Drama viewership ratings for the week of Feb. 15-21, 2021
by SailorJumun
After one hectic premiere week, we’re now ~drowning~ in shows. And if you usually go by ratings before deciding what to watch, you may have some trouble this time around. Because, holy cow, high numbers all across the board!
Let’s dive right in. At the beginning of the week, we had the premiere of epic sageuk River Where the Moon Rises, which garnered 9.4 percent. Then, midweek, we had rom-com Hello, It’s Me! and sci-fi thriller Sisyphus, the latter coming in with a hefty 5.6 percent (and rising!).
The weekend, as usual, is where it’s really at, though. Hit drama Penthouse returned, and it’s already at 20 percent. We also got three very different thrillers — Beyond Evil, Times, and Vincenzo. I expected Vincenzo’s crazy high numbers, but I was also pleasantly surprised to see Beyond Evil’s. Guess I’ll just have to check out everything, huh?

Rich are effectively porn - here everything happens on grandiose level like ur in 17th century france. Hoobae was such a put off and as i said in 2020 - jtbc is on the path of tvn - there was visible difference in the working of their management but now its both parties fighting for the biggest stake in majority. I always said that i prefer JTBC but not anymore.

JTBC gives chance to stories that wouldn't necessarly attract the public but are great in the execution (acting, directing, etc.) TVN is more focused on the ratings.

Ratings bring in the advertisers, and the advertisers will bring in the money. This is how it works. No media can survive without money and ratings at all.

TVN is own by CJ Group, one of the richest companies Korea.
Money has never been an issue with TVN.

Money is one of the main motivation. Its business, not some charity. Everyone works for a progress. Someone being Rich not means they will stop seeking further progress.

Agree.
TvN dramas generally always come up with potent promising narratives with a certain grandiose tone. But sometimes IMO, they end up trying to be too clever in their execution, resulting in TvN dramas tending to be a little bit unbalanced past the halfway point and not using the story’s potential to the fullest.
JTBC dramas, you generally get more grounded stories (well, in comparison to TvN’s) with the shows relying more in the scripts, characters’ chemistry, and actor/actress skills. The plot ideas are sometimes not much at all, but the executions are more consistent.
Both channels have their hits and misses, but no one can deny that these two cable channels was the main suspects that had spurred the rapid improvement of Kdrama quality in recent years. And for that, I appreciate them both very much.

Don't get the connection between the Rich, Porn and 17th France. Could you expand that a bit?

I am definitely liking Vincenzo so far! The signature of the Fiery priest and Chief Kim's writer is quite obvious and I am so glad for it. Though the comic timing of Song Joon Ki is yet to settle in, I am more than willing to wait for the story to advance. I'm sure it is not easy to measure up to the comic timing of Nam Goong Min and Kim Nam Gil. And the cast is a hoot! I am a huge fan of Yoo Jae-Myung. He is perfect in everything I have seen of him so far. Well, my weekends will be busy busy busy!

Delighted with Vincenzo, Sisyphus and RiverWTMR. I can't believe Penthouse is back with a second season, I guess I'll have to another look. Got a headache from all the screeching and wailing from the last episode I watched in 2020 and had to give it up to preserve mental health. I think Sisyphus is very clever, absolutely love all the gadgets. Reminds all us Westerners how advanced IT &CIG is in Korea.

Talk of mental health, my friend asked me how I was watching the drama. The level of toxicity is high, but then enticing. Give up Penthouse for mental health, not sure yet. The ratings was expected though

Also I love the female lawyer in Vincenzo. Anyone who can run that far and that fast in heels that high deserves a medal. Just hope she doesn't break an ankle before the end of the series - if we see her in tackies we'll know why. :-)
