Jang Ki-yong and Hyeri are incompatible roomies in new character teasers for My Roommate Is a Gumiho

New character teasers have been released for tvN’s upcoming fantasy rom-com My Roommate Is a Gumiho, starring Jang Ki-yong (Born Again) and Hyeri (Miss Lee).

The drama has Jang playing a gumiho who is almost a 1000 years old. Although he has been living discreetly among humans for as long as he can remember, he somehow gets involved with college student Hyeri after a potentially life-altering blunder. This results in unexpected circumstances surrounding his soul crystal (something that’s been in his care for centuries) and the two are forced to become roommates.

The first teaser focuses on Hyeri’s character, Lee Dam. As she sits at her desk looking contemplative, delicate music plays in the background and Jang Ki-yong describes her in voiceover: “I can tell what kind of person she is. She has a fair and pure heart.” Cut to a close-up of Hyeri’s notebook as the music switches to a comical tune. On the blank page, she writes: “Gumiho? Maybe a con artist?!” And the captions on the left highlight 3 points: “Cohabitation / Contract / Con Artist?” Researching a law book, Hyeri types up a contract proposal and surprises Jang Ki-yong by slamming it onto his desk. She declares, “Whether you’re a gumiho or not, I’m not going to get scammed by you. Sign the contract.” Text appears on the screen describing who she really is: “A present day human born in 1999 who gives off icy vibes.” The video comes to a close with Hyeri’s narration, “tvN’s My Roommate Is a Gumiho premieres May.”

The second teaser is focused on Jang Ki-yong in the role of a gumiho named Shin Woo-yeo. It starts with Jang sitting in a darkened blue room as lightning flashes and ominous music plays in the background. Hyeri describes that, “He has perfect looks. But the blood… blood!” And as dark blood drips onto a white floor, she screams. Cut to Jang Ki-yong following Hyeri around the room and nagging at her, “I’m pretty sure I told you that curfew is 10pm.” The music takes on a lighter tone and the captions explain that: “He is strict / He is solemn / He is serious.” Holding a cup of latte, he begins to exposit, “In my day…” while Hyeri yawns and expresses her tiredness. As the teaser closes, the final captions explain that Jang is a “999 year-old gumiho who is strict, solemn, and serious.” Jang Ki-yong explains in voiceover, “tvN’s My Roommate Is a Gumiho premieres May.”

Directed by PD Nam Sung-woo (Old School Intern) and written collaboratively by Baek Sun-woo (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim) and Choi Bo-rim (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim), tvN’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama My Roommate Is a Gumiho premieres next month on May 26.

I haven’t seen any of Dukseon’s dramas since Reply 1988.
I don’t know about this one. It doesn’t look exciting to me.

I was very excited for Oh!Master and its cohabitation trope, but it's a disaster for me.

I wasn't excited for this one because of the actors... Maybe I will test it, the story can be fun or I will wait for reviews...

I am really looking forward to this, especially if they play up the angle of the 999-year old gumiho being a curmundgeon..."back in my day". Really, a being who has lived that long you have to expect him or her to be pretty set in their ways.

This looks like it will be a comedy. Here we will be able to tell if JKY is a good actor or "just tall" as one beanie put it so eloquently, lol.

JKY has so much potential, but he's kinda being wasted rn. Doesn't help that his next project after this one is another rom-com, and he's going to enlist next year. Hopefully, he comes back from the military a re-charged actor.

I liked him in Go Back Couple and Come Here and Hug Me but everything else has been a mess.

Yeah, his agency or him is choosing easy cash grab products it seems rather than interesting quality work. Seo Kang Joon is another ex. where b/c of his looks/build, he was getting type cast into those type of roles. But it seems w/ Watcher, that's changed, and he's been carving out an interesting path for himself since. But that was after SKJ left his former agency (the one that kept choosing his projects for him), and now he's choosing his own, the quality's improved. Perhaps, JKY has to leave YG+ for that, but I doubt it since he began there. So, after military it is :O

I think SKJ was also great in AYHT playing a robot and a human at the same time.

As for JKY, I agree that he has a lot of potential, only that he is very unlucky in the projects that he is in. I have been impressed in all of the dramas that I have seen him in (CHHM and Kill It) but I might take a pass with this one because of the FL. Will instead look forward to JKY's project with SHK.

Jang Ki-yong is a hit or miss and Hyeri is almost always a miss (except Reply 1988 ofc). I’ll see what the people say about the first few episodes before checking it out. I hope it’s good because I can’t resist some good cohabitation hijinks.

Also, Kang Hanna is apparently in this drama and NOT as a bitchy, antagonistic type second lead?? Drama gods, please let this be good, I’m begging you.

I was hoping that Kang Hanna would get a female lead role- she is too good to remain a second lead forever.

I’ve been waiting for Kang Hanna to become the female lead in a drama for YEARS now. She’s simply too good of a talent to waste in second lead roles. I honestly feel bad for the female leads playing opposite her as the second lead because she steals the show.

Somehow... I feel Hyeri should not do romantic comedies (fantastical or not), I feel she doesn't have the vibe of a romantic interest, like she is not the Aphrodite type. But, in the other hand, I really like her, doesn't matter what she does. Even in entertainers, where people criticized her acting, I liked her there. She was amazing in Miss Lee...
So, of course I want to watch this and see what happens 😊

Ooh interesting on the Aphrodite type. I actually find a lot of K-drama actresses in 2015-now, to be more on the cutesy side. I mean, actresses from the 1st/2nd generation were more mature/womanly? Ex. Kim Sun Ah, Go Hyun Jung, Gong Hyo Jin, Kim So Yeon, and etc. Now a days, the Aphrodite types tend to be in the 2nd FL :/ Which are typically cast as b*tches in rom-coms :/

It looks to me that her character is neither cutesy nor Aphroditic. The vibe I am getting is a snarky young know-it-all. Who is about to confront someone who has a 975 year advantage in terms of knowledge and experience. This should make for a far more intelligent and interesting story, and far more of a comedy.

Oh I get your point. Yeah, there going more for a meet cute, enemies to lovers situation which I love. But this is clearly going more for the comedy route. Plus, I don't Hyeri can pull off the more dramatic fare. I didn't see it, but I heard Lovecraft Country did a good job with presenting the Gumiho in a cool way.

I am glad too- rom-coms are supposed to be comedies after all. Which is why I like alternatives to the first two styles that were mentioned. For comedy can anything beat a Spencer Tracy - Katherine Hepburn Strong Man butting heads with a Strong Woman story?

Look what happens when the drama writer forgets that a rom-com is supposed to be a comedy- that seems to be what has happened to OH MASTER- extraneous and unnecessary bells and whistles have been added which detract from the actual story. It looks like for this show the writer is not making that mistake- or so we can hope.

I am not saying Hyeri is"basic". I don't know either who her boyfriend is.
I just said, personally, I don't feel she is like a typical FL.
But I really like her, and her appearance is very good. She is pretty.

In this case, yes, and again, from the teaser, I like her character already as well...
But before, I meant in general... her appearance, and voice and dressing style... I feel she is not a typical actress to have romantic roles. Still, and again, I like her very much. And if she is up to have a love line with a ghumino, well, let it be!!!! 😬

Oh what do you mean by appearance? Are you saying she's 'basic'? I hate to bring this but her bf is considered a great actor, so I wonder how they handle that lol.

Oh sorry about that! Read your reply wrong. I get it now!

Yeah, she's more in your face/distinct b/c her most famous role Reply 88 is her iconic role. So its hard not to see that and not see Hyeri instead of the role she's playing at times.

The only good thing is the PD/writer all have good success in rom-com dramas, so I'll say there in good hands!!

So many K-drama rom-coms turn a hard left into trauma/amnesia land, its mind boggling lmao. That's why Into the Ring was so refreshing b/c there was none of that!! It knew what it was, a rom-com!!

I think we need a concrete story aside from the budding romance!! Also c h e m i s t r y is very important too!!

On Oh My Master!: When they replaced the PD who did YDMC (Which I loved) mid way through shooting, I had red flags. That showed me they had no clue what direction they wanted their show to go into. Fans should be lucky that its to getting cut as IQIYI produced/funded most of it. Perhaps 10-12 episodes isn't a bad thing for rom-coms, most just don't have the story for that long sorry to say :3 Also, old K-drama rom-coms (2005-2015) strangely had better rom-coms from start to finish.
