Reading faces (and minds?) in Dr. Frost’s animated and live-action teasers

Ooh, OCN’s upcoming Dr. Frost keeps looking better and better. While the setup is pure procedural—geeeenius psychoanalyst reads people’s behaviors and helps solve cases—the execution looks quite interesting, with a different angle than your straight-up crime investigation show.

Based on a popular webtoon, Dr. Frost stars Song Chang-eui as a psychoanalyst who suffered a brain injury, the upside of which is that he’s able to read the most minute details into people’s facial expressions (a handy skill), and the downside of which is that he cannot feel regular human emotions (probably a bad thing?). While we joke that many a dramaland hero is an emotionless robot until he’s cured by the love of a good woman, in this case he actually is emotionless in a clinical sense, and that makes him fascinating. Also, that frosty platinum ‘do on Song Chang-eui doesn’t hurt; I wouldn’t have guessed he could wear that look so well, but I’m not complaining.

In the trailer directly below, Song Chang-eui examines the suspects brought in for a police lineup, and in under a second, he’s taken note of all their responses and pinpointed the culprit, to the shock of his colleagues Jung Eun-chae and Sung Ji-ru.

In the next video below, the trailer makes a nod to Dr. Frost’s webtoon origins with an animated preview. To be honest, it’s so well-done and slickly produced that I almost want to watch the animated version of the show.

This clip goes into more detail about the theory behind Dr. Frost’s methods (Dr. Frost is a nickname; the hero does have a normal name as well). He explains that in examining the flickers of changes in a person’s facial expressions—which happen in 0.2 seconds—one can read into their true feelings.

To put that theory into practice, he observes a couple at a bar where he serves drinks—oh right, Dr. Frost is also a bartender—and notes the tiny movement of the woman’s mouth when her boyfriend proposes with a big diamond ring. When the girlfriend excuses herself, the guy brags and puffs himself up, feeling pretty good about himself, only to have Dr. Frost offer that the woman will likely reject the proposal. Just as the boyfriend is huffing in offense, he gets a text from his girlfriend rejecting him. Spooked, the guy asks who he is, and the hero slides over his business card: “Me? I’m psychology professor Frost.”

Dr. Frost will be a Sunday-night drama on OCN, to premiere on November 23.

Lee Yoonji is in this?

Why was I not informed? :DDDDDD

Chang-eui looks GREAT as Dr Frost. And the teaser looks good too. And it's OCN, which is my new tvN. (If that makes sense.)

I'm gonna watch out for this show. ^_____^

+1 *Starts praying it will be subbed fast* How come no ones made a deal with OCN yet? They are about to steal the other broadcasters' thunder...hopefully its not dramafever though. For some reason I've had a hard time playing their videos recently. And the subs are meh as it is...

It's up subbed at My Asian TV -- but the last 10 minutes are pretty wonky sub-wise ... but show is awesome.

This is shaping up really nicely. I like well done procedurals & Lie to me, Mentalist kind of shows + OCN camera work is so beautifully stylish. Yes, I'm in.

Some of the manhwa is available in English translation, not all of it, but the first 90 chapters or so. There haven't been any translated updates since the end of last year, though. Anyway, do a search for Dr. Frost manhwa or Dr. Frost manga and you should find it.

Here's the link for Mangafox:

I've read in the forums that new chapters are blocked; only Korean citizens can access them, so it was dropped by the scanlators. There's news of an official English version before, but no updates has been found yet.

And i'm taken a liking to the writer after watching him in Genius 3 XD

Since I saw this on DB a while back, I've been reading the webtoon and now I really want to see this show. The subbing may be tricky because it'll probably have a lot of psych terminology, but I hope someone will be up to the task.

The manga does a pretty good job explaining what everything means, so i'll imagine they will do the same.

I am so happy. I need to find the pal who recc'd Dr. Frost to me several months back and show her these trailers. Then force her into watching the drama with me(she cannot stand live action adaptations)

Ooh, I thought I was the only one who thought so! The trailer with the close ups on the micro expressions makes it seem really similar to Lie to Me.

yes! lie to me is perfect! i love it!

the micro-expressions, psychology, doctor stuff reminded me of the american drama series lie to me. it only has like 3 seasons unfortunately, but i loved it.

i love the "white lie" song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TblCwn-g6lU

I say I'm ten when I'm nine and a half,
My uncle tells a joke and I try to laugh,
In gym I fake a headache when I want to quit,
I say I love the sweater that my grandma knit,
But that's a white lie (white lie),
That's the kind you want to tell,
A white lie (white lie)
So you're mom won't have to yell,
A white lie (white lie)
Everybody does it 'cause it feels all right,
And it's more polite,
But a lie's still a lie, even when it's white.
I pretend I'm asleep when my dad walks in,
I said I ate my chicken but I just ate the skin,
Your face can say you're lying,
When your mouth says you're not,
Your pants are on fire but they're not too hot
When it's a white lie (white lie)
That's the kind you want to tell,
A white lie (white lie)
So you're dad won't have to yell,
A white lie (white lie)
Everybody does it 'cause it feels all right,
And it's more polite,
But a lie's still a lie, even when it's white.
While it might be hard to say what's true,
Would you want a white lie told to you?
But that's a white lie (white lie),
That's the kind you want to tell,
A white lie (white lie)
So you're mom won't have to yell,
A white lie (white lie)
Everybody does it 'cause it feels all right,
And it's more polite,
But a lie's still a lie, even when it's white.

the emotionless part reminds of the japanese drama mr. brain though. also a good watch.
