Kwak Shi-yang, Hani, and Kim Min-kyu to headline new JTBC drama

JTBC has announced casting information for their latest music drama called IDOL: The Coup. It looks like Kwak Shi-yang (Alice) will be headlining alongside EXID’s Hani (Not Yet Thirty, The Spies Who Loved Me) and Kim Min-kyu. The drama is about a bunch of failed idols who need at least one success to disband.

Hani plays a failed idol named Kim Jena from the group Cotton Candy that debuted six years ago. Kwak Shi-yang plays Cha Jae-hyuk, the CEO of the entertainment agency that manages Cotton Candy. Known as the “Human Calculator,” he’s extremely shrewd and cold. Finally, Kim Min-kyu has been cast as Seo Ji-han, an idol member of the trendy, popular group Mas that’s also managed by Kwak Shi-yang’s company.

The drama tells the story of the boldness of youths as they pursue their dreams and meet failure head on. It’s also about learning how to choose different paths in life when things don’t go according to plan.

According to reports, the performances and music in the drama will be specially overseen by creative experts in the industry. Specifically, Transparent Arts (that manages artists like Far East Movement and Tiffany) has joined hands with TAKE2 Media Group (that produced Age of Youth 2) and JTBC Studios, so hopefully, we’ll be in for a banging OST.

Written by Jung Yoon-jung (Bride of the Water God) and directed by Noh Jong-chan (Clean With Passion for Now), JTBC’s upcoming drama IDOL: The Coup will begin airing in the latter half of this year.

Uhm, I'm not sure the right Minkyu listed. MDL lists Produce X 101's Minkyu, not Seventeen's Mingyu, for the role and that picture is the former not the latter...

Weird how the Arang and the Magistrate and Misaeng writer ALSO wrote Bride of the Water God...
That's almost as bad as the Tree With Deep Roots and Six Flying Dragons writer, writing Arthdal... which I'm still not over, tbh.

Isn't Hani already signed up for the drama with Yoon Shi-yoon? She's gonna have a busy year!

Is this Kwak Si Yang's 1st leading role as a main in a full length mini series?! Ooh la la! He's a talented actor w/ a great build and voice. Fun fact, he and Hani did a Jeans campaign in 2015 lol, so its a real reunion this time!

He was so cool/hot in Alice. Probably the best part of that series...Would've LOVED for him to have reunited w/ Kim Hee Sun on Tomorrow, b/c the small bouts of chemistry (that wasn't creepy ahem) those two had were solid! Ugh, sometimes I wonder why certain directors don't choose outside the box sometimes...

Is this really his first lead role? That’s honestly a shame, he’s a very talented and versatile actor. But better late than never, I suppose.

He had a co-lead in some short mini series that was music based. And in a daily drama, but a true main male lead, nope. From some reason, despite his charm/talents, he hasn't popped in the eyes of directors/writers?

Which is weird b/c his performance in Night Flight was phenomenal, he should've gotten the Bleak Night treatment (Which made the 2 leads careers), but b/c it's a LGBTQ+ film, nada.

He's 35, so its an awkward spot tbh. He just needs an Alice type of role w/ a veteran FL in a much bigger role/better written series. If so, he could at least pull Lee Joon Hyuk, & get mains in less hyped but solid works.

That actor lineup, I love. Idols playing idols is something I’m in complete favour of after Imitation. Also, I just adore Hani.

However, I immediately squashed my hopes after seeing the writer. I will not subject myself to Bride of the Water God 2.0. I’ll only check it out if it gets good reviews.

Written by the author of The Bride of the Water God! 😒😒😒😒
Doesn't sound that appealing. Although it will be better than writen by the one who destroy his/her life as a writer with Do do sol sol la la sol 😂😂😂😂
