Yoo Inna joins cast of JTBC’s Snowdrop

Casting has been announced for Yoo Inna (The Spies Who Loved Me) in JTBC’s upcoming drama Snowdrop. She joins Jung Hae-in (A Piece of Your Mind), Kim Hye-yoon (Extraordinary You), Jang Seung-jo (The Good Detective), Yoon Se-ah (Forest of Secrets 2), as well as Blackpink’s Jisoo (Arthdal Chronicles) in the cast lineup.

The drama is set against the backdrop of Seoul in 1987, a year rife with violent riots and demonstrations in rebellion against the military dictatorship that was in power at the time. And Snowdrop’s story sets off when college student Jung Hae-in suddenly runs into a women’s dormitory building, injured and covered in blood. Despite the dangers involved, fellow college student Jisoo helps him hide and attends to his wounds. And, naturally, the two fall in love.

The role that Yoo Inna takes on is Dr. Kang Chung-ah, an internist who works at the national hospital. She is well-respected for her skills as a surgeon and is described as having a guarded personality.

It feels a little strange to see someone as established as Yoo Inna take on a supporting role, but it might mean that there was something about the character or the drama that she just couldn’t pass up.

Written and directed by the creators of SKY Castle, PD Jo Hyun-taek (Mirror of the Witch) and writer Yoo Hyun-mi (Gaksital), JTBC’s Snowdrop is currently being planned to air next year in 2021.

I'm hoping it does have something to do with the character - I really like Yoo In-na and think she's a versatile actress who is great at playing strong and complex characters. I was on the fence about what I'd read before about Snowdrop , but I'll watch now.

I'm also wondering as well, based solely upon my own amateur observations as I have no real knowledge of Korean network politics, if doing a show on JTBC is part of the appeal? As of late, it does seem like JTBC and tvN are the rising stars, or at least their publicity machines are spinning a lot bigger and faster than MBC seemed to have done with Spies (which, I'll say for the 1,000th time, was a damn shame - that show and that cast deserved way more attention than they got).

tvN and JTBC have emerged in the last few years/last half decade as top dogs. And deservedly so. They take more risks, give a bit more freedom to their writers, and select top talents in both film and tv. I mean, its like what's happened in H-wood, with Cable channels/Netflix/Hulu releasing critically acclaimed works that garner awards buzz. Of course some shows on Public TV are great, ex. Stove League, Hyena, Into the Ring, & Through the Grapevine but those are every few and near. Cable dramas of course aren't all great either, but tvN dramas for one, are elite tv. Plus they offer more $$ to their talents too. MBC, KBS, and SBS are tax payed stations so there's only a certain amount that can be allocated. Imo, tvN/JTBC are important b/c if those channels didn't exist, Korean's TV landscape wouldn't be at the level it is today if those channels didn't jumpstart the push/move to more top quality shows.

I'm sure doing a show on JTBC is appealing, but in this case, I'd say it's probably more doing a show with the Sky Castle team. If this has even half as much success and buzz, it will be big for her career.

TBH, she should be playing a lead role across from JHI. Jisoo seems really inexperienced in proportion to the talent on this cast (JHI, YIN, JSJ...). But whatevs, she's great and I'll watch her in what I can. (Still haven't finished Spies -- I dropped it after a few episodes for reasons extraneous to the show, although I plan on picking it up again eventually. I thought she was good in the episodes I watched.)

I hope you continue to enjoy it when you do! I really enjoyed her performance, but also thought that the overall cast was strong which just made the whole thing great.

I wonder what role Jang Seung Jo is going to have in this. After witnessing him as a lead in "The Good Detective" it feels too soon for him to go back to a supporting role. I'd love to see him be the lead in more things. Since Yoo Hyun Mi also penned Gaksital (old it may be) I have hopes for this to turn out well. Hopefully each supporting cast-mate mentioned above will be a well-developed, active part of the story.

Imo, this is more of an ensemble show a la Sky Castle, which gave ample room for all their actors to shine. Supporting actors/2nd Lead roles aren't what they used to be. In fact, we've cases where the 2nd Leads outshined or stole the spotlight from the Main leads. Sometimes, a Main Lead can feel nondescript or like a 2nd Lead sometimes in their role/arc. Jang Seung Jo being a part of this is good news imo. It's a drama that's getting lots of buzz already, and bodes top writers/team behind it. Plus, I'm all here for more ensemble like shows where we can see big name actors and rising names mixed in together. Like Stranger does well, giving ample room for small/big actors chances to shine.

I think Jang Seung-jo is probably just taking whatever good opportunities come his way. It makes sense. He's in his late thirties and probably wants to take whatever momentum he's built up in his last few years and use it to cement his reputation as a good actor so that good roles will continue to come his way as he gets older. Ideally, he'd be getting more lead roles, but as long as he's choosing good projects, I'm happy. I'm sure he'll continue to shine.

It's an unkind opinion so I acknowledge as much to her fans, but Yoo Inna has always struck me as a lightweight, so possibly this was taken to dispel such a perceptions since this appears to be a drama with a capital "D".

Similarly, I have no idea who Jisoo is exactly, beyond the fact she is in a popular girl group (yeah, yeah, I am aware calling Blackpink a popular group is like saying Jeff Bezos is "rich.") but the wife tells me she was in Arthdal Chronicles. Is there any indication she can hold her own with the likes of Jung Hae-in?

Honestly, we shall see. I feel like I seen dramas where the FL or ML's roles disappear half way through. I think in this case, b/c its a top ensemble piece, that her storyline could be like the 1st part of the show, and the 2nd half, Kim Hye Yoon plays a bigger part? As for JHI, he's always coasted off his bigger name FL's imo. He's been very lucky to have worked with Son Ye Jin and Han Ji Min in his career thus far. Although I've noticed his FL's status/name have gone to more younger actresses since...Usually, it's the other way around where the actor gets paired with younger actresses at first in their career, but as they get more known, more same age or older actresses.

JIH is 30 + rather 32+ if i rememb er correctly..

the senior FL casts are more of his age..he is fine

He is lucky to have grabbed eyeballs early on and worked across genre and FLs with different strength (young or old, almost all are super famous.. if not then are def. good actresses say chae soo bin)

We got to talk more about how female actresses (esp. big names) are used to prop up an upcoming actor to new heights. JHI is talented, but sometimes I feel like he's been type-casted as the soft romantic guy. Like there's dozens of actors in Korea rn who fulfill that market, so what does he have that makes him stand out from the crowd? This generation new stars have it harder now, due to increased competition, less attention span, and less dramas to showcase their abilities. Eh lol.

Increasing competition is true for each generation. Every generation has it more tough than previous in terms of intensity of the competition, but then previous generations also had less aides and platform for everyone to make use of lest they wanted to do well...

The famous baseball statistics logic.
You can call today's stats amazing, but the truth is it is not that new age players are great but their circumstances in terms of opportunities they have is also different.

****************
Market - he he.. entertainment market is all about pretty oppas in romantic drama (on a serious note, the biggest money makers are romantic dramas across world.. ignoring the recent comic franchises.. and your biggest stars are the ones who have managed to woo women fans.. this is true for idols/singers/pop stars etc)

@alasecond Sigh that's the truth :// It does make me feel a bit bad for them. Of course they play into the romantic thing, but at some point, it wrecks with you no?

Personal life/dating wise. Interesting, in the West, rom-coms have been dying since the 2010s. Even in Korea, it's not as popular as it used to be. Now crime/thriller shows are more popular in Korea. I'm talking overall age/gender wise. Minus few expectations that come every few yrs, Hallyu hits are overrated like it's just not the same as it used to be. Esp. with China jumping ship due to THADD/and making their own products.

At some point, these actors can't be in their 40s/50s constantly playing young-is roles anyone where they are only there to romance the FL. People get sick/tired of that FAST.

As for increasing competition, it happens. But I feel like now, there's more pressure for the actors. It used to be you can just act, and that's it. But now, you've to model, host, sing, variety show, on top of their chosen profession. I mean, they're an actor not an entertainer!! If I was an actor in Korea rn, I wouldn't set foot. It's just too small of a entry there, to stand out.

I agree that more genres are coming up ..

but my take on that is as audience matures, they will seek variety (mature in their viewing habit not age.. so a 20 yr old could also seek out high quality content)

However, stardom primarily has been riveted around ability to make people spend and go gaga over them..
Movies and dramas are still dominated by females (say unlike wrestling or sports where men probably dominate the market trends) . .. and hence romantic viability of the actor :P (hence BLs are making money and lesbian themed content hardly has takers)

But you are right.. as one grows they need to venture out... also as an actor, i am sure they seek good work once basic fame and money is sorted.. they would also like variety and ability to challenge themselves

She was in that drama for like a 5-second cameo so we'll have to see.

There is no better time for Jisoo to start but now. She can't be doing 5 second cameos all her life, right? The drama creators of this production don't just blindly pick any random person. Comparing to other actresses who auditioned for this role, Jisoo had the upper hand because she has hug fanbase. If I am the creator of this production I would have made the same decision as oppose to selecting another actress with similar qualification. You may argue that she needs to start with the supporting role first before doing the main lead which I would agree for 99% of the time but this is not for Jisoo, why? Because she auditioned for the lead role and got the role.

YGE typically have multiple of their actors be included in the same production ( ex. Go back spouse - both Son Ho-jun and Jang Ki-yong are from YGE, Weightlifting Fairy – Lee Sung-kyung, Nam Joo-hyuk, and Kyung Soo-jin are all from YGE). Now with snowdrop – they have Jisoo and Yoo In Na included on the main lead.

What is UP with this drama casting? Seriously what is it? The drama was already on my radar purely because of kim hye yoon, but then they announce yoo inna and...they really want me to watch it, don't they?
I am hoping that all the characters are going to play significant roles in the drama because otherwise it's an absolute waste of this amazing cast.

I mean if we know one thing about SKY Castle writer is that she can put supporting character on the spotlight as well as the main (SKY Castle children are THRIVING right now in affect to that) so I'm so excited!

One thing tho, I believe the actors way to play with their characters plays a big part of SKY Castle's success. Idk what to expect if the moms weren't even a drop less good that Yeom Jungah, Yoon Seah, Oh Nara, Lee Taeran, and Kim Seohyung. I have nothing against Idol actor but is always skeptical about them, and it's Jisoo's first role. I'm not saying that she's not gonna make it, but more to I'm gonna be excited for her and hope that she pulls it off.

Although, given we also have Kim Hyeyoon.... I think she's more of the love interest of main lead, instead of the female lead.. By this I mean the story probably will be centered on Jung Haein and Kim Hyeyoon's character but with no romance involved ig

Actually KHY has a one sided love for the male lead who falls in love at first sight for the female lead character. They met in a group date according to the character description released by the production. Apparently there was a tough audition for the female lead role and many famous celebs including KHY auditioned but ultimately only JS managed to win. This was released in an official video by journalists who cover celebrity news. The focus is apparently on the love story between JHI and JS but YIN getting this role is only because of YG. They're using her to give JS more clout because BP is their biggest bread winner. If you look at the actor name line up which is a huge deal in SK apparently KHY name appears very low in the list and based on her recent interviews it doesn't seem like her role will get a lot of screen time but it will be a plot device.

This show's casting has everyone wondering. I love the girls of Blackpink but I feel bad for Jisoo cause it's going to be difficult for her to March the supporting cast and the male lead. I dont know what YGE was thinking when they decided to launch Jisoo's acting career with such a role and that too opposite Jung Hae In. Looking forward to this drama regardless

I have zero idea on this drama but a support role for Yoo Inna and a lead for Jisoo...? I only know she's an idol... and AC wasn't exactly successful... and Hyeyoon is such a strong actress.

This is from the makers of SKY Castle so I'm interested.. but this casting is kind of I don't know. Guess I'll be on the look-out for more news on this.
