Song Joong-ki sets the stage for tvN’s Vincenzo

New promos have been released for tvN’s upcoming Vincenzo, featuring new character stills and a video teaser featuring the show’s headliner, Song Joong-ki (Arthdal Chronicles).

The drama stars Song as the titular Vincenzo, a former mafia lawyer who is forced to leave his Italian mob family due to internal betrayals. Returning to Korea, he becomes a dark vigilante for justice and teams up with other veteran lawyers. And together they work to undermine criminals who can’t be caught using the law alone, even if it means using methods that are morally questionable.

Although not pictured in the promos, the drama line-up also includes Jeon Yeo-bin (Be Melodramatic) and Taecyeon (The Game: Towards Zero) as the lawyers who join forces with Song Joong-ki. And Kwak Dong-yeon (No Second Chances) will be one of their targets.

The supporting cast also includes Yoo Jae-myung (Itaewon Class), Kim Yeo-jin (Extracurricular), and Jo Han-chul (Old School Intern) among others.

The newly released teaser places Song Joong-ki in an empty but shadowy hall only lit by the light from the windows. In a sequence of shots, we see him walking through the space and also sitting on a chair. And the camera focuses on a few key props: a lighter, gun, set of scales, a glass of wine that shatters and spills, and a flying dove. Song explains in voiceover, “I didn’t come her to negotiate but to warn. Because the final judgment will be made by me.” And the teaser comes to a close with Song aiming the gun at the audience.

Writing for the drama is Park Jae-bum (Fiery Priest, Chief Kim) and directing will be helmed by PD Kim Hee-won (The Crowned Clown, Money Flower).

tvN drama Vincenzo is currently set to air next month on February 20 and will be broadcasting on weekends, following Mr. Queen.

Oh yeah! I (we) need to hear some ITALIAN for a change, not always English.......they should experiment other backgrounds and languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French, German...even Greek!..... also other Asian languages of course, and African!....ok asking for too much maybe...) My inner translator speaking loudly.

Gee, ya' think the producers of Mr. Queen would have thought their gender-swapping, time-traveling, revisionist history fantasy saguek would be followed by a drama with a MORE eyebrow raising premise?

For those who have not seen ARTHDAL CHRONICLES here is a side by side look of twins Eun-seom/Saya played rather well (imo) by Song Joong-ki:

Couldn’t watch AC even though I liked each of the actors separately. I think I stuck through the first few episodes when I couldn’t take anything of that drama anymore. I dropped the Eternal King like that too, though EK lasted longer with me, watched the first 10, then said goodbye forever.

I will give Vincenzo a try mainly due to my love for jeon yeo bin. I hope sjk brings his charm to this role and this proves better than AC.

tvN's VINCENZO is one of my most eagerly awaited dramas. I have seen a number of articles online reporting that it will air on Netflix but I can't find anything official from Netflix (US). SJK's SPACE SWEEPERS is scheduled to air on Netflix on Feb. 5. Hopefully my availability angst will be soon assuaged with an official news release from Netflix.
Now that AWAKEN has concluded I am holding my one tvN slot for VINCENZO.

The writer-PD combo is intriguing... I don’t know how it will work out because the writer seems to do comedy well and the PD likes brooding beautiful scenes (like in the teaser). The synopsis suggests it could very well be a CHIEF KIMesque story or a full on revenge melo. Will Song Joong-Ki be willing to look silly on camera like Namgoong Min in CHIEF KIM or Kim Nam-Gil in FIERY PRIEST? Those quirky characters were pivotal in making those dramas stand out from the crowd.

The writer is totally new to me. Director Kim Hee-won I only know from THE CROWNED CLOWN which was one of my favorites of 2019. Based on TCC I think Director Kim is gutsy if how she handled both Kings is any indication.

She is an excellent director. I became aware of her because of Money Flower(2017). That drama had a lot of top acting talent and she seems to get great performances from everyone. A director that I follow.

@marcusnyc20 you should really watch FIERY PRIEST (crime/comedy) and CHIEF KIM (office/comedy) when you have the time. Both are ensemble dramas where you come to love the whole gang, and yes, maybe even a few villains. The leads are superb.

Director Kim is very gutsy indeed...

@wishfultoki,
I have had CHIEF KIM on the back burner for quite awhile. NGM is one of my favorites. I really enjoyed his performance in AWAKEN which might not have been everyone’s cup of tea.

1

I really need to get on The Fiery Priest!! I saw some clips/heard about it as it was 2019's most successful K-dramas. Also KNG <3 <3 But I heard it drags in the middle? Argh!!! Need to get on this stat!!

I'm glad to see more female PDs in K-drama land, so yay!!! Hope VINCENZO is in a similar route, altho the writer might want to show off his versatility as the teasers seem more dramatic/action packed.

1

I'd love this if it's in the vein of Chief Kim or Fiery Priest.

Chief Kim was clever funny alongside the physical humour that NGM put on such fine display. I don't remember now why I dropped Fiery Priest, but vaguely, IIRC I thought it was a little bawdy, which didn't work for me. I might be completely mistaken. I should probably revisit. Maybe now that I'm familiar with the writer's style from Chief Kim, I might be more generous in accepting Fiery Priest.

1

@pickleddragon Oh yeah I know what you mean w/ Fiery Priest's bawdiness. Some plot lines were played in a way that was a bit culturally insensitive (Like the Thai character)/religious aspects that could rub people the wrong way which is the criticism I read about the show. Meanwhile, Chief Kim was humorous and more easier for people to gel, comedically speaking since it's an office comedy. I did hear that Fiery Priest centered around a murder mystery, but it was the actors (Male Lead) that killed it/made people stay w/ the show. I found, sometimes 2-4 episodes for me tells me the tone of the show.

2

For now Netflix has Run On, the uncanny counter and lovestruck in the city as programs on the air and since of the three, one is already finished and the other two are in their final stretch, maybe we will see this program on Netflix, the rumors point to Vincenzo and sisyphus for the platform, but still nothing is confirmed and this has me waiting.

No doubt that Song Joong-ki is handsome on camera, but does this premise make any sense? He was a mob lawyer, so when the mob kicked him out, he came to execute justice in Korea? Like, what??? How does a mob lawyer get credentials to be a vigilante force for justice? Doesn't he himself carry the stain of having worked on behalf of the bad guys all those years? If he's turning his life around, how does he get redemption as a vigilante? Or are we not supposed to care whether there's a plot?

To be fair, the gimmick about reformed crooks fighting crime/injustice or seeking righteous revenge has been around forever to one degree or another in many mediums from great movies (The Sting), cheesy TV series (It Takes a Thief and Leverage), kdramas (Bad Guys). What makes this such an eye-roller for me is the inexplicable character background choices...

You are not alone wondering about this. Maybe this make things a little more clear as Song joong ki himself talked about this drama.
“I felt thrilled after coming across the script for the first time. It wasn’t a predictable story about good overcoming evil, and the method of punishing evil felt very new and refreshing. I think viewers will be able to feel the same thrill and catharsis.”

“Although Vincenzo looks to be Korean on the outside, he’s Italian to the bone. Since he has always lived as a foreigner in the darkness, he’s a lonely figure who can’t even open up to people who are close to him. An interesting point in the drama will be Vincenzo’s change.”

I'm thinking that his character will be more of an antihero vs hero, much like his role in Innocent Man. Since it's about a lawyer who catches criminals who can't be caught only through the law, that fits the vigilante description.

Same director as Money Flower, that unforgettable, glorious rollercoaster ride. Might be time for a re-watch.

But how come there's no snark down here about Taecyeon playing...a lawyer. Is it that there are so many other questionable items about the storyline that Taecyeon playing A Lawyer is getting a pass?

He'll look good in a suit, so there's that.

I want to watch it for Jeon Yeo Bin! I love her since Be Melo, she was so good in this drama. Besides, I think Son Seok-Koo or Yoo Teo would have been good in this kind of role. Yoo Teo did great in Money Game. I can picture him talking Italian but Song Joong Ki...

There is Kwak Dong Yeon too! As a crazy villain, it will be fun to watch.

I have a feeling the cringe will be strong with this one. Although the background story of the ML makes me hope for a dash of comedy à Chief Kim (like many of you suggested), I get a very melo feel from the promo. Song Joong-ki is great with melo but the story in itself feels a tad on the ridiculous side and SJK, I feel, as an actor takes himself very seriously. It might also be hilarious and hilariously embarrassing and funny in it's own way because of that, but I'll wait and see what the other beanies have to say first.

This Soompi article from early in January gives descriptions of some of VINCENZO’s characters:
https://www.soompi.com/article/1447000wpp/song-joong-ki-jeon-yeo-bin-2pms-taecyeon-and-more-hold-script-reading-for-upcoming-drama

It seems KDY’s character will be SJK’s nemesis. Remember KDY in RL is 23 years old. His character is described this way:

“Kwak Dong Yeon plays Jang Han Seo, the president of Babel Group, a man with a crazy side and no sense of conscience. He is a villain who is obsessed with winning and uses tyranny and abuses of power to get what he wants, making him a target for Vincenzo Cassano.”

I recall his performance in RADIO ROMANCE (2018) where he played a practicing psychiatrist. There at age 20-21 he was playing someone who would probably be in his thirties by the
time he is a practicing psychiatrist. He gave a nice performance but I don’t think I fully bought into his character. I don’t want to ruin it for people who might want to check out RR. His character was very important.

I guess I will just have to wait and see how he handles his role in VINCENZO. I do wish him and the rest of the cast luck.

"Remember KDY in RL is 23 years old."
You had to remind me, didn’t you.
Honestly, I find him such a scene stealer and a chameleon actor that I always forget he’s 97 line, despite the mental meltdown that occurred, personally and on the beanie wall, when we found out after Moonlight Drawn By Clouds. He was only 19 in that. Nineteen!. You would never have guessed.

Amusing that you bring up RR- I dropped that half way, despite the fact that I thought all the actors were trying very hard. I only remember his psychiatrist role seeming very deliberately off. Lol. Have you seen him in anything else?

I’ve been wanting him in a PROPER lead role for years now, and am still hoping for it, but I know he’ll nail his role in this and I’m looking forward to it.
(Come on dramaland, you’ve been so good at listening to me so far: Double Zombie drama calls, 12 episode dramas, I’m getting A drama set in Not Joseon (still waiting on that Three Kingdoms Fantasy though…) you gave a lead to my boy KKN… so how about one for KDY, huh? And a lead comeback for Seul Gi while we’re at it. Hmmm?)

Chameleon is the word for KDY! I sat through MDBC ONLY for him, and uff, was he something else. And his turn in My Strange Hero, too! And that 4 minute cameo in It's Okay. He's definitely got to get that lead sometime soon. Infinitely more talented than so many of the 25-year-olds even that populate kdramaland already.

Right??? He's something else.
I often wonder why people like him DON'T get more leads; imo the only thing he's lacking is, what... height? And that's not even a given: Yeo Jin Goo is shorter than him!!!!! Le sigh.
(is it the lack of child actor, model or idol blood? is it like with Seul Gi in that Korea thinks she's not "pretty" enough? that would be as much of a crime for him as it is for her if so. is it the lack of oh idk some big-name-hack-writer drama under his belt? did none of his dramas go viral enough? je ne comprende pas)
