Kim Ro-woon teaches secret king Park Eun-bin in KBS sageuk romance

After weeks of speculation, casting has been confirmed for KBS’s upcoming romance sageuk Affection and the leading roles have been secured by actors Park Eun-bin (Do You Like Brahms) and Kim Ro-woon (Sunbae, Don’t Put on That Lipstick).

Adapted from a popular manga by the same title (created by Lee So-young), the drama is a fictional take on a period in Joseon history and imagines a secret king who was erased from history’s archives.

Taking on the central role is Park Eun-bin, who plays Crown Prince Lee Hwi and soon to be (secret) King of Joseon. At birth, she had been cast aside for being a girl while her twin brother was celebrated as the first son of the crown prince. But when her brother suddenly died, she was forced to take on his identity in order to conceal his death. Due to the dangers involved should the truth be revealed, she maintains an icy manner, always internalizing her true emotions, and guards herself from developing personal ties with anyone around her. As a result, she has little patience for anyone who tries to cross her boundaries or behaves in a manner outside of their station.

Kim Ro-woon plays the role of Jung Ji-woon, one of Park Eun-bin’s teachers. He’s a character who seems, in short, to be living the best life in Joseon. Tenacious, confident, and with plenty of optimism; he has a come-what-may attitude and takes his responsibilities in stride. Having been born into a family of government officials, he lives a carefree lifestyle and was privileged with good education. He passed the competitive state examinations at an early age and was rising in prominence. But something happens in his life and instead of taking the easier road of scholarly academics, he changes course and takes up healing and acupuncture instead.

Writing for the drama is Han Hee-jung (Clean With Passion for Now) and directing will be helmed by PD Song Hyun-wook (Another Oh Hae-young, Beauty Inside).

The production for KBS drama Affection is currently set to start filming and the drama is aiming to premiere towards the end of 2021.

I love both actors! So I'm happy with the pairing! 😍

I hope the writer won't add useless character and a cruel and stupid separation like in Clean With Passion, because the psy brought nothing to story except no professional behavior and she made the FL very cruel with the way she broke up without a real reason.

Same here. :D I'm hyped for that one. Girls disguised as guys has been a pet peeve of mine since reading Hanakimi in my teenage years and the few k-dramas that did it ( albeit for the horrible korean Hanakimi adaptation) - Coffee Prince, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Queen Seon Duk, are among my favorites :D
Hope the author sticks to the webtoon. The useless extra separation for the sake of drama is always jarring.

Yay Ro-woon!!! 😍 I'm so glad you accepted it!!! I will be watching for sure. As for Park Eun-bin, I don't know much about her as an actress (just saw her as a child actress at some dramas, but it did not leave a long-lasting impression), so I don't know what to expect.

As for this saguek romance. I read the manhwa, and I felt it very melodramatic. I did not even like the ending that much. I hope they change the story a bit, if not, then I will only watch Ro-woon's scenes (the rest I will fast-forward).

Maybe you would try watching Age of Youth and Do You Like Brahms? She was fantastic in both dramas and they're fun to watch.

And Stove League to add to the list. Park Eun bin is a an extremely versatile artist. Her character potrayal is always distinctly different.

Hmm That intrigues me. However, I don't feel like watching Stove League. Not really my type of drama genre. But I will definately watch this drama with her and Ro-woon.

Actually, I just read Ro-woon's character synopsis and it seems they changed the story of the ML from the manhwa. Okay, an improvement.

Another writer that I do not trust but It's good to see Park Eun-bin in a sageuk. She's one of those child actors who grew up on this genre, playing different roles from a dead poor commoner to royal princess and queen.
It'll take me a long time or maybe never to get used to the idea that men in funny hats are going to call her "Jeonha" in this drama.

I haven't seen Kim Ro-woon in a sageuk or anything before so I hope to be a fan at first sageuk like Woo Do-hwan. ( I miss you Unbreakable Sword).

@kiara, A few thoughts.
1. Re writer Han Hee-jung. I am totally unfamiliar with her work. Any thoughts on her sageuk GUNMAN IN JOSEON?
Is that one of your concerns about the writer?
2. The leads. My only Rowoon drama is FOX BRIDE STAR (2018) where he gave a pleasant performance and was in no way part of FBS’s problems. Surprisingly my only Park Eun-bin drama is BRAHMS where she gave a wonderful performance.
My concern here is the 4 year age difference with PEB being older. His character is supposed to be her/his teacher? In the synopsis above it indicated that he leaves teaching so maybe there will not be much of a teacher/student dynamic here.
3. Lol I agree with your “Jeonha” observation. Chief Eunuch presumably will be an important role. Perhaps Jang Gwang is available and can reprise his role of Eunch Jo from THE CROWNED CLOWN.
4. I totally agree with your Woo Do-hwan observation. Maybe luck will strike for Rowoon. That would be nice.

1. JOSEON GUNMAN had 3 PDs and 2 writers.
I dropped it midway even with my bias at the lead role.
It had the most uninspiring writing for a Gojong era fusion sageuks.
Kim Eun-sook's "Mr Sunshine" is far more compelling and exciting which took me by surprise since she is not known to be a sageuk writer. I guess working on the script for many years did pay off.
Anyway, I haven't liked any of this writer's dramas so he is a big question mark.

2. I think the 4 years difference is fine. He can play older with his build. Nobel male started their education as early as 6yrs old. If he was the top of his class or a child parody, he would probably be recommended as a tutor for the royals like in "Princess Man," "Moon Embracing the Sun" etc.
3. I love the eunuchs in Joseon sageuks. They are the most loyal and sometimes the best comedic relief.
4. Here is hoping :).

I am not much a sageuk fan, in general, because I am always afraid they will die... but this one I could try.
Clean with passion now was not good to my taste, but...
Let's give this writer another chance. At least is not the writer from Do do sol sol la la sol🙄

I like this pairing and I'm fine with the PD but worry about the writer. Clean with passion is okay at the beginning but near the end *sigh..

Can't wait for their chemistry on screen and off screen (Park Eun Bin and Rowoon so playful with their co-star) and Rowoon with beautiful hanbok, bring it on!

Yes ,they keep coming. A new (maybe sageuk) upcoming historical drama (possibly with Park Hyung-sik). It is based on the Chinese historical novel “The Golden Hairpin” by Qinghan CeCe.

Also Junho and Taecyeon next dramas to air at the end of the year are going to be sageuks.
I can watch one saeguk a time as long as there is not lots of politics and old men plotting and shouting “CHOOOOONAAAAAA” all the time 🤦🏼‍♀️

I can't picture Taec in a sageuk...I really can't...

I like sageuks, but sometimes the royals and politics frustrate me. I wished they made more sageuks around the commoners instead of Palace life...all...the...time...

*I've been secretly wishing for a Reply series during Joseon...*

“NOKDU FLOWER” was excellent.

@kiara Nokdu Flower is on my list ;) I will watch it when I have time.

100 Days My Prince the commoners part was excellent too, but it was a downgrade when he returned to the palace and the politics started...sigh...

Congratulations Junho on completing your military service and discharge Saturday in South Korea! Welcome back.

@eazal, Thanks for the Junho and Taecyon sageuk tips. My 2021 sageuk list will need to be updated. After a cursory search this is what I came up with:
1. MBC's RED CUFF SLEEVE. It looks like Junho may be taking the lead role we thought Kim Kyung-nam was to play. KKN is now part of the cast of REVOLUTIONARY SISTERS (o/t check out KKN's hair there.)
2. tvN's TALE OF THE ROYAL SECRET INSPECTOR AND JO YI. It seems Taecyon has been offered the lead role that Jo Byung-gu was supposed to play.

Park Bo-young was excellent in "King and I" (2007) so I kept hoping to see her back in a sageuk. She's quite the dynamite for a girl her size lol.

I won't object to a reunion between the two Parks.

2019 was a great year for sageuks (just the ones I watched: THE CROWNED CLOWN, KINGDOM, HAECHI, NOKDU FLOWER, ARTHDAL CHRONICLES, JOSEON SURVIVAL, and MY COUNTRY). There were others that I did not catch.
In contrast in 2020 sageuks were sparse (I watched QUEEN: LOVE AND WAR, KINGDOM 2, and KING MAKER: THE CHANGE OF DESTINY.
2022 is turning into a banner year for sageuks quantity wise. At year’s end we can for quality.

At first I began wondering if the manga was actually the Japanese manga Ooku, which is about the shogunate through the alternative history when a deadly plague kills exclusively male, and how the country developed as a result.

And when I read it and watched the Japanese live-action adaptation, I kept thinking that it would be an interesting SKorean remake, as from my understanding, Joseon was very gender-segregated and increasingly misogynistic. More than anything, I am curious how a female version of the Korean dragon robes would look like.

Also, to bring in my never-ending love for Queen For Seven Days, that drama’s female lead should totally have some major role then, either as the antagonist or the female lead.

At any rate, I am excited to see this adaptation, almost want to check out the original format. Hope it will be good!

This is a big fat maybe for me as I love both of these leads. But why a "secret king" who is really a woman? Why not do a Pre-Joseon Sageuk and go back to Silla- which actually had not one but 3 ruling female monarchs (all of them quite capable) in its history?

The main purpose of the story is a woman disguised as a man. If she can be a Queen who reigns, there is no more plot :p

I have always seen comments about Eun Bin resembling J-Hope. Maybe the production team can consider casting him as her twin brother here lol. Otherwise, I think they are probably going with a dual role just like in "You're Beautiful".
