Where I live Summer has arrived, I'm about to get my well deserved vacations after a rough year, so I'm in a good mood.
Plus, there are not one, but TWO very cute little beans in Dramaland currently: Lee Maha (Imitation) and Yeojoon (At a distance spring is green). Me love, me protect!

As with many international fans, I got into K-entertainment through "Running Man." It was different than American “variety” shows. I remember the first opening as the cast introduced themselves in a pouring rain storm. RM was one of the shows that popularized K-TV in Asia and made cast members overseas superstars.

Lee Kwang Soo has left the show due to lingering health issues from an auto accident. In the past, other members have said that the show’s pace and action has taken a toll on their bodies. Lee left the show on his terms, yet, emotional as well.

Throughout his tenure, he always stated he was an actor first and variety comedian second. The irony is that I never watched his films or dramas, except the “The Sound of Your Heart” with Jung So Min. In RM, Lee did play a pivotal role in the gamesmanship and failures as well as rare successful missions. His variety show popularity may have overshadowed his career path as an actor. But everyone wishes him well. Long running shows are always subject to change, for better or worse.

That last episode was full of so many emotions. I kept laughing and crying. The members kept trying to show their love for Kwang Soo in so many little little ways. That sprout went ahead to become such a big giraffe. Sigh.

He was wonderful in Live. It's full of brilliant acting and an eye opener to the work of the police.

They always tease him in RM but I think he is a good actor. I loved him in Dear My Friends, It’s Okay That’s Love and Live. He did an awesome job in Inseparable Brothers (Won Baeksang Award for Supporting Role).

He plays a vital role in RM. Personally, he is my favorite member and I don’t know if I can enjoy watching it as I used to now that Kwangsoo is no longer part of the show.

CRICKET - world test championship and rain.

Rain for 2 weeks and power outages for several days.

rain - love and life
rain - super cool
rain - no cricket - oh no
rain - thunderstorms - power outages - frustrating.

rain - wet outfield - effect on pitch - is one of +ve charm of cricket.

Pros and cons and you can't do without both.

happy friday beanies!!!
it’s been so long (2 months)! i missed you all. school ends tuesday, so the past month has been busy finishing up high school stuff and starting college stuff. i’m happy the year is almost over!

dramawise, i’ve been pretty slow watching. i finished AOY s1 a while ago (SO GOOD!!), stopped navillera at ep 10 (maybe i’ll finish it some day), and am on vincenzo ep 14 (which i really love). and right now, i’m watching the first ep of hosplay, season 2!!!

it feels so good to see all the characters. i love all the jokes SO MUCH. (when songhwa said she wanted to be a villain i CRACKED UP). and i noticed a callback to r94– jeongwon chucks something at junwan and junwan says, “were you a pitcher?” a chilbong reference, of course.

i started commenting on DB for hosplay s1 posts, and a whole year has come and gone already. i still remember that my first open thread post was in august 2020– i was so nervous about college applications and high school, and now, i’ll be done with school in a few days !! it’s come full circle.

i hope you guys have a good summer (or winter, depending where you live), and a good week!!

love,
shachi

Cool chilbong reference for sure. Reminds me of a reference in Master’s Sun to Pasta about the goldfish ( reference to characters played by Kong Hyo-Jin ). Clever and fun to catch.

Something rare, 'My Roommate Is A Gumiho' is running on both Netflix and Viki. Its interesting to compare translations. Viki adds its technical notes to explain obscure Korean wordplay, Netflix glosses over the problematic translation, sometimes leaving the viewer confused. Another thing Viki usually does is retain honorifics (sunbae, hoobae, ajumma, etc.) while Netflix just writes out the name.

It’s on Netflix too??? I saw it on iQIYI first. I thought the translations were pretty accurate there. When there was a thing called DramaFever, they had the most accurate subs.

I'm watching the series on *another site* with the Netflix logo fronting each episode and different translations from Viki. Where the *other site* got the Netflix version is anybody's guess.

It is on Viki now, it is NOT on NetFlix as of right now.

I noticed that (i.e., that Netflix uses names instead of the proper honorifics) sometime back but can't quite remember which drama it was. I think it depends on the subber, and Netflix has been providing subtitle credits lately; they all seem to be different people.

My very first Kdrama was Boys Over Flowers, which I watched on Netflix, and I remembered the subs did use "sunbae" properly. I was wondering what the heck sunbae meant so just searched for it online.

In general, I do find Viki's subs superior to Neflix - as subbers sometimes include little notes, and also translate the OST, giving the viewer a deeper appreciation of what's happening onscreen. I also like it that Viki includes English subs even when the actors are saying their lines in English. Netflix for some reason stops including the subs if the characters speak in English, which can be frustrating because sometimes it's hard to understand what they are saying. Space Sweepers, for example, had a lot of English lines from actors of various ethnicity with different accents. It was a bit of a struggle to understand what they were saying at times.

My wish is that written information would be translated - as neither Viki nor Netflix seem to be good with that. Unless whatever is written impacts the story/ plot in a major way, there's frequently no translation/ sub/ explanation included. I'm talking about posters/ post-its/ letters/ notes, etc. that may show up in a scene.

My Roommate is a Gumiho is available here in Canada on iQIYI and Viki (though Viki is one week behind), but not Netflix. I have not noticed how iQIYI handles honorifics but will start paying attention now! My issue with subs on iQIYI is that they can be hard to read on Apple TV (white text with not much shadow underneath), but they show up fine when watched on iPhone or iPad.

I really appreciate Viki subbing the OST although it is quite funny when the music has been changed (for instance I was just watching Shopaholic Louis and there were several times when a different song was indicated, both by the subs and the following dialogue but I guess they didn’t have permission to use in my region or something).

I also appreciate that they keep subbing when the language switches to English, that is my biggest peeve with Netflix subs - worse than when they translate “Aish!” as “F*ck!” If I’ve been reading subs it takes my brain a moment to switch back and I always miss a bit when that happens. Plus as you say with different accents …

I am so glad its on Viki now (even if the episodes are a week late). I was debating whether to subscribe to iQIYI for a month to binge watch it when it was done airing. Now I can just watch it weekly on my Viki app!
So happy!

I hope Viki will get the Chinese drama Hikaru No Go. It was the only other drama I wanted to watch on iQIYI.

So I started watching 2 Days 1 Night Season 4 from the very beginning (because of Kim Seon Ho, enough said). By coincidence, this past weekend, I finished watching episodes 31 to 33 which were set in Ulleung Island. Then I watched Master in the House and it's set in Ulleung Island as well and they had the same guest!

In fact, Yang Se Hyung mentioned that he watched another variety show that had the same guest and he left abruptly - which is exactly what happened in 2D1N, LOL.

I'm taking this as a sign that I should visit Ulleung Island someday. It looks really gorgeous.

On a sadder note, Shin Sung Rok and Cha Eun Woo are supposed to have their farewell episode this coming weekend on Master in the House. I think it's still set in Ulleung Island so at least they go off in style and hopefully have a nice mini vacation to boot. I wonder who will replace them this time.

I’m interested to see who they replace them with. I feel like the original cast were hard to beat and the new cast arrival coincided with Covid19 restrictions so they never really settled in the same.

It will be a treat to have him back! I wonder if he will be like Lee Seung Gi, who I seem to recall liked to talk about his military experiences a lot when the show first started, since he just got back then. LOL.

1

That’s what I was thinking. I’m guessing they’ll go with an actor and an idol. I’d love it if they brought on Kwanghee!

2

@owl22 I’m kind of hoping they go with only one new member because I always found five a bit crowded, especially when there’s only one master. But that seems unlikely - I expect an actor and an idol too, that would follow the pattern.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

I have been dreading this week because I was anxious about whether my doctor would extend my sick leave or not. I am relieved to report that my doctor is extending my sick leave from tomorrow onwards until mid-July. Of course that also meant I had to send all the paperwork to both my workplace and the health insurance….and call my boss.😬

I was awake around 4.30 am and killed the time until it was acceptable to log in onto my work laptop and take care of things. Of course my boss logged in very late that day, so it was nearly 11 am when I logged off and was able to breathe again. I do not blame my boss since she had a valid reason for starting late, and 11 am is still early in a day, but I do not wish the 4.30 am – 11am agony on anyone else. Fortunately she was all right to deal with for once.

In the end it was all worth it, because my health insurance fund acknowledged my sick leave! 🥳 I will have to undergo health inspection before I receive any money of course, but it is one small step in the right direction after this scary month of waiting and fretting that nobody outside of work would take my mental health seriously.

And I am turning 30 years old tomorrow. What a nice birthday gift!🎁

Oh dear Turtie. Happy Birthday and take heart. After age 30 everything came together for me, and it will for you too. A long time ago a very wise woman told me "Thirty is the old age of youth, and the youth of old age.". Instead of worry and fretting, think about enjoying every moment.

@turtuallysarcastic happy happy birthday!!!! This morning I was thinking of you and wondering how you were doing!
So glad your leave was extended! Now what to do?
What makes you smile and gives you joy?
For me it's the two little hummingbirds fighting over the feeder on my porch. Somehow they can't seem to share and while one eats, the other hoovers nearby, and then swoops in to they both fly away.
Yesterday I learned why the hummers have been flying up to my window, and when I'm outside - around my face.
The feeders needed to be cleaned and refreshed. Duh.

So that is my little story of something that makes me smile.
Here's to a birthday where you get to be spoiled and loved and smile as much as you can!!!
hugs to you!

It rained last night. I know that it many places, rain is just another day, but here in the desert it is a blessing. I stood under the porch roof and laughed a greeting to water from the sky.
Hubby and i went to see a MOVIE yesterday. Yes - in a theater, with people in masks and a big, big screen. I teared up at the overwhelming joy of being in a dark space watching a film with other people who love films.
It was "In the Heights" which had incredible dancing and song craft - my love of Bollywood blossomed again even though it was based in Nueva York.
