Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 1-7, 2021

Entering February, the last of 2020’s dramas are trickling out. Rom-coms Run On and True Beauty aired their finales, both to decent ratings. They didn’t get much higher than 3-4 percent throughout their run, but they were very much loved by fans (myself included). Secret Royal Inspector, one of the few sageuks on the chart, will be ending soon as well.

With the new month, we also have some new dramas trickling in. The first of those was thriller L.U.C.A.: The Beginning, which premiered to — wowza — 5.4 percent. A pretty incredible beginning, for sure. Korea’s been loving their thrillers and sageuks lately, and we’ll be getting plenty more with the upcoming lineup. I’m excited for these newbies!

Mr. Queen got a steady rating. I hope the one of the final three episodes will be getting the highest rating ever.

I felt embarassed by head-on overall ratings battle between True Beauty and Run On.

Despite of its good storylines, Run On overall ratings lost 3% overall rating ranges and didn't gain one step of 4% rating ranges to True Beauty which was peaked at ranges of 4%.

After 16 episodes RUN ON’s average rating was 2.997% so lets call it 3%. Episode1’s rating was 2.145% and episode 16’s rating was 3.62%. Its core audience stayed with it from beginning to end. It seemed to be a favorite here on DB and I overall I enjoyed it.
From what I could find out (which is not much) RUN ON is writer Park Shi-hyun’s debut. Here is all I know about her. It includes a pic at cast script reading:

I will keep an eye out for her future projects. I think one of her strong suits was writing dialogue. The conversations between characters were terrific. I will give a shout-out to Im Si-wan’s portrayal of Seon-gyeom. Well done!

Wow! Thanks for sharing this. She’s the second former assistant of Kim Eun Seok’s assistant whose works I adore (The first one being the writer of Search: WWW). Both of them write good female characters.

YES. The dialogue in Run On was a joy. Just gorgeous. I think it was a very good drama, and an EXCELLENT drama for a first-time screenwriter.

I'm not embarrassed by True Beauty having higher ratings because it had an already existing audience from the webtoon, which gave it tons of pre-airing publicity, in addition to the star power of Cha Eun-woo and Moon Ga-young. Once the drama started, teenage girls the world over suddenly discovered Hwang In-yeop with lots of makeup and a mullet (unlike his character as the loyal body guard of Kang Tae-oh's character in Tale of Nokdu, where they didn't even notice him, and that kept ratings going up as well.

OTOH, Run On had a fairly steady rating, and I really can't remember anyone who was watching it - at least in my Group Chat - who dropped it or became disillusioned/disappointed. It was a delight from start to finish. But I think it was a much more mature drama than True Beauty, without the makjang, so the audience was mostly very different.

I personally watched Run On, True Beauty and Mr. Queen as they aired, and enjoyed all three very much. They are very different dramas, and all were well done, although for me personally, I have to say that of the three, the most outstanding was, surprisingly (especially since I don't usually like comedies), Mr. Queen.

It is a mystery to me that RUN ON did not higher ratings while MR. QUEEN got the ratings which it truly deserves.
