News bites: April 2, 2022

Lee Min-ho, Gong Hyo-jin, Han Ji-eun

  • A new sci-fi rom-com is on the horizon called Ask the Stars, with Lee Min-ho (Pachinko) and Gong Hyo-jin (When the Camellia Blooms) confirmed in lead roles, and Han Ji-eun (Bad and Crazy) still in talks. Production is in the hands of PD Park Shin-woo (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) and writer Sung Sook-hyang (Greasy Melo), who both worked with Gong previously on Jealousy Incarnate. Filming starts this April and the air date is being planned for 2023. [Newsen (1), (2)]

  • Kim Hyun-joo (Hellbound) and Park Hee-soon (My Name) will soon be returning to our screens in SBS’s new melodrama Trolley. Broadcasting in the latter half of 2022, the story follows the fallout after the secret past of a politician’s wife is exposed. With scripts penned by Ryu Bo-ra (Do You Like Brahms), PD Kim Moon-gyo is attached to direct. [SBS, Sports Chosun]
  • Netflix’s upcoming The Sound of Magic put out a new poster this week, confirming a May 6 release date. In a story about mysterious dreams and magic, the main characters will be played by Ji Chang-wook (Lovestruck in the City), Choi Sung-eun (Beyond Evil), and Hwang In-yub (True Beauty). Working together for a third time now, PD Kim Sung-yoon and writer Kim Min-jung of Moonlight Drawn by Clouds are the talent behind the camera. [KBS]

  • Another drama lined up for Netflix is A Time Called You, a remake of the Taiwanese drama Someday or One Day. The time travel romance stars Ahn Hyo-seop (Business Proposal), Jeon Yeo-bin (Vincenzo), and Kang Hoon (The Red Sleeve Cuff), with PD Kim Jin-won (My Country: The New Age, Just Between Lovers) at the helm and Choi Hyo-bi writing. [JTBC]
  • Nam Yoon-soo (The King’s Affection) has confirmed he will be starring opposite Kim Se-jung (Business Proposal) in SBS’s Today’s Webtoon, which is slotted to air towards the end of the year. In the meantime, Nam is currently busy filming for Kakao TV’s fantasy-mystery Borrowed Body. [SBS]
  • In more casting news, Money Game has added actors Moon Jung-hee (Times), Lee Yeol-eum (Nevertheless), and Lee Joo-young (The School Nurse Files) to its lineup. Adapted from two popular webtoons by Bae Jin-soo (Pie Game and Money Game), the story places a group of people in a dangerous game where everyone needs to survive in order to pass each level. With the main cast now finalized, filming is set to begin in May. [MBC]

  • After filming wrapped last week, we’re finally given a peek at Suzy (Start-Up) in Coupang Play’s upcoming Anna. Releasing this summer, the cast also includes Jung Eun-chae (Pachinko), Kim Joon-han (Hospital Playlist), and Park Ye-young (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), among others. Written and directed by film director Lee Joo-young (A Single Rider), the story is about one woman’s small lie that spirals out of control and leads to a new life. [MBC]
  • Over on tvN, Murderer’s Shopping List came out with another fun teaser this past week. Starring Lee Kwang-soo (Live), Seolhyun (Awaken), and Jin Hee-kyung (Was It Love), the comedy-mystery premieres later this month on April 27. [SBS]
  • MBC’s Showtime Begins! seems to be picking up speed on their promos, and we get a better look at the main cast in the newest poster, including leads Park Hae-jin (Old School Intern), Jin Ki-joo (Oh! Samkwang Villa), and Jung Jun-ho (True Beauty). The fantasy-comedy will premiere on April 23. [Dailian]

A Time Called You

Okay, I'd like to know just WHO watched Ahn Hyoseop's acting and went "Ah yes, we have found the actor who can pull off Li Ziwei and Wang Quansheng!".

Jeon Yeobeen is a very talented actress so I have no idea why she signed up for this remake AND with that cast. I have the same feelings about the SOOD remake that I do about a incoming trainwreck being signaled from a mile away. I really hope I'm wrong.

I'm also not sold on the casting. But we will see. I mean Taiwan selected a new actor for the male lead, and it worked.

It's the writing I'm most concerned with. The original is already complex while being simple. My bet is, the writer will try to one up the original, and offer more twists and turn than needed.

I have some trust/comfort with the PD based on his/her previous works.

I think it's going to come down to the director. I truly believe that much of an actor's success in a given role harks directly back to the director's ability to connect with him/her and bring out their best.

At the same time, I'm viewing this remake as its own original story. I don't expect it to be as dark, slow-moving, and ponderous (and I mean all those adjectives in a positive sense--"Someday or One Day" is excellent, imo) as the source material. I'm betting the Korean version is going to be lighter, more overtly romantic, and with a less ambiguous ending. If that's true, I can see AHS doing fine.

Glad I read this before commenting because this is exactly what I was going to comment 😂

Who on earth decided that Greg Hsu and Ahn Hyo-seop are on the same level?? Greg Hsu gave perhaps the best performance I've EVER seen in this show and that is not an exaggeration. I mean it. Ahn Hyo-seop meanwhile... he's cute?

'Ask the Stars' is about a space gynocologist. Seriously.

"Set in a space station and on Earth, a romance takes place between Korean OB/GYN Gong Ryong (Lee Min-Ho) and Korean-American Astronaut Eve Kim (Kong Hyo-Jin)."

That is the most original SF concept I've seen in a while.

1. I’m gonna be honest, other than Gong Hyo-jin, the people I’m really excited for are the supporting cast of Han Ji-eun and Oh Jung-se. I’ve already mourned elsewhere on this site that I’d rather see a Gong Hyo-jin + Oh Jung-se pairing than the one we’re getting, but oh well. We can’t always have the things we want.

2. Complete opposite feelings on this pairing: I LOVE IT. And it’s by the writer of Do You Like Brahms?, which gave me one of my favourite OTPs in recent years? I’m here for it.

3. I hope this is the great Ji Chang-wook redemption I’ve been waiting years for. If not that, then at least we’ll get a lovely Choi Sung-eun and a Hwang In-yeop who’s not dating his former attorney/professor.

4. Doesn’t matter who they cast. They’re not recapturing the sheer brilliance and magic of the original. End of story.

5. I love both actors, so nothing to complain about.

6. Is it the same Lee Joo-young from Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju and Itaewon Class? Because I don’t remember her being in School Nurse Files.

7. When will Jung Eun-chae get the leading role she deserves?

8/9. The promos look fun!

It's a different Lee Jooyoung! I personally don't recall having seen her in anything besides School Nurse Files, but I'm pretty sure she stars in a few indie films.

Pass on Ask the Stars. The premise is interesting but I don't do LMH and I've only ever been able to finish one GHJ drama.Exicited for showtime, A sound of magic, and A time called you.

I like the 3 actors in The Sound of Magic. I really like how JCW tries to take different roles eveytime.

After passing on MELTY, ROOKIE and LOVESTRUCK I am pleased that THE SOUND OF MAGIC finally has an airing date on Netflix US. I plan to watch and I have my fingers crossed that MAGIC will be a winner for Ji Chang-wook.

However, I am more interested in another upcoming drama for JCW: TELL ME YOUR WISH/IF YOU SAY YOUR WISH. The cast also includes Choi Soo-young (who I enjoyed recently in MOVE TO HEAVEN and RUN ON) and the terrific Sung Dong-il.
JCW with an ensemble cast could be really good. This article is from 6 months ago and describes the drama and characters:
