Sohn Ye-jin, Jeon Mi-do, and Kim Ji-hyun turn Thirty-Nine together in new promos

We seem to be swimming in promos these days and JTBC’s upcoming Thirty-Nine is no exception — the drama has steadily released new posters, stills, and a video teaser over the last week.

In a story about life, friendship, and love, Thirty-Nine stars Sohn Ye-jin (Crash Landng on You), Jeon Mi-do (Hospital Playlist 2), and Kim Ji-hyun (Artificial City) as three best friends who battled through their twenties and thirties at each others’ sides. At age 39, they’re now heading towards their forties together as well, and they prepare to face a new chapter in their lives.

In the new promos, we also get our first look at the men in drama: Sohn’s colleague and fellow dermatologist Yeon Woo-jin (Undercover), talent agency CEO Lee Moo-saeng (The Silent Sea), and restaurant owner Lee Tae-hwan (Secret Royal Investigator).

The teaser begins with a montage of the three friends spending time together and having fun. Sohn announces her intentions to go abroad and Jeon doesn’t take the news well. After raging at Sohn Ye-jin and a student at work, Jeon Mi-do meets with Lee Moo-saeng and firmly turns him down. The three women then reconvene at a restaurant, where they stare with interest at Lee Tae-hwan. Kim orders a drink and becomes so tipsy that she mistakenly tries to pay with a keycard instead of her credit card.

The teaser then cuts to Jeon Mi-do and Kim Ji-hyun getting excited about Sohn Ye-jin’s romance with Yeon Woo-jin, and Sohn chases after them when they steal her phone. We see Yeon drunkenly confessing his feelings to Sohn Ye-jin and the two have a cute date playing video games. The teaser comes to a close as we jump back to the three best friends having a night in, and they play rock-paper-scissors to decide who pays for the food.

Written by Yoo Young-ah (Boyfriend) and directed by PD Kim Sang-ho (Run On), JTBC’s Thirty-Nine premieres February 16.

Damn, this one seems so tailored to my tastes that it feel downright manipulative...

This drama was made specifically for me. I refuse to even contemplate it not being perfect.

@ladynightshade: I look so forward to us discussing and kvetching about it if it /spits (a bit!) in horror to ward evil thoughts/ ends up being a disappointment.

Also, hello to my recently discovered fave Yeon Woojin. Please resist the hairstyle they have given you in future if you can! It is not flattering to your adorably handsome face. I can write a mini thesis about some if the shocking hairdos for dudes in KD and I have only been watching for 8 months. What horror stories the rest if you must have?😂😭🥰

Hairdo horrors? Oh you have no idea 😬. Over the years, I’ve seen stuff that were nightmare inducing. It should be a crime to ruin these beautiful faces with such abominable wigs and haircuts. I don’t get what these makeup/hairstyling teams were smoking.

Maybe in the future, we can warn you in advance to look out for these abominations to man when you decide to watch a classic? A little warning could be helpful 😂.

As for Yeon Woo-jin: ….look how they massacred my boy.

@ladynightshade: You make me laugh so often I have to put you on a retainer! Thank you for this.
And, haha. Please, please do warn me! And glad we are two of the members of his admiration society. I loved him in Queen of 7 Days. I foolishly wanted San to be as kind, sensitive and reflective as Yeo Woonjin’s character but alas.

1

@dncingemma: Queen of 7 Days was a masterpiece in every sense of the word, while Red Sleeve Cuff was only one…in some senses. IMO the writer really wanted to portray San as this cruel, callous man indifferent to the woman he claims to love because they thought it’d be more “realistic” given the time-period. But forgot that historical records show that the man was actually very much sensitive and caring towards Deok-im. And that they marketed their own show as a romance. If only they had actually stuck to the known, recorded history. And cut down on the ten million unnecessary side plots.

This was a completely inappropriate place to dump my feelings on an unrelated drama but I swear to god, Red Sleeve Cuff does things to me. That writer WISHES she could’ve pulled off a Queen of 7 Days.

As for the bad hair content warning, I’ll make sure to keep that in mind 😂.

@ladynightshade: You can always critique TRS with me as I feel the same as you. It got under my skin, and made me, sad, mad and frustrated but I also loved some of it. Damn Junho for being so outstanding!

2

@ladynightshade and @dncingemma I'm joining the YWJ fan chant here a little late. He is an underrated gem who has a unique charm not many can see. And also as much as I don't want to rant about TRS anymore, I totally agree that SDQ was a tragic historical done so well that TRS pales in comparison in many aspects.

Yeon Woojin has been a long time fav of mine too! I even suffered through 'Introverted Boss' for him - and that's saying a lot! 😂

@unatuna: I am currently suffering through ‘Introverted Boss’ so you have my sympathy and empathy. There is something really special about him.

1

God just when I thought I had wiped that show from memory. The things we do for Yeon Woo-jin 😔

2

Y’all just had to go ahead and remind me of that atrocity, didn’t you? Here I thought I could go the rest of my life without remembering it…

@dncingemma, you have my deepest condolences for the torture you are enduring. There is light (other Yeon Woo-jin dramas) after the darkness. Fighting!

1

@dncingemma, Oh for sure. I can’t wait for all the spirited discussions and inevitable discourse. But for now, I’ll just pretend this is going to be the most perfect-est drama ever made. Son Ye-jin, Jeon Mi-do, and Kim Ji-hyun (not to mention Yeon Woo-jin and Lee Moo-saeng!). What could possibly go wrong? Nothing. Absolutely nothing 😤.

I’ll manifest it. Please do me this one favour, drama gods.

I so want this to be good but the writer makes me wary. I'm not too happy with jtbc right now, but I do love that they are giving us so many female-centric dramas.

100%. I'm so wary of the writer too. It wasn't that Boyfriend was written badly, it was just boring. And considering that many slice-of-life dramas hinge on day-to-day occurrences, one needs especially to be creative with dialogue/situations to make them both realistic and entertaining. As for jtbc, they gave us Human Disqualification recently, so I'm not giving up just yet.

The premise and the trailer re-affirms my expectation that this will be a well received show. It was recently announced that it will be on Netflix which makes this SYJ third series in a row on Netflix. Be prepared for surge of Netflix marketing.

Will it be one of those "upset-of-the-year" dramas in my viewing history? (e.i. high expectations, low pay-off.) This drama is totally up my alley - camaraderie, the fantastic actresses, the emotionally-poignant travails of 30-something women. Oh yeah, sign me up. But is it just me or the trailer looks kinda...boring? None of the dialogue is funny in "funny" scenes, there's hardly any premise beside slice-of-life female camaraderie, and if "I'm-going-abroad" is a pinnacle of a "hook" they chose to feature in the trailer, then it's a bit underwhelming. We shall see.

This seems like such great fun and I'm loving this cast - I'll definitely be tuning in.

(p.s. Seeing Lee Tae-hwan and Yeon Woo-jin standing together in the group cast photo makes me think how easily the could pull off pretending to be brothers XD)

such a solid cast! I can just enjoying their acting alone but I do hope the writer and director won't let me down. I wanna see another 'Be melodramatic' or 'Age of Youth' vibes because I think it's a hidden card of JTBC. They always make a serie with woman centric the best. Just cup of my tea!

I'm really happy seeing SYJ working with JMD.

Today was the last day of filming. The production crew sprinted to get the filming done three weeks early; bouncing between locations in Paju and Incheon, nonstop. The second trailer dropped today. It seems a little more campy and cute.

aside from kim ji hyun that i’m not familiar with, i love the other 5 actors, so i’m sure i’ll be keeping tab on the news of this show. But i’ll be waiting for beanies’ review before watching it, that’s how much i love the cast that I want to protect them staying in the good side of my memory of drama watching years haha..
*whispering: but still, please be good show, coz I want to watch my faves, ok? ok. thanks!

Does anybody think of Be Melodramatic with a slower pace and much more beautifully shot (instead of nonsensical ones and abrupt cuts) with these teasers... because I do and it's great because Be Melodramatic still is my fav oddball romcom ever
