Premiere Watch: Through the Darkness, Dr. Park’s Clinic

January is looking like a quiet month for premieres (before the February drama-tsunami hits). That being said, we’ve got two completely different shows hitting the airwaves this weekend: a probing thriller about Korea’s first criminal profiler, and a wacky comedy featuring some of the greats.

Through the Darkness

Time slot: Friday-Saturday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Crime, thriller
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m not a huge fan of serial killer storylines, police procedurals, thrillers, or any hybrid thereof, but that’s not to say Through the Darkness doesn’t have a lot to recommend it. Based on the real-life chronicle of Korea’s first-ever criminal profiler, the drama tells the story of his genesis. Or, what it was like for him to “walk into the devil’s heart.” Sounds like a one-way trip, to me! Kim Nam-gil plays the lead, and he’s supported by Jin Seon-gyu, Kim So-jin, Ryeoun, and more. The drama is also set in the 1990s, covers real cases of the time, and showcases how criminal investigations changed during that time. If I’m correct, the drama will be a great combo of thrills and probing psychological depth.

Dr. Park’s Clinic

Time slot: Friday
Broadcaster: TVING
Genre: Comedy, medical
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Based off a webtoon by the same name, Lee Seo-jin and Ra Mi-ran plays husband and wife in this hilarious-looking “medical” drama. Lee Seo-jin is the eponymous Dr. Park, who’s got serious problems including hair loss, the struggle to keep his newly opened medical clinic afloat, and a wife that trusts the TV over her own husband for medical advice. While I’m curious how the drama will perform, being a TVING original that features a more mature cast, I also have high expectations for the comedy and satire this drama will deliver. I can already anticipate the laughs.

Will definitely be checking out both! For once, I’m not swamped by a dozen ongoing dramas so that might actually happen on time. I mean, just look at those actors! I’m expecting some great acting, no matter the quality of the scripts (although I’m obviously hoping both shows are good in that aspect too).

I'll try Through the Darkness, but it is Dr. Park's Clinic that I'm really looking forward to. It looks hilarious with Lee Seo-jin playing against type.

On Demand Korea. I briefly had a premium subscription when PEGASUS MARKET was airing.

The streaming service OnDemandKorea.
I just checked and so far episode one is not available subbed in english.

O/T. I have been a premium subscriber to ODK for a couple of years now and it is disappointing how few current dramas get subbed in
english there. I believe the most recent dramas (which I have note watched) are WORK LATER, DRINK NOW, HIGH CLASS and BIRTHCARE CENTER.
On the other hand in the past I was able to watch CONFESSION and THE GOOD DETECTIVE at ODK.

Also TTD will be available on Kocowa which sometimes is more timely with subs than Viki (should Viki be subbing this and not taking the subs from Kocowa).

My instincts are telling me THROUGH THE DARKNESS is going to be great. I am looking forward to my first Kim Nam-gil drama but I don’t expect any KNG smiles.
I am hoping this is the first of many excellent cops/crime/mystery dramas in 2022. I am hoping that this year we get to view THE GOOD DETECTIVE 2 and MISSING: THE OTHER SIDE 2.

Gonna check out Kim Nam-gil's new drama. Last time I saw him was in the silly and fun The Fiery Priest. He can act in either serious and comedic roles so I'm excited to see him again.

Tell me you watched Live Up to Your Name?! He was crackling there, and his chemistry with Kim Ah Joong was sparkling.

Oh both of them sound interesting! I'm hoping at least one of them (if we're lucky, then both) ended up great🤞
I want to earn my first bean!

Since the second half of 2021, there were quite a few buzzworthy/big budget/big star dramas, but most of them were disappointing or just okay (at least for me)
I really hope this Kim Nam-gil's drama is not going to be one of them.
Please be great!

"...and a wife that trusts the TV over her own husband for medical advice."

Very, very timely.

Korean serial killer dramas are genarally great. Movies especially, but series can be just as good. So, yeah I'm stoked that this is Kim Nam-gil's comeback (?) drama. Also it's interesting that it's about SK's first profiler.

Will be watching Through the Darkness, and definitely angsting for legal subbed broadcast for Dr. Park's Clinic (and Tracer too!); the cast guested in Na PD's Game Caterer youtube channel, and if the way they play off each other is an example of how they work in the drama, I really wanna watch!

Not available on Viki, but on Kocowa/On Demand Korea. Groans. Seems like Viki's been slipping lately.

The more Kim Nam Gil, the better :) Korean Mindhunter, anyone? 12 episodes as well. SBS has been doing a good job with playing around w/ the 19 rating, I think it works well w/ their action/thriller shows the best.
