Read somewhere and also saw an interview clip in IG (but didn't get a link) where KSH was saying something along the lines of (if I remember correctly) he liking his features and that he has never considered undergoing plastic surgery.

I personally think KSH didn't /won't... he seems so comfortable and confident with his looks, I don't think he has any insecurities.

On the topic of KSH and SMHs possible drama... I definitely feel more excited with this than the rumored pairing with Kim Ji Won... sorry :P

2

@kdragon Yeah, given the strict beauty standards over there, best not to say more. I do find it a bit sad that b/c of his new found popularity, people have been commenting on his H.S pics (Some have said he looks diff/gossiping about his looks). He's someone who has a lot of worries :( As for insecurity, I'm sure dude knows he's attractive lol, but he's being humble/self-effacing for saying otherwise. I mean, in all his shows, there's always a woman or two vying for his attention or making heart eyes at him. Like, he knows, the writers knows, actors knows, etc.

SMA is amazing, but womanly if that makes sense? I love her curvy figure. I think her and KSH would look amazing together, but also she creates chemistry with anybody. No worries, I'm in the same boat with KJW/KSH's pairing. I'm not feeling it, I think he could work well with Seo Ye Ji, Son Ye Jin, Song Hye Kyo, and Seo Hyun Jin better. Yes, they're older, but I feel like he needs a stable/established female veteran to work alongside with. In his prior dramas, the pairing of his romantic leads didn't inspire much traction for whatever reason.

It's b/c KSH's looks/visuals (soft/yet manly) while excluding an innocent vibe makes it hard for him to be cast alongside a female actress that works with him. I think Suzy visually matched up the best with him. She has this elegance to her, yes, but also this softness and natural beauty that bounced off of him very well.

By some weird dramaland coincidence, Shin Mina was also scheduled to work with Kim Sun Ho‘s Start-Up co-star Nam Joo Hyuk in another drama (https://mydramalist.com/48949-here), though a cruel twist of fate with Bae Sung Woo on DUI hiatus indicates that progress on that show will most likely be delayed. Even if she doesn’t work with both of them, she has yet another one in the works (https://mydramalist.com/30206-i-am-a-nurse-a-human)! 3 dramas in one year seems quite insane for an actress of her calibre and standing, so I predict that both male actors won’t get to act with her. I do know who I wish gets to though. (Clue: it’s the one I think has better acting skills)

Anyway, back to the show and off the meta: it just sounds boring. But then again I’ve been surprised before (am currently feeling so when watching Run On) so I’ll certainly wait for more details to drop before considering whether to pick it up. Being a remake of an old show, I hope the writer at least gets rid of all the dated drama trends.

My choice was the same movie plot about the hardware, carpentry and of course, a lot of construction working out there. If my choice is correct, then I'm ready to build the (new!) drama houseland.

https://www.dramabeans.com/2019/10/noh-hee-kyungs-new-humanitarian-drama-announces-stellar-lineup/

@radily It's called Here which unfortunately, Noh Hee-kyung's planned drama didn't starting a production shoot yet and became one of the productions not yet starting (I think) due to Covid-19. When Bae Sung-woo listed already, I think he will replace that had similar looks to him.

Here was announced in 2019, but has been delayed b/c of the pandemic. (International shoots withstanding). As for the nurse drama, it does seem like not much has been added other than her being attached to it. I think that Kim Seon Ho is awaiting Shin Min Ah's confirmation, before signing on.

As for Here, LBH is the ML there. But as we know, has another movie shooting in March (Concrete Utopia) next yr. So let's say Concrete Utopia is filming March-July/August, then b/c LBH is such a big star/power that Here will get delayed again. I think to 2022.

So in a way, she only has this and the Nurse drama, but I think Mr. Hong (tvN/Studio Dragon) are the better mix, plus the scriptwriter did Argon (which was very well made/written). The Crowned Clown PD is also involved, so again, Mr. Hong seems like the better choice cast/crew wise.

Can we get an Early X-mas miracle and have him do Mr. Hong first and then Link at the end of 2021? Mr. Kim is a very lucky man, he's working with two of the finest and beautiful actresses working today. I hope SMA confirms b/c I think that's what he's waiting on?

These casting stuff are always up in the air, in H-wood terms, in talks means the actors were approached with offers/roles, and they're now considering the project. Usually it's with 90% certainty, unless something personal happens or a schedule conflict occurs. if KSH did 2 dramas last yr, I hope he can do 2 dramas again for 2021!!

"Hong Doo-Shik, there is something special about him!! He's a good-looking 31 year-old man who knows everything and knows how to do everything. He's a delivery man for a Chinese restaurant. He's a clerk at a convenience store. And he's even a singer at a live cafe! Yoon Hye-Jin is a righteous perfectionist and also a dentist. She gets fired when her 'supposed-to-be-threatening' resignation is accepted by the board! She moves to a small rural town to open up her own clinic."

"But, something about each other draws them closer. First of all, Mr. Handy is a good fighter. He can fight like one of those Matrix characters.. Second, he has a warm heart. It seems like he lives in a world that is different from hers... And she can't help but keep thinking about him... Hye-jin is so damn loud! But sometimes... in a strange way, she sounds like a bird chirping... sounds like rhythmic beats... He can't help but keep thinking about her..."

Interesting. So, he's going to do action, sing, construction work, deliver food, and etc. So it seems like a quirky role, I read somewhere from someone who saw the film that said Mr. Hong is a very cool guy. I think the combination of cool Mr. Hong and full of personality Hye-jin could be very fun to see. That is only if SMA and KSH are the stars. Anyone else, I'll be bored by.

I think about Gong Hyo Jin's quote:

“I choose good scripts and characters with high self-respect. I avoided helpless characters who cling onto love without their own jobs. Rather, I chose characters who are good at their jobs while laughing and crying over love. Whether it’s a woman or a man, the character should love their job and be good at it while being in love in order to not be hated.”

So in a way, we see here is the ML is the one who's jobless. Which is an interesting power reversal that K-drama rom-coms typically don't show much of. If it helps a bit, the writer wrote Argon which was really well written, and the PD did The Crowned Crown which was well received. Studio Dragon is also attached, which is really important b/c their shows for better or worse all attracted buzz/star talent.

GHJ is one of a kind. Not many actresses like her that eschew looking pretty. I remember one film she looked crazy, and had a scene where her hairy armpits showed lol. (I assume those were fake aha).

It's on Dailymotion, under Mr. Hong (2004), very bad quality though. I watched Pt 1, will go back to finish it lol! If I'm being honest, it's only him working w/ SMA that's piquing my interest. I hope he can do Link as well. Him as a sexy chef is just catnip!

A very young GHJ (22) has a support role as a teenaged former girlfriend of a Ex-con trying to reenter society in Ruler of Your Own World (2002). Old drama, good story. Yang Dong-Geun pickpockets Lee Na-Young‘s wallet which has dramatic repercussions.

That's a drama that at the time wasn't appreciated in Korea. But if you look now, many people praised the naturalistic vibe and acting of the show/actors. It was about normal people, none of the tropes that K-dramas had at the time. Kang Ha Neul said it's one of his favorite dramas, and he's 10 yrs younger than Gong Hyo Jin!! Which proves how timeless this drama is, and how ahead of it was.

Christmas came early!!!! Thank you Drama Gods for even bringing up this pairing!! Genius/galaxy brained level of casting!!!

Seriously, I was hoping for him to work with The SMA!! But thought it was a pipe dream. So so elated tbh.

SMA isn't only a goddess, but she's utterly charming, sweet, and lovable. She's a really talented actress.

As for KSH, say no more lol!! Dude has proven his chops time and time again. He took the role in Start Up, & ran off with it in the end!! Their chemistry together is going to be electric and fire!!! She's very playful/flirty so that'll be a good way to off kilter his humorous side :)

Hoping Mr. Hong gets fast tracked so we can see this pairing!! And then possibly Link up next :)) One thing, I do love that SMA's character is a dentist (Someone self employed) and is financially and independently stable. Gong Hyo Jin said the reasons why her rom-coms work is b/c her character has a job she loves, so while she has that stability, she also laughs/cries about love too!!

Shin Min Ah fits this role of the FL, even in real life. She is such a wonderful and kind lady! Beautiful inside and out : https://www.soompi.com/article/1444110wpp/shin-min-ah-revealed-to-have-helped-114-burn-patients-through-her-annual-donations-of-100-million-won

"Last year, it was revealed that Shin Min Ah has been making yearly donations of 100 million won (approximately $91,400) since 2015 to the Hallym Burn Foundation. It’s said that she decided to make donations to help patients with burn injuries when she found out that they receive less attention from society than other groups of people in need."

"Recently, it was shared that Shin Min Ah has now helped a total of 114 patients to be able to continue to receive treatment and surgeries. She has also personally visited hospitals to support and comfort the patients and their families."

"In addition, Shin Min Ah has paid medical expenses for children overseas in countries such as Mongolia and Cambodia to receive required treatment in Korea."

Hallym Burn Foundation’s chairperson Yoon Hyun Sook stated, “Patients with burn injuries in our country have received a great amount of courage and hope through Shin Min Ah, who has actively supported patients with burn injuries for a long time.”

I don't think anyone cares lol, but I saw the film and it was cute (but not overtly so) and the FL and ML were well written. One thing, his fighting skills were never utilized or seen in the film. I saw more singing scenes lol. The dentist friend of the FL was a riot! Funny and reminded me of JJS's character in Architecture 101.

As for plot, honestly I felt like it was thin. I think that if this were to serve as a K-drama, it might be perfect for the format? As in more backstory on the FL's background, more delving into the orphan past (Yes again another Orphan role), maybe introduce the Grandfather who raised him as a supporting role (?), more on the two leads relationship, and probably more emphasis on the village people too.

It might work if the show instead of being a straight up slice of life show, becomes an interesting pick of the genre show? As in, Mr. Hong does loads of things right, so they could like they did in their teaser trailer, go into the wacky by delving more into Mr. Hong's alternate lives//hobbies. What if he gets into crime (They might shoe horn that in so people are interested), as a result of his action/fighting skills?

There's an American show called Barry, which is brilliant btw. About a hitman turned actor, on paper it's a huh??, but it works out well. Mr. Hong could be brilliant if they utilize his many talents. "It seems like he lives in a world that is different from hers" from the film's synopsis could be interesting/not boring, if they played with format/genre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bi8RJIS7L5A If this is just a straight up slice of life/heartfelt show, it'll be boring (Since Noh Hee Kyung/Reply writers aren't writing it).

As for the Female role in the film, she was feisty and confident. If she saw something unjust, she would call them out. Even if it means getting arrested. She slept with Mr. Hong 3 times lol, and she was mature about the responses she would get. I love that the FL in this drama is a confident and fashionable woman, who gives back too. I think it's good to see a confident FL, and I also like that Mr. Hong is a cool guy. He doesn't lay out all his emotions, but he listens to the FL, bicker with her, but ultimately opens up his heart to her, as does she.

Mr. Hong was a cool/gruff guy. If KSH is playing Mr. Hong, I think he would do great. It's def. not a Yong-shik role (WTCB). His character is like the macho guy (surface level) whose has a past that makes him that way, it's only the FL who understands him, and eventually thaws his heart. I'm sure in a K-drama, it'll take like 10 or 12 episodes getting there.

The only thing is other than more on the FL/ML backstories/delving into their professions, what else can they add on to make it robust? I guess more of the villagers (They just popped in to shame the FL), and I guess her dentist friend? That's why delving more into Mr. Hong's skills (clerk man, delivery man, live bar singer, fighter, handy man)...

Required fields are marked *

Yelps, just wrote a lot and it didn't even show up lol. Sighs.

Basically, if they delved more into his other professions, it could be fun seeing him get into wacky/awful situations as a result of his multiple professions.

Another show it could take is Hart of Dixie (City gal who has to work in a small town), and eventually loves it and falls in love with the handy man there. Not a thrilling show, but wholesome and lovely. The FL there eventually opened up her own clinic and became respected. I hope Mr. Hong (FL being confident/fashionable/generous) gives me Beauty Inside (Seo Hyun Jin vibes).

Really, SMA and KSH's names attached to this are what's making me excited. She's a bigger name, and with her abilities and experiences, she'll lead KSH well. I think working with someone like her will make KSH shine even more, and grow more as an actor.

Overall, the film was cute and the FL/ML there were nice together. But it was a bit thin on plot, and I think if adapted to a show, the chemistry is def. what's going to make this show. So I hope SMA and KSH confirm, and we can see what Mr. Hong has to offer. Bonus points is if both of the character's relationship is healthy/mature one (Mature as in Equal Balance of Power). Sorta like Her Private Life's main couple.
