Sageuk-comedy Secret Royal Inspector and Joy releases new teaser featuring Taecyeon

tvN’s 15th anniversary is coming, and with it a sageuk-comedy drama that stars Taecyeon (Vincenzo, The Game: Towards Zero) and Kim Hye-yoon (Extraordinary You). Known as Secret Royal Inspector and Joy (formerly Tale of the Secret Royal Investigator and Jo-yi), the drama is about the unique partnership between a secret royal inspector who doesn’t want to uphold his royal mandate, and a Joseon dynasty divorcée who bulldozes through social norms.

Taecyeon’s character is a civil servant who is a strong defender of lunch hours and leaving work on time. With sudden disappearance being a frequent job hazard, and gambling one’s life being a daily occurrence, it’s no wonder Taecyeon doesn’t want to accept his dangerous career path. Although he seems like a run-of-the-mill civil servant, he’s actually an elite who placed first in the national civil service exams.

Kim Hye-yoon plays the part of Joy, a woman who is deemed scandalous after choosing to divorce her husband to pursue her own happiness. After she meets Taecyeon, she begins to spread her wings as an inspector.

In the teaser, Taecyeon receives his appointment as secret royal inspector in the middle of the night. His face falls as he reads the royal mandate.

As he recalls his predecessors, we see flashbacks of their untimely demises as he narrates: “Correspondence from the first one was lost” (we see him being tortured), and “I heard the second went into hiding” (we see a dead body with a secret royal inspector token carelessly thrown in a warehouse). Taec tears up as he continues, “The last inspector is in a state of disappearance” (we see a grizzly bear chewing on something).

Taec wonders aloud, “Why me?!” while the onscreen copy reads: “Crazy Investigative Show.” The teaser ends with Taec and his two friends looking defeated at their next assignment.

Directed by Yoo Jong-sun (Designated Survivor: 60 Days, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim) and written by Lee Jae-yoon (Handsome Guy and Jung-eum), tvN’s anniversary drama Secret Royal Inspector and Joy will begin airing in November.

actor Taecyeon... it's not that I hate him... but since I met him in dream high... I just couldn't like him or relate to him.
Could it be his acting skills have improved? Would I like him someday???
Anyway, it won't be with this drama. The plot is not interesting for my taste. 😖😖😖😖

Reading this while still enjoying Hometown Cha3x exacerbated an already growing pet peeve: dramaland's cheat about "everyman." Is it just me or are kdramas (as a reflection of SK society) really uncomfortable about romances with genuine everymen? It is simply not enough for Dusik to be kind, generous, upright, he has to be a wunderkind in hiding. Tacyeon may lack ambition and is apparently happy to toil (9-5) in obscurity, BUT is really an ace scholar who could be dazzling if he wanted to be. I may be wrong but I cannot think of a single rom com or romantic melo with a ML character who is a fine person but truly average in other respects. I should add, of course, this applies to only the really good looking guys. It seems perfectly alright to labor in the trenches, without having any unappreciated genius, if the character happens to look more like Song Kang-ho (no diss intended) but such characters are rarely the focal point of romantic storylines.

You’re more likely to find handsome Everyman characters in weekend family dramas.

That does not surprise me. I do not watch them, but my impression, like my limited awareness of American soaps and Mexican telenovelas, is that the sheer number of episodes allows stealthy reflection of changing social mores, which do not get much critical scrutiny but plenty of eyeballs.

Yes, but then you'll have to rely on strong writing (e.g. development of a everyday hero into the actual hero through their inner and outer journey) instead of a ready-made meal aka trope (e.g. genius in hiding.) Unfortunately, the good writing in K-drama is ...just... not always there. I feel your pain - I wish there were a lot more relatable and original characters in kdrama, but again they are few in-between.

I recommend 'You Raise Me Up' as it has a proper average/below average (still good looking but an "everyman" in every other respect) ML. It's actually a meaningful drama unfairly misunderstood because people are put off by the synopsis. Do watch if you haven't already.

Ever since I saw Taec in Wonderful Days as a slightly dim bulb of a dad being out classed by his precocious daughter, I’ve enjoyed his work - in the few dramas I’ve seen him in. Which I think puts me in a tiny minority here.

Will I be staring at his (and her) ears the entire drama and be too distracted to pay attention to plot, acting and cinematography? Yes. Will I still love it. YES!

Merlin-Arthur bickering was pretty fun! But I didn't really like the end of the serie.

MERLIN!!!! Yes. The real meaning of ears. Hahahaha
I loved watching Merlin /Arthur banter every Saturday. Ah, the humour in that series was right up my street…

Both Taecyeon and Junho on my screen so soon! I’m happy for all the content as both a sageuk and 2PM fan.

I really hope this sticks to its comedic tone and is just a fun, lighthearted drama (I want my melodrama dose from Red Sleeve Cuff). I’m mostly really excited to see Kim Hye-yoon again, she’s an absolute delight to watch.

I'm not crazy about Taecyeon's acting but I think definitely light comedic role fits him better.
I don't know why he always played roles that are complicated, dark, having a problem with parents, or with some kind of special skill...
I think he is genuinely a nice guy (like Three Meals a Day) so he should play a nice cheerful regular guy for once...
