Premiere Watch: Dal-li and Gamjatang, Hometown

Have you survived the deluge of new weekend shows? Well, now it’s time for the mid-week drop! We have a silly rom-com and a mystery-thriller headed our way, and they seem like they might be a good pairing: one to scare you, and another to calm you down and make you laugh.

Dal-li and Gamjatang

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Rom-com
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This drama’s poster game is on point, and I’ve been loving how they play with the story’s art museum themes. Opposites-attract stories are no stranger to dramaland, and it looks like Dal-li and Gamjatang is about to go all-in with their version of this, with nouveau riche Kim Min-jae and ditzy chaebol Park Kyu-young. Is mayhem on the way? It seems like it. But if that mayhem veers towards hilarious and madcap (as opposed to train wreck), I think we’ll be in for a treat. I could sure use a drama with the right level of ridiculous humor right now.

Hometown

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Thriller, mystery, horror
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: My first thought whenever I hear about Hometown is how great the cast is — Han Ye-ri and Uhm Tae-gu return to dramaland playing siblings (yesss!), and Yoo Jae-myung is guaranteed to add gravitas wherever he goes. The story itself looks to be 10/10 on the mystery and thrills that it promises, with things like terrorism, kidnapping, and deeper psychological themes in the mix. With promos that feature nightmares and night sweats and a general feeling of creepiness, this might not be your next nightcap drama.

Definitely going to watch Hometown. The cast is top notch.

The posters for Dal-li and Gamjatang were neat but the teasers turned me off. I'll give it a try, but I don't know if I can get past Park Kyu-young's unfortunate hair. I'm shallow like that.

I will try both of them.

Hometown's casting is top notch!

Not sure about Dal-li and Gamjatang's plot but it can be fun. Her dress suits pretty well the poster's ton with impressionist painting.

I for one like Dal Ri and her hair along with her fashion. It fits her chick elegant character description and makes her unique from most drama females with their boring same hair and style.

Plus it will be really refreshing to have a beautiful genuinely kind and intelligent rich women who is the FL… How often does that happen?

I think that you make a very good point about the hair. I will be watching.

I too love her hair. After watching episode 1, her hair makeup costume team deserves a raise. She looks gorgeous! The male lead's style isn't shabby either.

Her styling is indeed different but I found the effect stunning- it emphasizes her fine facial features in way that the more usual K-drama actress hair style could never do. Her clothing is also remarkably appropriate to her character: You would expect that someone from the art world who is named for Salvador Dali to dress differently- and even a bit eccentrically- and that is exactly what the costume folks are doing.

All of this is encouraging. When a drama goes to this kind of trouble over the details it often speaks volumes about the care being taken to produce a fine show.

DALI a will be available on Kocowa and Viki US.

I have been requesting HOMETOWN on Viki for quite awhile and it appears at this point that Viki will not be licensing it.
Unless OnDemandKorea picks it up as a rare current kdrama it subs in English I have doubts that it will be available on a legal site.

It's on ODK but I think it requires premium subscription to watch it with Eng sub :(

(I have the ODK premium subscription and am lucky to watch one or two subbed dramas a year on it. That complaint is for another place.)

I just checked and HOMETOWN’s episode one is available on ODK but not subbed (yet, I hope!)
There is usually a delay for english subs to appear if they appear.

O/T. As of today on ODK the most recent ‘new’ kdrama being subbed in english is HIGH CLASS.

Note that Viki has re-named it DALI AND COCKY PRINCE.

I'm definitely watching both dramas. Derek Hyun ( Dont know his real name) is a delight to watch; and the entire cast of hometown, I've waited to see them on screen. Han Ye Ri sporting longer hair, that's new.

I’ve been really excited for Hometown for a while now. The casting is top-tier and I’ve never seen these actors give a bad performance - even in less than stellar projects. I’m also happy to see its only 12 episodes - less chances for the story to meander and become unfocused.

I hope Dal-li and Gamjatang sticks to it’s lighthearted, comedic tone. If the writing is strong, that could be a worthwhile watch. Even if Park Gyu-young’s hair is horrendous.

D&G has that bright (very digital and light drenched) visuals typical of current C- Dramas.

I want to watch Hometown but the legitimate site that shows it (OnDemandKorea) doesn't seem to have English subs. Maybe I'll wait a bit more and see if they will add them.

Sometimes K-dramas will include inside jokes or cultural references in the names chosen for characters or places. For instance the male lead in NAE-IL'S CANTABILE, whose ambition is to become a Conductor, was given the name Yoo-jin- as in the given name of the great Eugene Ormondy- and in fact many of his mannerisms, and even sense of humor were modelled on that great conductor.

So, here our female lead is apparently named Dali. I wonder if this was by accident or is this yet another example of the same phenomenon? (Although I have also seen her name rendered as Dal-ri- so maybe this is just a coincidence).

In any case I fully plan on watching DALI AND GAMJATANG which Viki has chosen to re-name the show DALI AND COCKY PRINCE.

Dali mentioned her father named her for Salvador Dali :)

I have now seen the first episode and saw that Dali did indeed draw the connection between her name and Salvador Dali.
