[Fix That Ending] Making Memories of the Alhambra more memorable

By @mianmianl

One drama whose ending I felt was somehow underutilized yet underrated at the same time was Memories of the Alhambra. The cast seemed so promising. Hyun Bin. Need I say more? And Park Shin-hye was huge at that time. And yet…

I was enraptured with the world from the get go. I’m not a huge sci-fi drama fan, but the concept of having a game world that you could interact with was amazing, and the setting was beautiful as well. I couldn’t care less for the OTP (the actors were great as previously stated, but I always preferred them more as business partners/enemies), and it was perfect for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it supporting start for Lee Jae-wook.

But the ending. The ENDING. I could never get over how a simple, simple fix could do wonders for that drama in my mind.

Even though it was an imperfect drama, I was so upset with how much of a wet blanket Park Shin-hye’s character ended up being. For someone who was supposed to be this strong and resilient character, how could she do, well, absolutely nothing during the time jump at the end of the drama? Hyun Bin has “disappeared” into the game and she just sat around? Of course, in the final moments of the drama there’s a hint that Hyun Bin might be back, but the ending left me with one feeling only: that’s it!?

It fell flat for me, when one simple scene could’ve fixed it for me.

After the time jump, the game finally gets released to the masses and people start playing it.

The game boots up.

There’s a notice that a mysterious high-level player has shown up (Hyun Bin, of course, which we know but no one in the drama knows).

But then you see Park Shin-hye. She’s all dressed in black, with a baseball cap over her [perfectly styled, of course] hair.

She pulls out a gun, which only a high-level player can have. Because, in the years of hiatus before the game had been released, she hasn’t been sitting there doing nothing. She’s been playing the game, leveling up herself.

We see her look through the viewfinder and she sees something that makes her eyes widen in astonishment.

End of scene.

End of show.

But I thought the ending was perfect. It reminds me the ending from one of episodes from The X files which turns the villain into something that continues living without physical body. That one time, made Mulder & Schully, me included, gone mad because they couldn't catch him. But that was time when internet wasn't developed into what it is right now.

If I remembered what happened I wouldn't be able to rewatch shows a hundred times, would I 😂😂
Although to be fair, I haven't rewatched this one yet.

That’s better! Park Shin-hye Literally did nothing except cry prettily and it was tortuous. Why couldn’t she play the game? You’ve landed the perfect tweak.

Yeah, she was sorta just there in the show. Then we see her in Sisyphus where she's quite a bit more pro-active. I do love the concept and themes of Alhambra though. And the song of course is quite haunting.

I really enjoyed Alhambra, but didn't see the need for Park Shin-hye's character. Everything else was pretty epic. In fact, I'd be tempted to watch it again. It reminds me of my holidays... ^^

*Sic in the corner eating her popcorn, trying not to choke thinking about her reaction to MOAs ending and how ... influential this show was for her, and wondering if she can still make a Jeffrey joke in 2022 or if that'll sail over too many heads...*

I was so on board with this show until about the first half episode 13. My favorite part of the show was game ghost Park Hoon creepily showing up to defeat Hyun Bin at every turn with those unblinking eyes and a sword. Things looked like they spun out of the writer's control toward the end because this great story lost its way abruptly. What I really needed was some sort of CGI effect that showed how they got from reality into the game physically (ala Tron). It would've gone a long way to explain some abnormalities in this awesome game. The game becoming somewhat sentient and snatching random players from the real world. Our genius programmer kid was the first to be grabbed and forced to do the will of The Game... who is actually Park Shin-hye. Mwahahaha!

And let's not forget (or please forget) the shoehorned romance. The two of them as friends who survived an ordeal would've been great. (I'm also looking at you, Sisyphus) Another thing... please stop with the crying Park Shin-hye thing. Is it written in her contract?

All in all, MOTA was a fun watch, amazing special effects, and great actors. It could've stopped at 12 episodes, but when people ask me about it, I tell them to stop at episode 14.

Kinda wish more than the ending inself to get two realities shown even midway show as a reveal were we're seeing the inside of the game as the reality and all this people/souls captured starting to live inside it being caught along the outside parallel even expanding to make other people having them for avatars without knowing at start they were real people(but that would become another game i guess)...Also,actually giving PSY charcater something to do...Still remember in my naivete was waiting for that twist on her character than never came...

A Song Jae-jung drama where the female lead has agency and a role in the plot?
I think the universe would break.

I can't remember exactly what happened in the end, I can remember how I felt when watching the end and I was upset and disappointed in what it could have been. I remember also wanting more of PSY's character, and yes her leveling up in the game to save Hyun Bin would have been a great ending!

This is better, except for the eyes widening in astonishment. We've had too much of that already from PSH. There was never any chance HB was going to be able to return from the game without having to go to jail. I loved the concept of a VR game and it's realisation in MOA, especially the atmosphere it created. I stumbled over PSH's lack of anything, and I don't think fixing the ending will really take care of that, but it would have been great if she'd levelled up and gone in, or done something, or anything...

I remember so little of this show, seriously. Was there a church where he dies? I didn’t even remember the fact he was entrapped in the game. Didn’t PSH’s character go about living her own life with his money? I thought she bought the b&b. I don’t really remember what happened to hyun bin other than the fact that I felt that there was some parallel to him dying in the church as the final sacrifice for the game and his flawed humanity. And I just remembered, what happened to the little sister played by Lee Re?

I like this new ending.
Generally, it could be so much better if in the game HB and PS could meet at the end AND we also could see PS's progress in game, maybe searching for some answers too. Generally, Alhambra is a very mixed drama with mixed results, but your fix could make it watchable.
