Actress Lee Ga Ryeong, who has gained popularity for her role in the drama Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce), recently admitted that she lowered her age when she debuted in 2015. She had stated she was born in 1988 but in reality it was 1980. Her debut age was stated as 27 instead of 35. She explained that her ages changed while modeling and she simply never got the chance to correct it.

“I had no chance to correct my age shown on the Internet as I had no agency during my hiatus. I had no chance to verbally correct it through having an interview as I was too busy filming the drama back then. I wasn’t even able to consider having an agency,” she said. She continued, “When I was a fashion model, it was a common thing to adjust our age on the Internet depending on occasions. One day, I found that many fans knew me as 35. I did not mean to cause confusion. I was born in 1980.”

I think the reason for the 8 year difference is clear. Ageism is still a big issue in K-entertainment. Even lead actresses in their late 30s worry about how their careers can have a sudden downturn in their 40s, as producers look to younger actors to play the leads in various genres. Some have a difficult time accepting the demotion from lead credit to supporting cast; from playing the daughter in love in a melo-romance to playing the daughter’s mother. It really should not matter if one has the talent and skill for the role.

Lee Ga-ryeong really nailed her role.
It is pretty easy to dislike her BHR and hard to have compassion for her yet she made sure she evoked that compassion.

Football age is a common trend. Many actresses and male footballers lower their ages for longer active days.

It’s such a weird double standard when there are lots of actresses who convincingly play the high school version of their character when they’re in their 30s, but they turn 40 and are only suitable to be cast as the parents of high schoolers, for some reason 🙄

Hi. Ive been thinking about this for a while. I think it would work great.

Park MinYoung in Shooting Stars, instead of Lee Sung-Kyung (yes, I know she is much older than the ML, but they looked great in WTWIF) and Lee Sung-Kyung instead of Park MinYoung Forecasting Love and Weather.

Just think about it.

Mother (2018) is one of those well made dramas you only watch once because the subject matter is so grim, dark, depressing and sad.

Regardless, It features a career best performance by Lee Bo-young (she should have won the Baeksang that year) and is well worth the watch, the cast is top notch and the writing is solid.

I have posted requests for recommendations here before and watched some good shows thanks to the responses, so I thought I'd try again.
I just watched Something about 1%, the 2016 K-romance and I'm working my way through several Chinese romances. I'm also enjoying Sh**ting Stars and Showtime Begins!
BUT all of these have the arrogant male lead who is often brilliant, talented or rich, but is forced to behave better to win over the woman he loves.

What I am really looking for right now are some Korean, Chinese, or Japanese romances in which the woman is in the traditional male romantic role such as,
1. Powerful woman business executive from a Chaebol family, who orders around but then falls in love with a male office worker
2. A brilliant female scientist who meets a lovable male goofball who is clearly less smart, but very kind.
3. A successful lady lawyer who is very rational and precise, who keeps encountering a sloppy but creative male artist, who inspires her to broaden her horizons.
It doesn't have to be precisely these scenarios, of course, but if there are any recommendations for ANY romances in which the traditional gender expectations are reversed, I would love to hear about them. Thank you!

Scenario n1 reminded me a little of the drama Into The Ring/Memorials. Even though the female lead isn't from a rich family, and doesn't get to order people around as much as she'd want to, the falling in love with the office worker part is there, I'd say! xD

Scenario suggestions aside, it's a really great drama imo, quite different from the usual rom-coms.

(I'm bad at explaining, hope I gave the right idea about how the show is xD)

1. And I think of the second lead couple of Beauty Inside. Please be warned that I found the show very boring though.

2. I don’t think this show has reversed expected gender roles, but I found the ML and FL extremely a sweet couple: My Husband Mr Oh. You might like it.

'Beauty Inside' suffered from having the same name as a much superior film (and before that, American webseries). If they had simply named it something else it would have been considered standard K-drama fare.

That's a good one, the whole point of that drama is the gender role reversals.

Required fields are marked *

What you're looking for is super rare, some names that come to mind are:
1. Shopping King Louie (but Louie was the chaebol who lost his memory so the FL took care of him istead)
2. 100 Days My Prince (similar setup with the same FL)
3. The Lion's secret (the fl is pretty badass but what happens in such case is that the ml is secretly badass lol.)
I didn't complete any of these dramas because of shortcomings other than that of the premise. However, what you are wanting is mostly present in secondary couples. I'm thinking Scarlet in WWW. Though in almost all cases the male lead does once or twice "save the female lead".
Shows with an equal dynamic are also rare to come by let alone those with gender roles reversed. I'm watching cdramas Who rules the world recently. At least there the two leads are equally smart and come to each other's aid still the male lead's story is more layered than the female leads.

Thanks, @wapzy. You recommended the cdrama The Day of Becoming You to me last time I asked this type of question, and I really enjoyed that one, although as is often the case, I didn't like the very ending as well as the rest of the show. I agree with you about Scarlett and second couples. Who rules the world's premise didn't immediately appeal to me, but I might take a look later.

You Are My Glory has a balanced dynamic in my opinion. I'm currently watching A Girl Like You and I feel like the leads are pretty balanced as well. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and balance each other pretty well so far.

There's the J-drama Kimi wa petto. She's not a chaebol but she's a strong, overworked woman who finds a man who reminds her of her childhood pet and moves him in (as all sane, rational people do). I've watched it and all of the adaptations. Each time I find it weird af but sweet?

I have noticed second couples are more likely to have a woman who is the smarter, more assertive partner than do first ones, especially if they are the confident friend advising the more timid female lead. (Meanwhile the male friend is often the nice guy to the arrogant male lead.)
That might not necessarily be true in Run-on, where the female lead was a lot smarter than the dud male lead, whose only virtue was that he was rich. But still its often a reason for me to like second couples better at least at the start, because they often begin on a more equal footing.

@hacja - Have you watched the cdrama starring Sun Li called Nothing Gold Can Stay (no relationship to the Robert Frost poem)? It isn't a true romance drama, but it depicts the life of a poor girl who marries into a wealthy family, and takes over and expands the family business once her husband dies. Superb acting and historical references.

Thanks @hacja I was thinking of this drama but could not remember the name. I stopped watching Chinese dramas after I totally emerged myself in Kdramas but I really liked that one. My other Chinese drama go to is Go ahead where two dads are raising their children. There is a love triangle amongst the children as they grow up as they are all unrelated.

Other dramas where the rich badly behaved guy gets the girl is not a feature but have love stories are the slice of life genre like Hospital Playlist, Reply 1988 and Melo is my nature.

You know, @songxrising, you reminded me of that Frost poem. Because I had to memorize "Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening" as a boy, and had a very painful experience reciting it in front of class, I always have been slightly hostile to Frost.
So while I love the lines "So Eden sank to grief/So dawn goes down to day" (Just so you know I'm not showing off, I remembered them vaguely, but didn't have them memorized, so I looked them up) the fact is, gold is one of the colors that does stay around, especially here in Southern California. Green is what is iffy, except for artificial grass. But I don't know that Frost wrote about that!

The third scenario reminds me of the secondary couple in Run On. The woman was the boss of a sport agency and the man a goofy artist.

Other possible dramas that could fit some of these scenarios:

Search WWW (3 powerful female CEOs- one of the romantic interest was a young (not yet famous at all) makjang drama actor. Female friendships <3

Rookie Historian Goo Hae Ryung
Cute romance between an intelligent and passionate historian-in-training and a goofy young prince (not the crown prince so he didn’t have as much power and influence). A sageuk that feels like a romcom and an office comedy from start to finish <3

Hogu’s Love is a romance between a tsudere athlete and a foolish (Hogu=fool) webtoon artist. I love this drama despite its flaws. Hogu is not your stereotypical male lead at all.

Also, I wasn’t a big fan of this drama but based on your criteria, you might like the Japanese drama Zenkai Girl. It’s about an ambitious career driven corporate lawyer (female lead) and a unambitious male lead who end up taking care of a bunch of kids together (the male lead being the one with the parental instincts).

I've read about Hogu's Love, but have never seen it, so thanks for reminding me of it, and I'll look up Zenkai Girl.

I really enjoyed the last three mentioned but found Run on did nothing for me because I was not interested in the male lead’s character at all.

On a side note I have got fed up with the male politician I will micro manage my family to ensure we present as golden and behind the scenes treat everyone abusively trope. The male CEO/King character who will do anything for power and the female equivalent usually a Chaebol mother in law/King’s mother are just so over the top I find they are too frustrating to watch and it ruins the drama for me. It’s getting to the point where I stop watching a lot of the historical dramas because the political fighting is too dominant in the storyline.

I know this might feel controversial, but I always felt Another Oh Hae Young had its genders reversed. The female lead isn't wealthy or powerful, but is the one loudly and relentlessly following and nagging and taunting him.

that first scenario of yours reminded me of korea drama The Birth of the Rich/Becoming of Billionaire (KBS, 2010), Lee Bo Young as the hotel heiress encounters Ji Hyun Woo the hotel employee, I had fun watching it a decade ago :)

I don't know if you're familiar with wuxia drama, but after reading your post I instantly remember how my first encounter with dramas in my childhood would be with wuxia that has the very smart female lead and less smart but very kind ML. it was my dad's doing haha,,he introduced me to these wuxia:
1. Legend of Condor Heroes (FL: the super smart Huang Rong), the latest remake is from 2017/2018.
2. Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (FL: the powerful and smart Zhao Min). the latest remake is from 2019.

as for Jdrama, i echoed who mentioned Zenkai Girl, it was far from perfect, but I remember I was moved by the message it conveys about the importance of family, and it has that smart woman meets very kind man story.
Hope you and your wife will find another enjoyable drama to watch together!

The reversal of gender roles is indeed rarely seen in dramas, the only ones that I can think of are It's Okay to Not Be Okay and Queen In-hyun's Man, the Legends as well as the aforementioned Romance of Tiger and Rose.

Indeed this is more commonly occurring with second leads. The most obvious one is in Falling into your smile, where the SFL is a chaebol and ends up buying her boyfriend's team. They're a great couple, as apart from the main leads where the ML behaves as a grade schooler.

@midnight Thanks for thinking of me two weeks in, which is longer than I usually remember things--but actually that's not true about me as far as this comment thread goes, because I watched Another Oh Hae Young again this week, partly with what you said above in mind. Also, I was looking at it again because of My Liberation Notes.

Anyway, since you likely will be the only one to read this, I can respond to you directly. I see what you were saying about gender expectations being reversed in terms of the lead Miss Oh, especially in the middle part of the show, throughout I think Do-Kyung is playing a classic male character--someone reluctant to confront his emotions until forced to by fears of his demise, and also, of course by the effervescent Miss OH.

Interestingly, it now appears to me in the later episodes, that Liberation Notes is also exploring opening up, primarily through connection with others--as being necessary to escape self-confinement of various sorts. So even though Liberation Notes is far different in tone, there is a kind of consistency between them.

Thank you so much for your thought--provoking comment and your recommendations. I think I'll probably start the Naked Fireman starting today--need to put in an hour or so on the exercise bike so I don't become a star in a remake, the Naked Fat Guy!

You are very welcome. I hope you enjoy it.

It is very interesting how different people see different shows (or anything, for that matter). Being reluctant to confront their emotions until forced to seems to me such a classic female lead trait. Less in recent years than the more classic ones of cours.

@midnight My wife and I watched all of The Naked Fireman last night. It was really enjoyable! Of course there were a few times when it kind of strained credulity, but it was gripping throughout. The main couple was very attractive, and I could have used a few more episodes to develop their romance, so that the show could have ended with a kiss. But at least there was a brief moment of fiery passion, so to speak. Thanks again for recommending it!

The exercise accompaniment for today is going to be That Fool, another one of your recommendations. I won't bother you with my response, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

As far as gender expectations, we might be talking about slightly different things. I'm thinking of the classic defined-as-male stoic response, where you prevent yourself from feeling too intensely to maintain independence and strength. This was, in U.S. culture at least, always defined as different and better, than the "emotional" woman's response.

Certainly this was the way I was brought up as a boy. In fact, my father was a wonderful man, but the only time he reprimanded me was when I cried, got really angry, or even really exuberant. "Calm down" he would say. Control and detachment were his watchwords. Although of course I've missed him for the last 10 years, I'm glad he isn't around when I watch k-dramas!

Thanks again.

0

I'm glad you liked The Naked Fireman. And I absolutely don't mind reading your response. My taste usually defers so much from many beanies that it is quite rare I chat about my favorite shows.

Hmm... Looks like I misunderstood your point. Maybe because that kind of classic defined-as-male that you mentioned has been getting rare in kdramaland in the past decade. There are still a lot of male stereotypes in kdramaland which seem to be much more difficult to subvert.

Really happy for Alexa winning the American Song Contest. While I'm completely detached to kpop, i like listening to the Dive Studios Podcast. Her and Jae's podcast wasn't my favorite, Get real by BM, Ph 1, Ashley and Peniel is what I look forward to the most. But Alexa really has such a charming and down to earth personality that it's hard to overlook her. She is an example of the oddest situation working in your favor. Her mom, though a Korean, was adopted when she was 5. So she grew up as an American not recalling anything of her heritage. However, kpop made way to Alexa through a Chinese culture project. It must have sounded really ambitious to embark on being a kpop star when you don't even know the culture or the language. But Alexa has done a really good job. Hope this paves way for her success in both US And Korea.

Anybody else noticing a pet food shortage in the U.S.?

I went to the supermarket Monday and they had precisely zero dry cat food of any brand. When the checkout clerk made the mistake of asking if I found everything OK I mentioned that and she said they had been out all day and she thought other stores were too. Went home and googled it -- seems there is a problem, caused partly by supply chain disruptions (Bad!) and partly by more people getting cats since the plague started (Good?).

I still had some food at home but I put my cat on a diet, just in case.

So I went Wed, earlier in the day, and they had just two bags, so I snagged both. Wrong brand and my cat doesn't seem to like it as much as the (cheaper) stuff I usually get, but he's just going to have to deal with it.

It’s not just in the US - I have an exceptionally picky cat so whenever I see the only cat food she will eat I have to buy lots. It’s regularly out of stock for weeks. It used to be processed locally but they shifted production overseas in 2019(?) and yeah, that was very annoying of them because getting stuff shipped here is a lot harder than it used to be! Our shortages don’t seem as pronounced as what some of my friends in the US seem to be seeing but there are definitely gaps in our shelves. (And the cost of everything is $$$$$$)

Yes, there is a cat food shortage for certain brands. My rescue's volunteers mentioned it.

Before my go-to "pop and mom" pet supply store closed last year, I bought more than a year's supply of a brand of dry cat food that is not sold in large chain/big box stores. (The company doesn't want to deal with big boxes so when Petsmart bought Chewy.com, the company pulled its products.) I'm not yet affected in this regard.

I usually buy cat food in bulk and there is a brand of canned food that has been harder to locate. I'll have to go to a specialty premium pet supply store to get it in loose cans instead of in cases.

1

Required fields are marked *

Seeing the same in my southern Alabama town. We have 9 cats (all indoors!) so we go through a LOT of cat food every week. One cat is diabetic so no dry food is allowed in the house. Plus he can only eat certain flavors of a certain brand because of carb counts. There have been several times over the past couple of years when my local wally world was completely out of stock of his food. I've learned to keep at least a month's worth of food stockpiled so that I can roll with the shortages without worrying too much.

I have watched a few K dramas now where Audi seems to be the featured car manufacturer yet the 4 rings are not visible but the mounting for them is still there. Does anyone know why this is? I have heard they do this when the car manufacturer is not the one they are promoting which makes sense if it just happens to be in the background of a key scene. However, this does not seem to be the case with Audi where the car is clearly a product placement item acting as a status symbol associated with the wealth of the character.

Korea TV regulations limits the amount of air time products can have in an episode. It is called excessive product placement. Therefore car badges or product labels are removed, blurred or not directly filmed.

It's Eurovision week! A week of spectacles! My favorites from the semi-finals are Norway, Estonia and Czechoslovakia. Finland's the Rasmus are guaranteed a spot on the local radio for years to come but I think they'll end up somewhere in the middle in terms of votes. Ukraine is probably going to win. I enjoyed their song even though I think the refrain is the weakest part of the song. It's not about music this year. Eurovision is always said to not be political but who are we kidding?

Hi All,
This is a request for the regulars on here for tech support because I can’t work out how to add things to the fan wall and shows sections. Please can someone help me out as I am not really competent in using social media so don’t know these things from other platforms. Thanks.

I just wanted to add I am loving the Dramabeans community ☺️

By adding things to the fan wall, do you mean writing posts or inserting videos and photos?

Ok so when you login, on the top right corner, you'll see the search icon, the bell icon and your profile picture. It would be the same as it appears right now, for instance, in my case it's a teal circle. Click your profile picture and right below your name you'll see the option of view my profile. Once you'll go there you may land on the fan wall or comments section. You can also go directly by clicking on fan wall, under your profile picture. This is the place where you can post what ever you want to as long as it's not spam lol. Since you have seen others fan walls you are quite aware that there's abeanie section. This is the place where others can see what you post on your fan wall. The comments section is for the comments you have made on threads such as this one. So basically that is a collection of your comments. When it comes to my shows, I actually haven't done that since a very long timw because it didn't serve any purpose. But there used to be. Abutton besides the shows' name that allowed you to add it to "my shows".

Thank you as soon as I followed the instructions I saw the options for uploading pictures etc and suddenly I had flashbacks to all the tech support calls at work where it is always a really straight forward solution once I am on the call with witnesses. Thanks so much for helping out a member of the tech challenged crew ☺️.

@db-staff

I don't know if I'm the only one but since 3 days, I have issue with dramabeans, the pages don't load or are taking their time to load. It's taking time to navigate on dramabeans.
