Nevertheless: Episode 6 Open Thread

As our hero and heroine spend some time apart, it leads to a lot of introspection. A change of scenery, time spent around others, and a good dose of maternal wisdom, lead both of our characters to do a lot of thinking. And slowly, that thinking leads to action.

EPISODE 6 WEECAP

More disturbed by her interaction with Seol-ah than we were led to believe, Na-bi goes AWOL. No one at school knows where she is, her phone is turned off, and her friends are left to speculate. She’s headed to the seaside village where she grew up, and stays with her artist aunt for the length of the episode, and this does a lot of things for our story.

The more we learn about Na-bi’s family and past, the more we understand why she’s resistant to dating, and reacted so strongly to her relationship with Jae-un. Na-bi and her aunt have several important exchanges, but all of them basically lead Na-bi to the same conclusion: that love takes courage.

In one example, Na-bi claims she never wanted to date after seeing her mother’s ways, but her aunt counters that her mother is brave because she is willing to love passionately again and again even after being hurt. Then there’s also the reveal about the true meaning behind Na-bi’s name. The story she was told previously was made up; the real reason is this.

Your mom says she named you that so your life would be sweet as honey. But butterflies don’t always eat honey. Insects and poop are all nutrients for them too. Everything you’re going through in your life right now are your nutrients. So what is there to fear?”

Na-bi gains a different, and possibly shifting perspective on her relationship with Jae-un, and it’s all thanks to this mid-point scenery change — a storytelling mechanism that is used to varying degrees of effectiveness, but is somehow always refreshing. Did we know we also felt suffocated by only being at the art studio and apartments and bars that our characters frequent? Once the scenery changes and the expanse opens up, it’s reinvigorating to be in nature, at the sea, and around people we trust.

It also sets up a good dichotomy. Not only to we get an even stronger sense of the innocent country girl flung into the city, but we get this polarity of “earthy” and trustworthy people from the country (Na-bi’s aunt, Do-hyuk) versus the more slick, sexy, and not-as-trustworthy people Na-bi gets involved with in the city (Jae-un, her gross ex, etc).

But above all, the time at the seaside village is time for Do-hyuk, our Potato Boy, to shine! He’s in his element here, sleepily walking around the hanok where he lives, prepping his noodle shop for its grand opening, and taking Na-bi around to the sea, to the market, and bike-riding around town.

I knew I loved his character from the start, but when he pulled up in my dream vehicle I knew it was all over for me. Jae-un, who? I expect to be in a lot of pain in the next few episodes. Do-hyuk is all smiles and sweetness, and after a gulp of soju, tells Na-bi that she’s his first love. But his confession isn’t in words only — it’s also in actions that he takes to make sure she is comfortable, safe, and happy. It’s as if Do-hyuk is doing everything Na-bi wished Jae-un would. No wonder she’s looking so confused lately.

Speaking of Jae-un, he is feeling Na-bi’s absence, and learns about the root of it from Seol-ah. After some possible philandering with a girl he meets at a bar (yay, Go Won-hee cameo!), he, too, gains some perspective while apart from Na-bi — and in the end, it comes directly from his mother (another great cameo by the ever-wonderful Seo Jung-yeon).

They’re estranged for sure, and while she hasn’t been able to give him love and attention, what she leaves with him this time (on his birthday, no less), is a brand new Maserati, and some maternal wisdom (it’s a theme this week): how can you expect anyone to love you if you don’t love yourself?

In one of the more interesting scenes this week, Jae-un also has a heart-to-heart to Kyu-hyun. Kyu-hyun opens up about how Bit-na doesn’t want to change her ways even though they’re “dating now” and he even relates that to Jae-un’s relationship with Na-bi. Kyu-hyun may be quiet, but he seems to see right to the heart of things. “Can’t you treat her sincerely?” he asks Jae-un. It’s the same thing he’s asking of Bit-na, and it’s what most of our characters are aching for. More than stability or certainty, what they yearn for is sincerity.

Eventually Jae-un can’t take Na-bi’s silence anymore, and takes his new Maserati straight to Do-hyuk’s house, where our episode ends. It’s a slow, silent stand-off between the two boys, and the moment suggests our love triangle is about to get real. And when I say real, I mean real painful.

The drama has done everything this week to show Na-bi that there’s nothing to fear and love doesn’t have to be safe, and to show Jae-un the value of sincerity. I don’t pretend to know what’s going to happen next, but I’ll eat my hat if these two don’t get together again, and get back on their rollercoaster.

I really like the aunt :)

I didn't like Seo Ji-Wan. I don't like how she interferes with Yoon-Sol's life. She knows that their friend has feelings for Yoon-Sol but she was jealous and she went to the restaurant. She needs to decide to assume her feelings or to back off.

I wonder if the drama will fall in the usual "bad guy becomes nice after meeting a nice girl" trope. For once, I hope not. Ii would be more interesting they don't end up together. But until now, Jae-Eon didn't need to make a lot of efforts and she couldn't resist, so if he really purchase her...

For the rest, I have a lot of difficulties with how some actors said their text, it didn't feel natural and sounded childish.

I think Ji Wan is still confused about what she is feeling, so I don't completely hate her for how she is acting. Sol doesn't seem to mind. Haha. But I do wonder how their friendship/relationship will play out.

Nabi’s aunt sounds like a wise lady, when she talks about everything in life, good and bad, being nutrients. But she (and millions of others) is wrong about her sister’s always-looking-for-passionate-love lifestyle. Nabi’s mom sounds like a sex addict and Nabi understands this better than her naive aunt. In many such cases we hear “he/she behaves promiscuous just like his father/mother” - well, duh, this condition is hereditary.

Why can’t I speculate about mother character being simply a sex addict instead of a misunderstood lonely woman in need of a variety of sex partners? We know nothing about her. Maybe the aunt just tried to make her sister look better in her niece’s eyes, and gives her a teachable moment speech instead of a hurtful truth. Most of us have done something like that, and rightfully so, with our nieces, be it about their mom or a dad.

Jae-eon and Bit-na are more promiscuous than Na-bi, so by that logic, his father and her mother must be raging sex addicts.

Lol. You might be on to something here.

Hey. Not our fault we have to speculate about everything here. To get better ratings and spice up “boring” webtoon, this drama’s writer sexualized everything that moves and breathes. Without any explanation or believable back stories.

I wasn’t going to comment on how different this drama version is from the original webtoon, but as a content creator myself, I really feel sad for the webtoon’s writer. It’s translated in my native language. I really liked getting pulled into the casual, calm, almost boring life of an average college girl. It’s a nice read on a rainy day. But I had to go back and reread again and again, page after page, after watching the drama.

Did they get the original author’s permission to turn the webtoon’s antagonist (Jae Eon) into a ML? I’m sure Song Kang would’ve never agreed to the role, if they didn’t change his character so drastically.
Now. About the protagonist, Nabi. In the webtoon, she leads a boring life, dating her boring former art instructor for 3 years. He forbids her to have fun, attend parties with her college friends, he wants all her attention on himself and his art work only. She doesn’t love him and dislikes their unexciting sex life.
BTW: Remember the obscene sculpture of Nabi in episode 1? In the webtoon, it wasn’t that bad, just a sexy back of a young girl. Her unknown sculptor boyfriend wanted to become noticed by making sexy young people the object of his art. Nabi got mad at her boyfriend for NOT being a model for this sculpture. He explained to her that not everyone could be a model. Then she saw him getting too close and cozy while sculpting with his female student who WAS the actual sexy back model for him. That was the last drop for Nabi. When she broke up with him, she called her boyfriend a boring idiot who only cares about his career. Then she went to her college friends and decided to start a new and fun life, appropriate for her age, because the previous 3 years were wasted on the older boyfriend. She wanted to meet someone more interesting than her ex-boyfriend. And her college professor told HER ( not everyone else) to fall in love in order to get better inspiration at her art. At the FIRST in her life college get together, Nabi meets Jae Eon. She finds him more interesting than her ex. Right there, at the party, she spilled things about her breakup to Jae Eon. So he started his game after that.

Do you see the difference in Nabi’s webtoon’s character, and why it made prefect sense THERE that she is still naive and reserved when exploring new, unknown sexual passion, even if she had a previous boyfriend of 3 years?
The changes they did to Nabi’s character in the drama made her look more fake and culpable than the webtoon’s antagonist, Jae Eon. Well. Not every good webtoon should be made or could make a good drama. But to change the story and its message THAT much, is an affront to the original creator. Poor thing.

I found it so disturbing how mom's problematic dating behaviour was being praised as "courageous" by Aunty. I'm glad Na-bi could recognise her mother's behaviour and work to avoid falling into the same unhealthy patterns. I certainly hope she doesn't change her mind after listening to Aunt's perspective!

I think this drama with Jae-un will go on for awhile more (after all, a few episodes are still left), but if the show ends by telling us that Na-bi has to eat poopy men and turn them into nutrients I will boycott this writer.

I agree. And to say that all her mom's relationships weren't a failure because she got a daughter out of it is NOT a good thing either. All that it did was repeat the cycle of women who don't know how to respect themselves enough and settle for bad treatment from men.

Oh dear, o dear! If there are any sex addicts in this drama, which I don't think is the case, it is certainly not Na-bi. Her frustration is precisely that all she ever got from Jae-un is sex and nothing more. In contrast, Jae-un does not seem to miss out on any opportunity and looks much more like an sex addict.
There is not doubt, this drama does invite speculations. But what I read in this one, I am afraid looks just like the good old stereotypical view that women who are interested in sex must be abnormal, hence addicted, ill and out of control, whereas promiscuous men are just living according to their normal, natural instincts.

I didn’t mean to blackened Nabi’s character, nor do I think she is a sex addict, it just came across that way. But her mother’s character, from the aunt’s mouth, and what from what we saw on Nabi’s birthday sure sounds like one. It’s unfortunate that people are scared away from asking for help by this condition. As a former MFT, in my 15 years practice, I mostly treated men. All the female patients with possible sex addiction were treated for other problems - it’s not an officially recognized disorder in the US. Also. Women don’t want be stigmatized with it. Many of the guys don’t care, some are even proud of it (they think it’s a sexual prowess not a problem) and therefore don’t want treatment. Their wives or mothers bring them in, not one came on their own.

"Dating isn't about picking the nicest person. It's about meeting someone special to you." Aunt's foreshadowing. As soon as the episode opened with Jae-eon's voiceover, I knew the drama changed the endgame. This is the first time we've seen his perspective. This playboy has really changed and likes Na-bi for real. Seol-ah was lying when she said they were dating.

Do-hyuk is nice but boring. It would've been a cute misunderstanding if when Na-bi said she had a boyfriend, she was talking about him. They liked each other when they were young. Na-bi did that territorial thing again when she saw Do-hyuk with his cousin Do-yeon like when the drunk girl asked Jae-eon for a cigarette or when she saw Jae-eon kiss Yoon-ji.

It was nice to get JE's perspective, albeit very frustrating. Especially when he was talking to kyu hyun. Also, did anyone see the articles about the actor who plays gyu hyun? Looks like he is the IRL Park Jae Eon. Aka trash because he cheated on his gf.

I also do think JE is slowly changing and realizing his feelings for Nabi are real. He doesn't know what to do with these new feelings, or simply wants to just push them away and not admit them, so he decided to try to get over her by what we assume is sleeping with another girl.

I am becoming more and more convinced about Nabi/Jae Eon being end game...what with the Sam Kim OST album cover and something else I saw...in the intro on Netflix, there's a a scene they show of Jae Eon posing and what looks like Nabi drawing him. I didn't pay much attention at first since I figured it might just be scenes they filmed specifically for the intro and not included in the drama, but the other scenes included in the intro appeared in the drama so it looks promising???

I don't know if Nabi was doing the territorial thing with Do Hyuk's cousin. She just seemed scared of being burned again because of what that hoobae did to her before. She panicked and was like oh shit did I misread this situation/person again?

yes i think nabi did that territorial thing again. but i think it was from flashbacks with that hoobae and her ex. kind of like a "trauma" about mis judging someone's character again.

i don't know whether it was jealousy necessarily though because she clearly has feelings for jaeon. but i would say that she did that thing because it would've put her in an awkward situation. clearly she sees dohyeok being overly kind and affectionate to her; spending all that time with her and him saying he's not seeing anyone. so seeing her with another girl in that close proximity, i think that's where that territorial thing showed up—what if he lied to me, why did he lie, this is like that hoobae again, this is like my ex again, etc..

I love Do Hyeok! I don't think he's boring. He's lovely! But alas he's not the right person for the passionate soul that is NaBi.

I truly think NaBi and Jae Eun are both transforming from caterpillars to butterflies. NaBi is transforming from a young woman trying to find true love, but finding / enjoying her sexuality in the meantime. Jae Eun is transforming from the young man trying to avoid true love while embracing his sexuality, but in the meantime finding his emotions can't be ignored.

Loving this drama thus far.

Na-bi is a pushover. Jae-eon is using her for sex. He picked up a girl at the bar with the butterfly line. He must be so boring, that is why he likes making out with new girls.
She is obsessed with Jae-on, making his sculpture. When Jae-eon told his Mom about someone who wants to go to Paris is someone he likes, he said, no, just someone bothersome. What a jerk.
Dokyung should drop Na-bi. She is as shallow as Jae-eon.

Its only assumed that he picked up the woman in the bar, the same way it was assumed he was sleeping with Seol-Ah.

Dokyung is like that 'nice guy' in episode 2, the safe alternative that caused her to laugh derisively at the mere prospect of being intimate with. Na-bi's just a college student, she shouldn't be on the prowl for a 'husband' at her age, she should be having adventures.

Good point about the bar scene. It is definitely heavily alluded that he slept with her, but they may retcon it and show that it didn't actually happen or was a misunderstanding (like the brother who hit JE because he thought JE was messing with his sister).

Honestly, I never got the vibes that JE was sleeping with Seol-Ah. Just that they had a close relationship that could, understandably, be misinterpreted and cause misunderstandings given that they used to date.

Yeah, let the girl live.

I really don't get why you guys want to defend him or make it seem like he is better than what I think he actually is. With the webtoon in mind and especially the final episode of it (ep40), if we assume that the drama tries to keep at least some aspects of the original story, the part of ep 6 where JE hits on this random girl at the bar is tightly linked to that idea conveyed by the artist in the Webtoon : JE doesn't really, actually, change. Even if the drama ads some feelings to his character, I don't think he will ever be able to overcome the original JE from the Webtoon, a insensitive, manipulative, constant, self-centered JE. That's what the scene at the bar means to me : he's still somehow the JE portrayed in the Webtoon.

Aw, it's all in good fun lol. I know it is wishful thinking, but who knows, dramas like to throw us curve balls sometimes. Also, when they adapt webtoons to dramas, they do tend to make changes to the source material to make it more appealing to the general public. I wouldn't want to watch a drama where the main lead is a total ass and unlikable from start to finish.

I think it is OK to reference the source material, but you should look at the drama as a separate entity since the script writer may interpret it differently than you or me. Like you said, "what you think he actually is."

And us trying to defend his actions is not completely without reason, as I mentioned previously, there was that misunderstanding with the brother and his sister. And the drama has shown us some character development...although it seems to have regressed a bit.

I haven't read the webtoon, but I have seen comments about how they do not end up together in the end. Again, just wishful thinking on my part that he will maybe change (I blame HP fanfiction lol). But, alas, that is the fun of dramas (they are unrealistic for the most part).

5

Episode 40 of a webtoon I haven't seen is beside the point. Maybe Nabi is destined be murdered by potato guy and made into a stew but since that hasn't happened in the drama yet I won't concern myself with it.

4

I would also take a bet that the bar encounter ended in the bedroom, the lady seemed to be up for it.

And I also agree that Jae-un and Seol-Ah are not friends with benefits. I am more and more convinced that Seol-Ah is ill and relies on Jae-un's support. She might even have been abroad for treatment. That could explain why he describes their relationship as fated and why he normally ditches everybody when he receives her calls.
But as ever, the drama only gives hints!

in the episode nabi mentioned that they were best friends. so yes it's understandable on the feelings side of dohyeok that it would be better to just cut ties, but its the fact that they were friends and nabi had no idea at the time and he didn't show up for her in their friendship. idk if its just me, but if i secretly liked my friend but they were moving somewhere else, regardless of whether i hear that they have a significant other and it hurts, i would still show up and say goodbye as their friend.

also it's not like he moved on. it literally left him with unresolved feelings. he's still having this one sided love with nabi and they met again at different circumstances.

Jae Eon, where did your development from the previous episode go?! Hope he didn't really pick up that girl at the bar because boyyyyy. You need a good smack! It was interesting learning about JE's thoughts through the voiceovers, though. Wonder if they are going to continue that or do a mix of both Nabi and JE in each episode now?

I was surprised that Seol-Ah came clean to Jae-Eon. It seems she really does care for him and realized that he is not her's anymore and that JE must have real feelings for Nabi. Also, when did she take his lighter? Totally thought it was her own that she told JE she threw away. Glad that they didn't make her completely into the crazy, jealous ex-gf.

All the metaphors and foreshadowing from Nabi's aunt and JE's mom is giving me some hope?? That preview though for ep. 7 when JE asks why him having a gf is an issue...hope that is just the drama trying to mislead us because ughhhhhhhhh. Please just tell her the truth about Seol-Ah lying about it.

Why did they cut out the scene of Do Hyuk hugging Nabi? They made it such a big deal in the preview. Hope they don't flashback to it later/retcon it to push the Do Hyuk/Nabi pairing more. This episode was slow and seemed like a filler episode, but I understand why they needed it. To give both her leads time to think and to give more foundation for the love triangle. Potato guy is nice and all but...he still feels a bit too much for me and kind of zzzzzz. Even Nabi fell asleep while he was talking. LOL. Jk. I know it's because she was drunk.

And how dare they leave the episode with that cliffhanger!! lol I was hoping to see a bit more interaction between the three of them, but they just served us crumbs this episode (aka whatever was in the preview and that's it).

Thoughts on Week 6:
-Is it Kyu-Hyun who's giving Jae-Eon perspective on his love life? bwahaha xD Holy shit, a 5 min convo with beanie-dude gave JE more insight on Nabi than spending time with her actual self ever could. I don't think it speaks greats things about their 'relationship'
-Are we getting JE's monologues too? So, is this where is redemption-arc starts? :O
-Homeboy got gifted a Maserati? Like seriously... does nice potato-boy on the bicycle have a chance now? Me thinks not xD
-Somebody said Nabi being ultimately unable to fix the shelf, when she thinks she has... is a metaphor of her not being able to fix/change JE at the end of it. Kwool, I mean, Auntie's speech right there had me worried it's going down the cliche route!
-Every time I saw Do-hyeok's sunshine smile... i melted T_T
-Is sadboi-face on SK supposed to make us feel an iota of sympathy for the character? Really? Am I missing something... because more than a fuckboi, he comes across as a pathetic jerk and a coward. I think at this point, both JE and SK know how much of a loser the character is.
-Hmm, JE is more self-absorbed than I initially thought. He has the audacity to pretend it's about him and how *HE*'s the one who's hurt in all this, and has like half a pence worth of empathy and understanding for Nabi. Hah! He needs to get his head out of his butt.
-The only conclusion I have on Nabi is she's a very wishy-washy in her resolve. People talk shit about JE- she breaks up with him. Her aunt says one arbitrary statement about love and the 'right person', and she's reconsidering giving him a second chance. When will this end? -___-

I agree, the star in this episode was Beanie-dude. Not only did he lay the finger right on the issue, but he told Jae-un - 'You know what you are doing wrong'. He really hit the nail on the top.

The aunt wanted to support and reassure Na-bi, but I do scratch my head a little at what she said. If you are love sick, does it really help if somebody tells you that love is not always rosy?

Nabi and Jae-un are clearly not finished with each other. Do-huek's timing is unfortunate, but I still have hope for those two. What I see is that Na-bi is relaxed in his presence, happy and free to be herself. With Jae-un she is always stressed and nervous, afraid to cross his lines, questioning the meaning of his actions towards her, looking out for lies. Once she realizes this, it will be curtains for Jae-un.
There is no room for Do-hyuk in Na-bi's heart just now, I predict a time jump.

I think another theme this week was - you cannot change your inherent character no matter how much you try or that we keep making the same mistakes, dating the same people over and over again.
-Na-bi could not fix the slanting nature of her aunt's shelf even after many attempts
-Even though Jae-on missed Na-bi and got all the wisdom around sincerity, he couldn't help himself and went back to his old tricks with the lady in the bar (probably even slept with her)
- Even though Do hyuk is all smiles and attentiveness, he reveals the one strange thing about him this week i.e he always is attracted to women who already have boyfriends and he is doing it again clearly.

For Dohyuk, I thought he was referencing the incident when Nabi left for Seoul and he didn’t go to see her. If there has been other crushes in the years since (I hope), his crushes never led to a confession/relationship because he would found out about the girl’s relationship status. It is not that he liked the girl because she was in a relationship...I don’t understand how you got « he is only attracted to women in relationships » from their conversation. Unless Netflix’s English subtitles are wrong and he really said that?

Nah, I do not think Do-Hyuk likes women because they are dating someone else (just like Na-bi is not into men because they are emotionally insincere) but just that they unknowingly have a tendency to be drawn to people who turn out to be this. Its like having a type, I think.

Though I agree that nowhere did it say explicitly that Do- Hyuk even had other crushes who also had boyfriends - there is line where he says "he kept liking someone who had a boyfriend" (it could mean Na-bi only or one or two other such women).

How does everyone else interpret the pencil rolling away from the shelf scene? Is it trying to tell us that stability is an illusion?

LOL. A few meanings crossed my mind as I watched that scene. First, things are 'uneven' for NaBi right now, as she feels very strongly about Jae Eun, but she's getting nothing in return, or so she thinks. Then, are you really able to keep anything 'straight' or 'level' in your life if you're not wiling to be honest with yourself / with others? Finally, is she out of sorts / uneven because she's 'run away' from her more involved life at school to an easier, less complicated life in her hometown?

Oy! This series keeps me on tenterhooks.

We once got a glimpse what kind of mom that Nabi has. This week's it's Jaeun's mom.
Looking at those backgrounds, I'm not surprised how both of them has issues with trusts, uncertainties, toward people and relatioships.
Of course their moms love them, and sure enough, the feeling is mutual, but those are not properly (?) given or shown. Oh being a mom myself, I can go on forever with this issue, but to put it simply, those poor kids, they don't know how to love, to receive love.
They are afraid to get attached with other people.
Now I understand how Nabi seems to always thirsty with attention and Jaeun always distance himself. They don't even really have real friends.
It will be rocky and tricky, but I really hope they can somehow find ways to heal their broken hearts and souls.

Maybe this is what this drama is really trying to get at with these two characters: two people who are drawn to each other but don't understand how to give and receive love, perhaps partially because they didn't see healthy relationships modeled for them as children.

The rolling pencil is a metaphor for the drifting that the main characters indulged in in the whole episode.

Without Jae eun to ground her, Nabi floats aimlessly throughout the duration of the episode, lost. Everything is meaningless. She goes through the motions, smiles and laughs mechanically, but her heart is not in it.

Jae eun too struggles without Nabi.

They walk like ghosts but each is empty and hollow without the other.

In the last scene, the grinding wheels and the screeching brakes breaks this limbo-like, whimsical, unreal state of being, and Jae eun steps out, treading on the gravel gratingly, and deliberately, and the cocoon where Nabi has insulated herself from him and hurt and pain bursts.

He stares at her, steps into her space and her safe place.

She reacts and comes to life again.

Just rambling.

The rolling pencil could mean nothing but a tilting shelf.

Jae Eon’s coping mechanism really sucks, how he casually flirts because he can’t handle his feelings.
Anyone heard the OST ‘Love me like that’ yet? Someone pointed out in the comments it sounds like Jae Eon’s POV, is there anyone else who relates to this too?😊
I dont doubt JaeEon likes Nabi but they just aren’t for each other right now???
I mean Nabi is so insecure and fickle while Jae Eon can’t break that boundary to be clingy.
Rmb how after the police scene he momentarily tried to hold Nabi back then let go again, that’s him and how he can’t allow himself to be ‘clingy’ to anyone.
Highly doubt this series will end with anyone being with anyone, haha.

Just a thought on the butterfly too:
Isnt the butterfly actually talking about himself? How the camera always takes the shot from his back (w the butterfly) then him. You know how that tattoo is on the back of his neck, like sometimes u just forget about it cause u can’t see it?
Out of sight, out of mind, has feelings but can pretend not to know it, and goes about carrying that butterfly talk he told the girl. Then actually he’s the butterfly, fragile and needs TLC haha.

I've also begun to think that Jae Eon is actually the butterfly and not Nabi. I've also read theories on this from others. I think people begun theorizing this after that one scene where Bitna describes JE as the flowers that butterflies flutter around.

I've been rewatching episodes and what really stood out to me was the bar scene when they first met and Nabi was explaining what her name meant -- how butterflies fly away when pursued, but if you stay still, it might land on your shoulder. If JE is indeed the butterfly, then could this be a foreshadowing of the ending? JE will choose/go back to Nabi in due time? 🤷‍♀️ 🤞

@missvictrix Wow! That theory about scenery change. I learned something new.
I liked how Na Bi is gone for a day and Jae Un is left pining after her as if its already been a month. Visits the places he built memories with her and then creepily offers a stranger to show his butterflies. I mean exactly how obsessed is he with the butterflies. I have not seen even dog lovers being this keen to show their dog around (or are they?).
Bit-na was a disappointment. I like how she was playing with beanie guy as if he was a puppy. But then she goes around patting other dogs in the neighbourhood too. Ugh.
One should not start celebrating before a victory. Our Potato Boy seems to be so happy as if he has already won the war already. No Bro, you opponent just arrived.
That aunt just went ahead and normalised not a toxic relationship but infact a toxic pattern. Ugh. I rather wish healthy relationships were normalised the way toxic relationships are propogated.
I mean what does Seol-a want? I was about to appreciate her honesty (despite the wierd stuff she pulled out last episode) but then she went ahead being a tattletale.
What role is that secretary couple playing to the story? Poor 2 good looking people being used as fillers. Tsk Tsk.

a lot of people seem to think that this episode was a filler and I agree too. what i find interesting about it is that this filler was narrated by jaeon. it kind of sucks because when nabi narrates she's like all over the place and she has so much to say, but with jaeon its the opposite although i wish he had more to say though, it fits his character just right. if you rewatch it, you'll see that he observes more than he thinks or says. so in his narration, its more of what he does, where he is, what he hears rather than what he really thinks. we only get snippets of what he thinks.

i think that really reflects his character because when he hears other students talk about him or even that scene with the man misunderstanding him for having an affair with his sister, he doesn't do anything, he just listens to what they have to say and doesn't clear the air at all. even with nabi when she tried confronting him about seeing other people. like many of you said, he's really only honest with nabi. but she doesn't get that because she lets people and herself get in her head about her relationship towards him especially. and yes, their relationship is there but not really there so where in the world could she gain the confidence to even trust him right? and i get it but also because we see jaeon's side of the story every now and then, i can also see that he doesn't blatantly lie to her just to keep having sexual relations 🤷🏻‍♀️

this episode kind of verifies with jaeon that he really has feelings for nabi. he misses her at random moments—not the sex but her presence. see, if jaeon was really just into her for the sex, then he wouldn't have relived the moments where they met at the bar. he wouldn't look at her desk in the middle of class or go to her desk in hopes of finding her there. or when he clearly shows some kind of frustration when he would look at his phone and not have nabi show up on his screen. if jaeon really wanted nothing else to do with her other than be strictly physical, then she wouldn't be bothersome to him and seol ah wouldn't have felt threatened. but yes, when he faces moments of confrontation with other people like seol ah, gyu hyun and his mom, he chooses to pretend not to be aware of what he truly feels because of how sceptical he is about love and relationships. "close but not enough to get hurt" right? it's clearly just his defense mechanism that is getting in the way of him mustering up the courage to feel loved and to love someone without the fear of getting hurt. clearly as a male lead he is being portrayed really well by song kang because we all keep getting swayed by his actions!!!! love it and also hate it. haha

and with that flirting scene jaeon had with that woman in the bar he and nabi went to, i know it seems like they were gonna hook up and he was regressing back to his old ways. but i think that just shows his character too. trying to mask the way he feels and using other people as...

I think nobody's mentioned the previous episode when Jae-on overheard his classmates mocking him behind his back, The guy considers himself suave and popular, to discover his classmates considered him a creepy predator must've been a crushing blow. 'Is this how people see me?' That seemed to have started the ball rolling on his self-reflection.

i think his reaction to when the girl said she was the one who broke it off was also kind of interesting. because his smile kind of implied that her side of the story wasn't true, it seemed like she was embarrassed that he broke it off so she said that to her friend to save face. but i agree, i think that was one factor as to why he felt like he should change and then that confrontation scene with nabi just intensified that desire more. all the more, hearing from nabi that she is hearing all those things about him from someone else must've sucked for sure. especially when he said that he didnt want her to see him like that.

Required fields are marked *

I feel like that scene of him overhearing the two girls also gave us some more insight about why he is the way he is. Seems like people in the past have tended to use him for his good looks and popularity...and then perhaps they were deluded by his "friendliness" and in order to save face, would say stuff about him like that girl did (I dated him and broke it off) when in reality, she probably realized he didn't actually like her and it was all in her head. Shrug. Kind of like how that one girl at the club got that butterfly tattoo on her arm and he said she did it on her own accord and was deluded as well.

Really wondering who or what burned him so bad in the past that has made him not want to get "too" close with others. Perhaps his relationship with his mom? They don't seem to be on bad terms, but maybe because she was always traveling for work, he got burned by her and broken promises? Or maybe even his dad.

agreed! tbh i wouldn't be surprised if he saw a broken relationship between his parents. it would make sense as to why he's somewhat distant to his mom too. i would say seol ah is also kind of a factor in that provided they used to date just watches him go through the motions because she's the ex but also kind of his only bestfriend. but although many people think he just regressed again, i would say he is growing. just not at the miraculous pace most kdramas would set for male leads.

He is definitely growing, but has also regressed, which is natural. Nothing (no one) is perfect. Two steps forward and one step back. He is a work in progress, and it will take time! The question is whether Nabi is willing to help him.

I agree with this. The show never really showed PJH as a sex addict. He just answered calls which may be from his mother or Seol. It's just rumors swirling around that he's not into dating.

Yeah, he doesn't lie, but he also doesn't explain himself, which is sooo frustrating. That's why there are so many misunderstandings. Communication is key, people!!!

The bar scene with the girl was definitely his way of trying to get over Nabi and distract himself from realizing his own feelings. Guess what? It didn't work, bro!! Lol.

Some commenter in the ep.5 thread kept insisting that we were crazy for thinking JE is changing and has actual feelings for Nabi because they were going by the webtoon. I get that the webtoon is the source material, but I don't think it is right or fair to go by it page by page and expect the drama to be a direct reflection of it. Quite a few people who have read the webtoon have said that the drama's portrayal of JE is much less cold and has shown more emotion than webtoon JE. Script writers and directors have to make changes so that it appeals to the general public and adapt the story so that it fits the format/media (dramas/tv).

i don't know if jaeon lets them create false perceptions of him and chooses not to defend himself because it would seem like that would create more rumours, or if it's because in the inside he knows its not true and knows he doesn't need to prove himself to anyone :/ i can't tell HAHA but the scene i've hated the most so far was when they all went out for drinks and his mates were gossiping about a couple having sex in the campus and they all just looked at him HE COULD HEAR EVERYTHING???? so insensitive smh. but that being said, the only person i've seen him at least TrY to explain things to is nabi.

true. a lot of people have been critical in comparing the webtoon to the live drama but i think its important to know that not all people who watch kdramas would read book/webtoon versions of stuff that is aired on tv. considering that they also had to condense the webtoon to 16, 1hr episodes—there for sure would be plot changes and character differences. i'm not sure exactly but i don't think the true beauty drama was the exact same as the webtoon either? live production doesn't always equate to word-for-word presentation. it also depends on the demographic that would watch the show... some might read and watch but others might not even know the webtoon :/ it's just all in appeal. if they created the drama exactly as the webtoon then it would catch a niche audience–those who have read the webtoon.

Yeah, I am not sure either. He seems to not care what others think of him...even if it means people start rumors about him, which is a problem. He does know people talk shit about him...he even said so about that creepy sunbae who was making those sexual comments towards Nabi.

lol yess that scene was funny but also like way to be obvious?????

In the scene where Nabi breaks up with him, it seemed like he was going to maybe must up the courage to explain himself or tell her how he really feels, but once Nabi started going off on him more, all his resolve vanished and he seemed defeated...like "this is happening again so why do I even bother explaining because she is not going to believe me either way." He really seemed hurt and kind of seemed like he thought Nabi had understood him or would have understood him and his intentions more.

Agreed about adaptations. The have to cut stuff out otherwise it won't fit in 10 episodes (or however many). I didn't read True Beauty, but my friend did and she said there were definitely differences (in the webtoon, Selena is the main lead's sister). Also, TB was (is?) still ongoing. And I think the male lead/ships have changed. PLUS, I am sure people who read the Nevertheless webtoon were first intrigued by it because they wanted to see whether or not the male lead would change and get together with the female lead...and then got duped in the end lol. I would have been pissed hahah

I think I might be the only one who thinks this drama is just getting better and better with each episode. It's doing a lot of interesting things and showing how relationships aren't always straightforward especially when you have people involved that have a lot of baggage. Yes, dramas often show characters "healing" as they grow closer to each other but rarely do we see two characters that are young, hurt each other, and yet are still drawn to each other. I don't know if that's a "toxic" relationship but rather, it's showing us some mistakes that people make on their way to trying to find themselves and to find love (romantic, familial, platonic love, whatever it is).

Jae-eon and Na-bi are both young, don't know how to deal with their intense feelings for each other, and are both afraid of getting hurt (and in Jae-eon's case, afraid of hurting others).

Jae-eon wants to be loved and one way he does this is by sleeping around, like he did with the woman in the bar. It allows him to get validation and to feel desired without him getting hurt, like he might if he entered into a real relationship.

On a side note, I really truly doubt that Potato Boy is a stalker or is bad. He is just a sincere person. I hope that this drama leaves him as he is and Na-bi will have to hurt him in the end to get what she wants, as I think that is the character arc they are trying to do with her. I don't think she reciprocates his feelings and yet, she was momentarily jealous. Na-bi, just like Jae-eon, craves loves and she can see (whether she is conscious of it or not) that Do-hyuk cares for her, so she wants him to keep loving her, not some other girl.

I hope that this show doesn't make her "lead" him on. He should tell her his feelings clearly and I hope she is clear with him that she doesn't reciprocate his feelings. He doesn't own her and her feelings. I don't like it when we get "second lead syndrome." Na-bi doesn't need to reciprocate his feelings and just because she doesn't, doesn't make her a bad person. She is allowed to have her own feelings and to not want Do-hyuk. However, if Na-bi leads him on after he tells her how she feels, then that will cruel to him. I won't get too mad at the show if she does this though. Na-bi clearly has her own relationship issues and I think we are seeing that she can hurt others too.

All I'm saying is there are no heroes or villains (or crazy stalkers) in this drama. Just young people making mistakes and learning about themselves in the process. Seems like they might need to eat some more bugs and poop before they get the honey :)

agreed!!! this is probably the most accurate depiction of adolescent relationships that i've seen so far. although some aspects of it are exaggerated for cinematic and plot purposes, the core of it is very human. and i think that's what really frustrates people here. we can see ourselves in them and sometimes, the choices we wouldn't want our leads to make are the choices we as regular people make. lol

I'm wondering if this episode marks a complete turn around - a reversal that is also a departure from the webtoon. I haven't read it, but from what others have said, Jae-un goes back to the girlfriend from his school days, yet in the drama, it's Nabi who is doing that. What if Jae-un is the one who becomes so jealous, he wrecks Na-bi's relationship with DH, instead of the other way round?? What if Na-bi then turns the tables on Jae-un, goes back to him, and then cold-heartedly dumps him? Perhaps that's now why we are finally getting Jae-un's voiceover so that we can have an insight into his insecurities.

I have to say I just adore Do Hyeok. I don't find him boring at all! But I don't think he's the complement in a partner that NaBi needs. I feel like Do Hyeok is all sweetness and sincerity, but so is NaBi, although slightly more timid than Do Hyeok it seems.

When we saw JaeEun with NaBi alone many times in NaBi's apartment, JaeEun was also sweet and sincere, but JaeEun is much more assertive in pursuit. JaeEun just finds it very difficult to get too close, or even reveal to anyone (friends, classmates, et al.) if he's very close to someone.

There's a reason we've seen very, very little of JaeEun's living / work space up until now, and we've seen sooooo much of NaBi's living space / work space. JaeEun is finally letting NaBi in though, opening the door to himself slightly by showing her / sharing his work space and where he lives, if not the actual living space. I think that's why Seol-a felt threatened. Clearly, Seol-a knew where JaeEun lived / worked. Now NaBi does, too.

Here's hoping NaBi and JaeEun can get past their neuroses and meet somewhere in the middle. Very much looking forward to Ep. 7. ❤️
