[2021 Year in Review] Part 1: The Bean Count

It’s time for the yearly Bean Count! For those new to this Dramabeans tradition, Bean Count is a nerdy way of looking back at your year in dramas and giving the shows you loved more love by stealing re-appropriating the attention you gave to other shows.
Here’s how to do your own Bean Count:
1. Get your total beans by counting all the 2021 shows you watched in their entirety. One finished show = one bean. (If it’s a currently airing show that you’re up-to-date on, it also counts as one bean.)
2. Now that you have your total beans, redistribute them among your finished/current shows using whatever rule makes sense to you. You can give each show one bean back, or give all your beans to one show, or somewhere between those extremes.
NOTE: This year’s list of shows includes dramas that aired after November 27, 2020 until November 27 this year. We’ll add a list of the shows at the bottom of the post. If we missed some, feel free to count them in your list.
Check out how the DB minions did their Bean Counts below. Click on the buttons to sort shows by number of beans or airing date. Click on the minion names at the bottom of the table to see how each minion distributed their beans.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I get partial beans for dropping a show?
Nope. No bean for you. You must have watched all the available episodes for it to count as one bean.2. What if I fast-forwarded a show to finish it?
mary thinks it’s cheating to count it as one bean, but mary is just jealous because people have more beans than her every yearWe don’t judge people since this is supposed to be a fun tradition. 🙂 If that’s how you watch dramas and it counts as finished in your book, sure, count it as one.3. What if I watched a very long show? Shouldn’t it count as a jar of beans?
Sorry. That’s still only one bean. This rule was set in stone when the Bean Count laws were formed. Changing it will anger The Ghost of Bean Count Past.4. Can I give negative beans to some shows, and give even more beans to another show?
Since one finished show = one bean, you can get a negative bean by un-watching a sho–just kidding! Nope. You can’t award negative beans. You can, however, take comfort in the fact that you stole that show’s one bean and gave it to something else.

Wow it's that time of the year already?!!!
Idk but i feel like I actually missed out on so many dramas i was looking forward to (mainly the legal/thriller/mystery not because it doesn't seem interesting but because I really don't have the energy to go through something heavy) but turns out- I really had watched a whopping 22 dramas this year (that's more than i've ever watched in a year since 2011). I think with the streaming services creating original dramas left and rigbt the drama supply this year was so intense so i feel like I missed out on so much.
So here we go I have 22 and I'm gonna be giving it to...

WO-HO! 22 beans! It was an interesting year. Many very different stories. Some unespected surprises... some big delusions too.

Wow, it's already that time of the year. As my company continued the work from home policy, I thought I could finish more than 30 dramas. But as it turned out, working from home actually made me spend more time on work. That said, I managed to score 21 Beans for 2021!!
As a hardcore sageuk fan, I have been spoilt silly this year. The Red Sleeve Cuffs tops my list because of the wonderful story, directing and casting. I've said this before & will say it again: Kudos to Junho & Lee Se-young. They have successfully breathed charm and beauty into the characters. Many fans think a sad ending is inevitable for this drama based on history. But, I'd like to think their ending was a happy one - they met, fell in love, got married and made each other happy during the times they were together.
Mr Queen was absolute fun and I'm happy that Secret Inspector & Joy is giving me the same happy vibe. Gender-bender plot had always intrigued me and Park Eun-bin has definitely raised the bar in The King's Affection.

I started a number of other ones on the list (including highly rated ones by others here) and just...couldn't make myself finish them. So the ones here were enough to keep my interest. But of those...the three standouts were Move to Heaven (I had to watch in small doses because it was intense), The Great Shaman Ga Doo Shim (now that is a school story done right, plus Nam Da Reum, such a great actor at any age, and finally the LEAD, yay!), and Happiness. Frankly, Happiness deserved a lot more buzz than it got. It was super tightly written and the acting of every character was dead-on. What I loved about it (despite not liking horror/zombies in general) was that it was a story about people and what ultimately matters most when you are forced to decide what your true priorities are. It had a lot of resonance for everyone who has gone through the pandemic (which is literally everyone); that lent quite a bit of reality to the scenario. And it left you with a warm feeling, both about the characters and about the people around you in real life. I highly recommend it!

It's been a slow year for me on the K-drama front. I completed (about to complete) 14 titles out of this year's releases. My favorites have been Jirisan and Youth of May. I did complete a few more that I wishlisted from previous years, but they don't get beans this year.
