Yes. Yes. And yes. It wasn't over the top, but simple and sweet. And the fact that it was understated did not detract from its aww factor.

Agree. It wasn't a basic confession. It was also a way for him to ask her, if she felt the same way. He did not shove his feeling on her. How is this guy flipping our hearts every freaking episode! And how adorable is smiling ISW!

Hi Beanies!!

Life has been hectic and online classes are more strenuous than physical ones. I am now checking in Open Thread after a long time.

Recently, I’ve been spending my days just catching up with my ongoing drama backlogs. Among those, I look forward to True Beauty and Uncanny Counter the most, but Hush is slowly growing on me. I also finally managed to set aside time to make my bean count for 2020 and I was surprised to have my all-time high of 34 beans!

Anyway, I’m here to ask for drama suggestions where I can find quotable monologues (or dialogues) that I can use for my yearbook 😂 I want to find a nice quote about taking risks despite being scared and putting up a fight. I know there are a few good ones I came across with before, but now I just can’t think of anything that fits the category.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to your recommendations!

There are monologues out the wazoo in this show.

Some of my favorites:
Se-hee using cat psychology to comfort Ji-ho at the end of episode 1
Ho-rang's red coat conversation with Ji-ho in episode 9
Any of the quotes from the wedding episodes (5 and 6)

Open any random episode at any random spot and you've got something, I swear

My Ajusshi! <3
The whole drama itself is about fighting for your life, for never giving up no matter how scared (or feeling hopeless) you were, that life is precious, worth fighting for, and that your happiness does matter a lot,,gah I can go on and on and on when I talk about this beloved drama of mine, sorry for 'spamming' :D
anyway, for specific quotes from this drama, you may just g*ogle it by using keywords 'my ajusshi quotes' and I'm sure you'll find some inspirations from the search results :)
Good luck for your yearbook!

Misaeng introduced me to the concept of monologues. And they are still so good right from the first episode to the last. My Ajusshi too has some very insightful conversations, so does Dear My friends and Just between Lovers.

My Ahjussi has one right near the end I'll never forget, the crucial line is this: "If you think about it... every relationship is amazing, and precious". The camera lingered over everyone, all the friendships and acquaintances the heroine had made, it was just beautiful.

As a follow-up to last week's discussion about celebrity couples and fan behavior and expectations affecting relationships, this past week was even more crazy.

On January 1st, it was confirmed that HB and SYJ were dating. It caused CLOY shippers to go into a frenzy. SYj herself said she was "overwhelmed" by fan support of her (more than 120,000 comments on her IG post). This also set off fans going through all their old interviews and joint promotions to fed their high expectations with new fan rumors of marriage and pregnancy (even though it appears that they are still in the early stages of their relationship because of pandemic restrictions and busy shooting schedules such as HB out of the country for 3 months last summer). But that did not stop fans are looking deeper into their stars' personal lives trying to confirm their hopes for the couple.

On January 11th, it was SYJ's birthday. Again, she said she was "overwhelmed" by the number of gifts sent to her by her fans. It filled rooms with flower baskets and custom cakes. On her birthday, she went on a long "liking spree" to acknowledge her fan gift posts. Her agency posted two "thank you" videos because fans also purchased electronic billboards in subway stations and marquee buildings in Seoul and abroad. A conservative estimate of all these gifts and tributes is more than $100,000 US.

Which gets us back to our prior discussion. Being "overwhelmed" by fan attention and support is not necessarily good. Though normally associated with work, financial or tragedies, psychologists view that feeling as a form of high stress and anxiety, especially in sensitive and introverted people. In turn, it puts pressure on the individual to reciprocate so it can affect interpersonal relationships. If love is an "emotional commodity," how can one man compete with so much tangible fan affection and support?

Part of the problem of added pressure on a celebrity couple in 2021 is that the pandemic continues to shut down most projects. Their fans are "invested" in their star and their personal relationship. Without a new project to divert attention, fans are more obsessed in their star's dating life because to them it is their "next project." I wonder how destructive this dynamic may become.

I wish them the best. They both seem like level headed adults but it must be an awful lot of pressure.

6
3

Required fields are marked *

Handling the pressure is the key. Fans being greedy about public relationships reminds me of the fable about killing the golden goose.

Also, all these elements (social, cultural and psychological) would make an excellent k-drama.

2
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

They have used these elements in quite a few shows. It is weird how it feels completely over the top and exagerated in the shows, then you hear such insane tales about real life fans ten times worse than the shows!

4
reply

Required fields are marked *

Right? While I’m not especially invested in these people’s private lives, I’m troubled by the idea that fans are not letting them just live, so to speak.

Ironically, if this relationship tanks from external pressure, the hardcore shippers will only have themselves to blame.

I was thinking what should i learn next - Drive a Car, Buy a mobile phone.
I don't want to - Public transport isn't half bad, good money saving as well as less carbon emissions.
Helps me earn few brownie points, helps feeling good about yourself and you can brag to yourself about yourself.
As said in 2020 summer - public transport crowded also makes me far more concerned about few things which might be taken as offense by others before 2020, but became new normal in 2020 - thanks little boy.
Your own vehicle - your own time, speed, location, direction, proper hygienic seats, inner air. No need to think about anyone or anything, easy to keep and handle things. Temptation is great.

Mobile - never bought one. had no need of. email still the best. used family members phone if ever there was urgent need. Keep life simple. no apps, no annoyances. laptop with good internet connection has all the tools of communication.

But it feels like i need both now if i have to make a progress. More of social progress and social alliances.

As for some action - I prefer civil war over wars anyday. Civil war is where all the fun lies in. And cw is far more productive. That's what marketing is. The one talking about the morals and ethics of business world can answer it too -

Required fields are marked *

That won't be necessary, because I'm certain no one replies to your comments for the purpose of acquiring "accolades".

5

@knewbie Yeah even without me doing anything at all some find it opportune.
Earning accolades can't be this easy anywhere afterall.

0

Au contraire @catocat. If by "accolades" you mean likes etc, it's far easier to get them on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr than here on dramabeans.com.

1

@knewbie yup. I have my own crazy fandom for no reason.

0

@catocat Only if <10 people can be regarded as a "fandom". And only if anyone who replies to one's comments can count as one's "fan".

SARANGHAE CAT-O-CAT!!!!!

1

@knewbie heh. y take words so seriously?
If it weren't about a pathetic troll, i would have ignored it. agree/disagree accept/reject/ignore/deplore it but stay on topic.

Your comment, last week on ethics and morals of marketing was on topic and i gladly accepted it and thought whether i was too generalising the whole scenario and forcefully linking 2 concepts or not.

0

@catocat But it wasn't trolling. You said you preferred "civil war" to “wars”. Preferring X to Y presupposes that X and Y are two separate things. But as @egads said, civil war is (a type of) war. So your original statement is problematic in two possible ways:

(1) You could have been unaware that civil wars are a subset of wars.

OR

(2) You should not have assumed that the second occurrence of “war” in your sentence would be interpreted in its narrower sense (i.e. armed conflict between nations), since its first occurrence ("civil war") obviously conveys the more general meaning (i.e. general armed conflict). Similarly, the sentence “The organisation regulates air traffic, not traffic” sounds like a contradiction because readers tend to interpret both instances of “traffic” in the same way.

2

Hello everyone how's 2021? Hope every last ONE of you MADE it.
So this is my first comment or post this YEAR and am so glad to be here. I was surpprised by Peͤnᷡtͭhͪoⷪuͧsᷤeͤ because ussually i don't watch that type of drama, i picked it up because i missed ONE of my favourite actresses, kím hчun sσσ and it was worth it. Can't wait for season 2.

What a lovely day to be on the Open Thread! It’s COOOOOLLLLLDDDD here. Had some snow on the ground this AM and woke up to howling wind. On the docket this week, a very eventful one. COVID19 is still here, and people are crazier than ever. I hope you and your families stay well during this time. I’m still (knocking on wood) healthy and so is my immediate family. Getting my second COVID19 dose next week and looking forward to being 94-95% protected from this virus! I did get in trouble this week for not following COVID19 protocols though, but believe I was acting responsibly and in the best interest of my patient and her health while protecting the health of others as well. Will have a meeting with admin today about it. I won’t get fired or anything, and doubt it will do anything to me professionally (acting in the best interest of patients never gets you in that much trouble, typically). Wish me luck! Just goes to show you how crazy things are right now.
Otherwise, kdramas are still a welcome retreat from the madness. RUN ON still has my heart. For a show about translating things well, I’m having a hard time making out the translations/subtitles on NETFLIX. As my husband said, “Maybe they should ask Mi-joo to translate it.” The whole conversation in episode 9 outside their hotel rooms totally was unintelligible. Someone tell me I wasn’t the only one lost. And it was basically a break up scene, so I would have liked to understand it more. But for a show about misunderstandings, I guess it would be part and parcel that the viewer would be challenged here as well. But I did love Im Siwan in episode 10 though. His reaction after she accepted his confession—best ever. Just the most adorable.
Still watching A LOVE SO BEAUTIFUL, K-version. It’s just okay, not remotely as cute or believable as the Cdrama. Sorry. But I do like the second male lead here more. I’m finding the other couple (especially the male) annoying. Everyone else is not as good either. But, I like the story line and will continue for now.
And @kiara mentioned THE REBEL PRINCESS on the fan wall, Cdrama, historical?, with Zhang Zhi -Yi, and because my first date with my husband involved Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, also with her, I owed it to myself to at least start this. There’s 8 episodes so far and I’ve watched half of the first. She doesn’t look 15 years old, for the record. Hopefully, we’ll keeping jumping forward for her to look more age-appropriate. But if Kiara likes it I probably will too! (And how cool is it that you can have “Disney” as your place of receiving the COVID19 vaccine?)

Conversation—which one do you want to here? Daughter and Math genius or This is what marriage looks like? Okay, both it is:

At Sunday dinner,

Me: Aren’t you the smartest in your class, daughter?
Daughter: No, Math genius is, he makes better grades.
Me: No, I disagree (After all, she is MY daughter).
Daughter: No, really, he is.
Grandmother:...

Me: That’s not really true.
Grandmother: It’s not? I’m really sure it was like that.
Grandmother: *to her daughter* Your mom was so competitive.
Me: Okay, whatever. *effectively dropping that conversation.
Grandmother: *winks at grand-daughter*

While watching Run On with the hubby, both dogs are next to him on the couch and I’m on the other side, scooting myself next to them.

Hubby: Don’t crush my dog.
Me: It’s so warm on this side of the couch, I just want to cuddle with my three “guys.” (Both dogs are male.)
Hubby: I didn’t know you were into that.
Me: There’s some things you still don’t know. Gong Yoo can be on my side, you can pick the other “guy.
Hubby: Probably should make him black. You know, equal opportunity and all.
Me: Oh, yes, the Bridgerton duke, I’ll take him too!

Moral of the story: Grandmothers protect their grandchildren.
2nd Moral: Cuddling with my guys while watching kdramas is the best.
3rd Moral: It’s the weekend Beanies! Enjoy yourselves!

Happy Friday, Beanies! Hope you all are doing well!
My vacation is over and I started to work again this week. However, in January I have to work only 40 percent of my normal working hours so it still feels a little bit like vacation time for me.
Last year I started The Untamed, but dropped it after a few episodes because it felt so slow. On Sunday I discovered it on Netflix and decided to pick it up against and after a few episodes I was so hooked that I binged the whole drama on my free days this week. Yesterday I watched the last episode and I'm seriously tempted to just rewatch it again starting today.
I had the same feeling after my first Korean drama (Faith) and I rewatched it before watching something else, because I couldn't imagine I could fall in love with another drama. So, maybe I should just watch The Untamed again?

Required fields are marked *

Awww thank you, @ally-le, for remembering me and for the tag <3

@swunnie I recommend that you definitely do a re-watching!! For a couple of reasons:

1. I'm a superfan of "The Untamed", Xiao Zhan (everyone on Dramabeans knows that I've already claimed him as my sweet bunny 🐰... He's referred to by fans not because there were bunnies in "The Untamed", but because of his own 2 front bunny teeth), and---to a lesser degree-- Wang Yi Bo as well, so I will forever and always encourage a re-watch (or MANY re-watches) lol

2. There may have been some things/details (details.... "The Untamed" is actually FILLED with small little details) that were missed or not understood during your first watch (I certainly know that was the case for me), and by going back to do a re-watch, you will be able to understand more of the details, how things are linked together--in terms of the plot, characters, timeline, etc.--which will then cultivate a better understanding and love of the overall world and nuances of "The Untamed", and the characters, that the author (Mo Xiang Tong Xiu a.k.a. MXTX) has so beautifully created.

If ever you need a person to turn to for things of "The Untamed", please don't ever hesitate to reach out and tag me ~!!!

I must confess I started a rewatch yesterday 😉 And I agree, there are a lot scenes I understand better know. This is my first Chinese drama, so I'm not even familiar with certain phrases in Mandarin. It's a whole new world for me and a very exciting one!
Today I've started to read the novel and it also helps a lot to understand the world and what is going on.
Thanks for your offer to help! I will keep it in mind and come back to you if needed!!

Oh, yay!! Yea, a re-watch for "The Untamed" definitely helps a lot :) I've only read bits and pieces of the novel, but not in it's entirety from front to back, but it definitely helps to fill in the gaps left by the drama (because of censorship, since "The Untamed" is based off of a BL novel)

Ooh, you've picked a good one--but also a difficult one-- for your first ever Chinese drama XD But yes, I'm here to help for whatever, whenever!! Not just for "The Untamed", but for any- and everything Chinese drama related, too!!

I'm Chinese by blood, so Chinese dramas aren't something that I enjoy, but it's something that I grew up with, and know the culture of because it's my own culture, too! I will admit that I do not know EVERYTHING (who really can, when Chinese recorded history goes back as far as 5000+ years??? lol), but I will definitely try to help--and try to find the answers if I don't know them, myself-- as much as I can!!

I'm really happy you're here, that you've join this wonderful Dramabeans Community, and I hope we don't scare you away haha Welcome!!

1

*ARE something that I enjoy*

... sorry, I was typing too fast XD

1

@bebeswtz
I love this community too much, you can't scare me away 😉
The novel makes me love the drama even more, it feels more rounded and complete now.

Happy wee….nope nope nope.

Grandma passed away last Monday evening. We got the official euthanasia date only the evening before, when we were still wrapping our head around the fact that grandma was not physically or mentally able to survive 2021. In the span of one week her (mental) health deteriorated a lot and at the same time her date of death moved up to summer, spring, January-February and eventually Monday. Due to covid and distance restrictions most of the family said goodbye and were present at the euthanasia through livestream. The funeral will also be held through livestream tomorrow for most of us, because we are a big family.

My other pair of grandparents both tested positive. Grandpa had a nasty fall in the middle of the night this week and in order to respect our mourning they called my uncle instead to come over and help him in bed again. Uncle now has to quarantine as well and I really hope he and his wife get spared.🙏

Finally, the formation exam has been scheduled. It seems both too far away and too close. Despite going to bed very early (I am a night owl) I wake up feeling more exhausted than the day before and that hinders my concentration during the formation and study time. Everyone wants to inquire about me all the time while I just want to drag myself through the days and go to bed as soon as possible. I wish I could just pause everything and hibernate until spring.

I really hope 2021 started better for all of you.❤️

Ooof.💔 Sending lots of love your way. I hope you and your family will be held by the support of loved ones during this time. I also hope you’re able to hibernate in the capacity that you can. I cope by reducing social contact to bare minimum when I feel overwhelmed, so I understand. Please take good care of yourself.💗🙏

Hi Beanies! Got 4 teeth literally hanging from a wire due to a dental surgery I spend too way too long trying to avoid and just became bigger and more complicated due to my cowardice. And then I spent the last days super cranky because of my soft diet and all the stitches in my mouth, but at least I got the perfect excuse to just lay in bed, ah! I don't know what's my bottom line here... People, go and do what your dentist tells you I'm due time? Dramas feed the soul of the hungry? 🤔

ouch...
not wanting to go to the dentist is not cowardice. I've gone to good dentists but it's still a very uncomfortable experience for everything more intense than a teeth-cleaning session.

I usually don't mind going to the dentist, but this was a bit on the gory side... The silver lining is that I got to eat a lot of ice cream and lounge in bed with my laptop for a couple of days 😋

I had a jaw problem when I was growing up (my lower jaw was bigger than it should be and it had to be corrected), so I suffered quite a lot in my teens. That’s why I find going to the dentist like a nice trip, because it can never be worse than that.

I'm sorry that you had to go through that in your teen years - and, yes, that sounds like hardcore dental stuff, any routine intervention probably sounds like a walk in the park after that 💪😊

Dental stuff is tough. Well done on getting it done.

I don’t have great teeth (and let’s be honest, I don’t help myself as much as I could with my diet) and i know my dentist quite well 😅 but still big stuff like that is hard.

My wisdom teeth "surgery" was a nightmare... both times...

So fighting! Be careful, wounds in the mouth are easy to become infected.

I'm terrified of going to doctors generally, dentists included. :( So I understand what you mean. But glad it's been sorted out and that you're on the mend. Kdramas definitely feed hungry souls

And hungry bodies, eh! Not being able to eat properly is making me crabby. Dramas help put my mind away from my belly (at least until everybody decides to have some PPL snacks 😂)

It’s beautifully made @ks. 😊 Thank you for making it and sharing it with us. The world has become somewhat a crazy place, but don’t remember that we Beanies are here and there is at least one very place that you can rest heart and soul -in Baby’s smile ofc. ☺️

It’s ok to be vulnerable, I’m like that most of the times. And as Mi-Joo said in Run On “You don’t have to overcome everything.” Give yourself some love and appreciation, I’m willing to lend Baby to you for 1 whole day. 🤣🤣🤣

What a beautiful video! Sending love and support your way, @ks - life can be so very hard and unfair. I’ve been finding comfort in a quotation from Crash Landing on You: “Fortune and misfortune are like twisted rope, so they come by turns. Everything will be fine soon.” It’s hard to remember this and feel that it’s true when we’re up to our eyeballs in the difficult periods, but hang in there.❤️❤️❤️

Currently watching Run On, The Uncanny Encounter (though I've decided to take a break till more episodes are released), and Lovestruck in the City, and so far I'm absolutely loving the first, whereas the second is alright and the third is just meh.

Can't wait for all the upcoming dramas.

My back is hurting a lot with all the assignment completion and online classes. Drama watching is on hold for now except Mr Queen which is my happy pill. The Grand Queen Dowager may be horrible but her scenes with Bong Hwan's food or rather the anticipation of it is hilarious. I might re-watch INAR as I wait for Ji Soo's new drama. My birthday is in two weeks but we don't really do anything much with birthdays in our house so I have no idea what I will be doing that day.

Hello beanie buddies! I’m watching Law of the Jungle with Chanyeol and Byungman diving for seafood in a coral reef near Dokdo Island this morning because I don’t want to get going. Monday is a holiday (MLK birthday observance) and so I’m just being lazy and counting on an extra weekend day this week. I have new editing projects that I’m looking forward to working from home.
Watching: Run On, Awaken, Cheat on Me if You Can, A Love So Beautiful, Lovestruck in the City.
Master in the House this week with three amazing musical divas was high quality, we got to see such talent! I also enjoyed the Christmas specials on Sketchbook and How Do You Play. Rain is on the last two eps of My Little Old Boy for fun eps. Tonight I’m looking forward to 1N2D. And Bang Ye Dam is all grown up (appeared on King of Masked Singer. Will Fireplace Cat remain crowned this week? Who is he?)
Is anyone else watching This Is Us? (Randall has heavy duty issues, cool but sad family story. well, the siblings all have issues, actually,) And I’m a softie for the new season All Creatures Great and Small, country life in 30s rural Scotland.
Okay, 2nd cupcakes coffee and I’m good! Have a great, safe weekend! ♥️owl

Hello Owl! Glad you are enjoying the new All Creatures Great and Small.. so am I! Just to let you know that it's actually based in Yorkshire, a county in England, although the main character James is indeed Scottish. If you are British.. sorry if this comes across as patronising! Lol

Hello Beanies! Happy Friday!

I have been so slammed at work since 2021 began, and while I generally like being busy, it all feels a bit overwhelming right now (and it doesn't help that many of us are stuck being 24/7 parents, and some of us (ok, me) aren't really cut out for that). Apologies for TMI.

I'm glad to have this spot and k-drama as a sort of virtual happy place I can to get away from it all. In fact, I've been watching a lot of older dramas, and I have to say that, generally speaking, the older dramas seem to be better written, even if the production value leaves a lot to be desired?

Finally, a question for those of who know Korean or are very familiar with the language. Is there a standard South Korean accent that all actors adopt for dramas? I've noticed that regional accents are sometimes featured, but that's usually a plot point, and the vast majority of characters all speak with the same (I assume Seoul) accent. It reminds me a little of Germany, where everyone uses the same generic accent in public (incl. on TV), and regional accents and slang are sort of reserved for informal conversation.
