Drama viewership ratings for the week of Jan. 25-31, 2021

The ratings chart is slowly emptying out, as this season’s dramas come to a close. Cheat on Me ended this week, and soon to follow are Run On, True Beauty, and Hush. I’m sad to see some of these go (*cries over Joo-kyung and Soo-ho*), but I’m excited for all the dramas to come. And looking at February’s drama schedule, we’re about to get hit with a lot of new content.

Going back to our ongoing shows, there’s some positive movement. At the beginning of the week, both Secret Royal Inspector and Sunbae gained more viewers. Then, over the weekend, Mr. Queen hit an all-time high of 14.9 percent. The wacky sageuk still has a few more episodes, and I have no idea where the ratings (or the, uh, story) are willing to go.

Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce) on TV Chosun: its 3rd episode on Saturday reached 8.899%, i.e. even higher rating than its first two episodes last week. I am getting interested. However, in my region Netflix shows new Korean dramas (all episodes at once) only after the last episode airs in Korea so I have to wait till mid March before I watch it.

I just caught up with it. After the first 2 episodes, it's a really easy watch without indulging into rage-inducing simple-mindedness and drama. It's got a nice rhythm and dynamic. I can see how it's getting ratings. Reminds me of those primetime US crime comedy/drama like Bones or Rizzoli and Isles that I enjoyed 10 years ago, but without the science. Even though the cases span multiple episodes, it looks easy enough to pick up mid-case. Kudos to the production for filling this niche.
