Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 20-26, 2021

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas! The holidays most likely affected this week’s ratings, as many shows had low numbers. Even so, Moonshine — which replaced The King’s Affection — premiered to a decent 7.5 percent. The Red Sleeve Cuff also stayed strong, even reaching a new high. The power of sageuks!

Interestingly, after Snowdrop‘s controversy resurfaced, the creators decided to air three episodes over the weekend, in hopes it would clear things up. The drama’s numbers saw a significant drop, which, again, might be because of the holidays. We’ll have to wait and see how next week’s episodes perform to confirm.

MOONSHINE is off to a good start.

YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN continues to perform well- It is a much better Weekender than its predecessor.

But I am a little surprised by the low numbers for SCHOOL 2021. Perhaps the SCHOOL franchise no longer appeals? Or is this particular version just not as good?

To be frank, School 2021 is quite the snooze fest. Full of tropes and rehashed plots from previous schools (tortured bromance) but without any noteworthy performances. Both second leads are ironically more interesting than the mains, although they are still fairly typical characters. But the show is beautifully filmed (so much gorgeous autumn scenery) and makes for decent viewing if you are bored enough or just need something light to relax.

RLC has very high ratings! So SK viewers love what they have been shown in the show. Any thoughts on this? @smaltwalt @ramenqueen

I am sorry controversy aside Snowdrop is nothing to write home about. For all the hype, its underwhelming. Bulgasal is doing well but it needs to edit better, this week specifically. I love Our Beloved Summer, The One and Only.

I don't watch the Red Sleeve, and I don't follow KPop, but the rating is really close to the promise of Junho dancing in king robe, and I'm really looking forward to it! :D

Snowdrop has been an amazing drama so far just don't understand why its rating is so low only becz one controversy and people don't want to see it just watch it neatly it's good the acting especially. This is sad it's judged before even not completely it's shown. Don't judge a book by it cover

Not sure for whose sake you decided to put this comment here, but only Korean viewers can affect the ratings and they simply do not want to watch it. The ONE controversy you talk about is not about any particular person or anything but about the entire story which plays with their history, which is enough for them to boycott the drama. Also, not sure what you mean by "don't judge a book by its cover" here, but they did wait since march till the premiere week and the drama did exactly what they said it would. They waited again till ep 5 since jtbc said they would clarify everything, but it turned out to be even worse than what people expected, especially ep5. You cannot ask them to wait and watch anymore when more than 1/4th of the drama is over. Which is why they aren't watching anymore since they can't seem to do any more than that. I mean, you have to recognize that there is a problem here when hardly anyone is watching it there. Look for you, it may be entertainment but they are real people with real feelings and it is their history. So they are allowed to feel hurt by it. That being said, if you are enjoying the show, you are allowed to, just do not expect everyone else to as well.

nicely said. i honestly feel for the koreans and the fact that so many international viewers are enjoying it naively without understanding the context really rubs me the wrong way.

I thought jtbc promised to air 3 episodes of Snowdrop this week! And would you please complete the drama list on this page and add the ratings for the missing dramas: Taejong Yi Bang Won, Show window and Uncle! Their ratings are higher than many of the dramas included!

Since it is one of the four sageuks I am currently live watching and the only one not being covered in this Ratings Report, here are the Nielsen Nationwide ratings for the first six episodes of KBS’s 32 episode S/S sageuk THE KING OF TEARS, LEE BANGWON (from DramaWiki): 8.7%, 9.4%, 8.8%, 9.2%, 8.7% and 6.7%.

I sort of understand DB doesn't cover all the cable network like MBN but I don't understand why THE KING OF TEARS, LEE BANGWON is not covered.
It's KBS and the other KBS weekend drama Young Lady and Gentleman is there.
What is the policy...?

KBS sure spent so much money to make LEE BANGWON but it looks cheap (like they filmed in the set) and looks like an old-fashioned sageuk in 2000s compared to The Red Sleeve...

Probably they did on purpose to appeal older generations...

@ayalynn123,
Sometimes it is not possible to figure out why things are as they are here. In the past when a drama I am watching has not been covered in the Ratings Report I just post them myself in a comment like above.

I am actually enjoying LEE BANGWON. I agree with you that it has a look of older sageuks (not that I have watched that many) in particular there are a lot of close-ups. I personally would not call the look of the drama cheap. It is scheduled for 32 episodes which is almost double the length of today’s dramas some of which are even coming in with 12 episodes or less. I am sure there are budget constraints. For a sageuk like this a very important aspect I would think is getting the history correct/accurate. I hope the director and writer are up for the long haul. As far as I can tell so far all the leads are doing fine. Just my opinion of course.

Oh you are right, cheap is not the right word.
But to me, it seems like they spent a lot of money on extras or shot from above (wide shot) than regular scenes.
It's not the style I like, but their tactics seems successful.
Because I think they did it on purpose to get viewers like older generations and men who don't usually watch dramas on weekend time slot (around 10pm).

I actually like the idea of not having kpop idols or young buzzworthy actors. And I really appreciate they are making serious sageuk and 32 episodes.
I am watching The Red Sleeve and also making Japanese subtitle on Viki for it, too bad, I really don't have time to watch serious sageuk right now...
